We had just ordered some food next door and so on a whim we went into the gallery. I was warmly greeted by Rachel Ray and she proceeded to share her personal experience with a lifetime of art. We absolutely loved her story of ohana. We picked up a custom patch and some locally made peanut butter cookies. By far, U'i Gallery is my favorite gift store/gallery on the island! I never leave the store without purchasing some beautiful clothing and artwork. I would just like to make a formal complaint. This company as well as the owner and ohana are just full of aloha and need to stop making such beautiful clothing. I cant stop ordering from them and my pockets are almost empty. Eh at least I will look good wearing their lole with empty pockets. What an amazing shop! Owner Rachel Ray Au Hoon has put together a gorgeous collection of her art work and local crafts. There is something in here for almost everyone. From patinas to glasswork to Ni'ihau shell necklaces to mens/women's wear. Each item offered was carefully selected and crafted by local artisans. Owner Rachel was born in Moloka'i and is immersed in the Hawaiian culture. She is conversational / fluent in Hawaiian and can tell many mo'olelo (stories) about the products offered. We went into her shop when we were waiting for our food from Tin House next door. The items are nice, not great, but good. Same with the art. BUT, the sales people are AWFUL. NO ALOHA. We were considering buying a few things once we picked up our food and asked if they knew a place to eat our plate lunches. She snidely said, oh we dont want to tell you because you might be mad it is windy. The WAY she said it with an underlying "go F yourself" was shocking. We had been treated well up til we were at the doorway. NOT a good vibe. There's plenty of souvenir shops in Maui. Spend your money where you are treated right. Full disclosure, local here who drives by all the time but ive never been inside. I follow her on her socials, recognize her pieces on clothes people wear, on the walls in Bamboo Grill, recognize her out with her ohana in public, had one of her dresses gifted to me and today was my first time inside and I took my little one. It was an impromptu stop on our way from Target and Walmart and no regrets. She was so sweet to me and my little one and was speaking to her in olelo Hawaii and my little one just loved it. It was a reminder to me to brush up on my olelo Hawaii too especially since I need to teach it to my mini-me. Every corner of her gallery is filled with goodies from all shapes and sizes. I was a huge fan before but now I truly love her work. We will definitely be going back to shop for gifts and for myself as well. Whatever you do don't tell her she shares a named with Famed celebrity chef, Rachel Ray, who is actually a real sweet and welcoming celebrity, unlike this owner. I made the mistake of saying her name was shared with Rachel Ray on Food Network and she pulled a Mariah Carey and said she doesn't know who I was talking about and then said I offended her with this statement and only Americans say such things. I even apologized and said it was not my intention to offend her even though she offended me. She then said a bunch of things in Hawaiin and said her art was displayed in hotels locally and take a year to paint. Then walked away and said she was going to talk to one of her regular paying customers. This lady has really the worst customer service I have encountered in a long time and it is a shame because she will not do well with this personality type. Mahalo. read more

Genuinely one of the rudest people I have met in Hawaii. Me and five of my friends just came by to check out her store. I was already pretty nauseous due to the hot and humid heat outside, and sat down for a second on the floor to catch my breath, as I have an autoimmune disorder. My friends were shopping while i was resting. She, as the first time approaching me, said: "if you aren't going to shop, get OUT" in the most snarky tone i have ever heard in my life. She said "i was trying to be nice but you're testing my patience". I see that she has responded to other negative reviews, downplaying other people's experiences and am sure she will try to minimize mine as well. My friends and I immediately left, as i felt very uncomfortable to be treated this way. We were in the store for a total of five minutes. And as we were leaving, she had the audacity to yell at my other friend and say, "you have no respect, AC isn't free!!!" When we held the door for 10 seconds for our other friends to come out. Stay away from this store, she is so so rude and i would never want to support someone who cannot communicate in a mature and respectful way especially to a group of young girls. EDIT: this is extremely untrue. - i was feeling very unwell and sat down to catch my breath for a moment in the corner of the store not bothering a single person, and you did not ask me if anything was wrong. The elderly lady did not even look at me and i would have moved to the side if she needed to look at the products. The first time you interacted with me was when you told me to get out. We had the door open for a maximum of thirty seconds to hold the door for the rest of our group. Do not lie to your community and minimize customer experiences. You seem very unwelcome towards any type of tourist as I have seen i. The below one star reviews, so maybe you should express this unwelcome attitude outside of your shop. read more

