This is my favorite hibachi spot in the Triangle area. I love that they give you fried rice and lo mein with your meal. The food and service is great every time I have eaten here before the pandemic. I've ordered take out this year and the food was still great! I typically order the hibachi filet and shrimp so that's what I would recommend. read more

I can't believe how many times I drove by this place without taking notice. They have both a bar and teppanyaki seating areas, but the teppanyaki is the way to go. We were seated quickly and checked in on Facebook to receive a free appetizer. The pork dumplings were delicious and a pretty good sized app. There are clear shower curtains and plastic glass separators to separate diners from different parties, definitely dampened some of the fancy feel, but happy to know they are taking covid seriously. Shrimp flambe comes as an appetizer with the hibachi entree. They will not make a substitution. Have they not heard of shellfish allergies? Came here tonight with my 5 year old. The restaurant itself is surely attempting to practice social distancing, which I appreciate, with plastic dividers hanging from the ceiling (looks like they're shower curtains). On top of that, they created a divider per party within each table with plexiglass. Our server, Longzhao was super nice, however we could tell he was very new and not very experienced. He forgot to bring out our drinks; actually didn't come until after my sashimi came and specifically reminding him. He forgot to give us plates and silverware until I asked for it when our chef came. He also forgot to give me soy sauce with my sashimi. The chef also wasn't that great. I used to work at a popular hibachi restaurant in the area, so feel I could comment on taste of food. I actually saw some of the chefs unused to work with work here. Anyway, our hibachi was pretty salty. Chef was nice, but again not as experienced than the other chefs there. The sashimi I ordered tasted fresh. Not sure I'll come back for hibachi. Maybe just sushi/sashimi next time. read more

Unbelievably poor customer service. Called 2 hours to make reservations for dinner. We were told no reservation was necessary for two people. Arrived and was told it would be 30 min, 30 min later and was told it would be another 30 min. Explained that we called to make reservations as was told we didn't need one. Response"oh well we don't do reservations under 5 people." Then why wouldn't you tell us that when we called or at a minimum when we walked in. We were celebrating a birthday in the family and went to one of our favorite restaurants - Fujisan - only to find out that it has been permanently closed and replaced by Umami. We wanted to have Japanese food and since Umami was in the same place as Fujisan and shared the same cook in front of you theme, we decided to try it out. Right at the outset, we found that Hibachi menu wasn't as comprehensive as other Hibachi restaurants and was missing a lot of combos like Scallop, shrimp, with chicken etc. We went with a filet minion for me and chicken for my wife. We did a shared plate for my kid which includes a soup, rice, veggies and noodles for $5. Protein is shared from the parents entree. Fujisan had the same option but also included salad with the kids shared plate - not a big deal. The soup was good, nice and hot with good flavor. Our salad with the ginger dressing was just ok. The ginger dressing was very sweet with no ginger flavor whatsoever. I'd rather have bottled ranch! My fillet minion was pretty good and cooked medium just like I asked for. However, my wife's chicken was overcooked to the extent that she could not eat the chicken at all. The restaurants offered nothing more than a sorry. My wife didn't push it any further as she wasn't too hungry and was quite full with the rice, veggies, soup and salad served earlier. Also, the veggies were slightly over charred as the griddle was a bit too hot, but weren't too bad. Overall, it was no where close to the experience we had at Fujisan. Now, for those who had been to Fujisan before, it was just about an average Hibachi restaurant. Umami is considerably worse than it's predecessor - that should give you a fair idea of how good or bad umami is! read more

If I could give no stars, I would. It doesn't matter if I wait three weeks a few months, a few days, this place always messes up my experience, food, pricing! My most recent experience was that I made an online order, however, the order never made it to the back of the house. The manager was fully aware of this issue, yet was not proactive to ensure that all online orders were going to the back of the house. I was offered a free appetizer to wait an additional 20-30 mins. I don't want free stuff, I want you to do what you're supposed to do. In addition, the young cashier basically lied to my face and said it's not ready but knew it wasn't even placed in the back of the house. If I had not asked for him to figure how much longer it would take, I would've have waited for who knows how long for nothing. This place is literally the worst. read more

We were told that it would be an hour wait, but it turned out to be only 20 minutes, even though there were other parties (both larger and smaller) ahead of us. When we got to the table, we were told that they didn't have any more COVID plexiglass dividers, so we had to sit next to another party without knowing their vaccination status. The hibachi chef was nice enough, but he tossed the shrimp tails into our drinking glasses, and the food had very little flavor. We ordered a large platter of sushi to share (9 rolls), and it was dropped off well after our hibachi was done, and the server did not explain which roll was which before disappearing again. When she finally reappeared, I asked for some chopsticks and gluten-free soy sauce. Ten minutes later, she brought the utensils and low-sodium soy sauce, and disappeared again. When she came near our table again, I asked for gluten-free soy sauce, and she yelled that they didn't have any, while she was on her way to another part of the restaurant. I get that they were busy. I understood that when we went on a Friday night. But, we never felt like we were welcome or appreciated for spending money in this establishment. We did not order a second round of drinks. On our way out, the hosts didn't even acknowledge us as we walked through a mostly empty foyer. The food was meh. The hibachi show was disgusting. The service was bad. We won't be back. read more

I was visiting from out of town and needed to find a good restaurant to throw my mom a leap year birthday bash. The staff was easy to work with and quite accommodating. The food was delicious and plentiful. Everyone had a great time. To my surprise, no one from the area had ever heard of this restaurant. The ambiance is very elegant and cozy, the staff is super friendly, and best of all the food is incredible! We ordered the bang bang shrimp, seared tuna, and rainbow roll. I Was very excited to have a last minute Christmas dinner here and was sadly disappointed. The chef seemed to focus on one family of the table ONLY. My partner and I ordered a dinner for two. All of the meats/vegetables we received were the portion of one person split in half. The rest of table was continuously loaded with food and even give extra! He tried to make it better by loading us with rice but that does not suffice. I do not recommend this for a date night unless you can command most of the table or the chef does better with evenly portioning. My family and I were walking around brier creek and we saw a grand opening sign for Umami. We decided to give it a try and it looked like it was busy because the servers were trying to sit people. I realized that they wanted the right amount of people before they sit anyone at the grill because there will be one person cooking for you. This is similar to kanki, but for a cheaper price. The cooker was extremely nice and he made sure everyone is ok and even refill our sauces as we are eating while he cooked. However, I am not a fan of their servers. The lady who had served us was rarely at our table to refill the drinks, or anything that we needed. The table across from us had the same amount of people, and they had sat down after us. They had received their drinks and salad/soup before our waitress brought our drinks. Also while we were ordering our food, I had some questions about the menu, and she snapped or gave attitude towards me about the menu. My family, wife, and I had a fantastic meal during the noon hour. There was four of us. The sushi was fresh, flavorful, and plentiful. Also, the fried shrimp and fish was exquisite in flavor and presentation. We left feeling very, very satisfied. The service was fantastic. We live in Southern Pines, so it is about an hour away, but well worth the trip. This the best sushi we have had since leaving Japan. I lived in Japan for 9 years and my wife for 3 years and this was fantastic. We will definitely make the trip to Umami in Raleigh again and again. This restaurant use to be Fujisan. I hadn't been in awhile and didn't realize the name had changed. I use to pick up take out all the time and loved it. Tonight I was so disappointed in the food. I ordered hibachi shrimp. The quality was not as good, the shrimp was over cooked, the vegetables were floppy and over cooked, over salted. They've gone cheap with the take out box so the rice was mushy soaking up all the juice from the hibachi. It was not worth the money. It was the same as fast food hibachi. read more
