    Shaken matcha

I stopped by for the shaken matcha! It was beautiful and had the perfect balanced flavor profile. The to-go counter was perfect and they let you use the bathroom inside which is a bonus. I want to come back and try the food

Really solid spot for sushi bowl! We came in for a casual meal and left pretty happy. The salmon chirashi was fresh and well portioned. The Unadon was my favorite with glazed eel over rice. We also tried their signature matcha, which was a surprise. Served without milk, it had a clean, straightforward flavor think of it like an Americano but for matcha, lightly sweetened and refreshing. The place is tucked inside an alley, so it took us a moment to find but it was worth the hunt though!

I tried the shaken matcha and the butter mochi. This was my first time having a matcha drink that wasn't a latte. It was good but the caffeine hit me harder than I expected. It came sweetened and can probably be ordered without the syrup. The drink itself is expensive so it's not something I'd get regularly. I didn't care for the butter mochi but thought the value was decent for three pieces. The place was hard to find initially because it's in the alley. The line was short when I visited. Service was decent and the line moved quickly.

This review is for the daytime cafe menu. It took me a few tries to figure this place out. I've probably been to the cafe four times now and it is finally a five star for me now. First of all, you can now sit upstairs to eat your food. This is key for me, as it isn't cheap, and being able to have a place to properly enjoy your food is important. I believe there are also a few small tables in the alley for outdoor dining. The first time I had the limited premium shaken matcha I was very disappointed. It is served sweetened by default, which is not usual for premium matcha. If the matcha is good, I want to taste the flavor profile of the matcha, not sugar. It didn't even cross my mind that a premium matcha drink would be sweetened, so I didn't think to ask for unsweetened -- my fault. I've since had it unsweetened and it is good, not the best I've ever had, but very good for DC. I had a harvest latte here that was also exceptional. The drinks are top notch. The charashi here are just as beautiful in person (more!) than they are on socials. More importantly, they are phenomenal. The fish and rice were perfect in a recent bowl I tried. I will definitely be back and think it's (almost) worth the price point. The rotating desserts are also very much worth the calories. I look forward to trying more seasonal desserts as they release them. In a world full of overdone restaurants, I appreciate the simplicity of this cafe which focuses solely on quality.

    Omakase

Overall, it's a good spot but I wouldn't say it's anything unique or amazing for omakase. I enjoyed some pieces, my favourite being the shark fin piece, and some pieces felt pretty normal/basic. They offered us a second piece of uni, but didn't really disclose it was an additional $20, which I was a little like c'mon, but the uni was still good. This omakase spot is more of a one and done type of spot for me, but still was an enjoyable time!

We didn't have any issues getting a reservation and came to celebrate our anniversary. While we inputted this into our reservation, there wasn't anything out of the ordinary of a normal reservation such as a card or a mention (which was fine but maybe a note if you're looking to celebrate other special occasions here). This was in DC so there was some street parking but always recommend allowing yourself some time to park if driving. Tucked away, once you go inside, there is a doorbell. They come down to escorted you upstairs. It's a nice space upstairs and pretty quiet, easy to talk and have conversation. The Omakase was a great experience and we loved everything we had. We also tried an uni tasting for an extra $100. Everything was great. While we didn't mind, it would have been nice to know the cost of the additional uni tasting and even had to ask for specifics on some of the sake prices. Service was friendly but the flow and timing could use some improvement. Delicious otherwise and worth a visit. The chef was great and was talkative as well with the guests.

I was walking to a nearby coffee shop and noticed the long line in the alley nearby. I returned and decided to let my curiosity get thr best of me! I showed up right before closing and was greeted with kindness. I ordered through the kiosk and in person. Yes, I made two separate orders after standing there waiting for the first order. I ended up walking away with a salmon hand roll, matcha butter mochi, and a seasonal drink. Everything was really tasty and Im so glad that I decided to check this spot out! Now, my experience is with the Two Nine Cafe located downstairs from the Two Nine Omakase restaurant upstairs. I love sushi and will come back to try out the omakase experience but the cafe spot was a nice introduction! This is an alley in Georgetown. Parking will be crazy but not impossible in the area. Seating outside the cafe is non existent outside of a couple of stools. It's a great meeting point while exploring the area, honestly!

