We first got a 15' truck and that went well and after all of the furniture and boxes were moved, went back for a 9' van to move our plants and other remaining items - and we couldn't have been happier with the service and the equipment. I have been loaning my (ex) guy to have storage here for awhile. Every time we go, the wait at the counter is unreasonable. There are never more than two clerks on a weekend day, they can see a long line, yet they will have a tea party with each customer at the counter, discussing the pretty packaging tape that is not even being purchased, maddening! Today we brought 10 bags to add. They had moved his current storage to a different room number without his permission. Then they gave him the wrong new room number. As the cleaning lady was nicely trying to help (although she didn't speak English), my guy got impatient, handed me the key, and walked away. I had to leave the cart with all his stuff in the middle of the hallway and go to the counter. I was told the correct room number but they would not give me the code to get back in through the sliding doors, so I had to leave everything. My guy's fault ultimately but also U-haul's poor customer service. There needs to be MORE clerks, and customers should take a couple minutes NOT a half hour each! No wonder you only have a two-star rating. I own a divorce business with 100 active cases and have a five-star rating. Send your clerks to customer service school! read more

We had rented UBoxes and a truck twice as apart of our move. We faced several issues. The boxes were moved despite us requesting them not to be and were not going to be back in time. The truck wasn't there despite the reservation. The customer service via phone was slow and unhelpful. This would have been a 1 star review if it wasn't for 1 person: Jonathan. Jonathan gave us his personal contact information and said we could reach out to him any time for support. He helped us resolve almost all these issues immediately. He went out of his way to make our issues a priority and resolved everything. He was on our side the whole time and helped make the experience very positive end to end. Jonathan single hardly made our experience positive. He is smart and friendly and exemplifies excellent customer service. He should run the whole place. read more

I had such a mixed experience with this place that it's difficult to choose between two and three stars. I'm settling on two, because--well, you'll have to read the rest of the review to find out. As you probably know already, my flat was destroyed by a fire in 2023. My roommate and I lived in the Mission for a year-and-a-half, but our old place was rebuilt, so we were moving back to our old (new) place. We needed a U-Haul. I'll spare you most of the actual moving story, but my roommate deserves half of the credit for doing a lot of stuff, and my brother deserves the other half of the credit for doing a lot of stuff, including Tetrising our belongings perfectly so that the truck was big enough for all our stuff, with space to spare. My sister also deserves half the credit, but I'm already at 150 percent, and I don't want to figure out labor-of-love math. Buying boxes from here before our move was fine. They come in packs of twenty-five, but apparently, you can return unused boxes, so they must sell them individually as well. When we came early to buy boxes, I also booked my truck for a few days later. I soon realized that we needed the truck for longer, and they weren't open when I realized this, so I changed the appointment time online (without downloading the app). When we came in to pick up the truck, there was some confusion about my actual appointment time. Everything ended up just fine, but it was annoying that I changed something online that wasn't fully communicated to the physical place. Now, they needed the truck immediately upon our return (which was the next day), so we had to make sure to bring it back on time, which we eventually did. The neighborhood around the place, including the physical street itself, is shady. There's rubbish, debris, and pieces of asphalt all over the place. Probably even more annoying, when you look like you're even approaching the building during the day, a bunch of men ask you repeatedly if you need help. I get day laborers and don't begrudge them the difficulty of their work, but I've never felt as uncomfortable around a bunch of day laborers as I did those few times I walked up to this U-Haul and had to tell multiple people that we didn't need help. Realistically, once I've turned two people down, why would more even bother to ask me? But they did, not only when we rented the truck, but also when we returned it. My two-star rating comes down to this: The actual physical layout of this place is absolutely ridiculous. The trucks are stored in a parking lot up the hill, so you have to trudge up that steep driveway to claim your truck. Ours happened to be parked as far south as possible (the driveway is on the north side), up against the hill behind the lot. Unfortunately, its gate had been left wide open, and when we got the truck to our apartment, I noticed that there was mouse and rat feces all over the bed of the inside. We tried to clean the poop as best we could with a broom, but the grooves on the truck bed make rodent poop difficult to sweep. We ended up using some of the moving pads just to prevent our furniture and boxes from sitting on the poop. The truck itself was fine. It was old, but you can tell these things are built to take a beating, and I'm sure they do. I was a little bit shocked by just how much gas it took to drive a total of ten miles, and at first, I thought they had double-charged me for the rental itself, but when I went through all of it, including the furniture-pad rental and the mileage, everything was accurate. It's not the cheapest rental, but it's definitely far cheaper than you expect anything in San Francisco to be. When we returned the truck, they didn't really inspect it very thoroughly. (I would blame that lack of thoroughness for the rodent droppings, but that's probably from having left the gate open in a rodent-infested area.) We folded the used furniture pads and left them in the truck, but then I realized that the others were still in their original bags. I tried to return them to the office, near where I had picked them up, but they made me walk them all the way down the long driveway (separate from the steep driveway) to where we had returned the truck. There's no good reason I had to carry those heavy things an eighth of a mile down a random driveway; it was just for the convenience of the workers here. The actual customer-service experience was probably a three. The people who work here are no-nonsense, and at least the ones in the store itself are very efficient. This used to be a Wonder Bread factory, and they have an original Wonder Bread box up as a cute little display. I've heard horror stories about the other two San Francisco U-Haul locations, and I don't consider my experience anything near a horror story. Still, I don't think I'd choose this location specifically for truck or trailer rental, unless I was moving out of San Francisco for good (God forbid) and returning it to a different location. read more

