Because of the quarantine, I've been having groceries delivered. I don't like ordering produce from a grocery store, because I can't see it first. That's not a problem with Papa Spuds! Even though I can't see it, I know everything will come freshly picked and very clean (although I still wash it all). They say they have "grocery store prices." I'm not sure I agree--the prices were a bit higher than the stores where I usually shop, but the freshness and quality make up for the difference. At Papa Spuds, you order online between Friday afternoon and Monday at 12 p.m. From 12 to 1 on Monday, you can get discounted produce, but they had a limited selection when I tried this. Later on Monday, you get an email telling you when they'll deliver. The packaging is recyclable, and you're expected to put it out on the morning of the next delivery, so it can be reused. I like that you have the choice of buying a weekly or bi-weekly box. So I use to belong to a community garden and I enjoyed growing stuff. But life has changed and I am working more than ever. Enter Papa Spuds. I love that I can order my weekly veggies and fruits. I get to pick and choose what I want included. If I spot something extra, like some of those amazing baked goods I can just add additional funds for the week. Okay, I've only had 2 deliveries so far, but it's enough for me to know that I really really like this! Am a Produce Box fan also, and will continue to get deliveries from them as well, but what makes Papa Spud's different is they include meats and seafood! I found out about this service via Yelp and a review of Wilkerson Farms...a local Farm that is doing grass-fed beef. I really believe in supporting local, and am more than happy to pay for quality. (okay it's easier for me to say that now that the kids are grown and gone, but there should be benefits to getting to this stage in life, huh?) When I looked them up I saw they were in Willow Springs. Okay, not far, but this North Raleigh gal was not sure when she'd have time to get a little South. Then I saw that Papa Spud's delivered for them. Went online, found and saw that Papa Spuds was offering a free introductory special. SOLD. (I have no idea how often they do that or how long it lasts, but even if you have to pay the minimum set-up fee, it's worth it). Worth it, because they bring it to you! Picture this...you sign up (which doesn't take long)...they email you on a Friday to tell you what they're featuring for the week. You have all weekend to decide what you want. It can be all or part of what's featured. You place your order and on your designated day, it shows up on your doorstep! Awesome! Local local delivered. What a win-win! My first delivery that I chose included turnips, mushrooms, fresh spinach and some of the most wonderful beef I've had since childhood...ground beef that tasted like I didn't think I remembered beef could taste like. Made some awesome burgers! Even smelling them cooking was really great! And Husband loved the sauteed mushrooms I treated him to. Tonight we had flounder that was delivered today. Fresh fillets that I baked up in wine, lemon and shallots, sprinkled with bread crumbs, parmesan, lemon rind and fresh parsley. Yum! Delivery packaging is recycled...you leave out what they brought the week before, they pick it up, and drop off your new order. AWESOME. You get quality and it's FUN to see what they're offering each week! They even tell you that they have a discount period on Mondays from 12-1...so far I've missed that, but will try to keep an eye out in the future. Simply Wonderful! Papa Spuds sends great produce and meats, much of it local and organic. If there's a problem ( very rare ) they take care of it and solve it immediately. I've been ordering for years. In addition to ordering available produce, meat, eggs,cheese, etc., each week there are always several choices of meal kits that include most of the ingredients you need to make the meal. They are easy to make and delicious. Each week are also other timely recipes and other information. If need to place a hold on your deliveries, for one week or several, that's easy. Nearly all the packaging materials are recycleable and returned in the empty box each week for re-use. That really makes me happy, but what really makes a difference, we are supporting local farmers. read more

