The price is high and the quality isn't that great. The employees are friendly and they had my order ready quickly. I'd probably not come back just for sushi, but their specialty is hibachi and they do pretty good with that. read more

Umami - Volcano and jalapeño popper sushi - Japanese Near Me - Raleigh, North Carolina

Shrink-flation is real! Been here a few times and noticed portion sizes going down little by little. Hardly any zucchini in the vegetables and a toddler size portion of noodles. I'm usually taking a haul home with me which makes the price worth it but not anymore, so just FYI. Very pricy but great service from our chef!!! read more

I decided to try this place because I heard great reviews. I will not be coming here again, had a horrible experience. The hostess had no idea what they were doing and had bad communication skills. The waiter was over whelmed with the amount of tables and didn't place half of our orders. Was a waste of time and money. read more

Ordered the imperial for 2 filet migon. Rare and medium rare. We got well done chopped up steak with over cooked chicken and shrimp not worth the price: way better places in Durham. read more

The fish is not fresh and the service is to slow . They seat us and made us wait for 30 mins before taking our order . The gentleman next to us left and annoyed because of the poor service. I don't recommend this place to anyone and it's too expensive . read more

Very first time visiting this restaurant and I must say I was highly disappointed. I paid extra for filet mignon and jumbo shrimp which came up to $27. I asked for the steak to be medium, and requested onions and zucchini. What I got was not filet mignon nor jumbo shrimp. My rice was over cooked and there were mushroom in my food which I had no idea it was going to be. The steak was very chewy. I literally threw it all away. If you come here check your food before you leave!! My advice to anyone reading this review. read more

I've only ordered take out from Umami, but their sushi and rangoons are my favorite in the area. Easy ordering online, and the staff is always welcoming. One of my favorite sushi spots in the area. read more

My daughters wanted to have their bday dinner at Umami because it's usually great. Unfortunately, it was a very different experience tonight. We were in and out in 30 minute, our chef didn't have any showmanship (no flames, no flying shrimp), and the food was too salty to eat. We were in and out in 30 minutes! Disappointing experience this time around! read more

This is my favorite hibachi spot in the Triangle area. I love that they give you fried rice and lo mein with your meal. The food and service is great every time I have eaten here before the pandemic. I've ordered take out this year and the food was still great! I typically order the hibachi filet and shrimp so that's what I would recommend. read more

Shrimp flambe comes as an appetizer with the hibachi entree. They will not make a substitution. Have they not heard of shellfish allergies? They will not adjust the price if you cannot consume this life threatening food. Their suggestion is to let someone else eat it. Unacceptable. So many other restaurants make accommodations. They will not get my new business. read more

I can't believe how many times I drove by this place without taking notice. They have both a bar and teppanyaki seating areas, but the teppanyaki is the way to go. We were seated quickly and checked in on Facebook to receive a free appetizer. The pork dumplings were delicious and a pretty good sized app. There are clear shower curtains and plastic glass separators to separate diners from different parties, definitely dampened some of the fancy feel, but happy to know they are taking covid seriously. The food was delicious, we had filet and chicken and both were so good, will definitely be back again soon! read more

This place gave me food poisoning from what was supposed to be fully cooked sushi, Why did I find out that my sushi was either left out or undercooked by throwing up for at least 3 days straight. I do not recommend this place because as a Japanese restaurant why cannot you not deliver a simple sushi roll??? read more

So, I put my name on the list around 5:30pm and was told it was a 30 minute wait. We were seated about 6:45 and the chef got to the table at 7:24. He was super cool though... even though he burnt the onions, but the food turned out ok. He finished cooking at 7:54 and now I'm ready for my box to go. Probably would have been better to get take out. My suggestion would be, take a hint from Benihana and start requiring reservations on the weekends. Especially if you're understaffed. read more