Such a nightmare of a place. It took over an hour to get my truck rented and there wasn't even a line. I rented it for 7 hours returned it on time last night and it still says my order is active 24 hours later and I'm getting charged by the hour. I've called the store 4 times today and uhaul customer service multiple times but they haven't been able to get a hold of the store. I arrived at 7:40 AM for my 8:00 AM reservation. The staff asked for an alternate contact and attempted to make a call. I explained that my alternate contact might not be available to answer at the moment. The staff then hinted at using the online reservation system or app and asked if I had another alternate contact. What is the point of being told to use the online system or app when I am physically present on-site? Am I expected to provide multiple alternate contacts just in case no one answers? What difference does it make whether I provide an alternate contact online or in person if they're just going to keep calling until someone picks up? I have rented cars from many companies before, but this is the only one that requires an alternate contact and makes the customer wait while they try to reach them. To make matters worse, the staff had a grumpy attitude, and the manager wasn't particularly engaging either. I ended up canceling my reservation because I didn't want to waste any more of my time. 0/5 if we could, don't rent from this location: doing business with them was sketchy from start to finish. My partner and I rented a U-Haul from here a few weeks ago. He drove the truck across the GG bridge and realized it wasn't shifting correctly and wasn't safe to drive (it was also one of the biggest trucks you can rent). We called U-Haul and they arranged a tow through a third party, who confirmed with U-Haul on the phone that the truck wasn't safe to drive. They towed the vehicle, and all of this was arranged before the scheduled return time. Next morning, we get a call that the truck hasn't been returned. I asked them why their own record doesn't reflect the tow service they arranged - literally the only thing they said was they'd make a note in their file that it was towed. We were then sent a bill for almost $2,000, again saying we didn't return the vehicle. Still confused, we called and tried to explain this truck was unsafe to operate and was towed well before the deadline to return the vehicle - the second person we spoke to said the $2,000 bill was actually for "cleaning fees." Their manager never called us back, and we were once again sent an enormous bill with no additional information. It wasn't until we spoke with someone in collections that we discovered the truck was stolen in Oakland, where it was dropped off by the towing company THEY arranged. TLDR: The customer service at this location was beyond disempowering - it was shady and unethical. They actively withheld information about the theft, assuming they knew we aren't liable for something like that after they arranged a service for the vehicle, but hoping if we didn't know anything we would cover their costs anyway. Thank god for the kind rep (not directly associated with U-Haul) that clarified why we were actually being targeted with the outrageous bills. You may as well pay more up front to rent anywhere else, avoid the stress, frustration, and potential robbery. read more

Repeated messages went unanswered- in the end I contacted corporate who refunded the charge so at least it was resolved to my satisfaction. Make sure you check your final bill carefully. read more

If you are looking to rent a storage space in UHaul... DO NOT DO IT. Made a reservation that had 2 available spots online and when I got to the counter the next day, they said there were no available spaces of that size. So why is this a 4-star review? One reason and one reason alone. The manager Karen was incredibly kind, helpful, and attentive to my struggles. Without Karen I wouldn't have spent 3 hours doing Tetris in my tiny space, instead I would've just walked right on to the next one. Was it worth the struggle? No. But I am grateful that Karen helped me with my truck, my storage, and then with returning an item that I did not use. This is literally a Karen hype review. Everything else about UHaul sucks. 5-stars for Karen. 0 stars for UHaul, so I put 4 to hopefully make her happy. read more

