You know, you learn a lot when you travel. Being an obsession of mine, food is something that has…read morebeen part of that learning process for me. Sometimes it's the obvious. The best key lime pie I've ever had was in Key West. The best cherry pie I've ever had was in Traverse City. But, strangely enough, the best BBQ I've ever had was in a place called Victor, Idaho. And the best clam chowder I've ever had was not in Boston, but in the craziest hole in the wall bar in Westport, Washington State, where it seemed like 1983 as they literally played the Rebel Yell album by Billy Idol while we ate and some Rottweiler sat by our inside table begging for food. And that wasn't even the only dog running around inside the joint. My wife, early on, wanted to leave. I wanted to stay and see where this crazy train was headed. Me - 1, Her - 0.

The real reason you come to the Mermaid is the bar in the back, which is as divey as they come and absolutely terrific. Want a special cocktail? Well too bad, they probably won't have the mixer that it calls for. But if you want simple drinks or just an out of the way place to have a beer and experience the true locals, this is your spot. Popular with the fisherman, and definitely get rowdy if you stay too late. But if you dig a dive bar you have to check out the Mermaid. Great jukebox, pool table, good outdoor seating area.

The sandwiches are sliced to order. The staff that work there took time walking us though the daily specials (that are posted on instagram). And helped us also create a custom sandwich. They have a great selection of specialty items that are hard to find on the coast for a fair price. Plus- awesome beer and wine selection.

I have a fondness for international markets and sandwiches. So it was fortuitous to visit Gaetano's…read moreMarket & Deli in Astoria. It reminded me of two Italian spots in Seattle's Pioneer Square. Very popular since most of the onsite seating were occupied (6/20/25). No surprise after glancing at their menu, easily I could gravitate towards several of their sandwiches. Lots of merch and deli items are also available to select from. I ended up ordering a half pound of proscuitto (0.52 lb for $17.67). This was carefully sliced thin, packaged, and wrapped carefully, which was duly noted and greatly appreciated. We paused at window counter seats and had to sample the purchase before departing. Absolutely delicious! Helped elevate a meal the next day too. I may have to return to indulge in one of their Italian sandwiches. Update: we did return to dine onsite at the same window counter seats (6/22/25). The Homie had the Hot Meatball ($14). Meaty with zesty sauce. I had the Salami Panini ($12), which reminded me of a fave Italian panini at Irwin's Bakery & Cafe in Seattle. Both were fantastic, hit the spot, clean plate club worthy, and definitely no takeout boxes needed! Gaetano's Market & Deli, a terrific find in Astoria!
