Pouhana is a must!!!
Sabrina F.

This place is a must if you are in the area. Pouhana is the best drink I have EVER had!

Entrance

We visited Twisted Tiki earlier this year and planned to return at some point. I have followed their account on Instagram for a long time, but it was never very active. Shaun is a new bartender there, and he is now posting new content regularly. His video about their Black Friday "buy one, get one free" Tiki mug offer prompted a return visit. The first time we visited, we sat at the bar in their main Tiki bar area. This time, we wanted to check out their "Lava Lounge" room across the hall from the main bar. This room has a mix of a nautical theme, lava and lava rock, and some Tiki elements. I would say this room seats about 15 people with a combination of three high top tables, several chairs facing a small bar top against the wall, and a few padded benches surrounding a crate in the middle. The room is dimly lit, and there is a big screen TV on the wall that normally displays flowing lava or the deck of a ship in a storm, but it was turned off when we visited. We were actually greeted by Shaun, and he described some of their current special off-menu drinks. We placed a drink order and I went to get a pizza and some tacos from the food court to bring back in. My first cocktail was an off-menu concoction which I would call "Shaun's pandan special" ($18). He mentioned that some of the ingredients were white rum, overproof rum, pandan syrup, and brown sugar. It has a great green color and he described how he made the pandan syrup himself. It is definitely boozy at first and finishes with a great nutty brown sugar flavor. Her first cocktail was also an off-menu Ube Pina Colada ($14). It has a great purple color and is garnished with two ube flavored cookies. It had a good pina colada flavor with ube in the mix. For my second cocktail, I was split between the Monkey Paw and Crystal Cove. One of the other bartenders actually let me try a little taste of the banana whiskey and mezcal to help me make my choice. I ended up going with the Crystal Cove (lime, orange, simple syrup, orgeat, dry curacao, mezcal, Guatemalan rum, $15). The smokiness from the mezcal was at the perfect level, and it was balanced well with the rum and other flavors. Her second cocktail was the Humuhumunukunukuapua (coconut, mango, lime, pineapple, blanco tequila, coconut shavings, $14). The primary flavors were coconut and pineapple and it had a light sweetness. It was nice to check out the Lava Lounge, but we were the only ones in there the whole time. From now on, we will sit on the main Tiki bar side. I definitely enjoyed my drinks more on this visit, and the Black Friday special for the Tiki mugs was a bonus. Keep up the good work Shaun, your efforts are very noticeable.

A cute little tiki speakeasy. Drinks are amazing and service is 5 stars. They take yelp reservations too.

Mana Tai

Went here with my family on a Wednesday night and it wasn't very busy. I had the Mana Tai but tried the other drinks my family ordered. Everything was really good and we could tell they put time into making the drinks! We were able to bring in Mexican food we ordered from inside the market but I saw they also had some tiki bites. Shaun the bartender was really friendly and also let us try a sample of a new drink he was working on. The tiki decor and vibes were on point! Would love to come back to this local spot next time I'm in town to visit family!

Mana Tai & Sandy chichi

My wife and I are in town for a convention so I sought out some local-ish tiki bars. This place is... fine. Very small, theming is decent, but I'm always wary when the menu doesn't list prices (although when the bill came it wasn't outrageous). Their Mana Tai tastes like a Twisted Tea?? Such a weird experience. Our waiter was nice but service was slow. Another one to cross off the list.

Kanaka rita

Super cute tiki bar! Drinks are pretty good and I loved the kanaka rita! Per tiki usual, drinks are sneakily strong. The service was great as well but there is a time limit! Excited to try more!

