Full disclosure: I had a one-time discount opportunity here and that may have influenced my coming to the store in the first place. That and the jingle, which my kids spontaneously break out into song with. Now that I've been here, however, I'll be a future customer again. I came in search of a fresh-looking pair of frames for my ten year old, who is starting to care quite a bit more about what her glasses look like (i.e. no stars, hearts, rainbows, spider webs, or gems on the sides). There is a small but mighty kids' frame selection, and it is important to note that at least the pair of frames she picked ended up being $20 cheaper than a pair at Target that were similar. I was pleasantly surprised to hear that my insurance was one of the 9 that Ulla could process out of network insurance reimbursement for as well. The cherry on top was the one year full warranty (which I have had to purchase in the past elsewhere) that was included. Because kids are so gentle on their glasses, right?! Emma was helpful and patient, and took time to look up my benefits for me. One thing that really impressed me was the fact that while I was there, two separate customers came in to have their glasses tightened and went out of their way to tell staff (and myself) how many complements they received on their frames. There are some fabulously unique frames there, and when I'm ready for a new pair of frames myself I will go back there to look for them. read more

She gave me her card with several of my preferred styles written down. When I had my prescription ready, I went right back to Ulla. So many issues from wrong prescription, don't stand behind their guarantee nor their discount offer on other glasses (I wanted non-prescription sunglasses). I scheduled another appointment to verify prescription was correct and ophthalmologist verified the glasses were not the prescription written. Was also given information and had a witness but the employee and manager repeatedly stated I was wrong and would not replace the glasses or lenses. $800 later--still have not worn glasses but can't bring myself to stop using them as a desk decoration. read more

I have been patronizing this locally-owned, woman-owned business for years, ever since they first opened in Hilldale. I have been through a Who's Who list of the lines they have carried in that time: Pro|Design Denmark, Lafont (x3 or more), Oliver Peoples, Chanel, Dior and, most recently, SALT (also a Madison-owned, in part, line, I came to find out). I've also confidently sent friends and family to Ulla over the years, to excellent outcomes in all cases. I appreciate Ulla because of their customer service. They have a long-term set of employees, which is helpful to customers who patronize the store over the years. When I've needed a rush job due to travel or, in one case, a car accident, the staff went out of their way to make it happen - at no extra cost to me. When I casually mentioned that I was on probably my eighth pair of glasses, the manager offered me a discount in honor of that fact. She sure didn't have to do that to keep my business, but having done so really made me feel that going local has its rewards. Ulla's staff has also been up front with me over the years about why they have made the decisions about the lines they carry. When I inquired about one popular line they no longer had, the staff member explained to me that they felt they were having too many returns due to glasses that couldn't stand up to daily wear and tear. Even though the manufacturer was fixing the frames as they came in for repair, they no longer felt they could risk their own reputation by carrying that line, despite the frames being quite costly and no doubt considerable sellers. I appreciated the honesty and the unwillingness to sell anything less than high quality. When my own delicate frames were slightly cosmetically damaged inadvertently by the process of putting new lenses in, Ulla staff went to their company representatives in France to obtain a new frame - no longer sold - to replace the damaged part. Essentially, they gave me a new set of glasses and apologized for the error. Ulla is also glad to see their customers drop in for a frame adjustment, as wear tends to losen or bend frames over time. The adjustments are free, and they'll give the glasses a clean for you, as well - always with a smile and never any pressure or attitude. They also happily tightened up my friend's frames, clearly bought elsewhere, while we were at it. I appreciate small local businesses like Ulla, who thrive by bringing high-end products and a deep commitment to customer service to our small city. Many times I have been asked by friends and strangers alike where I got my glasses. Check out Ulla - particularly during one of their trunk or other sales, when you might get a very high-end pair of frames for 20% or more off. Then enjoy the kind of customer service that you won't see at your mall in-about-an-hour glasses shop, or at other local places that scold you for touching the merchandise. read more