While trying to move out of SF, I used basically all the different services here. Rented a truck, used the storage, bought lots of moving boxes, and finally loaded up some U-boxes at the depot there. Despite the 5 stars, I have my complaints. The place seems permanently under-staffed. Regardless of the day or the time I came, there's always a wait in line. Trying to get them on the phone is similarly a process involving long hold times. Be prepared to wait. I was also not warned that the storage unit I'd booked (the biggest one available) was an upper-level one, requiring me to schlep a bunch of stuff up stairs and leading to some very awkward moments trying to get a couch and mattress up into it. That said, when you do finally get service, it's fantastic. Which is why I have to give 5 stars. Anthony worked overtime to accommodate all the weird bookings I wanted to do, fixed up all the times I got glitched in the system, and he went the extra mile to make my move a success. And they keep late hours for equipment drop off and your stuff stored there. read more

When you rent a truck from U-Haul you sign a contract that says you will return the truck at a specific place and time. If you fail to do that there are additional charges. What happened to me was I returned the truck during business hours and U-Haul had nobody there to *accept* the truck. While waiting for someone there were more trucks. With a line of three trucks I talked to someone in rentals who said someone in returns would be coming. Someone in returns did show up. 25 minutes after I'd arrived. They weren't busy. They literally had nobody there. Someone literally drove up, in their personal car, hopped out and told me that if I'd done self-checkout (I had... because *nobody was there*) everything was OK. So I told U-Haul if I (would have had) to pay late fees for bringing the truck back late... they should give me the same amount in credit if they couldn't *accept* the truck on time. So they gave me $20 credit. I really like U-Haul trucks. Driving them is fun as hell. The 10 foot trucks are pretty fast when they are empty and surprisingly capable even when full. U-Haul corporate just sucks though. read more

Skip the app because its is frustrating and laborious, asks way too many questions and tends to churn, appears frozen, just as youre trying to finish your reservation. Customer service reps will be sure to remind you how it's your own fault the app didn't work well for you. You did something wrong. You didnt do this. You should have done that. They treat you like they are the police and you are the suspect. If you must use the app, definitely prebook from home on a laptop. Save gray hairs. Facility is clean, but storage units are a joke. Start laughing before you even get there because as hilarious as you might imagine, it's far worse once you're there, really sad. Just sad. Some of the units are 5-6 feet off the floor and you have to use a rolling staircase to get into them. Some of the units are only 4 ft tall so the concept of "into" is greatly diminished. Trucks: Beware that a 2-day rental is almost 3x as expensive as a 1-day rental. That's because in addition to the doubled base rental fee, you also pay double all the other fees, including city fees and insurance. Add the tax to all that and it the final amount is nearly 3x the 1-day fee. Still, it's a fairly good deal. Truck was clean and easy to drive. That's the great thing about U-haul. Terrible service from SF Uhaul. We booked a uhaul to move a week in advance. The day before we needed the vehicle, they informed us that it would only be available for pick up in San Mateo. Not only did uhaul refuse to compensate us for the extra hour of driving that this would require of us, they also refused to refund us for the extra mileage and gas that we would have to pay for, essentially making us pay more for the inconvenience they created. Given how expensive the service was to begin with, we were incredibly frustrated with their unwillingness to help and will not be using their services again in the future. read more

First of all, the two stars I'm giving are entirely for the staff who works here. Other than the initial person who checked me in, I generally have received good service here; from the janitorial worker cheerfully willing to lead me through the maze to find my unit the first time, to Gino, who is kind, helpful, patient, and an absolute pro. We were blown away by his skill in maneuvering a trailer. Management: he is a gem!! That said, the facility: I have rented many a U-Haul truck/trailer and generally, I've had a good experience with the brand. In March of 2020, I was moving from Oakland, needed to find a convenient (i.e. in-SF) storage space, and I was stoked when I found one here, ground level access, for $89/mo. I reserved it weeks ahead of my move. On move day, we loaded up my U-Haul truck, got to this facility, and I was told by a woman at the desk that there'd been some glitch with the reservation system and they didn't have the unit I'd reserved. Instead, what she did have was larger, up some stairs, and cost $209 (with rent increases, that eventually became $229!). She clearly did not care and was unwilling to help me in any way, despite it being their fault and that I was basically now screwed because all my stuff was sitting outside in a truck that I had to return by the end of the day. So, of course I had to buckle and get the storage space that was more than twice as expensive. I would not have picked this facility had I been aware of what I would actually pay -- I booked it entirely thinking that I was getting a certain size, no stairs or elevators, for $89. It's located inside the old Wonder Bread factory, which is cool, but really impractical, especially for larger moves. The building is genuinely a maze and it's really easy to get lost in there even if you think you're good at reading maps! There is a secure upper loading bay (4th floor) that you can pull cars and trucks into and that serendipitously wound up being not too inconvenient to my unit. There are usually carts there for use, which is handy. So, moving in and getting things in/out of the unit wasn't too bad because I had a truck. Moving out with a trailer wound up being a bit of a nightmare. My unit was on the 4th floor and up a set of stairs. There's no room to maneuver the trailer in the upper area where they park the trucks and (unless you're Gino) it's quickly obvious why trailers aren't allowed up there. That meant we couldn't do it all on the same level; we had to push things to the elevator, wait for the elevator, go downstairs, and outside to the trailer. As far as I could tell, there was only one elevator for the entire facility of thousands of units. We probably made 10 trips back and forth and it was slow and slow-going having to deal with the elevator. I hadn't been to my unit in a few months and the facility clearly had some water intrusion happen with the recent monsoon weather, based on the pads laid out around the place. read more