Came here tonight with my 5 year old. The restaurant itself is surely attempting to practice social distancing, which I appreciate, with plastic dividers hanging from the ceiling (looks like they're shower curtains). On top of that, they created a divider per party within each table with plexiglass. Our server, Longzhao was super nice, however we could tell he was very new and not very experienced. He forgot to bring out our drinks; actually didn't come until after my sashimi came and specifically reminding him. He forgot to give us plates and silverware until I asked for it when our chef came. He also forgot to give me soy sauce with my sashimi. The chef also wasn't that great. I used to work at a popular hibachi restaurant in the area, so feel I could comment on taste of food. I actually saw some of the chefs unused to work with work here. Anyway, our hibachi was pretty salty. Chef was nice, but again not as experienced than the other chefs there. The sashimi I ordered tasted fresh. Not sure I'll come back for hibachi. Maybe just sushi/sashimi next time. read more

my daughter always brags about this restaurant. so she took me a few weeks ago. It was so good. Officially my favorite place to go to with her. read more

Unbelievably poor customer service. Called 2 hours to make reservations for dinner. We were told no reservation was necessary for two people. Arrived and was told it would be 30 min, 30 min later and was told it would be another 30 min. Explained that we called to make reservations as was told we didn't need one. Response"oh well we don't do reservations under 5 people." Then why wouldn't you tell us that when we called or at a minimum when we walked in. You just lost a very frequent repeat customer. read more

While visiting Raleigh I wanted hibachi. Yelp helped me find this gem and it did not disappoint. Chicken hibachi with noodles, rice and veggies is always my go to. I also appreciated that noodles were not extra. Why is that the new in thing?? Anyway. Friendly customer service and good food. It was early in the day so I was the only one at the hibachi table. The chef didn't seem to mind. No show or extras but I didn't mind either. I was hungry and wasn't in the mood for a show. I was ready to eat! Overall a solid choice and would definitely go back if I was in the area again. read more

Understandably on a Saturday night the wait for a table was about a hour. We put our name down and checked back in after about 40mins. After a hour we were told we would be the next up. After another hour of just 5 mins, just wait for the next table and just a couple more minutes we still had not been seated. Most frustratingly a few couples coming in after us managed to seat relatively quickly. read more

We were celebrating a birthday in the family and went to one of our favorite restaurants - Fujisan - only to find out that it has been permanently closed and replaced by Umami. We wanted to have Japanese food and since Umami was in the same place as Fujisan and shared the same cook in front of you theme, we decided to try it out. Right at the outset, we found that Hibachi menu wasn't as comprehensive as other Hibachi restaurants and was missing a lot of combos like Scallop, shrimp, with chicken etc. We went with a filet minion for me and chicken for my wife. We did a shared plate for my kid which includes a soup, rice, veggies and noodles for $5. Protein is shared from the parents entree. Fujisan had the same option but also included salad with the kids shared plate - not a big deal. The soup was good, nice and hot with good flavor. Our salad with the ginger dressing was just ok. The ginger dressing was very sweet with no ginger flavor whatsoever. I'd rather have bottled ranch! My fillet minion was pretty good and cooked medium just like I asked for. However, my wife's chicken was overcooked to the extent that she could not eat the chicken at all. The restaurants offered nothing more than a sorry. My wife didn't push it any further as she wasn't too hungry and was quite full with the rice, veggies, soup and salad served earlier. Also, the veggies were slightly over charred as the griddle was a bit too hot, but weren't too bad. Overall, it was no where close to the experience we had at Fujisan. Now, for those who had been to Fujisan before, it was just about an average Hibachi restaurant. Umami is considerably worse than it's predecessor - that should give you a fair idea of how good or bad umami is! read more

If I could give no stars, I would. It doesn't matter if I wait three weeks a few months, a few days, this place always messes up my experience, food, pricing! My most recent experience was that I made an online order, however, the order never made it to the back of the house. The manager was fully aware of this issue, yet was not proactive to ensure that all online orders were going to the back of the house. I was offered a free appetizer to wait an additional 20-30 mins. I don't want free stuff, I want you to do what you're supposed to do. In addition, the young cashier basically lied to my face and said it's not ready but knew it wasn't even placed in the back of the house. If I had not asked for him to figure how much longer it would take, I would've have waited for who knows how long for nothing. This place is literally the worst. read more

