Going to Ugly Duck seemed like a good way to save some money on our huge project - remodeling; virtually gutting the entire home. We ordered 16 interior doors and one exterior door. First, I never received a printed out invoice. I have looked in all my files and don't know how I missed asking for one except that I was busy coordinating work and scheduling contractors so didn't follow-up. Second, the interior door jams were not paint ready like we had asked for but since I could not find the invoice to double check what they had written down and was busy with other things, I let it go. I decided it wasn't as big-a-deal. Lastly and the reason for this review is the oversized exterior door with glass panels that we purchased for over $1000 (by memory because again - NO INVOICE with the price). We had it stained and installed. Right away it didn't seem to fit right but since we had already spent the time/money, we tried to make it fit. It just got worse with time. I had three different contractors come out to try to fix it when finally someone put a level on the door itself and said that the door is not level or warped and suggested I call Ugly Duck. He also told me that his company don't even buy from Ugly Duck anymore because of quality issues. Since we paid so much for the door, it shouldn't be failing after 2.5-3 years. I called and was called back and told that they wouldn't stand behind it because there is a One Year Warranty - again - no paperwork with our purchase. I was asked if I wanted to buy another door!?!?!?!?!?!? Are you kidding me? $1200 into a stained/installed door that shouldn't fail in 3 years and I am asked if I want to purchase another door? I went to buy a door today and the salesman Pavlov I was working with managed to negate me for over 1/2 hr. Came back to his desk and was conversing with a gentleman standing behind him at his desk. This went on for another 15 min with them talking in russian and pavlov sharing his computer screen with laughter and chuckles. Could have been looking at porn for all I know. Same door with sidelights at Home Depot is $600 less, and at Home Depot it comes fully assembled either brick old and trim. I'm a contractor, the two doors my customers received were in three pieces, we had to finish building them. The manager there is very rude to my customer as well. Would NEVER buy from this place. I found a beautiful door in their warehouse, yet it was too tall. Shaun assured me they had 2 in stock. They searched over the weekend and found the right size door in their warehouse of 1000's of doors. They hung it and called me for pickup 2 weeks earlier than expected. I needed a door in a hurry that was not typically on the shelves anywhere, and Sean from the Ugly Duck came to the rescue. As a designer, I understand timing and that sometimes you have to just wait. But I didn't have to. Sean found a solution with a door they had on the floor, and I had it in about a week. He treated my tiny order like I was a very important customer. Know what you want, be patient and show some respect, and you will leave a satisfied customer. Don't get you feelings hurt if they don't remember you from on time to the next. These guys see dozens of people a day, and most are wearing a mask. I purchased an entry door for my home. I brought in my existing door to transfer the measurements. All holes were drilled correctly to the right size, the hinge areas were routered out, the door was sanded, cleaned, and stain ready when I picked it up. I was very picky but he was patient with me and made sure I left happy and with what I wanted. The crew at ugly duck sanded it and cut it to fit my measurements. I can't remember the name of the gentleman who took the initiative to san sand it for me, but he did it anyways and made it look brand new. I couldn't be happier with my new front door. They ripped me off pretty badly nearly 3 years ago when I was remodeling a rental for someone, I wanted to see what they would quote me for a brand new exterior six panel door standard size for a new construction home, they quoted me 295 not including tax for the exact same 170 dollar door at Lowe's, steel, six panel, exact measurements, which only tells me that if they smell a chance to gouge they most definitely will, not a store I'd recommend to the community especially if you are trying to save money. read more

Update: Have tried to pick up door 4 times now and still no door. It's now February 18th. Unbelievable! Please save yourself some time and money and go anywhere else. Horrible service and extremely slow. We ordered a door on January 21st and still have not received it as of February 4th. It was a simple, hollow door for a rental unit. They claim that it has taken so long since the order name didn't match the credit card name. The card is under our business name and you would think they would have called the phone number on the order to straighten it out and offered some sort of partial refund to make it right for taking two weeks to complete an order that should have taken several hours. Bought our new front door, great price and very happy with it. I think people forget this is a company that sells a product at fair and discounted prices. YOU need to have a good idea of what you're looking for, and not expect a salesperson to walk you around and show you everything. Sure, the customer service could be better, but personally I prefer NOT being attacked by a salesperson as soon as I walk in, and I think most people with understanding of construction feel the same. If you need more help, I'm sure if you call ahead of time and let them know you're coming with a bunch of questions they will be glad to help (but I've never tried). read more