The woman at the counter was rude to me (maybe just extremely curt but definitely not friendly), I didn't get the blankets I paid for, the gas tank was empty when I got the car, the tire pressure sensor was broken and said one of my tires had a 22 PSI vs the other 3 who had 75 but it was impossible to fill up when I tried. I open a unit on this location because I'm moving to a different state and won't be able to move it right away. Thinking that uhaul is my good option to store my items and it's a safer place, I give them a try. A gentleman helped me open a unit. The original unit he gave me was 2544, I walked to that unit and it was occupied already, I told him that and he then find me another one which is the one across from it 2543. I put my items in their and go. Fast forward yesterday 10/17, I came to put more items in there and to my surprise my unit 2543 has no longer my padlock and it has a green zip tie on it and my items are no longer in the unit. I called the employee to ask them what happened and at first they are not sure what happened. One of them was jasmine I believe that was her name she was the first one who found out what happened. She told me that the day I open my unit, the person who helped me did not change the unit number in their system. And so when they found my items on unit 2543 it doesn't have any name on it on their system. This place better find my items because they are not just a item. Those are collections that I collected over the years. And for a company like uhaul to do something irresponsible like this is not acceptable. You need to get a proper protocol for something like this. I understand that there are people who abandoned their unit but for someone who has an item to a unit that doesn't have a name on it but has a padlock? You will think to at least do some researching for it because you just simply throw or put away the items. I trusted you guys to keep my items safe and yet loss them just like that? your Insurance cannot pay me enough to even start my collection. I really do hope the manager can find out who took out my items and what did they do to it. read more

Had to go here today because the Valencia St location doesn't have pick up trucks. I love the Valencia St location. i don't like Bryant St. As expected, they were horrible. They told me to take a picture of the mileage and gas when i left so if there were any issues they'd make it right when I returned. Gas was wrong, mileage was correct. I took pictures as instructed. At return, I showed them (different agent of course) the gas tank picture. The time was clearly marked. Oh no they don't care because I was supposed to upload the picture onto their website or something which they didn't tell me. They just kept saying 'you signed a contract.' yup, I did. Customer service as usual for this location. Keep your expectations rock bottom low and you'll be fine. read more

Don't rent from here. They do not run a tight ship. They will rent out your reserved vehicle even after someone from their team calls and confirms it will be held for you. Many of the front desk staff here are low-tier. In particular, the short round lady with dark frizzy hair in a ponytail offloads her laziness and incompetence onto the customers. She once gave us sass about requesting to get keys to the Ford van we originally ordered since the company bait and switched us (they advertised a fuel-efficient Ford but gave us a gas guzzling GMC). This same lady also was the one who told us our reserved van was rented, "because we were late" she incessantly kept repeating -- although we were still within the 1 hour window, and the clerk on the phone confirmed she'd hold it for us. She reluctantly offered the 10 foot truck so I said that's fine and asked if they could charge us the .99 cents/mile that we would've had with the van (since now the price would rise to 1.19/mile). She refused. So easy decision. We just won't rent from this U-Haul going forward. --As I walked out, we spotted our van waiting for us in the parking lot... Not sure why this place has so many bad reviews. I've stored here, rented a van and even purchased moving supplies. I've always had a great experience. Yes, the location isn't in the best part of the city with homeless encampment's everywhere, but how is that their fault? It's not. The customer service associates weren't rude at all, they were super helpful and greeted me upon entry and exit. The associate that rung me up double checked to make sure I grabbed everything I needed and even gave me a recommendation for movers. The boxes didn't have a chemical smell. At the end of the end of the day I got no truck but I did get $50 because they didn't actually get me the truck. I assume nobody can pick up a pickup or cargo van (probably not box trucks) after hours at this location so I would think they are giving away a lot of money because of their $50 reservation guarantee. My review I might be an idiot but I was under the impression that 7:30 pm was later that 7:00 pm. Apparently uhaul uses a different clock than the rest of us. Also, my understanding of the term "24/7" means that the service is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Again. Uhaul apparently is switching things up. I reserved a van for 7:30 pm for a 24/7 pickup but when I arrived at exactly 7pm. Maybe 6:59 the guy was closing the gate and told me I was out of luck. He told me to go talk to the manager but also said he wasn't gonna be there. They said they don't offer 24/7 pickup. I spent almost an hour on hold with customer service. The agent was actually very nice and helpful. He also was able to honor the $50 reservation guarantee. This is the second time in a row that I have been extremely unhappy with uhaul and I really hope I never have to use them again. read more

