Very expensive for not so great sushi. First time there. Won't be back. Husband was attracted by the *specials* board on entry. He ordered the O toro sashimi which we do at many places, it is one of our regular dishes. There were four pieces. Presentation was nice. I had one piece. Was tough and fishy tasting. I didn't like it which I normally do, opted out of eating my second piece. Being celiac I was restricted to only a few rolls, normally I can find many options that can be made GF, choices slim but I made some work with only minus the sauce. We ordered three rolls, they were slightly on the smaller side. Nothing fancy. One scallop hand roll that was fantastic. Garlic edamame. A house wine and Sapporo. The bill was $156. We eat out a lot. Went twice, once for my graduation dinner and came back this year for my friend's. Usually, sushi is out of my budget but I had to make an exception and save up to go here- and the prices are incredibly fair for the quality they're serving. What separates Umami from many of the other sushi restaurants that charge the same is the fish. There are incredible imports and some of the fish almost "melts" in your mouth. Additionally, a lot of their rolls are quite creative. Previously I enjoyed their omakase which used to be $50, I hope they bring that back sometime, we did not get a menu offering it when we went this year (this is the only minus I can say). Additionally, the servers are attentive, respectful, and let you enjoy your meal. I had the OMG roll. It came in a casserole. So that was weird. There were rice cakes (?) All around it on the edges of the dish. I was not a fan of these.. too chewy. The actual roll was pretty good. I am gluten free (sensitivity). And one of the people that work there (not our waiter) came up to us and yelled about how "kani is gluten." I was bewildered. First if all, the first ingredient is something like white fish, second of all, it's just a sensitivity, third of all, she ruined the vibes with her know it all (but obvioualy doesn't) attitude. read more

The outside feel can be deceiving. The inside is welcoming, elegant but not intimidating. Everyone greeted every customer I. Japanese when they entered. Very friendly and attentive service. I had the Madai carpaccio, and it was really flavorful, although just a TOUCH too sweet for me. Then the Angry Dragon which was really good. I agree with other reviewers that this wasn't as spicy as I was expecting. And lastly, the OMG. Get spot if you don't like driving into town to kata robata or uchi. The fish is very fresh and my kids love it here. Granted. Feeding four people is way more expensive than feeding two. Prices are higher than the other suburban sushi houses but your paying for quality. We go here a ton. They have cuts of fish that you typically only see at the higher end places. This place is NOT some of the other places that serve tempura shrimp rolls 5 different ways or use a ton of imitation crab. I would say the roll size is between uchi and Japaneros. Uchi rolls are great but the small sized rolls sometimes get ridiculous with the prices they charge. Japaneros on the other hand have extremely large sizes which is great if your hungry but I'll admit with all the toppings they can be a two biter. Theirs on the other hand I would say medium sized. Perfect for the kids I would definitely give this place a try. The owner and staff are great people who understand service. Give it a try the woman who owns it is extremely nice. read more

The second best sushi buffet I've never had in my life, for a beautiful price of $30pp. The menu is two pages only, but the quality is to die for. I would say it's comparable to the sashimi I've had in Japan. The yellow tail sashimis, and the white tuna sashimi, so fresh and melts in your mouth. Very pretty presentation, and sweet and happy waiters to top the cake. Spicy edamame hits the spot so good. House salad with very generous dressing. Seaweed salad the crunchiest of the crunchy. Calamari my sis said was the bomb. Very clean and neo-Tokyo aesthetic. I have passed by this place a few times and it was definitely a bookmarked place for the books! What sped up the process was because of someone's positive review on asian eats lol. It's a cute little sushi spot, very casual, not much of an intimate place. Looking over the menu so many rolls sounded sooo good! --Baked Mussels (5/5) - Very delish! Whole piece of mussels topped with Mayo and their sauces. Loved how charred the sauce was and not over powered like other places. --Salmon Sashimi (thinly slices) (5/5) - Great, the fish was nice and refreshing. --Spicy Chopped Scallop (5/5) - Refreshing piece of sushi! The scallop was a tad slimy but the spicy Mayo helped tone it down. I loved that it was super cold. The only complaint was that it wasn't too spicy. --Wagyu (5/5) - Thinly sliced beef that was seared you yuzu kosho. Very soft and tender, dropped half of my rice though! --Botan Ebi (2/5) - It was very slimy and