5/14/14 UPDATE
I spoke to Gina, the store manager, on Tuesday. She was very kind and told me I did not have to wait until Thursday for a fix. She scheduled me for a fix on Wednesday night. Jerrico was the stylist and he was very kind also. He explained there was a difference in cutting styles among the schools and this may be why what I wanted was not understood by the first stylist. I was refunded my money for the first cut as well. Amelia, the manager on duty that night, called me the next day to offer me a free glazing and blow out. Ultimately, I feel they came through with good customer service. I like the Paul Mitchell style so I will probably just go back there for my cuts but I appreciate that Ulta made good on my dissatisfaction.
A little about me - I've been going to hairdressers in NYC since I was 13 years old. I know my hair and I know what looks good. I can honestly say in all that time - I'm 52 - I have only gotten 2 really bad cuts. This is one of them.
I had gone to this Ulta salon about a year ago and got a lovely cut. So, I decided to go again and pay the $48 just before Mother's day 2014. I had gone to the Paul Mitchell school about 2 months earlier and they did a FANTASTIC job with cut and color. But I wanted a little more layering - they were a bit conservative with those - and I didn't want to make the trip to Staten Island. Anyway, I was optimistic to go to this ulta store based on my prior experience. When I spoke to the stylist, I told her exactly that - I loved what they did at Paul Mitchell, I just wanted some more layering since my hair is very thick. She proceeded to cut while chatting to me about kids, etc. and then blew dry the style. I noticed I didn't like the way she blew it dry because I don't style it that way, but I figured I go home and fix it my way anyway.
When I got home, I noticed the "layers" were basically all on two levels. My hair looked like a split level house, a layer in the middle and a layer for the ends BUT no blending or feathering in between. PLUS there were pieces of hair that were totally uneven, like they were missed when she cut. No matter how I tried to style it, it just looked awful. The next day, I left it to dry naturally, hoping the slight wave in my hair might help out the weird layering. It did not.
I called the store and spoke to the store manager. She was very helpful and nice and said they wanted the customer to be happy. She scheduled me for the next day at 7pm with the salon manager. I was good with that. The next afternoon, monday, the salon manager called me and asked what was the problem. I explained the layering issue. She then told me she needed to reschedule the appt. for Thursday at 7. I told her I didn't want to wait until then. She asked when I could come in I told her I couldn't do earlier than 6:30 because I work. She then began to explain something about sometimes the hair needs to grow out a bit. I told her that this was not gonna grow out. I asked if there was anytime sooner I could come in. She said Wednesday around 1 or 2. Otherwise it would have to be Thursday at 7pm. I said well I could just come in and get my money back. She said I still had to see her first before that could happen. I told her I guess I'd have to do it then. She told me to bring a picture of what I wanted and she would see if we could cut my hair that way or have to do something else. I didn't feel comfortable with THAT answer. My hair looked bad enough without having to do "something else". She was not as nice as the first woman I spoke to and even seemed more reticent to fix any problem and more impatient. AND I didn't feel comfortable having to switch appts and not have this issue taken care of ASAP.
I learned my lesson. I will NEVER go back to this place again. They screwed up my hair and then take their OWN time to rectify it. Fixing the problem should be done as soon as possible so the customer can look decent again, whether they fix it or not. Plus, I feel like you get two different types down here - one that is very customer oriented and another who is not. I intend to go down and speak to a store manager when I have the time and get my money back before Thursday.
Folks in the area, just take the drive to Paul Mitchell school on Staten Island. They do great work and charge me around $40 for a cut AND color while this place charged $48 for a bad cut. read more