My boyfriend and I had just landed in Maui and took an Uber with all of our luggage to Ui Gallery to kill time, while we were outside the door getting our luggage situated, the owner walked out and told us to move out of the way of her store stating "this is not a good spot for your luggage especially since you aren't a customer of mine"??? She assumed we were not customers and that comment immediately turned us away so we went next door to Tin Roof and enjoyed ourselves there. I hope this owner is not this rude to all tourists. The staff was knowledgeable and helpful and so pleasant to talk to about the artist and her vision. I bought a tank top and wore it a few days later, it fit so nicely that I came back and bought another one in a different design as we as a dress and my husband bought swim trunks. We were able to talk to Rachel for quit's some time, she was so excited about her art and culture. Our visit to this unexpected Gallery was well worth the second trip. I cannot speak more highly of Rachael Ray and the U'i Gallery. The window displays caught my eye as I was eating at a nearby restaurant. I needed the leggings with the Ti Leaf print and if I could figure out how to get the arm chair in a similarly inspired print, I would have taken that too. But then you walk inside and are greeted by Rachael, who has to be the friendliest, most upbeat person I met on my entire trip. Wishing she had a shop on Oahu. This store is honestly my favorite retail store on Maui and maybe out of all the islands. I have to stop in each time I land on Maui to visit family. My only suggestion is to paint more as I own something in almost all of her prints from cutting boards to cell phone holders to bikinis to dresses and skirts. While we waited for our food, we happened to see the shop and went in. We are so glad we did! This place is a gem. To be clear - we ARE tourists from California but the owner (Rachel) was super friendly and went out of her way to show us some of her art and even discuss some of her inspiration with my daughter. We could not find the rash guard my daughter wanted on the rack but we bought a few great items and the owner threw in a small free gift for my daughter as well. In my visits to the gallery, I have repetitively witnessed this team greet tourists, and locals alike, with genuine aloha as they share the passion for the art displayed without being pushy sales people. I find it interesting and uplifting to learn about the artists inspirations for their pieces! I've had some "chicken skin" (goose bump :)) moments in this U`i gallery as I've connected with some special art pieces without any "pressure" from the artist or manager, (Sorry, for some reason, google won't accept my spelling of her Hawaiian name which is very unfortunate because she is a gem!). Because my shopping experience was not rushed or heavily steered, the art I eventually purchased for my own home, as well as my daughter's, hold personal meaningful connections. Those emotional connections to the art is a recurring experience as I enjoy it. My most recent purchase was a skirt of one of my favorite Rachael Rae's creations, the ti leaf. I was pleasantly surprised on the excellent workmanship on this garment. Of course the art is beautiful, but the fall of the fabric, fit of the design, matching of the seams and stitching...very well constructed. Rachael Ray puts her artwork on the widest variety of products I've seen in a gallery, so there's something for everyone, and many opportunities for enjoying her vibrant colors. This gallery has a lot of Aloha! I really wanted to take something from Hawaii back to NY with me, but I really wanted something meaningful that was made in Hawaii, so U'i Gallery is the perfect place! In addition to the artwork, they carry greeting cards, phone cases, mousepads, tahitian pearl jewelry, koa wood bowls and beautiful placemats with hibiscus and flowers that remind me of Maui. What I really like about the artwork, is that the artist, Rachael Ray, has her artwork available in different sizes and they offer matted prints and canvas wraps. Luckily, I was able to meet Rachael and she even helped me pick the artwork that would look best in the room that I wanted to decorate, based on my color scheme.
