I am a baked goods enthusiast and have been on a journey to get healthy, which means I've been limiting my intake of sweets. However, everything changed when I came across a post about Umai cookies. I felt drawn to their story and was excited to discover they are local. I had to try them! I love that I could order online for next-day pickup, so I didn't have to hunt for them at a farmers market. Finding great cookies can be quite a challenge, but these cookies are absolutely delicious! They have the perfect texture--not overly sweet and not cake-like, just right. The ordering and pickup process was straightforward and hassle-free. I would definitely recommend these cookies and will be ordering from them again!

I'm here to talk about the chocolate chip cookie specifically. To judge a place right, you must try their most basic flavor. Cheese or Pepperoni Pizza at a Pizzaria, Vanilla at the gelato shop, and Chocolate Chip cookie here. I think it's a good way to see whether the skills are there or if other ingredients are needed to cover up/improve for the lack thereof (for ex. flavored beers...). And you know what? They're solid. So satisfying that I ordered another 3 dozen to share with my coworkers and then stash away in my freezer for my emergency sweet treat. My BIGGEST GRIPE with some other specialty cookies are that they're dry/ not a good balance of flavors, making some bites flavorless. These cookies are exactly what I am looking for/craving in a cookie. Buttery (AKA NOT DRY), generous with the chocolate and good variety of chocolate types to add dimension, and perfectly soft. Of course, I microwave mine. I know some that enjoy their cookie frozen/refrigerated, but I'm not a built like that. If you're like me and have a 1000 watt microwave, try 39 seconds at 90% power if warming from frozen. I dabble in crumble cookies (I enjoy trying new niche flavors) and I find that it takes me a long time to get through some of the flavors, even if I enjoy them. The one flavor I tried from here was definitely a more homemade and quality experience, for what I calculated to be a cheaper price per cookie than crumble. It looks like they are experimenting with new and unique flavors, so now that I'm confident in their classic offerings, I'm excited to be able to still get that experimental experience here too. Now that the most important part of this review is covered, I can report that the delivery was very smooth with my order, communication prompt, and cookies in good visual condition when received. I'll update as I try other flavors.

Umai posted in a local group about their cookies. I'm so glad I ordered some!! They are large, soft, gooey cookies! They are literally so good. The business owners are nice and friendly and really care about the customer experience as well as the quality of their product. They are literally. So. Good.

When I tell you these cookies are amazing.... Amazing is an under statement :) AND YOU HAVE OFFICIALLY HEARD IT FROM ME... when you think you've gotten enough for yourself and a FEW coworkers (3 coworkers to be exact...) make sure you get a few more, cause this was a HIT in my office... and I had to hide the chocolate chip from everyone, haha ^.^"

