Their plants are amazing. I love nasturtiums and they had some transplants with different options. I bought 3-4 small ones. I've grown them before so I know what I'll be expecting. Also bought veggies and a hibiscus. Everyone was so helpful and eager to answer questions. They also helped me to my car. It's not cheap but it's worth every penny I spent. Why have I never been to Redwood Barn Nursery before? We finally refurbished our raised bed garden and decided to plant some vegies. We picked up some tomatoes and squashes from Davis Ace but had room for more. Davis Ace didn't have a great selection, so we headed to Redwood Barn. We should have started there. They had a large selection of assorted vegetables, melons, herbs and other seedlings. We've got to come back to check out the garden and house plants. As we went inside to pay, a customer was getting assistance with their sickly houseplant. What a wonderful service. read more

I really love this place. It's not large, but they got a great selection. Most importantly, they have fantastic customer service. I've had some struggling plants and they were able to pin down the exact cause and help me to address it. Further, they've been really great about advising me on the right plans to be planting and new home. Yes we're going to pay a little bit more but I think it's worth it. Looking for a house plant! Go upstairs! They've got so much up there. Probably the only thing I wouldn't buy there are the pots. Those are generally a bit overpriced. But everything else is within reason given that it's a small business. Highly recommend! read more

I recently began gardening and this was the first nursery I purchased from. The variety of plants makes me want to go weekly! They had some succulents (aeoniums) Ive been interested in purchasing but usually I try to refrain from buying online so Im glad I was able to find them here. They have a california native selection, succulent area, fruit trees, and even some indoor plants inside. The prices are decent, I was able to purchase. Nuccios Camellia, 2 QT for 15$ (talk about steal! I also found a blue torch cactus, cactus, and purchased seeds. They seeds germinated and the plants are doing great. It's a smaller nursery but the selection is large. Both times Ive gone the workers are working on propagation and bringing in new product. They made sure to see if I was finding everything okay, which was nice considering I take awhile to shop. Usually, Im looking up the name as I go since I'm not an expert with scientific names quite yet! I'll continue to come here and definitely recommend to anyone in the area. read more

Was up in Davis and always game to check out a local garden center. Redwood Barn Nursery has a healthy selection of flowering plants, vegetables, cactus and indoor plants. Everything looked so colorful and well kept. It's a smaller space but that means everything is well curated and taken care of. The barn itself is a cute photo op. There are some unique pottery and garden ornaments as well. While I didn't purchase anything. I was eyeing some beautiful lavender plants. Stopped by this cute little nursery for our quick weekend business trip. I'm always looking for new and different plants and plant shopping always makes me happy. I was happy to find some plants that weren't normally found within my area i.e. I bought some Thai chili plants for myself and my sisters as a souvenir. They also had a decent selection of indoor house plants and bought a few pilea plants for myself. They also have a decent selection of different succulents and cacti. The houseplant collection varies, monsteras, pothos and stuff are generally in good condition but the calathea upstairs seem to go bad quickly or must come in in not so great condition here Staff are really friendly! Prices are average - on the higher end - typical of a davis business! They occasionally get unusual bits from the conservatory in Davis which makes it very worth stopping in occasionally. read more

I always have the best experience here. The location is so cute and the employees really know their stuff. They have a decently sized selection of both indoor and outdoor plants with an emphasis on natives! Inside, they have two stories of indoor plants. All are in excellent condition and beautiful shape. It makes for a very peaceful outing. That last time I went, they actually didn't have the plant I was looking for so they gave me the address of another nursery before I even asked! Such good customer service. Very warm, friendly, and welcoming. They help plant owners of all experiences. Such a local gem. They even have the cutest little outdoor decor. We've frequented RWB (as my son calls it) on a near weekly basis at times and the service and advice is unparalleled. The staff are helpful and can provide the necessities of plant care. The owner, Don Shor, is a font of knowledge. Not only will he give you information on any given plant but can go many levels higher if you're interested in plant taxonomy, genetics, cultivars, and history. Really great nursery! Very reasonably priced plants and a very cute barn. They carry a wide variety of plants, including a very big succulent collection and sometimes carry harder to find plants such as calatheas. The plants look very healthy and well taken care of and it is evident that the employees here do a great job caring for the different needs of each plant. I bought a monsters deliciosa (bit bigger than a seedling) and it has a ton of new growth and will need to be reported soon. The plants are great but one of the best parts of redwood barn nursery is the staff. They are extremely friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable about any plants you may have questions about. Redwood Barn Nursery was recommended by a coworker because I was looking for a place I could find some cacti. My 15 year wedding anniversary is coming up and for some reason my husband wanted a cactus for every year ‍. Odd request but I was on a mission to make it happen and Redwood Barn delivered. I showed up and was greeted immediately. I explained to woman what I was looking for and she showed me immediately to the cacti she had available. While I considered my options, she mentioned they had just gotten some new bowls in and asked if I wanted her to make an arrangement so that I didn't have to risk injury planting them myself . I said absolutely and she helped me pick out the cacti to plant in the bowl. She took off with my items and immediately got to work. What she came up with was wonderful and a perfect gift to give to my husband. She was able to plant 9 so I grabbed 6 additional loose cacti for him to plant himself and I was all set. The price for everything was more reasonable than I was expecting and the service was hands down better than most businesses I go into these days. I can't wait to gift these beautiful plants and look forward to future visits to Redwood Barn for all my future plant needs. POC are not welcomed. I have been here twice. The first time I came I was accompanied by my sister. We were walking around and talking about how beautiful everything was. No one ever came to greet us or ask if we needed assistance. We were there about 25 minutes until we got tired of waiting and left. The second time was last week and I went by myself. I was the only one there and there was a man sitting in the entrance of the barn. He didn't greet me so I thought he might be a customer. I walked around looking for the plants I needed. About 15 minutes after I had been there a white couple showed up and immediately were greeted by the same man that had been staring at me. He was very welcoming and helpful to the couple. I on the other hand was still not greeted or asked if u needed assistance. I purposely walked by them 4 separate times and still nothing. The person assisting them went about his business after. Worst experience ever. DO NOT come here if you are a POC!!! read more

