The salmon sashimi was fresh, thick & delicious. The Mango Salmon roll had crab & cucumber inside & salmon & puréed mango sauce on top which was mild and tasty. The Ghost Roll had tempura shrimp & spicy tuna inside with salmon & spicy mayo on top. It was unusual that the tempura shrimp was not crisp because it had been refrigerated before adding it to the roll, but overall still tasted good. They had creative serving dishes with floral garnishes which seemed elegant. The server was very polite. The water carafe for the table and lychee candy that came with the check were nice touches. Suki sushi is a hidden gem in Sugar Land. It's tucked away in a small corner next to TJ Max/Pho ben plaza. I honestly would not have known about it without yelp scrolling, but am happy that I found it. I first came with my dad and we ordered the suki chef's choice assorted sashimi. It came with a grid of 9 different types of selected sashimi with at least 2 pieces each which made for a perfect 2 person sampler course. My favorites were the chutoro and the sweet shrimp which were both so fresh and vibrant. I will say Suki is better known for their huge rolls. They have a 3 roll lunch combo with a list you can choose from. We ordered the crunch roll, spicy scallop roll, and the salmon maki. The salmon maki really stood out to me because it had an insane amount of fish to the point where I was tasting more fish than rice. I have also tried a few specialty rolls. One that stood out to me was the Hwy 6 roll which was a soft shell crab roll with unaqi on top. It came with a flammable paper that they lit up which left a nice smokey taste and gained some presentation points. Overall, yummy lowkey sushi spot that I am excited to come back to try. Suki Sushi is a bit hidden away in a shopping center, but, in my opinion, they offer some real quality and value. Suki is a small restaurant inside, but they were not busy when we visited for lunch on a Saturday. We were promptly seated and had our order taken and then we were treated to some tasty sushi after a very brief wait. One item that I implore everyone to order is the chef's choice assorted sashimi. You get 9 different seafood that is the best that they have on hand that day. On our particular visit, we got lucky with a good assortment of shellfish including a large and plump sweet shrimp and two very tender whole abalone. We also really enjoyed their rolls, namely the simple salmon roll. We ordered the 3 roll lunch combo and a special roll a la carte just to have a good variety to try. The 3 roll lunch combo definitely caught us a bit off guard because of how large the rolls were. We got the crunch roll (we will skip this next time in favor of a raw roll), spicy scallop roll, and previously mentioned salmon roll. The salmon portion inside was honestly really big and we felt quite full at this point. The spicy scallop was tasty as well, but we felt that there was a bit too much sauce on top. The special roll we tried was the Hwy 6 roll, which has unagi on top and soft shell crab inside. The Hwy 6 was tasty as well, but definitely not my favorite item of the day--the presentation was very neat though! Summary: Per the employee, this place has changed ownership, though I'm not sure if it just happened or if it had already transitioned from being another restaurant or another owner. Over the years, this location has housed many different restaurants, and I've lost track of all the names. I decided to give it a try after seeing all the 5-star reviews, even though I was skeptical. Unfortunately, I'm not sure how it's getting such high ratings. Problem 1: When I picked up my food, there was only 1 table occupied on a Sunday night--that's usually not a good sign. The ambiance hasn't changed much from the previous restaurants; it feels like they just switched cuisines. I ordered a bento box online, thinking it would give me a chance to try a variety of items. I can choose up to 3 options for each box and I got 2 boxes, which ended up with sashimi, nigiri, rolls, and beef teriyaki. However, I wasn't given an option to select the desired doneness of the beef, which I found odd. For $18 a bento box, I expected much better quality--this is not cheap. Problem 2: Everything was tightly wrapped in plastic, which felt strange for Japanese cuisine. It made me wonder if this was done for safety reasons, but it ruined the experience of eating freshly prepared food. Unwrapping everything was tedious, especially since we were hungry and ready to eat right away. It gave the impression that the food had been sitting around and wasn't freshly prepared. Food: - Beef teriyaki: Overcooked to the point of being