Agave my best and Missionaries don't fall (semi dry desert oasis menu lol)

I'm between a 3 and a 4 but it being the new year, erring on the kinder side. First, parking: do it in the structure! My friend and I arrived at the same time, I did street meter and she did garage; she paid 75 cents for 3.5 hours and I paid $7.75 for the street meter ($2 per hour) The structure was marked city of Santa Ana on outside and the pay structure indicates first hour is free So it being Orange County and it not being a beach city, I've never loved that Santa Ana has paid parking so it's a knock against twisted tiki location wise. Like if I'm gonna get charged for parking and go to a tiki bar, I might as well go to Trader Sam's. Negatives: - It's a small and intimate space so if you're a party of two you're out of luck if you wanna sit at the table areas (saw someone ask and get shut down, reserved for larger parties as it were) - the second seating area doesn't open unless it's busier or fully staffed (there were 3 staff when we left and 2nd side was not opened) which is sad cause I peeked at it from the top of the stairs and there's a wicked looking octopus decor - the main menu doesn't have any prices - there's an interesting system of paying to rent a tiki glass (first time I've seen this but may be due to the second space or it being Santa Ana and prone to theft?) - took an unusually long time to get our bill Positives - menu is fun and cheeky - walk ins pretty easy - bartender was really good about keeping water glass topped off - drinks were generally delish - you can bring food in from Public market vendors

We found parking in a structure a block across from this place. It says $1.25 per hour or so but when we exited, it was free. It's inside the McFadden public market food hall,2 With a barcade conveniently located upstairs. There's two seating area- one is a room with the bar and booths, while we were seated in the other small room that felt like we were inside a ship. It's a really cool speakeasy-kinda place, with creative decor. As all tiki drinks typically are, it's very sweet. I only drank one to avoid hangovers from all the sugar. You scan the QR code for the menu. We ordered a drink similar to a Pina colada, and another one with whiskey with other fruit juices. The waiter was very attentive and checked on us every now and then. Cool small tiki bar to check out!

Love the mugs

Forever on the hunt for new tiki bars, we put on our best and headed over to Twisted Tiki in Santa Ana! Arrived at around 9 and were able to get seated right away. The set up in this place is interesting. Split into two sides, makes the place seem more intimate, which was great for date night. For food, luckily Twisted Tiki is located in the McFadden public market and we were able to snag some grub from the food court inside. I love having options so this came in clutch. Ok to drinks! We had the Sandy chi chi, The Mai Tai, the purple Polynesian sunset, the Humuhumu, and of course had to take a mug home which included one drink in it I can't remember. All were fabulous! If I had to pick a favorite it was definitely the Sandy chi chi, coconutty, creamy, and delicious. Super great start to our date night. As a pair who can appreciate all things tiki, we enjoyed the experience.

When I said "Bar" and "Santa Ana" in the Yelp search - of course it said "Club 616" in the first…read morespot - OF COURSE IT SAID 616!!! I was lucky enough to stumble across this gem of the center of OC when they first opened - and I am proud to be a regular here. I don't know how to go somewhere else - because I feel like the staff are giant gems in this jewel of a spot. Winters is a curator of boozy information that has helped me learn about "gin" and "root beer whiskey" so I can sound like an adult-ish purveyor, when really I know close to nothing except being a willing student to his creations. Dan the Man and Jacob always see me raise my hand in the corner of the bar, like the student I am, and have been willing to fill in the blanks for me when I know I am of thirst, but do not have the words for what to order. Every person working in the well has treated me with kindness - they have taken the time to get to know me, and I will be forever appreciative of how they have taken care of me over the years. But the real joy has been the transformation that this spot has for building a community of people in Santa Ana for real recognizing real. I have been bringing my Dad with me to play pool for the past few years. Sometimes people ask me if he plays professionally, I am terrible, and my skill incline is slow, he is patient and plays with the same level craftiness that the staff offer the cocktails. My Dad is always stoked when we have time to go have a few hours of games at 616 - especially now that there are regulars on 4th street that are excited to see that he is there playing - and they rush to write their names on the chalkboard to challenge him - or beat him in a game they really earned the W. On lazy Sundays, I watch couples sit with their drink, listening to Jazz, and watching my Dad whoop my ass while making amazing shots. I am forever grateful to Memo who sometimes takes a break from his shift behind the bar to give my dad an actual challenge - which allows me the chance to watch my Dad enjoy fellowship around the table. Knowing the table was a relic of the bars former self, and knowing the history that this spot has in Santa Ana is a reminder that so much around us can change - but it is those moments of the crack of the rack, the cheer of getting the combo shot, and the shake of hands when it's over that shows that it's not just about the pool table - but about the energy of a place that is welcoming and curated by people who care about what they do - and care about who comes through their doors. Thank you Jason and Mike B to bringing this to 4th St and supporting the community that was already here - and for building a community for the future. Thank you to Christina and Brandon for always having amazing pictures, decor, and fun events at 616 that help introduce new folks into this great spot. Time is short. Learn about Root Beer Whiskey. Write your name on the Chalk Board. No one lives forever.