Incompetent, Frustrating, Blames Others for Own Mistakes Needed to replace an interior door that's a bit short of standard height. Called The Ugly Duckling Warehouse and was put in touch with Bill, discussed with him that I needed a door of a CUSTOM height and gave him the measurements. Bill told me that they had doors in stock that could be cut down to the height I needed, and he took the order over the phone and said he would call me back that afternoon with my total price and take my credit card info. Two days later, Bill still hadn't called. I called him again, he couldn't remember having talked with me, but finally found the order, and I gave him credit card info. He said the door would be ready in 2 days. Then he called back to say, "Bad news, your door is going to take 8-10 days." I told him that was too long to wait and asked him to refund my credit card. He said he would, but then called back 5 minutes later to say they could have my door ready the next day (Friday). On Friday, I drove 90 miles to pick up my door, but there was no door waiting for me. They couldn't even find my order. Finally someone other than Bill located my order, which had never been turned in to the shop, and I was asked to return several hours later. Remember that I'm 90 miles from home at this point. Finally I got home with my door, took it into my workshop and stained it. Then I brought it into the house, and surprise, it was a standard height that had NOT been cut down. Called Bill yet again, and WOW! He said there was nothing in his notes about cutting the door down. In his mind, there could be no explanation for his lack of notes/measurements other than that I had kept that detail a secret when placing my order with him. I pointed out that since I could have bought a STANDARD height door at my local Home Depot, it would have made NO sense for me to call up a business 90 miles from my home and order a door sight unseen. Bill then became positive that he had never even SPOKEN to me about that door, even though we'd had far too many phone calls for my taste. He refused to take any responsibility for the error, and told me my only recourse was to bring the door back to them and they would cut it down, a 180-mile round trip. He presented that option as if he were doing me some kind of favor. Since I already know from experience that they'd probably find a way to screw that up, too, I declined that offer. Now I have to figure out how to cut the thing down myself. To recap: I measured my door's rough opening, determined that I needed a custom door, and then found a business that does custom doors that was 90 miles away from my home. I called The Ugly Duck Warehouse and placed my order for a custom-length door with Bill, verbally over the phone. Naturally, I provided Bill with the measurements of the rough opening so they could make me a CUSTOM-length door. Bill failed to write down the details, then failed to turn in the order, then failed to take ANY responsibility for screwing things up. Bill's version of this story is that I called him up and ordered a standard door (which I could have bought locally), and then drove 90 miles to pick it up (instead of the 10 miles I could have driven for a standard door). I guess he's also pretty sure I that I called him up this morning and lied to him about the door not fitting. To Bill, that scenario seems more plausible that the possibility that he messed up the order from the get-go and isn't real good at what he does. These guys have prices that look good, but do yourself a favor and deal with someone professional, someone who can do better than a 3.4 average on their Google reviews. If you appreciate intelligence, competence, and decent customer service, I do not recommend The Ugly Duck Warehouse. read more

