A wonderfully curated exhibit showcasing the lengthy history of baseball in Sacramento with a special focus on the AAA Rivercats and how they came to be. It was so fun to see the memorabilia and read the stories. The museum had other items on exhibit showcasing mining history and stories of the early settlers to the region. Inside it is an Art Gallery, and also a multipurpose activity/community space. Through the front door, which is located at the corner of 1st and E streets past some large art sculptures, is a book store of published art books, and to the left corner is a info/cashier counter and person. Past that opens up to a large multistory atrium area, filled with art, but also a couple of tables with 4-5 chairs each. In the hot Davis summers, this is a cool place to hang out, literally, as there is OPAC available for you (Other People's AC), and WiFi! Currently the artist featured on this floor is Mark Bullwinkle, an American artist with SF Bay Area roots and metal quirky sculpture installations, particularly in Emeryville and Berkeley, that he created with a blowtorch. Up the stairs or elevator to floor 2, there is a study/lounge that over looks the atrium below, with other artists' work in the nooks and crannies around the staircase and little rooms. The 3rd floor is a full art floor, with mostly ceramic sculptures from various artists. It is free to enter. I did an event here a year ago, a UC Davis student's birthday party with entertainment in the atrium space. The museum itself is always free and is supported by donations. It's a excellent place to learn about history through the lens on archaeological finds from the Middle East. Even if you're not a religious or faith-focused person, this is history made LIVE through artifacts discovered through archeological digs by professionals and most of them are the original pieces and only a handful are replicas so if you think about it, these are truly incredible finds to behold. Definitely come check this museum out! They're open limited hours but includes Saturday and Sunday afternoons from 1-4 PM so those are good hours for working folks with kids who are in school during the week too. I had the Capay Cuban sandwich which was delicious. They had homemade dill pickles on it. I had their hand cut French fries that had miso aioli and jalapeño ranch that had just a little kick. They didn't have a large selection to choose from but everything looked yummy. There is a bar there and had specialty drinks available. They have a little marketplace where they sell dried flower arrangements as well as gift sets of their vinegar, oils,soaps, jams, nuts and honey. Well fear not, intrepid medical history lovers, here it is, brought to you by the Sierra Sacramento Valley Medical Society. They are open 10 am to 4 pm Tuesday through Friday, so I came by on a rare day off that I had taken because I was hosting my Swedish friend for two weeks. My Swedish friend with an advanced degree in osteo-paleontology, mind you. So, though the self-guided tour is what we chose, I did have a tour guide of a sort. And it was awesome. You can also email or call them to set up a guided or school tour, if that is preferred. The museum is much bigger than I thought based on the few photos I looked at before my visit. There is also a small office area inside with people available should you need assistance. We took an hour and a half to explore the place. There are some things that can't be unseen, so this tour might be a challenge for squeamish people. I didn't mind stuff in jars, but I'm always good on pictures of maggots going to town in a wound. There's a reason I didn't study medicine! I had never seen a lotus shoe before, either. It was so unbelievably small. My heart clenched in my chest. I hope she is happy and at peace now, wherever she is. To lighten the mood, the many uses for bedpans as decorative pieces brought us delight throughout our wanderings of the museum. It would have been fun to show my partner the exhibit on the history of overly-familiar gynecological tools, but alas he was stuck at work! Getting to see 3,000 year old statues depicting patients going through various mental and physical symptoms was a highlight of my visit. For as long as there have been humans, there have been other humans trying to make them feel better. Of course, there have also been quacks. There were several examples of quackery to look at as well. They even have library books one can read at their leisure at a table and chairs. Most books you can't touch, but some you are invited to. I especially liked reading about what medical accomplishments CSUS students have made over the years, as an alumnus myself. You can easily walk or ride the bus from campus to the museum to look at resources if you wanted, and that is really cool. So I could keep yammering about how cool it was to visit this local gem of a museum, but instead I think I'll let you check it out for yourself. They have a small lot with free parking and restrooms for the public. There's even a real iron lung! Vaccinations aren't only fun, kids, they're fundamental. Again, it is free to visit!
