Absolutely loved this salon! I got a groupon for a haircut and deep conditioning for a great price. When I called to make an appointment the receptionist was super kind and able to get me in the following week. I was given a tour of the salon and it is very clean and decorated wonderfully. I was also introduced to all the people working that day including the owner who was super nice! Johnathan was my hair stylist today and he really took the time to look at my hair before washing it and helping me decided what I wanted done and what would be best for me. Purchased a Groupon on whim and so glad I found it. Since moving to the area it has been so hard to find someone that takes care of my curls. My hair was extremely damaged and dry from the abuse and my curls were in need of some serious TLC. a salon I was frequenting was putting chemical relaxer in the shampoo to "soften" the hair and it DESTROYED my curls. Cori was my stylist and she conditioned and recommended a cut to get my curls back in the right path. I couldn't be happier. The salon is beautiful and they offer so many different services including waxing and a room just for special hair treatments. Finding the perfect salon for anyone is very difficult. For years I've been searching for a non-stuck up hair salon, edgy, and not overpriced for what you get. A lot of salons you just pay for the ambience. I went home just before the holidays and a salon that i've gotten my hair done before was busy so I had to find a place that was experienced in various hair straightening techniques and a place I actually would like. Through a lot of searching, (there are plenty of salons in the area) I stumbled upon this salon. I randomly called inquiring about their hair straightening and they receptionist put me on the phone with Julie. We talked for a couple of minutes about what i've done with my hair, texture, etc she did not one bit try to rush me off the phone but without forcing me to being locked into something she offered to do a consultation. They were very good at giving directions and where to park, which was such a help. I walk into the salon and was greeted by some of the staff. They showed me around the salon and brought me to my chair. Julie came up to me and she was very warm and inviting. She took a really good look at my hair and told me that the Magic Sleek was perfect for my hair and offered to redo my hair. Scheduled an appointment with her (they have a couple of spaces for clients who will be at the salon for 3+ hours- plus) Julie was the main person working on my hair, but a couple of other stylists helped out too and they were fantastic. I cannot remember their names. My hair came out perfect! LOVED it! She made sure everything was perfect. And she didn't force me into getting a cut like a lot of places tend to do. My hair is sleek and smooth. I like how all of the stylists have a 2 year training program at the salon. This way they can help out whenever needed and expand their knowledge of various types of hair. I cannot say how much I loved Julie, I will be returning to see her. I went there to get a haircut and I explained how I want my hair cut. Instead the back of my hair was cut at an angle the stylist tried to fix it but instead it ended up shorter and still at an angle. Had to have it fixed by someone else as I didn't want to lose anymore length. I was also told one price from one person before getting the hair cut then the price was changed to a higher amount when I went to pay. They are also very pricey compared to what I have paid else where. read more

I'm also sorry to say, I spent over $200 for cut and color and it was far from worth it.. I had to hold my tears back as I walked out and not a single person in the salon could even tell what color my hair was (definitely a red flag). I mean I guess I can say I'm lucky my hair wasn't burned off and that I still have my length. My hair was cut wet and she didn't cut it again after blow drying it, so my layers and my bangs don't blend into the rest of my hair and I have to wear it up every day because I'm so embarrassed. Moral of the story.. Not everyone has a good hair day, but speak up if you're not happy, I've seen them do really great work there and if it's not what you want I'm sure it's fixable. read more

Lauren gave me a tour of the salon (which is quite lovely, and bigger than it appeared considering it's on the second floor on Main St). She consulted with me on my hair and gave me a great cut. FANTASTIC cut. But never, ever will I visit again because of their business practices. I bought a Groupon and they immediately told me they were going to charge me an additional $20 over the phone when I mentioned I would be using a Groupon. They never even met me before telling me about the additional charge. They said it was because I had curly hair. They told me they would be charging me $20 for curly hair EVEN BEFORE THEY MET ME! I got my cut-I was again informed at the salon it was because I have curly hair. FYI-I don't have curly hair! When I complained to Groupon Chips said they tried to call me-liars-they did not. Very unprofessional and impolite. I had made an online appointment for a haircut but AFTER I arrived I was told very rudely by the lady at the front desk that there was no one there to cut my hair because they don't allow online scheduling anymore. Every time I asked to reschedule she would tell me that there is no one at the salon to do it and that they were over capacity then hung up on me abruptly. I understand the stress with the coronavirus but I would have appreciated a phone call telling me I wouldn't be getting my hair done prior to arriving. read more