The store is so unorganized/unprofessional I can't even believe it. The owner Jason is extremely rude and aggressive (I've seen him cuss out numerous employees and customers). Absolutely horrible upper management. I've wasted hours waiting around and looking for help because no one knows how to do their job or find anything. I have spent so much money at this store just to drive it back because the product was damaged or the order wasn't fulfilled properly. He walked us through the options after carefully listening to what our desires were. He walked us through several warehouses to show us different door styles and type of wood. There is an attitude problem at this company that starts from the owner Nancy. It showed up while we were working with our very nice salesman Joe. After spending over an hour with Joe, we had French doors picked out, but they did not have the ones we wanted in stock. From behind her desk, Nancy belches out, "Those door will be six weeks." Which reads innocently enough except the amazingly bitchy attitude that came with it. So my wife and I got up and walked out. The general manager and Joe come running out as we are pulling away and tell us they can make them. They show me around and what they have. We agree and order the doors. At this point we thought Nancy was just some bitch that works there, did not know she was the owner. We would have left. We had the doors assembled and the process did not go very well. There was an error making the doors that resulted in them being out of square. I had rented a trailer, picked up doors and had contractor try to install. When I showed up to speak to a manager about what to do, I get an accusatory response from Nancy that we had installed the doors incorrectly. I had pictures of measurements where they don't match. She told me I am reading the tape measure wrong. She said we can't do anything unless you bring the doors back to the store. So I rent a truck, hire help, bring the door in. Nancy told me there would be no arguing, or discussion, either the doors are correct, or they will fix them. We brought in the doors to the back where the door shop is, and she specifically kicked us out and told us to go wait outside. They would look at the doors and get back to us. After 45 minutes goes by, we sneak a peak inside and see the doors all taken apart. So we now go into the store to wait because it is freezing outside, and we had heard nothing. Then a little while later she comes by and says it will be 15 more minutes. Nancy then let's us know the doors are done. I asked if they had made a mistake. She said we just decided to replace the frame. After we had the door loaded and Nancy returned to the store, the door shop crew member came to me an apologized and owned up to their mistake. Showed me what it was that was done wrong, gave me the piece with the error on it, and now the doors are straight. I have no problem with the staff. They made a mistake and corrected it. Owned up to it as well. The owner Nancy, simply did not. If you are hiring, and see on the application that they formerly worked for the Ugly Duck. Please hire them. The staffs attitude was excellent. My salesman Joe, he told me he now no longer works for them. He was not happy with the way they treat customers. Someone needs to hire Joe. I told him, call me where ever you work next and you will be my salesman. I will bring my business there, what ever it is. So which one is Nancy, don't confuse her with Linda. There is another lady that works there that sits near the cashier who is very nice. Nancy is the lady with the unpleasant look on her face that sits to the left as you enter the store. Don't confuse her with being an employee like we did. Every store has the occasional bad employee, but it is rare that the bitchy employee is the actual owner. I would recommend not doing business with The Ugly Duck. As much as I liked the staff, ownership sucks. That's who makes the money. Please hire their staff. People who work for people who suck, and still give good customer service deserve better. read more

Purchased $3,300 in kitchen cabinets. These cabinets were supposedly all plywood boxes with doors and faces and didn't discover until after they were shipped that they are MDF and they are actually not boxes they are plywood on the sides with 1/4" plywood with braces on the back (extremely low quality and cost the same as cabinets at lowes). Buyer beware the owner and or sales people don't seem to care either. read more

The owner does Not care if he sales damaged unusable goods to people. I thought I was getting a good deal on a bathroom vanity but when I got the Item home and opened the box it was far from what the display looked like. It was so warped it could not be put together among other things like the box smelled like mold, and the wood was splitting apart. I brought it to the owner's attention and he said no exchanges or refunds..... What the?? This is how they at The Ugly Duck treat people. When I went to The Ugly Duck, the first thing I told them was I needed items that were in stock or at least at a local warehouse to be available within a couple of days. I completely understand that items are messed up because of the shortage of items in the world and that is why I said this upfront. Within a week we got a call that our entire order was ready, doors, trim, shiplap, and casings. I showed up with a friends trailer I needed to borrow because of the length of the boards, only to be told they only had the shiplap and the doors. Another 10 days goes by and get a call to say the trim and casings were ready, I took off work early again but this time needed to rent a trailer. Must to my dismay, when I got there, I was told only the casings had arrived, not the trim. Don't believe anything they say about stock coming or being in a local warehouse, this stuff is clearly not here, and then to be called twice and have my time wasted was just an terrible experience. read more