rock hard. Steak should never be this overdone. - Sashimi: This was a chef's choice selection, I was expecting salmon or tuna, but they gave us yellowtail and it was extremely fishy; my wife couldn't even eat it. - Nigiri: This was also a chef's choice selection, but it gave us 6 different fish instead of 3 of the same kind, which I find it odd, and it included squid and mackerel--2 types of fish we don't like and that aren't commonly served. Typically, chefs go with more popular options that appeal to most people, like salmon or tuna. None of the nigiri tasted good or fresh. - Salmon Roll: They looked like they were made by a beginner or a child, with deformed shapes and a homemade appearance. TLDR: To say I was disappointed is an understatement. We ate the food immediately after picking it up, as soon as it was ready, but it still wasn't fresh. The steak was tough, the sushi rolls were poorly made, and everything being wrapped in plastic stripped away any sense of quality. Some of the worst sushi and service I've had in a long time. I was really excited to try this place because of all the great reviews but I really would've rather just had McDonald's. The "sweet tea" we ordered was obviously Brisk lol. We were one of two tables in the whole place on a Friday night and the appetizer took forever to come out. But the taste of the appetizer (the heart attack) was the only reason I gave this place two stars. I wanted to give it one... The escolar I ordered had zero flavor and then they gave me the wrong roll for my entire. Took them about 15 minutes to remake it (remember we were one of two tables in the place.) And the roll I ordered was all raw, nothing needed to be fried or baked to assemble it. When the remake finally came out, not only was it wrong again but I decided to just try and it eat because I was tired of waiting and it was so dry I could hardly chew it. I barely got three pieces down and decided to just give up. Our drinks were never refilled, no one ever asked how we were or how anything tasted. I barely touched my roll and she did not care at all. Plus this is the first sushi place we were not given ginger or wasabi, very strange to not even offer it, we asked for some and the wasabi had the same consistency as play doh. Though the restaurant is small, it has plenty of seats for a party of four, and maybe bigger group. I ordered the assorted sashimi, and the flaming dragon roll. I would give A+ for presentation on both dishes. The sculptured ice carp on the sashimi plate was beautiful. The sashimi slices were thick and fresh. Here's a coincidence: my uncle and aunt who live nearby had a dog named Suki, who passed away this year. It was quiet on a Sunday night, with a few patrons around, but I'd take that as an invitation to slow down and enjoy your company, food, and drinks. Who would have thought that some of the best sushi in the greater Houston area would be found right here in my back yard in Sugar Land??? When I initially saw this place open up, I was worried because right across the street you could get Sushi Masa or Keepers - both established entities for locals in the area, and I didn't know how this place would distinguish itself. Here's the thing - if you're looking for typical, run-of-the-mill, Americanized sushi and you're just trying to fill your belly, those places are fine. This place, however, is where you go if you want a high quality meal - in the same tier as Sushi Miyagi on Bellaire or Uchi on Westheimer. From the outside, the restaurant looks bland and unassuming (thanks, Sugar Land business ordinances) but don't let appearances fool you. Upon stepping inside, you have a beautifully decorated establishment perfect for a date night. Once seated, the tableware blew me away. From the wood-engraved chopsticks, to the tea kettle of soy sauce, you can tell these people really poured their heart and souls into making even the smallest details of their restaurant presentable and delightful. And of course the crowning jewel - the food. Wherever the owner sources their fish from is on a different level. The quality of the salmon and tuna sashimi especially stand out, and rival some of the ridiculously expensive omakase places I've had in New York City. The tuna was so meaty and the salmon was so fatty I want to go back right now and just order a platter of both. The takoyaki had an extra crispy exterior while maintaining a smooth, creamy interior. The tempura batter was light and had a slighty sweet, aromatic flavor (compared to the typically heavy, oily tempura most restaurants serve), and the spicy tuna hand roll was so good we had to order extra. This place is a gem. I am glad my