Yes, maybe a bit pricier but the selection and service are as good as it gets! I haven't written a review in years as I just haven't been in awe of many businesses these days. Especially high-end retailers where I've been underwhelmed to say the least, but Ulla is a world of difference. Keely, Margot and the rest of the staff are knowledgeable and not just committed but passionate about taking care of their customers. Their dedication to me finding the right fit made the entire process of buying eye-wear for the first time both comfortable and worth every penny. I came to Ulla years ago after a horrible experience at LensCrafters (shocker, I know). They have a lot of unique frames that have gotten me many compliments over the years from both friends and strangers. It's not secret their frames are expensive but that's because they aren't mass produced by a single company that controls 99% of the eyeglass industry. I've had cheap and "expensive" glasses from the big chains but they always end up falling apart or failing. The first pair of glasses I bought at Ulla I was able to customize. It was on the cheaper end of the spectrum but they've held up and look great. I went back a little bit later to get a second frame because my prescription had changed. This is where I became a customer for life. I custom build this frame but ended up scratching it when I accidentally walked into something. No worries because they took care of it. When I received my new pair, the metal coating wore off a few months later. No worries because they ordered a new one. When that new pair arrived, the same thing happened! No worries because they let me put the FULL purchase price towards a new pair. I end up with a more expensive but gorgeous all wood frame. I had something happen to that pair (can't remember the problem). No worries because they ordered a new one. The new pair arrived with the wrong nose pads. No worries because they put in temporary nose pads and ordered a new pair. I mean, come on... where else other than a small local business can you get this amazing of customer service?? Every time I get complimented on these glasses, I tell them where I got them from because they've been so good to me I almost feel like I owe them! Seriously their customer service is top notch. I don't think I'll get better service at any other glasses place ever. They also moved to a bigger location at Hilldale (just across the street from the old one). Sounds like the plan is to get an eye doctor in-house too. Check them out! As for the staff there Margot is by far my favorite. Very friendly and down-to-Earth. I recently broke my glasses in a freak accident while cleaning out my car. I LOVE my glasses and (as I bought them at Ulla) they were not cheap. I brought them in to Ulla with doom in my mind expecting to simply have to buy a new pair of glasses. The gentleman working indicated they could contact the manufacturer (provided they were not from the bespoke line) and have replacement frame fronts shipped in for half the cost of new frames--still not cheap, but substantially less than new glasses. When the frames arrived the process of installing my old lenses and attaching the stems could not have been quicker or easier. I will not buy glasses anywhere else so long as I live in or near Madison. Kudos, Ulla. Thank you. read more

I purchased a pair of Salt glasses from Ulla in December of 2011 and I could not be happier with the entire process. Ulla's staff is simply top-notch. I visited the store multiple times before making my purchase and was greeted with professional and friendly service every time. They go beyond your expectations - I was on the fence about the color of my frames, so they ordered multiple frames and had them shipped to the store. I was able to try on different colors and styles and I felt that they genuinely cared about me finding the perfect fit. Their products are as quality as their employees. I spent a few hundred dollars in this store and I feel totally disappointed and dissatisfied. In my opinion their customer service is much below my expectation. Even though I spent a few hundreds, I don't even use the sunglasses that I bought from this store because I found a much better option in another store with a much better price. This store didn't seem to have the most recent products to me. I even found them very rude in answering the questions. I was asking questions about sunglasses and the older lady seemed very upset and rude and unwilling to assist me. I found much better options in another store with better customer service. I had a lot of problem asking them to cancel my order and return my money. They were not very helpful in returning and reimbursement. I don't recommend this store to any of the friends. read more

I spent a few hundred dollars in this store and I believe it was total waste of time and money spending here. Customer service was awful. First I ordered a sunglasses for a few hundred dollars. I still have it but it is absolutely useless. I also ordered a pair of glasses for another few hundreds with a middle aged lady over there. I even paid for that and got the receipt. They were supposed to ship it. After a long time that I didn't hear from them I found out they don't have it. It was very weird because they didn't even reimbursed my money until I told them to do that. They didn't even apologize for their lack of customer service skill and rudeness. Horrendous service! I have been a long-standing customer of Ulla for over 7 years since I moved to Madison because they have always carried an elite line of frames that are hard to find in other retail stores. However, my last episode with them has changed my viewpoint entirely. Here's the story: I scratched lenses on some new glasses I purchased and had to have them replaced. I was told, to my delight, that this was covered under warranty and that I would have replacement lenses in up to two weeks time. I also noted the sign just above their cashier that reads that lens orders will take up to 14 days. That's longer than I needed, but I was willing to wait. As a graphic designer, my eyes are crucial to my work and I had to wear older glasses (i.e older prescription) for two weeks... or so I thought. Two weeks passed and not a word from Ulla. It was approaching 3 weeks and I stop by to see what may be the delay. I was told the lab ruined the replacement lenses and that it would take two-three days longer. I waited. On the fourth day, I called and was told another two-three days. Then another two days. Up to this point, Ulla did not call me once. I had to call them until I finally demanded they call me once they know when my glasses would be in. Finally, FOUR weeks passed and my glasses are back with new lenses. I paid top-dollar for the glasses and I expect quality service. I demanded an explanation why it took so long. With her nose in the air, the clerk explain that it takes three weeks for lenses to be ordered. I explained that this is not what I was told and even showed her the little sign above the cashier that claims "up to 14 days". She responded snobbishly that it takes three weeks and that they came in only a few days after three weeks (never mind a whole week after). No other excuse for the delay was given. The worst part: the lenses were not fitted properly on the frames!! One side was too short and the lens popped off just by taking the frame off. So I have to take them back and do this whole fiasco again. When I called to explain the situation about the lenses. The guy on the phone argued with me and tried to make it sound like I was just exaggerating. Not one single apology was given to a customer who did not hide the fact that he was very upset. This is not just about a product that we want like shoes. It's about a medical item that I need in order to see and work effectively. Had I had any idea that I would have to endure the headaches from wearing old glasses for this long, I would have taken my business elsewhere. And now I know that this is exactly what I will do. Beware of Ulla Eyewear. They're extremely arrogant and their service is the worst. They have good frames and carry good brands, but nothing that you cannot by online. read more