WHY DIDN'T I READ THESE REVIEWS FIRST?? We needed a new front door, and thought of this store. We arrived at a selection, and I brought my old (heavy) door to them to make sure it was cut correcty. I spend the next several weeks finishing and making everything perfect, then discovered that they evidently did not cut the width properly (not sure if it was trimmed at all). It was about 1/4 inch too large. Rather than call them, I wanted to have the serious conversation about how they could make this right. The "blonde lady" sat at her desk and refused to either send someone out to measure and take back the new door for proper trimming, or bring both doors back to the shop for trimming. She insisted that their insurance will not allow them to visit onsite. I told her the reason I didn't purchase a door at Lowes was my assumption that (being a custom door shop) I would get better service after the sale. Even Lowes has contractors on call to do installs and service. Blonde lady did not seem to be concerned about the image or reputation of the store. My main issue is that they refused to alter their policy in order to correct a problem they created. They were willing to trim the door, IF I brought both doors back (again). Because of the weight of both doors, this really is not an option. If you order or purchase a door from these people, MAKE SURE THEY TRIMMED IT RIGHT, before you leave the store. Terrible experience, I bought some creme colored cabinets, had them assembled by ugly duck because that was their big sales pitch, that the professional assembly would be best due to the cabinets we bought, when we got the cabinets home they were a yellow instead of creme, I contacted the salesman he stated the only reason he was showing me the creme colored ones was because of how they were assembled. Not that those were the ones I was buying. Yellow doesn't match our decor. Went to install them in the house because they wouldn't give us the one we wanted and four of the doors fell off after their professional assemblers stripped out the holes. I called and talked to the owner to see about having them fixed and her words were, "put some wood glue and toothpicks in the hole and re assemble the doors." I stated I wanted things to be made right which was followed by, "our only responsibility is fixing the problem." How that is them fixing the problem I don't know. Also the doors on the cabinets that weren't stripped out were so far out of square that they can't be adjusted enough with the hardware to make them look decent. I went to the Ugly Duck yesterday for a hollow door(not pre hung) but drilled. Nothing special needed. Upon asking a very kind gentlemen (new hire) tried to assist me and was not able to. Quinton came to assist. I explained what I was looking for. He stated he could get me a used door with defects for $60. I explained there must be a mistake as a friend of mine bought a door for $10. Quinton rudely stated not here. I explained that a new hollow door that was not pre hung but drilled was $32.00 at Lowes brand new. Quinton rudely told me you should take that avenue, sometimes that just the way things work out. I was shocked, first by his rudeness and secondly by the fact that they have "hundreds of doors" but want to sell them for more than the cost of a new door. During one of my calls to the Ugly Duck to ask a few questions I was told by Quinton that they work of commission so please ask for him upon my arrival. I now understand the pricing although not the rudeness. My advice, look elsewhere Brown Building Materials has very nice helpful staff and reasonable prices. read more

We bought kitchen cabinets from Ugly Duck, and paid to have them assemble them. The salesman was very helpful and professional. Once we installed the cabinets, there were two of them on which the doors were uneven. We went back to the store to find out how to fix the problem, and they showed us how to adjust them by loosening or tightening the adjusting screws. When we tried to do it once we got back home, we found that the screws were so tight that the heads stripped when we tried to loosen them. We drove back to the store again and they gave us new hardware. After unsuccessfully trying to change them ourselves, my husband went back the next day and convinced one of the employees who assembles the cabinets to come to our house and change them, which we felt was reasonable after all the trips we had to make, plus the fact that it was their fault that the hardware was installed incorrectly to begin with. Had that been the only issue, I wouldn't be writing this review. One of the drawers recently began sticking, and not closing completely. We took it down to the store today to find out how to fix it. Nancy, who I believe is the owner, looked at it and said that the drawer had been pounded on. I told her that we did not pound on the drawer, and that they had assembled it. She then said to my husband, "oh, I remember, we sent someone to your house to fix your cabinets", and he said yes, you did. Then she took the drawer to the back area and after several minutes, she came back and said that they were going to put some different screws in it and showed us the screws that they were replacing. She pointed to the screws and said to my husband, "see these screws? They're the wrong kind". I said, well, we didn't put it together, someone here did. I said, "honestly, I think that whoever assembled our cabinets, must have been new or something, and didn't do it correctly." She stated that everyone who works there does good work. The entire time I was talking to her, she never looked at me, but looked at and spoke to my husband. Her entire manner implied that we were at fault and that we were responsible for the hammer marks on the back of the drawer and the wrong screws being used. We won't go back, but I have a feeling that Nancy won't care. read more