fishy. Usually they taste a little sweet and crunchy, but definitely was not fresh. The fried head though was good though. I usually order this for the fried heads. Kinmadai (5/5) - Goldeneye snapper, a white fish with a firm texture. Fresh and topping complimented the fish. --Unami Roll (5/5) Cooked roll with shrimp tempura with spicy crab and cooked shrimp and avocado on top. It was a big roll but it was so good. The shrimp was sweet, the roll had a nice crunch to it. Love a mixture cooked roll, gives a less tiring taste after eating a good amount of raw fish. --Pink Lady Roll (5/5) - A spicy raw roll with yellowtail and tuna. I enjoyed this roll. Has a good kick and fish was great! The service was pretty good. She didn't check on us too often so we had to ask the other waitress that were picking up plates to help us. I can't believe I haven't left a review yet! It's my third time visiting this place and every time I've been so pleased My favorite dish to order is by far the pink lady. The combination of spicy tuna and yellowtail with the delightful citrusy yuzu ponzu sauce was amazing. The fried rolls are super tasty too. There was a roll I was recommended and can't remember the name but it was not good to me but maybe it's just my taste buds I'm sure the quality was good for what it was but it's a one-off. The service was great and you can tell that the staff really are passionate about the quality and taste of the fish. I got great recommendations for sake as well which I enjoyed! I didn't know sake could be fruity and sweet! All in all definitely recommend this place. It's great for a nice dinner and the location is great for people living in the sugar land and riverstone area. You guys are lucky to have such a gem! read more

I really want to give this place more stars, but here is the rating breakdown from my experience: I've been here a total of three times before I wrote this review. The first time was an anniversary dinner, and the other times was during their special discount. If you like high quality fish, this place has that. All of the nigiri we've eaten really satisfied our buds in both flavor and quality of fish. They know how to serve their fish at the right temperature with the perfect rice to fish ratio and I love that they dress their nigiri. I would say eating the fish alone would have me rate them 4-5 stars. Salmon, hamachi, Spanish bluefin tuna, Saba mackerel were all delicious and fresh. This is where the 3 stars average out...their service. For the price bracket of the menu you pay for, they really don't have quality service that justifies it. During my anniversary dinner, the waiter didn't really acknowledge our anniversary even though we put in a rsvp for it. We told him it was our first time, but the experience with him was very awkward as it seemed though he didn't really know what to do to make it special for us. I had to ask or mention to him that the lady on the phone (assuming it's the manager) that made our rsvp told us she'd make sure it was special. His response to most things were "oh, ok"..then he brought out free dessert at the end. Overall, it was our first time and the fish quality was pleasantly really good, probably the best in the area, but then we could pay the same prices/quality at Uchi and get quality service there. Our latest experience is when things took a turn for the worst. I ordered a salmon lemon roll, and shockingly one of my pieces still had plastic wrap on it. I'm unsure how only one piece had it, but when I told the servers, they once again were unsure how to rectify the situation. The server (same guy from previous) comes out after talking to the sushi chefs about it and says in a very hesitant and unsure tone..."I am sorry...do you..want me to take this away for you?" That's it? They were very hesitant to even do anything to right the wrong they did. I had to respond in a rather irked way and said "so you're just going to take away one of my pieces and not do anything about it?" The response I received was "Did you want us to do something about it?" So I became upset and said "Well yes, because we are short of our food because of this mistake, or did you want me to take the plastic off myself in order to eat this?" Only after that, they ended up remaking us another roll. The rest of the experience was ruined after that because I was upset and they were awkward. I just don't how a place that charges high prices can have service like that. I literally could have consumed that plastic unknowingly if I didn't give my food a second look. The clean aesthetic and very attentive staff also provided for a good experience. I got the coconut lover, wagyu steak sashimi, and scallop sashimi. Coconut lover and scallop were spot on delicious. The flavors were bold, neat, and were a medley of savory, sweet, with a touch of heat. I added spicy Mayo to my coconut lover and the spicy creaminess of the mayo and the coconut shrimp had me and my friends in love. My friend who normally