As a recent NYC transplant, I was craving some fun, bold & unique glasses. Every since meeting Margot and sharing our love of all things funky, fashion eye wear from vintage to clean classic and sophisticated, I knew I had found my perfect eye wear shop! I love the selection of frames, and I would stop in regularly to try on any new items they got it. I love that they let you freely go about and pick and try on there frames, while there attentive and super friendly staff offers there objective feedback on fit/size/style. They even help to take your picture, so you can go home and think about it, no pressure :) This was definitely refreshing customer service, after getting scolded for handling any frames at Eyeopia. My boyfriend and I stopped in here last weekend to try on some frames and get a better feel for sizing since we both have rather wide faces. Unfortunately most of the product was out of our price range, but despite that it was unlikely we would make a purchase that day, Neil (our salesman) was still very helpful, polite, and fun, quite a delight! Came here to get some new glasses as my others were an old prescription. They were fantastic and very helpful in finding interesting frames that fit my face. Ulla has a vast array of unique frames that are much higher quality than you can find elsewhere. I found Ulla after getting so fed up with LensCrafters (LensCrafters has an amazing ability to mess up an order 4 times in a row). Ulla is a great small business with friendly staff so after visiting the store a few times, I decided to buy a pair of glasses even though their prices are higher than mainstream retailers like LensCrafters. Their prices are justified, however, because the quality is much better than what you can get elsewhere. For example the pair that I got from LensCrafters was one of the most expensive frames in the store but ended up falling apart because the joints were glued together. The first pair of glasses from Ulla looked great! ...until I walked into a wall and had a huge vertical scratch on the lens. No problem for Ulla - there was some type of one-time accidental damage coverage for the lens and that was replaced in no time. Then I got some water into the earpiece and it corroded the paint off the temple. No problem for Ulla - they offered me a full credit back for the lens and the frame for another pair of glasses even though I had already used these glasses for close to a year! I now have a pair of custom Tom Davies Bespoke frames that feel great, look great, and are unique from everything else out there. The measurements were tailored for my face so the only adjustments needed were for the nosepieces. I also got the $50 "HD" lens upgrade which I was very hesitant doing but after having the "non-HD" version on the first pair, I can see that my peripheral vision is much clearer. If you're looking for a fun pair of glasses or sunglasses and enjoy supporting small business with staff focused on customer service - Ulla is your place! read more

I have purchased several frames here over the years. I came in today to reorder frames that had broken and have the lenses placed into another pair of glasses, that they had also sold me as identical frames. When the owner was replacing the lens she put her finger on the lens and I quietly replied that it was surprising to see, as I am in the food business and we always wear gloves. She immediately blew up at me said that I was 'disrespecting her' and would I please not shop there again. I am surprised that this is their policy. Boy! was she having a bad hair day and taking it out on her customers!! I certainly will not shop there again and recommend to others not to shop here either. read more

Ulla has a nice selection of trendy expensive frames from many of the top-shelf eyewear designers But staff are not well trained at selling lenses and don't have the best customer service. I bought SALT frames and lenses-and I liked the frames a lot. The glasses with lenses that they suggested came to approx $650. The frame finish showed wear within 4 months and the lenses had a lot of distortion and when I came back in to ask if there was problem with the lens I was told to get used to the new prescription (not a drastic adjustment from my old prescription). I never really got used to the distortion and had problems with overhead lights. When I went in to ask about getting my frames fixed/replaced - they helped me out - but it took a long time. Then I had the same problem again after a similar amount of time. The second time around - staff was slow to get back to me and suggest reparations. They suggested I go back to SALT directly. When I went into the store to inquire about progress getting replacement glasses they told me they hadn't been ordered and that they wouldn't offer a warranty on new frames. I went back to my eye doctor and bought lenses through him for awesome frames I got from MOSCOT and was told that Ulla had sold me polycarbonate lenses which were not appropriate for my prescription. As much as I would like to support a local business I can't recommend this. read more

I was about to walk in with my prescription in hand yesterday (2-15-15) when I heard the sales girl give about the WORST customer service I've ever seen to a couple. She outright YELLED at them for not making an appointment for what seems to be an issue with a pair of glasses they had just purchased. Really took me by surprise. The other customers in the store seemed uncomfortable and embarrassed. I don't think I want to give them my business. I paid TOP DOLLAR for glasses at Ulla. I ended up with horribly large frames (people made fun) after laying at least$100 extra for a special digital profile to get them just right. Nothing was ever made better. There were, contracts, contracts, and more.. Unless you have unending funds, go elsewhere. Wow what a rip off. read more