We purchased a front door from Ugly Duck recently. The salesman was friendly and helpful while we were there, but after we took receipt of the door he dismissed our concerns. After we purchased the door, my husband took our old door in to be matched (hinge and hardware openings etc.), which they committed to as part of the sale. He then carefully stained and coated the door with urethane. Once we brought the door in to hang, he realized they hadn't mortised in the inset for the plates on the handle. When he called our salesperson (Bill I.), Bill said that isn't something they do (aren't set up for it.... though they were able to inset the hinges). When my husband explained that he had damaged the new $180 knob set and door frame, Bill said it was too bad, but not their problem and we should have just chiseled it out. Had we KNOWN, we would have been prepared to do the extra work, but his commitment when we purchased the door was that they make it fit exactly like your existing door. He had failed to tell us, but apparently didn't take responsibility for that. My husband told him we'd be leaving a bad review and he said he didn't care, and hung up on him. We have recently purchased a lot of items from The Ugly Duck and have had nothing but issues and problems with them. Knowing right off the bat this place is a discount house of various building materials, some things mis-matched, others are damaged and so on, we made major allowances for such things. The prices seemed fair but the frustration and constant managing of the process on our part was not worth the price. In the other review someone commented on the blond lady being rude. We initially thought the same thing, gave her some lead-way and things started out fine. After we started having issues with their delivery dates and broken delivery date after broken delivery date she has become a pain in the ass to deal with. She could care less if you buy from the business or even if you come back. They know there is another sucker looking for a deal and they just move onto the next person. If you are looking for cheap you will find it but in the end you might really regret your decision to work with them. They seem to do well with people who do not know building materials or who are looking for the cheapest solution. If you are looking for quality stuff, you might but you spend hours digging and moving items yourself. This is not about customer service by any stretch of the imagination. There is a reason they have 1,000s of doors...people get frustrated with dealing with this company. read more

I purchased a total of 31 Mahogany doors from the Ugly Duck along with thousands of feet of trim so you would thank they would want to take care of you. WRONG!! The last batch of 7 doors to finish my project where purchased 4 weeks ago. I had to look through many doors in their warehouse to find ones that where half way straight. Note:( They do not keep their doors properly stacked in storage buildings that leak and have excessive humidity). I brought them home and my contractor was not impressed. I called they said to bring them back and I would have to pay $25.00 per door which I reluctantly agreed to as I needed these doors as they matched the rest in the house. When I arrived the owner a older blonde lady asked to have the doors looked at before returning them. She came back after a few minutes and informed me that all the doors where warped and she was going to charge me $75.00 a door to return them. After much deliberation and frustration I went in to talk to the blond lady. I said to her that she had me over a barrel and that I did not have much choice. She proceeded to look behind me and I quote, "What I don't see any barrel behind you and then laughed out loud." I bit my tounge as I needed the doors. After paying I went down to there warehouse to pick out doors. Note I took a 6' level to be sure the doors where not warped. Three workers proceeded to hand down door after door for me to check. Either they where split, warped water stained or all the above. It took me an hour just to find 7 doors to that I felt would be acceptable. After loading the doors the owner walked up to me and started chewing me out for taking three of her workers away from her and that I had no right. I informed her that they had been helping me find some doors that would work. Her response and I quote," You should have taken the first 6 doors and called it good." At which I informed her that many of the doors are damaged and not usable to which she scoffed at me and said that I was being to picky.