My personal favorite was the fried rice, but everything else was tasty too! We also got dessert which was the pandan butterscotch pudding - yummy! Service was wonderful. They were attentive and kind and quick. They brought out some birthday ice cream for the two birthday girls in the party. Ambiance was great. We came with reservations on Saturday night before Mother's Day. The first thing I thought when I walked in was that there was a live band playing with bad speakers because the music was so loud. But when I saw there was no band, I thought maybe their speakers were broken because the music had that scratchiness to it. Then I realized it was a DJ spinning vinyls with foreign music from the 1950's with that scratchy vintage sound on full blast (think shrill trumpets and shrill voices.) Now don't get me wrong, the music was wonderful and very unique ( again, a lot of foreign songs) with a few I even knew...my husband and I loved most of the songs that were played. HOWEVER not when it's so loud that we can't even hear our own thoughts! I felt annoyed within the first 5 minutes of being seated when my family and I had to keep repeating ourselves, and my husband even went to check the rest of the place to see if it was any quieter anywhere else, but it was blaring music everywhere. I ended up ordering for my whole table of 8 people because we couldn't even hear each other over the music to make suggestions on what to order. My adult kids (all in their 20's) kept apologizing for recommending this place for my mother's day dinner. But oh my, the food was delicious---practically everything I ordered was amazing! OMG the hangar steak skewers, pork belly skewers, iberico pork secreto steak, little gem salad, and their bread with goatmilk -butter were my faves! We also had the short ribs and the pork fried rice with prawns but they were mid...nothing to write home about. This would've been a great place to come have a drink at the bar for happy hour or even late at night on a weekend since they open until 1am on thursday, friday, saturday... but don't come for dinner unless you bring earplugs and learn sign language or know how to read lips because there will be no conversations over dinner unless it's just to the person sitting next to you. Even so, I noticed the young couple next to us looking very annoyed-- they got up and left after quickly finishing up their one cocktail while the speakers blared out an instrumental piece of a girl moaning the whole time until she climaxed. Heck---I'll have whatever SHE'S having lol So plz keep the music down several notches until after 10pm, and let the rest of us enjoy our dinner so that we can sing praises on how delicious everything was. Until you do, I think I'll cross this place off my list for now and revisit again sometime in the FAR future.

Kudos to the owner as this is the only speakeasy in the OC that has a true speakeasy feel entrance. They had a gentleman open the peephole and ask for the entry code. Once we said the code we entered a really cool mine shaft area. The attention to detail was on point and I was impressed! We were then taken upstairs to a private bar where there are four tables of four so a max of 16. This makes sense as to why reservations are hard to come by. The only ding about seating is you are sat with strangers it is not a private table. Luckily we had a fun older couple at our table so it made the conversation more lively. Otherwise don't go here with an expectation of an intimate/ private date night. They also offer a limited food menu but looked very promising. However, we were here for a night cap so just dabbled in drinks. The bartender had a seasonal menu of 4 cocktails he created. He explained the drinks and then had us try each one with a straw. We then placed our order based on what we liked. He did say if we were not a fan he could create us our own personal cocktail as well. The old fashion he created was phenomenal! Overall, a cool little spot in the OC. Do wish they were open later as they do close at 11pm on Friday and Saturday.
