We ended our quest for the perfect Texas BBQ here. I'm still bitterly disappointed that of the four bbq places we tried a total of NONE offered Mac & cheese. This place at least had the green beans of my dreams, wonderfully spiced perfectly. I had the chopped brisket one meat plate with potato salad & the wonderful beans. The meat was tender & juicy & the sauce was spot on. Some nice TX toast rounded it out. The hubs had one of the sausage options & it was delicious. We decided to try dessert; the hubs said the banana pudding was very good. I got a huge serving of peach cobbler which I would have enjoyed more with a little less cobbler with a dollop of ice cream. All in all a great bbq experience that would have been 5 stars if some creamy Mac & cheese had been an option. read more

Stopped here on our way from Colorado to Louisiana thanks to other yelpers! This locally owned BBQ restaurant was the best! And being from Louisiana we love good food! We had the turkey, brisket (might have been the best I've ever eaten), ribs, chopped brisket sandwich and pulled pork sandwich. For sides, make sure to get the jalapeño corn and the chili stew. (That's not the official name but that IS the official description!) TENDER AS A MOTHER'S LOVE! This sandwich alone lives up to any hype. Amazing food and service. From the outside it looks a little sketchy, but inside is defined the welcoming! The staff are friendly and go out of their way to check on you. Great little barbecue shack. Waited to review until I could come back for seconds. So far I have had their ribs brisket and hot links, along with thier peach cobbler , Chile chicken stew , Cole slaw and potato salad. The brisket has a firm bark 1/4 inch smoke ring and my goodness is it juicy, the ribs are fall off the bone tender with a fairly think bark to match the smoke ring, no clue if it's a combination of dry rub and wet rack but, it has a slightly stick ,sweet and spicy flavor that is just fantastic. The hot links has great spice with a velvety smooth texture. Cobbler was tasty and not too sweet. Which is saying allot since I'm diabetic. Chile stew was delightfully spicy not over barring. Cole slaw was light and refreshing. The potato salad was rich and creamy and I'm just guessing but, pickle juice is in it and makes the flavor awesome. The staff is really nice , helpful and consistently upbeat. Price are very reasonable for a barbeque restaurant. Oh and to boot the place is always clean. This is exceptional Texas Barbeque. I mixed the slaw in with the chopped brisket and cleaned the 2 ribs down to the bone. The service was also fast and friendly. The only miss is the peach cobbler, which was good, but definitely a step below the quality found in the BBQ. The cobbler had far too much filling and not nearly enough crust. Additionally, this imbalance caused the small amount of crust to predictably be soggy. It is still good because cobbler filling alone would be a delicious desert, but I include this as a note to the proprietor as they clearly take pride in their product and this is the only thing (that I had) that could improve: notice I'm still giving them 5 well-deserved stars. If the cobbler is a family recipe and you know that it is balanced when you cook it, look at how it is prepared/distributed throughout a service. This could be due to packaging it early or the staff not portioning with an eye for balance or any number of things. It could also still be the recipe, and I suggest making some award-winning cobbler recipes to compare. You're killing it with the amazing BBQ, but you could make that cobbler just as big a draw without much additional food cost if you give it more of the love you've clearly invested in your BBQ. read more

I had lunch here on 02/21/19 and it was very good. First, you better get here early. I had business in Amarillo and was finished rather quickly. I had read about Tyler's in Texas Monthly and wanted to try it, since I'm on a mission to find the best BBQ in Texas, which is no small feat. I arrived at Tyler's at 11 a.m. and was surprised to find the parking lot was already full. Like I said, you better get there early!! Upon entry, there was still plenty of table space, but folks were lined up. I ordered the two meat plate - pork ribs and sausage. The pork ribs were cooked just right and plenty meaty. The sausage was great and wasn't greasy. Dee-lish is my 4-star rating. l will definitely return. Highly recommended if you're in the Amarillo area! How does it compare with others? I rate Tyler's in my Top 10, but still not No. 1 - which is the Salt Lick in Driftwood, TX (southwest of Austin). read more

I was a bit nervous trying BBQ that was so inexpensive, because it seemed too good to be true - but I trusted the amazing yelp reviews and made my way over here. The restaurant itself is small and divey, and you could easily miss it if you weren't looking. Personally, I think this adds to it's charm. There were plenty of places to sit inside, which was great since it was about 30 degrees outside when we went! The service was AMAZING! The person who took out order was super helpful, bed gave us tips on what to choose. And now, THE FOOD! Wow. My expectations were pretty high, and they were definitely met! Texas knows how to do BBQ. We stopped here in the midst of our cross country RV trip (based on the yelp reviews). The staff was SUPER friendly, but the food.... the food was amazing! My husband is a huge BBQ fan and he thought it was some of the best he'd ever had. My brisket sandwich was incredibly tender. If I had to eat at only one location for the rest of my life, without hesitation I would choose Tyler's. Verily I volunteer as tribute to the BBQ deities. I'm not as blown away from the food as everyone has been reviewing. Its got some really really good Texas BBQ, but its not the best I've had in my life. I came here with my family so I had a little sample of almost everything they offered here (ribs, brisket, pork, hot links, sausage, potato salad, and coleslaw). This little hole in the wall looking shop has some very tender meat at a very very inexpensive price. By far, the ribs were the best! Pulled pork and brisket were a close second. If you add Tyler's special BBQ sauce is a must on the brisket and pork. It makes it taste so much better. Their BBQ sauce is spot on. As for the sides, I especially enjoyed their coleslaw. It wasn't creamy or mayonnaisey at all; it had a nice light, vingerette flavor to it. What put this place over the top for me was the service. The workers treat you like family. They helped us with every step, choosing meats, and even letting us try some of them before we ordered. We tried Tyler's because of all the reviews and we were not disappointed! My daughter is a pulled pork fan and would eat it at every meal if we'd let her. The pork came undressed and you could taste the smoke and love in it! The sauce had a nice spice that made it addictive! We both had a side of peach cobbler that was out of this world! The slaw was good but my Gram's is of course better ;-) The people working there were super nice and friendly! We will happily return next time we are through Amarillo! read more