    Unadon, basque cheesecake, matcha latte

I've been curious about this place for a long time and I'm glad I gave it a try! Ordering at the window is quick, and I got the food within 15-20 minutes - it's all made to order. I got the unadon with extra veggies, and it was delicious. I love that they give you nori sheets to make little rolls with too. I would definitely order this again: perfectly cooked eel, delicious rice, and wasabi that really punches you in the face. The Basque cheesecake was a 2/10 for me: badly overbaked, unpleasant texture, little to no vanilla flavor. This should not have been served in its state, as someone who loves to make Basque cheesecake (the draw of it is the custardy texture with the burnt top: it should never, never be dry). The matcha latte was wonderful but definitely overpriced at $10, premium matcha or no. Still, I enjoyed it a lot - perfect sweetness level - and I'm glad I tried it! The cup it comes in is adorable too. I ate upstairs and love the little sunny counter space. Overall, very impressed with the eel and latte and very disappointed by the cheesecake, but I'll give them a second chance on desserts in case they were having an off day (but I maintain that it shouldn't have been served to guests). I'd be curious to try their hand rolls next time, or their chirashi bowl!

I've only gotten takeout for their lunch deals, and the fish quality is great. It is pricey for what I would typically spend for lunch, but you are paying for the quality. The staff are great as well. It was pouring rain one day, and the staff let me wait inside for my food (the inside is closed during lunch hours). Even when ordering at the counter, I usually don't have to wait too long.

This is a review for their daytime cafe. I got their trio of hand-rolls and an iced matcha latte. I love their coffee cups and I actually have reused it for a while! Their matcha is top notch. I really loved the hand-rolls and they were very fresh, but it was a little pricey for a regular occasion casual lunch. I will definitely be back for their drinks.

My friend and I have been dying to try this place out after seeing their turtle shaped fruit filled pastry puffs and limited authentic matcha menu on Instagram- but after setting out on a rainy Saturday morning at opening to ensure we could have our top choices, there were no pastries available other than a premade mochi. Their setup is advertised as a cafe in the morning and a omakase in the evening, but the actual operation is very confusing. They aren't clear about when/what pastries are available and it was really disappointing to not have more treat choices. After asking the one worker, he wasn't sure either. We asked to sit inside because of the rain and were sat upstairs in the omakase space with no music and a flickering light. It was very odd. The matcha was delicious though and I hope to one day figure out when those turtles are there!

What can I say ... I pay for food + experiences... I pay, a lot. And you get what you pay for at the sleek counter of Two Nine's Omakase!!! Hawaii born head Chef puts charm and technique into the prefix experience that can be paired with a sake flight (or buy the bottle options) which of course we had to do. Opening bites of pickle salads and cuddle fish sashimi are inventively lightly sauce with familiar Japanese flavors of yuzu and ponzo. Then the sashimi rolls out. Amazingly fresh cuts of salmon, tuna, and special fish flown in fresh come out back to back. Like I said, I'm a huge fan of this style of cuisine and Two Nine is putting out some of the best quality in DC. The blow tour h comes out for some flayer and Kampei's fly as the sake flows. It's easy to make friends with your neighbors at the bar and the light banter from the wait staff and Chef make the space feel warm and welcoming. Post fish palate bomb was the jerkeied tuna veins which are hard to explain but so unique and delicious I'd eat a whole bowl of these!!!! At this point they could offer to sell me all the Tea in China and I'd scream TAKE MY MONEY!!! So if course the optional A5 Wagyu co.es out and I'm all in!!. Seared and served sashimi style with an adorable spritz bottle of a soy salt solution to taste. Do I even need to describe why A5 is so expensive??? No. If you know, you know. At this point we are loud, full and happy. Do you want to b loud, full and happy? Make your reservations now. You might even catch me at the end of the bar. Let's be friends!