I've generally been pretty pleased with Papa Spud's. I've been seeking to purchase organic and…read morelocal now for maybe about seven or eight years now. I switched from Whole Foods to Weaver Street Market back in 2012, and then when the Durham Food Co-op opened I started going there also; however, without a car the distance just got to be too much. It was nice sometimes to read the news on my phone while on the bus system, but I decided it just took too much time, energy, and effort to go from Raleigh to Chapel Hill or from Raleigh to Durham for food shopping. So the system I have now is to buy grains and other non-perishables from Thrive Market and then fresh produce via Papa Spud's. The first order that I made from Papa Spud's was in February of 2017. I like the newsletters that they include in every box and I read them when the box arrives. There's news about farms in the area and farming, recipes, storage tips and other content. So other than that a few times I was away and forgot to cancel the order in time. But I still remembered before the actual delivery. So I just let them know that far enough in advance and they could just donate the box to charity. I had to pay for the food, but I didn't have to deal with a box of spoiled food when I got back that could attract bugs, etc. And plus the box went to charity. Overall I'd say it's been good quality. In terms of quality I remember that Papa Spud's ran a newsletter piece about food waste and people's expectations of what food ought to look like. They pointed out that a lot of food that wouldn't be likely to cause a health problem in a human nevertheless gets thrown away (or possibly eaten by animals) because people don't want to buy it and eat it. Or when they are at a grocery store they decide to pick something else. Maybe say for example because it is oddly shaped. Or another example would be that purple carrots may not sell as well in a store than orange carrots. Looking in the history section of the Wikipedia article on carrot one can see that carrots actually can range in color. There is a photo there with carrots of all different colors arranged in a circle. In the article it talks about the question of whether orange carrots were grown in the 17th century by Dutch growers to honor the Dutch flag (which was orange as it was based on the flag of Prince William of Orange-Nassau). So I had heard that before. A person by the name of Jonathan Bloom who lives in Durham wrote a book called American Wasteland about food waste in the United States which made similar points to the Papa Spud's newsletter article. Even so I could comment that they provide a way for customers to let them know if food arrives in a damaged state. I could say that I have used that so far on one occasion when I saw some mold on a strawberry. Rob M. also responded in a comprehensive way to a question that I had related to the extent of tobacco farming in the area. I read a bit about organic tobacco farming some time ago. As far as I know there hasn't been any major finding that smoking organic tobacco doesn't have the same health effects as smoking conventional tobacco. One final comment is that there are other delivery services. So doing Google searches I landed on a website called LocalHarvest.org (my brother works at the University of British Columbia Farm and had heard of the site). There was a review of one of the delivery services which stated that this provider doesn't say the source farm for the produce. The review said that they didn't want to use that because of labor conditions at certain farms. Papa Spud's will report the name of the farm although there isn't any way to search for a particular farm. In my case I'm often just buying the same veggies from the same farms (sweet potatoes, collards, kale from Wise Farms and Cox Farms). I believe I also purchased from both of their farm stands when I used to go to the North Carolina State Farmers Market. I don't know the labor conditions on all the different farms in the area, but I think it was that review that led me to pick Papa Spud's.

customer service could use a lot of work. Not helpful and condescending when we were trying to…read moreremedy the situation, which was just simply giving them our new credit card information. Big bummer. We went with another local instead.

We've had this event annually for 3 years & we've worked with Urbana Catering Concepts the last two years and we couldn't be happier with our experience from planning, to price, to the food, to the staff at the event. We were far, far happier with Urbana than the caterer we used our first year (in case you're wondering - the first year caterer was Square Rabbit). Chef Vaughn has always been really great about working with us on menu items (making suggestions & being open to ours) and working to keep us within our budget. For example - we needed a few vegan options at our event this year and Vaughn had great ideas! Since using Urbana for this event we've heard nothing but great things about the food and I can't say enough good things about the staff. They are amazingly friendly & helpful - they kept everything looking good throughout the event and even kept our donated dessert area cleaned up and looking nice. We are looking forward to working with them again next year. In summary - great food. great price. great people.

We ordered our sandwiches; I had an Italian sub, and it was just ok, kind of dry and lacking in flavor; frankly, Jersey Mike's makes a better Italian. But my wife got theReubenn, and it was simply the best Reuben we've had outside of Katz in NYC. I order Rueben's all the time, and I'm consistently disappointed. Most are dried out, have too little meat, and the corned beef is often dry, but not in this case. The sandwich was truly worthy, and we are ready to go back and have it again. Moist, flavorful meat, a generous portion, and the dressing andkraut weres well balanced. The bread was grilled, not toasted, and was itself rich and flavorful. Altogether, it is a Reuben worth driving a distance to have it. We are already planning to come back and try some of the baked goods, but also get the Reuben again too.

On the first visit, the Chicago dog was sub-par, but that was my partner's order and I don't remember the details. I just remember she said she wouldn't order it again. On today's visit, I ordered a meatball parm sandwich. It was cloyingly sweet - both the meatballs and the tomato sauce were unappetizing, and I could only manage to stand eating a bit of it. My partner ordered a side of corned beef hash. It turned up in a little paper tray with some dry shredded corned beef sprinkled on top of some home fry potatoes - just basic cubed potatoes and some beef shreds on top. That's it. It didn't feel like any corned beef hash we had ever seen. And we paid extra for a fried egg that didn't make it onto the dish. Of course when we pointed this out, it was quickly cooked up separately and brought to the table, so no problems again with the service or resolving the issue. Also be warned that Thursday nights from 6-8pm they run a music trivia game that blasts music loudly throughout the large dining space, completely surrounded by reflective surfaces. It was so loud and obnoxious that it made conversation impossible and drove us outside. I wish I could report a better experience. We need more quality delis around here!