Such a gem in Davis! I have been meaning to leave a review for this plant nursery ever since moving to Davis in July 2020. I love the variety of plants here and Redwood offers rare and unique plants that I've never seen or heard of at other nurseries. The pricing is fair, and the customer service is excellent. Before purchasing my "lipstick" succulents I was given a run down of how to care for them by a friendly staff member. I am no plant lady and lack a green thumb entirely--the staff however gave me the confidence to purchase plants for my patio! The location itself is very beautiful like a little slice of forest! (;. They have a great selection but the young guy at the register was pretty rude and unhelpful. I brought my baby with me to get some vegetables starts and I asked for a specific type and he couldn't even bother to look up and let me know where they were at. Had my hands full so I thought asking would be easier. He just said "yep, they're with the vegetable starts in the back". Um okay, that narrows it down, thanks. I got what I needed but I definitely won't go back. I want to support local but I'll find another place to do so that will be helpful and nice. read more

A woman that worked there was so kind and patient, asking her questions to make sure she got the perfect plant. We ended up with a pickle plant and a ruby necklace! Five years ago, two very helpful employees assisted me in selecting plants and decorative pottery. Just a few weeks ago, a young man and a lady who happened to be within earshot gave knowledgeable advice for plants and a large pot. Today, an older man made absurdly insulting remarks in response to my questions about how to handle holes on the leaves of recently purchased plants. Having had time to reflect on the experience, I believe he harbored a strong animus towards my presumed ethnicity. He was insulting and dismissive. I agree with B.G. that POC are not welcome here. I was planning to order a tree at the end of summer but have decided to search elsewhere. We are sorry that this will have to be an exception to our usual policy of supporting local businesses, especially those that are family owned. If you are a person of color, take the trouble of driving to Sacramento where your business is welcome. I suggest that the owner, if it wasn't he who was working there today behind a large desk and computer, take the trouble to screen applicants before hiring. read more

I've been impressed with this store ever since it opened. And that was at least 30 years ago. While the staff has changed over the years, the owner Don Shor remains involved with a hands-on presence. He used to sit in an office upstairs and let the staff run the store most of the time. But in the past maybe 10 years he has moved his office downstairs (to the back corner) so he is available for consultation or question by any of the staff or customers at any time. Don shares his expertise through his website (RedwoodBarn.com), his monthly articles in the local newspaper (http://redwoodbarn.com/articleindex.htm), and his radio show on KDRT -- the Davis Garden Show each Thursday at noon on KDRT.org . Mixed experience. I've purchased many plants over the years that I've lived in Davis. Their plants are excellent quality--top shelf, for sure. On earlier visits, years ago, customer service was good. Friendly staff was helpful and present in the yard. Recently, my staff experience has gone dramatically downhill. As I've wandered the yard, pacing for a half hour or more, either no staff is even outside (instead staying behind the counter) or, when they are outside, they have not even acknowledged my presence much less asked to assist me. When I've asked for specific plants, I've simply been told they don't have it. In the past, the staff was always helpful in ordering what I was looking for. I'm not sure what has changed in terms of the way the nursery is staffing, but the experience of shopping at this nursery is no longer fun and most often I walk out with nothing but disappointment. Though I prefer supporting small, local businesses, I think I'll do my shopping at ACE or drive into Sac for my nursery shopping in the future. The staff doesn't seem to want my business anyway. read more

This place a really nice place to get your plants! My friend I were trying to make our first terrariums and we didn't really know much other than watching YouTube videos to see how. We came to this place with a jar and no knowledge of how exactly to make it. The people who work there really know their stuff. They suggested what to add to the jar, and suggested the different kinds of plants that we should buy based on the location of our house that we were going to put them in. We ended up getting charcoal, potting soil, then bought some rocks from Ace nearby. I love my terrarium and everything costed exactly the same price as the jar, which in my opinion is a great deal. Although, the charcoal and the potting soil could be bought for cheaper at Ace, this mom and pop deserved the extra dollar! Thank you! And shout out to Maggie for helping us! read more

When I asked for suggestions the salesperson became very irritated and told me sarcastically that if I wanted a landscaper he could arrange it. On my afternoon bike ride, I was canvasing Davis for houseplants and homewares. It was nice to be outside as opposed to racing toward SF per my usual Friday afternoon schedule. Redwood Barn Nursery reminds me of the garden stores I used to frequent in Santa Cruz. It has a well maintained and nicely arrayed selection of veggies, herbs, organics, natives, and drought resistant plants outside. A variety of cacti, succulents, and ground covers also line the gravel paths that twist around the small yard. I tried not to get distracted outside and made my way inside to find the houseplants. They're tucked away upstairs and seem like an afterthought. The selection isn't great and compared to the vibrant healthy plants outside, I felt like I was in a grandma's dusty houseplant attic. The employees ranged from friendly to less than friendly when I was discussing what I was looking for. In the end, I took my business elsewhere, but I would consider returning for outdoor plants. read more

Meh. The young man sitting at the desk wasn't particularly friendly or helpful, and I wasn't impressed with their selection of plants or pottery. I saw multiple items I had purchased from Green Acres within the previous month, with a fairly significant markup at Redwood Barn. I find Green Acres in Sacramento to be a bit pricey, but their stellar customer service justifies the extra cost. I really like to support local business, and the owner of Redwood Barn seems very nice, but I won't be returning. read more