friend convinced me to go eat here or else I would've missed out on a great place. My friend and I ordered the Simba roll, the Flaming Dragon roll, and the 1/2 Pacific roll. All the rolls were really yummy! The Simba roll was melted and put on a boat when served to us. The flaming dragon roll had a show that came with it. The Pacific Rim was really fresh. If I had to rank, I would put first with the Flaming Dragon Roll, then the Simba Roll, and then the Pacific Rim. I hope to try the other rolls but then it would be so difficult to not reorder these again. I went back with my mom a second time and enjoyed it all again! To top off the food experience I found a thank you card in the takeout bag and GET THIS! IT WAS HAND WRITTEN! This may not mean anything to most but a hand written card goes a long way in terms of customer service! Highly recommend this place. My coworker raved about Suki Sushi last month after trying it for the first time. When she told me that she'd be going there regularly since she lived in the area, I knew I would have to try it. At this point, I've gone to Suki Sushi three times already -- once to dine-in, and twice for takeout. I was never disappointed, and I would still visit if I'm ever in the area again! ** Food: 8/10 ** On my first visit, I tried a bento box (with teriyaki beef, California roll, and tempura), red snapper nigiri, and a spicy scallop hand roll. My favorite thing about the bento is that I can customize what 3 entrees I want in it, so I don't have to worry about ending up with something I don't want. * Teriyaki beef (10/10): This was amazing! I could taste that there was a slight char to the beef for an extra kick of flavor, which most other Japanese restaurants do not do with their teriyaki. I could eat this everyday, honestly. * California roll (??/10): I personally don't like this kind of roll, so I didn't eat any of it. My boyfriend ate all if of though, and he didn't have any criticisms. * Tempura (9/10): I love that the batter used for tempura here is not as heavy. It tastes lighter and a more airy, so to speak. I don't feel as bad after eating several pieces. * Red snapper nigiri (5/10): The fish was a bit bland for some reason. There was neither freshness nor brinyness to it, and I have no idea how this could be. * Spicy scallop hand roll (10/10): If you like spicy, this is definitely something to try! The hand roll is a good size, and there's plenty of scallop so that you don't feel skimped out on the price. For my second visit, I ordered a bento box as takeout. I was neither impressed nor disappointed. * Chicken katsu (9/10): The chicken cutlet was huge! The texture was near perfection -- crispy and not dry inside. My only issue with the katsu was that too much sauce was drizzled on top of it. I would have preferred the sauce to be packaged separately for takeout, both to maintain the crispiness better and to also allow me some control on how much sauce I want on the cutlet. For my third visit, I didn't try any new items and just created another bento box with a mix of previous items that I liked~ ** Service: 10/10 ** The owner is very nice, efficient with sushi rolls, and full of smiles and warmth. I can tell he cares a lot about his business and whether or not his customers are having a good time eating the food there. The other worker I saw was a lady who waited and handled takeout orders. Although the service was efficient and friendly and the rolls were good there were some things I did not care for. The house salad comes only w lettuce and faux crab (which I don't like) and the dressing taste similar to thousand island, so it was a disappointment for me. The spider roll was 5 very large pieces and that faux crab salad type filler that comes in many rolls. It didn't taste bad, but I was expecting a normal spider roll in which the entire roll is fried crab and avocado. This one had a majority of filling w faux crab salad. I will post photo. My favorite of the 3 rolls was the standard Philadelphia roll. The third roll was called the King roll and very tasty. Presentation for sake, even water and the rolls were spectacular! What really bothered me was the extremely overgrown w algae fish tank to the right of the entrance. They did not have a fish in the tank that keeps that stuff at bay, but looked as if someone just wiped all the algae off the front of the tank w their hand. The 2 fish in the tank searched the entire time I was seated searching for food. It bothered me watching this and I did not find it pleasant whatsoever. I saw a small container of goldfish food on the top of the tank but these 2 fish weren't goldfish. Also, the woman's toilet was filthy.