I've generally been pretty pleased with Papa Spud's. I've been seeking to purchase organic and local now for maybe about seven or eight years now. I switched from Whole Foods to Weaver Street Market back in 2012, and then when the Durham Food Co-op opened I started going there also; however, without a car the distance just got to be too much. It was nice sometimes to read the news on my phone while on the bus system, but I decided it just took too much time, energy, and effort to go from Raleigh to Chapel Hill or from Raleigh to Durham for food shopping. So the system I have now is to buy grains and other non-perishables from Thrive Market and then fresh produce via Papa Spud's. The first order that I made from Papa Spud's was in February of 2017. I like the newsletters that they include in every box and I read them when the box arrives. There's news about farms in the area and farming, recipes, storage tips and other content. So other than that a few times I was away and forgot to cancel the order in time. But I still remembered before the actual delivery. So I just let them know that far enough in advance and they could just donate the box to charity. I had to pay for the food, but I didn't have to deal with a box of spoiled food when I got back that could attract bugs, etc. And plus the box went to charity. Overall I'd say it's been good quality. In terms of quality I remember that Papa Spud's ran a newsletter piece about food waste and people's expectations of what food ought to look like. They pointed out that a lot of food that wouldn't be likely to cause a health problem in a human nevertheless gets thrown away (or possibly eaten by animals) because people don't want to buy it and eat it. Or when they are at a grocery store they decide to pick something else. Maybe say for example because it is oddly shaped. Or another example would be that purple carrots may not sell as well in a store than orange carrots. Looking in the history section of the Wikipedia article on carrot one can see that carrots actually can range in color. There is a photo there with carrots of all different colors arranged in a circle. In the article it talks about the question of whether orange carrots were grown in the 17th century by Dutch growers to honor the Dutch flag (which was orange as it was based on the flag of Prince William of Orange-Nassau). So I had heard that before. A person by the name of Jonathan Bloom who lives in Durham wrote a book called American Wasteland about food waste in the United States which made similar points to the Papa Spud's newsletter article. Even so I could comment that they provide a way for customers to let them know if food arrives in a damaged state. I could say that I have used that so far on one occasion when I saw some mold on a strawberry. Rob M. also responded in a comprehensive way to a question that I had related to the extent of tobacco farming in the area. I read a bit about organic tobacco farming some time ago. As far as I know there hasn't been any major finding that smoking organic tobacco doesn't have the same health effects as smoking conventional tobacco. One final comment is that there are other delivery services. So doing Google searches I landed on a website called LocalHarvest.org (my brother works at the University of British Columbia Farm and had heard of the site). There was a review of one of the delivery services which stated that this provider doesn't say the source farm for the produce. The review said that they didn't want to use that because of labor conditions at certain farms. Papa Spud's will report the name of the farm although there isn't any way to search for a particular farm. In my case I'm often just buying the same veggies from the same farms (sweet potatoes, collards, kale from Wise Farms and Cox Farms). I believe I also purchased from both of their farm stands when I used to go to the North Carolina State Farmers Market. I don't know the labor conditions on all the different farms in the area, but I think it was that review that led me to pick Papa Spud's. read more

Papa Spud's is simply fantastic!! I really enjoy the convenience of fresh, delicious locally grown food delivered to my doorstep weekly. The food is consistently fresh and excellent quality with a generous selection of healthy options to chose from at a great price. The delivery box is (reused), sturdy, clean and insulated with fresh fruits and vegetables bundled with minimal packaging! I've recently started purchasing by the recipe which has been enjoyable as the recipes are fantastic and varied with quick preparation time as a basis. The recipes feature seasonal foods as well. Most of the recipes are gluten free and while I do purchase eggs, cheese and meat, there are so many vegetarian options. So "Santa" stuffed our stocking with a subscription to Papa Spud's. Bless that jolly old man. He must be looking out for my health and monies! I'd been researching CSA options for 2012, and happened to be out for drinks with a friend who had nothing but good things to say about Papa Spud's as an alternative. I took a look at the site, and even though I'd already filled a form, penned a check, and signed & sealed an envelope for a different group, I decided to pinch-hit. I mean "Santa" decided... Some advantages against other programs I looked at: Delivery right to your door (as opposed to specific pick-up times from a farmer's market) The option to push back deliveries if you're going to be out of town for a week The opportunity to pay monthly and cancel at any time The option to choose EXACTLY which items you want from week-to-week; it's like shopping at the Farmer's Market without the hassle! There's also an option to let them surprise you each week... but you can even tailor this to your tastes by filling out their thorough "preferences" form. Eg, you could choose to never receive anything from the meat category. And more narrowly, you could vote that, within the veggie category, you "love" avocado, you "like" bok choy, and you "dislike" celery (oh VILE vegetable!!!). They'll use these preferences in determining what and how much as they build your basket. Lots to choose from: whether you want cheese, meat, eggs, produce, or fresh baked breads Website supports user profiles and recipe submissions, which adds some community value The sustainable stuff: Packaging is minimal and reused. When I read Lori R's review of Papa Spud's, I knew this was for me! I received the produce box for the past two summers and just found that too often we were receiving items we didn't eat and it went bad. What is so great about Papa Spud's is not only are you able to pick and choose your items if you want, but there are so many more options to choose from. We now get all of our dairy and meats from Papa Spud's so that we know where our meat came from (grass fed cows and local farmers) AND there are many more things like from the Hillsborough Bread Company, various cheeses, sweet goods, cookies, etc., all from local growers! It really doesn't get much better than that! Our delivery runs on Wednesdays so when we get home those afternoons, we have a fresh box of goodies waiting for us. We are meat eaters so it makes us feel much better about what goes into our bodies, no steroids/hormones/antibiotics, and cows are happy, like the smiling dancing ones on tv....or so I imagine. Our cart is already pre-filled when we get the email on Fridays that the ordering is ready and we can either change it or add items to it. I can not say enough good things about Papa Spud's. There are so many perks for this service over the other CSAs in the area. For one, they let you pay week by week, and skip week(s) as needed. Secondly, you can choose to let them pick the box for you, or make your own choices, which extend as far as Maple View products, fantastic cheeses, breads, and meats. Thirdly, and really the most amazing perk of Papa Spud's, is that every Monday starting at noon (on the dot), they discount all surplus products for any customer that has spent at least 17 credits that week. This leads to AMAZING deals. Like, crazy amazing. These deals alone make PS work out to be the cheapest local food around. Aside from the great selection, perfect food quality, and to-your-door delivery, Papa Spud's is run by the most kind and customer service oriented people I can imagine. I finally joined a CSA. And the only reason I joined was because I loved the flexibility and assortment that Papa Spud's offered. Several people had recommended it to me and once I arrived in the area, it was one of the first things that I setup. To be honest, I'm horrible at eating my veggies. But a good friend got me into juicing and I thought a fresh veggie delivery box would be a great way to keep variety in my juices, and also translate over to the dining room table. I setup my account on a Wednesday, by Friday I was able to view the recommended box, make my small changes, and submit my order. On Tuesday, it arrived, and I was not disappointed. Is it possible for the delivery of a box of fruits and veggies to feel like Christmas? It totally did. I had a beautiful assortment of fresh fruits and veggies, all customized to my taste. I spent 10 minutes setting up my preferences on their website and am excited to see what the next week brings. They enclosed a little packing list as well as a recipe for one of the items in my box. They ask that you save the box and packing material from the previous week to place out on the day of your next delivery. I love that they're reusing all of the materials and leave a small footprint. Oh, and on Mondays, just after your order goes through, you can purchase amazing deals of items that they have excess of. I haven't used this feature yet as I already had quite a lot ordered, but I think it's great and another way to get more bang for your buck! read more

