Japanese food is among my favorite types of cuisine in the Valley, but with how many ramen shops there are all over town, I don't usually spring for ramen unless it's truly exceptional -- and this place is exceptional. I think it might even be up there as one of my new favorite ramen spots in town, alongside Hashi in Chinatown and Kyuramen in Anthem! The best part is, with how close this restaurant is to my place, I don't have to make nearly as long of a drive if I want ramen. Umai Ramen is located in the Target shopping complex on Sunset and Stephanie, tucked away in the line of shops between Hobby Lobby and Ross. I first spotted this place when I went to the nearby H&R Block to get my taxes done earlier in the year, but I never really had an excuse to come out here until I had the ramen craving strike, and hard -- hence why I decided to bite the bullet and check the place out. One of the things that struck me immediately was their offerings -- of course, they have ramen of all types as you might guess from the name. But they also have different styles of ramen that you don't typically find anywhere, like the more elusive mazemen no-broth ramen, udon noodles, and even tsukemen-style ramen! To say nothing of some of the appetizers -- again, while they have the typical offerings of other noodle houses in town, they also have a selection of items that you really can't find anywhere else. They have multiple types of ramen with unusual toppings, such as their truffle ramen with mushrooms and steak (I need to try that next time I'm here), but I went pretty safe with their black garlic ramen, considered a signature item on their menu, and added an extra egg to it. If I were honest, I didn't need it because the ramen was so full of delicious toppings that I couldn't put my chopsticks or spoon down! Their appetizers are also a must -- I ordered their orange salmon and mango scallops, and I would highly recommend both of those as well. Between bites, the servers would check in on me, refill my water, and provide additional napkins as needed, as well. Needless to say, I'm hooked -- and already I'm thinking of the next time I go here! What will I try next? If you're in the area, give Umai Ramen a try. You just might come back for more. read more

First time here and i was literally licking my plate the food was so good! We got the creamy tonkotsu ramen and the mazemen noodles I definitely have to come back for my own order of the mazemen. Food is good but the restaurant smells cigarette smoke, I'm not sure why. Most tables are good for a party of 2 only. They only have 1 table for 4 and even if there was only 1 customer when we arrived but they would not give us the bigger table for me and my husband. The chair does not accomodate a place to hung my purse so I ate wearing my purse or purse in my lap. Staff is also distant. No one came after us and the one customer they had has finished eating and left so it's not busy at all so they could have given us the bigger table. Other tables can easily rearrange. I went for the default thick option. In addition to a wide variety of Ramen they also have an assortment of Sushi and appetizers ranging from Karaage (deep-fried chicken), Gyoza and Tempura. The chicken was crispy and delicious. The noodles had just the right amount of bite. Very enjoyableand the service was great There's one TV, playing soft-pop music. The customer service here was terrible. When we walked in, the lady told us to sit anywhere, so we did -- but no one brought menus. About 5 minutes later she came by asking if we were ready to order, even though we hadn't even seen the menu yet. When we finally got to order, she came back rushing us again. The food was honestly mediocre at best. We didn't even finish it -- we were just too hungry to leave it untouched. When I asked for salt and pepper, she rolled her eyes and then came back a few minutes later asking to take them back while we were still eating. Who does that? The place also smelled bad, there was no AC, and the vents looked like they hadn't been cleaned in ages. The kitchen area looked dirty too. We saw this little ramen shop a while ago, but I never did try until tonight! We were always curious about this restaurant, so being that the weather has been pretty cold, we went in to try their ramen. Walking in, the restaurant is small, with about a half dozen tables. We were promptly greeted as we walked in and were immediately seated. Looking around, the place is very clean and the decor is very simple. The menu has a typical mix of ramen and fried rice, but they also have fresh sushi! Ordered tonkatsu ramen, cha shu fried rice, and a crunchy sushi roll. Our food arrived fairly quickly, and we dug in. First, the fried rice looked dark with soy sauce sauce, but it was very tasty, and I was pleasantly surprised. Next up, the sushi! It was very fresh, with perfectly cooked rice, and this too was very tasty! The tonkatsu ramen came piping hot, and the noodles were cooked al dente, which to me is how it should always be. The soup was a little weak, meaning it could be a little richer, but they also sell a richer version of tonkatsu ramen as well. Maybe I'll try that version next. Overall, the food was great! As a first-time visitor to Umai Ramen, I must say I was highly impressed with the food. It's located in an extensive strip mall so parking is plentiful. I was able to find a parking spot immediately in front of the Umai Ramen upon arrival. Upon entering the establishment, seating was readily available. The menu is on a front and back lamented paper which makes it easy to order. I decided to have the Black Pepper Ramen. Their menu is pretty extensive so if you are visiting the restaurant for the first time I would recommend taking your time. The ramen was brought to the table within 10 minutes which is great for lunch. They provide one pair of metal chopsticks with a large soup spoon. If you want, they will provide wooden chopsticks which are disposable or fork. The dish itself was flavorful. The broth was at the right temperature and all the ingredients tasted fresh. Cool little place, although I felt a bit uncomfortable with the waitress standing in front of/near the kitchen area as my table was in front of her. Not that other patrons can't see you eat, but to have someone stand there the whole time was uncomfortable and unpleasant when trying to eat. I understand though if she was not allowed to go anywhere else, or if that's the most effecient place for her to be. The food was nice, I had the garlic chicken ramen, which I have never had before - it tasted a little burnt - unless it is supposed to be this way. I think plain chicken breast would be nicer instead of deep fried chicken.