U BOX service is Atrocious!!! This location management is HORRIBLE!!!!! I started this disaster with 6 Uboxes...I have paid UHAUL over $60k in storage fees. I had to empty out a 4bd house quickly and thought Uboxes would be a good idea as I didn't have a destination yet. MISTAKE #1 LESSONS LEARNED: -each location had different pricing on the UBoxes -none of the locations like sitting the UBoxes -you will pay $$$ thousands of dollars having your boxes moved to your new location almost $3k for me personally. - once you recurved your boxes you will see extreme damage of your property. This damage occurs during the handling of the boxes. Between transport onto flatbed, forklift operator moving around boxes, etc.. you will state your horror and each location will have other people to blame!!! - one of the boxes & All furniture in box got destroyed... No one took ownership!!! It was so badly damaged that the employees had to use crowbar to remove lock and jimmy the door open. Furniture inside damaged!! -this location specifically: repeatedly sends boxes to Hayward without my consent!! -repeatedly recurved harassment calls Scott boxes... That Have never had missed pmts!!! I have had these boxes over 14yrs!!! Still get harassing calls! -latest saga from this location specifically...I had box access scheduled for Wednesday. I called scheduling before access time, said I was sick needed to reschedule... Told no problem. So why Friday... This is the worst center. The only thing that is good about this storage space is that it is clean and close to where I live. The staff over the last 5 years has been terrible. Yesterday was the experience to date. Service staff was condescending and unhelpful. They seemed more concerned about theft prevention than provide us excellent customer service. We were upgrading our unit and the unit size we reserved online wasn't available in reality. No apologies, no empathy, nothing. Your current process made it VERY difficult to transition to a larger unit. We ended up with a smaller size unit and did our best to make it fit our needs. They have us trapped as customers because you know it's not easy for us to move our business elsewhere. The alarms in the building are at an ear damaging decibel and go off regularly. They are unbelievably loud. They should swap out the yellow buttons used to keep carts in their home location. Twice while moving our storage contents we clipped a yellow button and sent our valuables tumbling to the ground. The location is a huge maze and the staff didn't do anything to help show us the easiest route from our old to new storage unit. Half way through our several hour move we identified a closer freight elevator and a much short route between our two points. It would have been nice for the staff to have provided that guidance and improved our experience. The pass card to access the building (which we have been using for years) denied us access into the storage floor and when I took it to the customer representative to find out why she told me our card wasn't assigned to our unit and then proceeded to argue with me when I shared we've only had the one unit will ever at this U-haul location. She we a larger woman and very unpleasant to deal with. I tried to engage with her and be friendly and got nothing from her. Same with the gentleman who helped me. The sign about the large, recent investment in carts above the cart station on level two is tacky and should be taken down. Ensuring there are operational carts and moving tools is a cost of doing business. There were messages all over the building of what we can/can't do and some with associates charges for braking any rule. It didn't add to our experience in a positive way. The only positive point in our experience was a cleaning lady on the fourth floor who could see we were lost, stopped her work and proactively helped us. They need more people like her their staff. The kicker is that the staff parks in the few loading space available. read more

My partner bought some boxes here and they smelled so strongly of chemicals that I had to put them outside, they were giving me a headache. Same with the moving blanket we got. Disgusting. We rented a van today and the seats were covered in dog hair. The location is super depressing... it's better to walk on the road than the sidewalk. read more

Buyer beware - every year there's a problem with the automatic check payment, which works to their advantage. This is the one business I deal with where checks go missing and there's a $15 late charge several times a year despite automated payments scheduled for 2 weeks before the due date. I plan to close up soon. read more