The food and portion sizes were good, but everything seemed a bit run down. The bar was well lit and looked like it had had a revamp lately but I wasn't really wowed by anything in the main dining area. Our Christmas Eve tradition dinner which used to be Fujisan. While the dining area is the same, there is a nice bar area upstairs. Hubby and I both had the Filet and Lobster. We ordered Umami for delivery. We had food comma. Everything was great, pricey but worth it

Went here to celebrate a family event, and it was not good. We were told that it would be an hour wait, but it turned out to be only 20 minutes, even though there were other parties (both larger and smaller) ahead of us. When we got to the table, we were told that they didn't have any more COVID plexiglass dividers, so we had to sit next to another party without knowing their vaccination status. The hibachi chef was nice enough, but he tossed the shrimp tails into our drinking glasses, and the food had very little flavor. We ordered a large platter of sushi to share (9 rolls), and it was dropped off well after our hibachi was done, and the server did not explain which roll was which before disappearing again. When she finally reappeared, I asked for some chopsticks and gluten-free soy sauce. Ten minutes later, she brought the utensils and low-sodium soy sauce, and disappeared again. When she came near our table again, I asked for gluten-free soy sauce, and she yelled that they didn't have any, while she was on her way to another part of the restaurant. I get that they were busy. I understood that when we went on a Friday night. But, we never felt like we were welcome or appreciated for spending money in this establishment. We did not order a second round of drinks. On our way out, the hosts didn't even acknowledge us as we walked through a mostly empty foyer. The food was meh. The hibachi show was disgusting. The service was bad. We won't be back. read more

I placed a reservation online for 7:30 and arrived to a lobby full of people who weren't social distancing at all. JUST CHAOS in general. One sweet lady came over to assure everyone that was waiting that we would be seated shortly , but the rest of the staff walked right by without assisting anyone. At this point the time now is 7:35 and no one has been helped. I then called the restaurant from the lobby to let them know me and my party was inside. The lady on the phone said they were behind and it was a two hour wait. I told her I had a reservation and she hung up the phone. Another woman literally had to go up to the counter and yell to tell them she had been waiting a hour over her reservation time to be seated with her party. At that point me and my party just left because clearly the staff didn't care about covid guidelines or their customers. I'm disgusted honestly and will not be returning. read more

I was visiting from out of town and needed to find a good restaurant to throw my mom a leap year birthday bash. The staff was easy to work with and quite accommodating. The food was delicious and plentiful. Everyone had a great time. To my surprise, no one from the area had ever heard of this restaurant. I would say they should advertise more, but as crowded as it was, I would prefer to keep this little gem a secret from others. My family will definitely be back. read more

Absolutely amazing first experience! The bartender that served us was very welcoming and kind. The ambiance is very elegant and cozy, the staff is super friendly, and best of all the food is incredible! We ordered the bang bang shrimp, seared tuna, and rainbow roll. The quality of the food was amazing and the way it was prepared was just right- nothing too sweet, too salty, or too fried. It was so good, we ordered 3 more things to take home! A+ to their chef! This is our favorite sushi restaurant in brier creek now, I will be recommending it to all my friends! read more

I Was very excited to have a last minute Christmas dinner here and was sadly disappointed. The chef seemed to focus on one family of the table ONLY. My partner and I ordered a dinner for two. All of the meats/vegetables we received were the portion of one person split in half. The rest of table was continuously loaded with food and even give extra! He tried to make it better by loading us with rice but that does not suffice. I do not recommend this for a date night unless you can command most of the table or the chef does better with evenly portioning. The food was good, I was just very disappointed with the attention and service. read more