I have been looking for a local salon for quite a while. I like to try out a salon for the first time by reviewing offers on Groupon, which was how I came upon CHIPS. They could not have been more pleasant, polite and were not at all put off by my using this deal, which I do find happens at some places (why offer a deal if you're going to grumble about honoring it)? I was shown around the salon, introduced to the owner, but most importantly, experienced such excellent service. The experience of the deep conditioning treatment and the cut was wonderful. The entire staff is welcoming and makes you feel comfortable from the minute you walk in the door until the moment you leave. Lauren G. has been cutting my hair here for 5+ years. After years of bad haircuts, I won't let anyone else touch my hair. Having curly hair, it's difficult to find someone who understands how different parts of your hair can grow at different rates and every piece curls differently. Lauren will cut wet or dry, depending on what look we're trying to achieve. Prices are reasonable compared with salons that offer similar services in the area. Being a resident of this area for all my life I have tried SOO many hair salons, and I have to say Chips Salon is FABULOUS, and exactly what I was looking for in a Salon! Only being there a few times, the overall atmosphere is fun, friendly, and professional. It is a mix of both younger and older stylist. The first time I went I was taking my changes considering I had short hair, I put my trust in the stylist, Harleigh, and she did exactly what I wanted. From the moment I sat in her chair she asked me all the necessary questions.. and from their she asked about what products I use and like. She is super down to earth, and was very personable. I have not yet done color there but they do have a cute color bar area sectioned off in the Salon with a TV , and an area that has food and beverages which is also a nice touch. I came here specifically to get a style for my curly hair. After spending $90 on my cut, I can't say that I have a great style. I'm not sure why it was so expensive for what I got. Years ago, I went to a salon in NYC specializing in curly hair, and my cut was so good I got complements months later! It was worth the $$$. This didn't happen here, unfortunately. I had a lot of new growth in my long hair, so I'll admit it's a bit awkward. But the stylist did the "slide the scissor down your hair" thing, which pretty much gave me thicker hair on top and really thin hair toward the bottom. I'll be going elsewhere. Never in my life have a reviewed an establishment, however this place was worth making an account for. First off, made an appointment same day for a blowout got right in, which now I know why. The stylist who took me told me she was an extension specialist which seemed pretty awesome until you ask her what brand and she doesn't know. Off to a great start!!! I am in the chair for almost 2 hours for a blowout, yes I have extensions but my blowouts usually take 45-60 minutes which is why I thought I was able to be back to work during my lunch hour. Finally after I politely asked to move my blowout along, I finally finish and go to check out and my blowout is SIXTY-FIVE DOLLARS!!!!- appalling. I have been to high end salons in red bank and have never paid more than 50 dollars for a blowout, 65 in the middle of Freehold boro is disturbing. Finally I leave this place only to find out they did not use sulfate free shampoo On me which RUINED my extensions, now if you have extensions you know how expensive the hair is, I was forced to buy new hair. Some extension specialists who's don't even know how to use the right shampoo!! HA. Never again will I step foot in this so called "salon" and I advise anyone who loves their hair to do the same. read more

Colleen was excellent at staying in touch throughout the year making sure everything was going according to plan and updating me with any changes necessary. When we arrived, we were happy to find bagels and mimosas waiting for us and a detailed plan of who was doing hair/make up and when. 9 women, 18 services, in and out in 4 hours! I had a pretty good experience. They are all very friendly which is important to me. They did nice work. It's very modern inside. Prices are decent but there is some limitation with using credit card which I did not know beforehand. They encourage Oiudad products and I like they are not pushy about it. Sorry to say...I had a bad experience here. The salon boasts being a Ouidad curly hair certified salon. I don't want to mention the name of the stylist, but she really did a bad hack job on my hair. It was just OK for the first few days, but after that, I noticed that it was cut in a pattern of a 70's shag. The ends were cut jagged. You don't cut curly hair that way! The hair was messy and frizzier than when I walked in the door, and continued to frizz to the point where it was unmanageable, and no curl existed. Everyone that is raving about this salon in these reviews probably has long, straight hair. That's the trouble with stylists today - that's all they know how to do - work with a straight hair cut, straighten it by blowing it out, and give Keratin treatments. This does not apply to everyone that walks in the door. I am very disappointed. Another thing that was not mentioned to me when booking was that they prefer not to use credit cards. When I booked the appointment and they knew that I was a new client, they should have mention this fact. When they do accept them because that's all you brought with you, the merchant fee for using the card is placed on the client and not the business. I have never heard of such a thing!!! The girl that did my hair, (I don't remember her name, she was African American with glasses) was sooooooo rude to me and literally destroyed my hair. I got in my car and cried. I tried this place because it's in my neighborhood. The owner Onita was very sweet and listened to what I wanted done to my hair. Although she said she could give me the cut I wanted (a simple basic short layered cut), it didn't work out that way. The cut was awful. I had to continuously trim and shape it myself at home until it grew out enough to go elsewhere for a new cut. Well trained, continually educating themselves on cutting edge techniques, very friendly, a very CLEAN salon. If you have curly hair, this is the place for you. If you don't have curly hair, this is STILL the place for you. The staff is a great team that works so well together, led by their Team Leader, Onita.