    TOKUJO

Yesss. It is my honor to be the first reviewer. I've been following them since the pandemic at their Mess Hall days and then at Grace Street. I'm so excited that their custom built brick and mortar is HERE. The building is beautiful, hidden in an alley with custom made art pieces, they really thought about everything -so detailed. Online ordering is easy for their sushi takeout. Parking is a bit tricky but I promise it's worth the trip. Soft launch this week with their sushi bowls and some nigiri. Next week they start serving desserts and drinks with takeout. Their sushi bowls are fresh, beautiful, meticulous, and delicious as always. The Tokujo is one of my favorites... Everything from raw scallops to Japanese uni to a variety of fishes, pickled bits, mushrooms... The whole box is a gem full of bursts of varied flavor. They are not playing around. I'm excited for our omakase reservations in a few weeks.

It's a lovely thing to wander through before heading in to eat just a few feet away. The setting itself doesn't feel like Washington at all. With the charming little patio and relaxed vibe, you could imagine you're in another country, and it strikes a wonderful balance between easygoing and sophisticated. Little touches go a long way for me, and they nailed them here: silverware with the lovely illusion of polished silver and elevated stemware that added an extra bit of vibe to the whole experience. The staff were wonderfully accommodating from the start: everything was still soaked from the heavy rain the night before, but they went out of their way to set us up in a lovely shaded spot so we'd stay cool and comfortable. That same care showed up in a much bigger way later, when one of our party passed out from a health issue unrelated to the meal, and the team handled it with calm, attentiveness, and real heart. Now, the food. The brunch menu hits all the classics, chicken and waffles, eggs Benedict with fun variations featuring crab and smoked fish, all the good stuff. I settled on the lobster roll, which was incredibly good, served with Old Bay fries that came out perfectly hot and crisp, exactly the way fries should always arrive, with ketchup on the side. We also tried the tuna tartare and the buffalo oysters, which were a blast: fried oysters with a blue cheese dressing and hot sauce, served in the cutest presentation in shells on smooth lake pebbles. On the drinks side, I had a "Bloody Margaret," a gin-based riff on a Bloody Mary, and it was wonderfully spicy, just the way I like it. The cocktail list overall is playful and worth exploring. Oysters are clearly one of their fortes. They focus on Virginia oysters, so it's a single variety, but they do a lot with it across a range of preparations. There's also a fun Virginia peanut-centric theme running through the menu.

The Parker House Rolls were fluffy, but nothing I would put on the highly recommended list. Our waiter was very kind and personable. Other than that, I'm not sure if I would come back. Most people enjoy Caribbean style restaurants that master various fish for a fraction of the price and more food. While the "more food part" may be considered low- brow, I'm sure I am saying what many are thinking.

I was there during brunch service and found a menu that covered a lot of bases. My main interest was seeing if they still offered fried clam bellies, a rarity in the D.C. restaurant scene. Nope, no bellies, but on offer under the brunch appetizers were Stuffies (three baked top neck clams, smoked linguica, lemon, breadcrumbs, house hot sauce, $13), along with more traditional starters, including clam chowder ($7 cup, $12 bowl), fried calamari (roasted garlic pomodoro sauce, fried cherry peppers & artichoke, lemon, $15). I ended up ordering the North Shore Roast Beef sandwich (horseradish cream, BBQ sauce, American cheese, onion roll, with fries, $19). More than enough for brunch and lunch the following day. Service was good, and the meal was excellent. Note the Salt Line's transparency, where it explains that "DC restaurants have been operating with dynamic and significant increases in labor wages, food costs, and the general cost of doing business in DC. We have chosen to implement a 4% operational surcharge - which does not go towards gratuity - as the most comprehensive way to address this." Seems to me to strike a decent balance, but I'm not all that up to date about the living wage issue in the services industry. In any event I respect The Salt Line's management for being up front about their surcharge policy.