doesn't like sushi was even raving about it! The wagyu steak sashimi was good but I was wanting more taste. If it got my friend who normally doesn't like sushi to like it, that's a good thing!! I enjoyed the customer service here too. So happy to have a great new sushi spot in Riverstone. The quality of the fish, the service and the ambience are on point. For apps, I highly recommend the crispy rice. The spicy garlic edamame was great as well. For rolls, we had the salmon lemon, angry dragon and nemo and each one was perfect. The salmon carpaccio is fresh and beautifully presented and o'toro was like butter. They don't have their liquor license yet (they said they are working on it!) but they let us run to Kroger across the parking lot and bring in a bottle of wine - yay! The service was friendly and attentive - our waters stayed full and they quickly cleared empty plates. I think this place will be a top contender for best sushi in the area. The sushi here is great! Fish taste incredibly fresh and the presentation makes me feel like I'm not at a local neighborhood restaurant (the Hirami is a must!) The staff was very helpful and friendly. My only gripe, hence 4 starts, is the restaurant is a bit out of the price point for a neighborhood restaurant and for the avg price conscious Sugar Lander. Just me, my wife, and our 2 small kids (they ate half of a shaggy dog roll) our bill came out to be 160ish which includes taxes. All in all, I WILL be returning to Umami but probably not as frequent as I would like due to price point. read more

This place used to be under different ownership but recently changed ownership and the menu. Since this is right in our neighborhood, we decided to give it a try. So glad that we did! The restaurant is beautifully done. The staff is extremely friendly. They have great Covid protocols in place as they check your temperature at arrival. One of my kids was a bit warm from sitting in the sun and they patiently waited till her temp went down. Regarding the food, this is my new favorite sushi restaurant in Sugar Land. We drove about 30 mins because we were so excited about good sushi in the "burbs" and after reading the reviews and boy it met all our expectations. From the service to the quality of food. The prices are a bit more than your typical burbia sushi but it was worth every penny! It's only $2-5 more, but you're paying for the quality. The freshness of the sushi was melt in your mouth goodness. Even my 4 year old son has already requested to come back and eat more Hokkaido uni! It's comparable to Kata and MF sushi. Heard about this place and made the drive to check this place out. I didn't realize this spot was deep in Missouri city but it is. The service and food did not disappoint. If I lived nearby I would frequent here. They serve sake and wine but no cocktails. We started off with spicy garlic edamame, brussel sprouts, crispy rice with salmon, and baked mussels. For our main dishes we got the pink lady roll, kanapachi carpaccio, salmon carpaccio, and spicy chopped scallops. Baked mussels are whole mussels topped with the dynamite sauce. I typically always eat it where it's diced up but this had the whole mussel intact. Kanapachi were also really good and the pear gave it nice sweet crunch. Newly opened and 50% off! My friend and I came here on a Thursday night and it was pretty packed. We waited about 25 minutes to get a table. The restaurant was pretty busy the whole night, but the service was good and the servers were well staffed. We ordered the beef short rib, which was my personal favorite! It was SO tender and just melted in your mouth. You could see the marbling through the short rib, and the fattiness just added to the flavor. I thought the short rib didn't need the sauce, as it was flavorful enough by itself. We also ordered the over the rainbow roll, which was very filling and big! The California roll's imitation crab had some sort of mayonnaise with it, possibly kewpie? Regardless, it was still delicious. The fish was fresh and tasty! Finally, the Pink lady, which has a kick to it! The cilantro flavor in the roll is delightful, not too overpowering. My husband and I went to eat on their second night of soft opening. The waitresses and waiters were so friendly and definitely short staffed. It was a good problem because they didn't expect to be so busy in their second night of soft opening. Their sushi and food in general was delicious with lots of flavor. It's not often you find good fresh Otoro and Hokkaido Uni in sugar land. My main issue with this place is the sushi rice. It is clearly an afterthought - it was cold and DRY. Any good sushi lover knows the most important part of nigiri is the rice! I suggest that they work on this, should be a relatively easy fix if they put a little work into it. Should be body temp, and just DRY enough to hold together yet not too moist to fall apart. Because of this I'd give them a 3.5 but they do have the potential to be better. read more