Tyler's Barbeque was some pretty solid meat, I just found everything to be 'boring', especially for a 'Texas Monthly' Top 50 joint. I imagine most people visiting here are just passing through Amarillo (I also imagine Amarillo to be some small town that exists just to populate the panhandle, so I'm sure my imagination could use some help coming to terms with reality.), therefore there really is no reason not to eat here, since there isn't much else to do while passing through Amarillo, and it is much better than gas station food. Not the most diverse menu: basic sides and brisket, ribs & sausages. Food: -Brisket: Mine were large slices to account for its slight 'over-tenderness', which is fine. Good smokiness and covered in grease, like it was sitting in the grease for awhile. My biggest problem with it was the apparent lack of seasoning. I like more pepper in my brisket rub. Personal preference... -Ribs: Good tenderness, good smokiness & untrimmed spares. The seasoning wasn't sweet, which was nice. Overall, good ribs. -Pulled Pork: A special, instead of a menu regular. Not good. Sitting in grease and mushy. At least it was smoky. -Potato Salad: Plain o' Potato Salad. Nothing special about it. -Coleslaw: Looks peppery, but in fact is bland. Almost no taste, just too much mayo, and even then not in a good way. -Peach Cobbler: Soggy cobbler. Not crispy, and then not even flavorful to make up for it. A tame flavor. -Sauces: The sauces didn't seem well balanced to me. One was way sweet, and then the other seemed too spicy compared to other flavors involved (not extremely spicy, but it didn't seem balanced with the other flavors). __________________________ Conclusion: Other than achieving meat with good tenderness and quality smokiness, everything else seemed under seasoned and 'bland', especially for a place in 'Texas Monthly' Top 50 BBQ. Based on the ribs alone this place is a five star. These ribs are some of the best I have ever had. That is saying a lot from someone who seeks out good bbq on the regular. I ordered 2 meat plate with brisket and ribs. Ribs - Perfect don't think you could ask for better. Brisket - Not the traditional flavor of salt and pepper I was looking for. This was still a really good brisket though the dry end was a little dry and I wasn't fond of the rub. The smoke ring was good. It had a good bark even though I wasn't big on the extra flavor. The moist in was a lot better than the lean end. Had potato salad and cobbler for sides. I liked the potato salad but was not a fan of the peach cobbler. To much cinnamon for a peach cobbler, might have been great for an apple cobbler. I will be stopping back in here any time I am through Amarillo. The sauce has so much flavor without being heavy or overpowering over the beef. The beef is tender and delicious on its own. And the roll is a great accompaniment, it's soft, light and buttery. The hot links add just the right spice for me. Makes me wanna slap the dog! Ok, they fell short with the beans, they're like beans and water. Not much flavor or spice. But what the beans lack in flavor the potato salad makes up for it. Chose the potato salad and you won't be disappointed. Wish I wasn't so full I would have tried the cobbler. I didn't realize this place was right next to my motel, yeah for me! The service is awesome, although there is a line, but it took about 10 mins. The owner was sweeping the floor and he kept us entertained. We stopped here on a road trip from GA to CA (over 2,000) miles and this was by far our best stop throughout the weekend. Because of COVID, we're still reluctant to dine in so we did takeout, which makes this experience even more impressive. I've had ribs all over the country and nothing has been as good as the ribs I had at Tyler's tonight. It's not hype, it's not overrated. The sides of creamed corn, coleslaw and green beans were great, the brisket and pulled pork were also terrific, but not nearly as unforgettable as the ribs. Around Christmastime, my boyfriend and I drove from Los Angeles (where I live) to New York (to visit my hometown and family). We mapped out several eateries we wanted to try along the way, and Tyler's was at the top of our list. We trust YELP reviews and YELP did not let us down. Tyler's was even better than we expected! My Dad recently asked me where we'd met the nicest people on our journey, and Tyler's Barbeque staff and regular customers were the absolute nicest. I asked a bunch of questions while ordering (had to make sure I was picking the best) and Tyler and his team were patient and I never felt like I was bugging them. The regulars here asked about our journey and were exceptionally nice. Coming from LA, where people don't say hello to each other on the sidewalk, it was amazing to come to a local institution and be treated like family. Our only regret is that on our return trip, we passed through Amarillo on a Monday when Tyler's was closed! We're stilling jonesing for more and looking forward to next time.