I am extremely frustrated with Papa Spuds technical and customer service problems. They seem to be unable to provide me with a password that works to allow me to access my account consistently. Increasingly on order day and on reduced price day, my password fails. They finally do give me a new password but not in a timely manner so I have been missing out on product availability and reduced prices -- yet there is NO accommodation and I am being charged the same amount despite these problems. They cannot fix the problem despite repeated requests. Plus, their product quality varies greatly. I stopped ordering beans because they arrive in poor shape with lots of brown spots and often shriveled. When I send a photo showing the poor quality, no refund is offered. Ordering 1 or 1.5 pounds of onions, they send I humongous onion which rots quickly once cut. read more

I don't remember how I came across Papa Spud's, but I am sure glad I did! I've been using this service for about two months now and I am very happy with it. The service is convenient, and the food is delicious. You use their website to choose the foods that you want included in the box, and they deliver it to your door. The food is priced differently depending on where it comes from, whether it is organic, etc. On Mondays, there is an hour long window when a bunch of the produce is available at a discounted rate, too. Price wise, your not exactly saving money but you aren't necessarily spending more either, particularly depending on what you include in your box. You have the control over what you get. It's a great way of making sure you have lots of healthy fresh food around the house. read more

I fully agree with the other reviewers - I love Papa Spud's. People probably think I get paid to talk them up all the time, but I don't, I just love the service. I love that I can pick what I want and how often I want to receive it. I love that I have a choice of different size boxes (which is basically how much food you get). I love the variety they have and how they specify whether it is local/organic/pesticide-free. I think the cost for the amount of items that I receive is a great deal and it makes me cook healthier and more often, which is really important to me. I've only had one minor issue with an item missing in the year+ that I've used the service and they refunded the credits immediately, with no problems. Love them! read more

I have been ordering from Papa Spud's for a long time now and I love it! There is nothing better than coming home from work and your shopping is done for you waiting by the door! All the produce is always so fresh! I have only had a problem once with a red onion - and you can't always tell from the outside when an onion is not so good on the inside. I called them and they credited my account right away. This is a great service for busy families to continue to eat fresh, healthy foods. There are no words to describe how truly spectacular this service is. I've been a member since May and I have eaten and juiced more vegetables and fruits in the past 4 months than all of last year combined. I am a picky eater with very limited budget(grad student). The biggest draws to this program are the fact that you can choose which weeks you want the food delivered, you can choose what you want, its fresh picked and not sitting in a freezer or shelf for weeks, and it doesn't break the bank. I don't find this service to be very different from the prices of similar organic products at local supermarkets. Wow! I'm so impressed by Papa Spuds produce! I have recently joined because getting good quality fresh produce delivered to my door became a need during the corona virus lockdown. (My daughter has an autoimmune disease and I can't risk running around). We tried InstaCart and other grocery store delivery services, which work OK for packaged, canned or other items that can be substituted. However produce was rarely available, never guaranteed to be in stock (you can't substitute a fruit or veggie, if they don't have them you just don't get them) and time slots were scarce to get. Enter Papa Spuds to help us out! Our whole family of 6 get so excited when it's delivered because the only other place they have seen produce look and taste so good is the Farmers Market! My daughters look up recipes to try cooking new things and look online with us during ordering windows to see the new offerings each week. The system is super easy to use once you sit down and figure it out. It's become a big hit in our family. Wish we would have found out about Papa Spuds years ago but we will be continuing it here on out for sure. My senior MIL also joined at the same time (was having the same issues getting produce delivered) and she has been very happy and a lot less stressed knowing she will get healthy food each week. We LOVE Papa Spud's! We can get local produce, meats, dairy, eggs, seafood and much more. Best of all, you can either stick with the weekly standard box or choose what you want! Customer service has always been stellar and quality of product is excellent. But if you ever do have any issue, they will make it right immediately.
