I have been dying to go here since I moved to Charlottesville FIVE years ago, and it did not disappoint! I am a huge lover of tea, and the menu is incredibly extensive. We ended up trying a delicious red tea, and it was so nice that it came in a red teapot to tell it apart from the other teas on the table. It was perfectly steeped and we loved sharing it for three of us. It was a good price for the whole pot. The space itself is really cool as well. The interior has cushioned spaces and would be an excellent place to read or study. The exterior where we sat is a great rooftop space with comfy benches and stools, and good sized tables to hold anything you've ordered. The absolute best part of the menu though are the homemade milkshakes. Do yourself a favor and get a green tea shake, with their green tea ice cream custom made by Chap's down the way. It is the perfect drink for a hot Charlottesville day, great to sip while strolling the mall. It might be my favorite sweet treat in the city. Make sure you stop by for one! read more

Amazing! We were in Charlottesville for the weekend and went here twice. Definitely try the Pu-Erh teas. The golden one is beautiful. They're so rich and earthy. I was introduced to the Tea Bazaar by a friend. I was going in completely blind completely unfamiliar to this experience, I was expecting a claustrophobic, moody environment but had a very positive experience. The ambiance is indeed dark, and the property is quite small, but I found its unique layout endearing. There are various spots and nooks you can get cozy in or sit on the side and wait for your order. The service is friendly and kind, and I did not feel rushed in ordering or in not knowing what I wanted. I did not partake in hookah and on the several times I have visited nobody else was. The chai tea was warm and delicious, and reminded me of a happy holiday. I will definitely be returning to this location when I am in the area. read more

This place is so cozy! It's upstairs in one of the historic buildings in the downtown mall. I felt dehydrated so they suggested a hibiscus tea (it was on special cold brewed that day) and I loved it! So refreshing and hydrating. I also ordered an autumn salad with sliced pears, candied pecans, sliced tomatoes, crumbled cheese, a homemade vinegarette and some slices of pita bread. So happy my friend and I were walking along the downtown mall looking for somewhere new to eat, and found this place! The vibe/aesthetic was great - I could see myself studying for exams there. The workers were all super nice as it was our first time, so we weren't sure what to get. I ended up getting their PMT (tomato mozzarella panini) with a side of Turkish lentil soup. It was all so so so good - especially the soup! In terms of drinks, I got the matcha cooler and it was so tasty/refreshing. I love matcha, but don't like when it's too sweet or not sweet enough, and this was perfect. My friend even liked it and has ever enjoyed matcha! Highly recommend for students! They are extremely picky on checking IDs, so even if you are way older than 18 but forgot to bring your ID, don't bother to go there. We went on Saturday night, and the place was pretty packed. Hence, I saw they asked some folks who weren't ordering anything to leave. I'm a huge fan of hookah, and as far as I know, this place is the only hookah bar in Charlottesville. Frankly, their decent hookahs and cozy design make it one of my favorite places in C'ville. Besides, we ordered falafel pita and some tea. I'm not a tea expert to comment on that, but it seemed pretty decent. falafel pita, which comes with a side, was pretty good too. Overall, we ended up paying $50, $17 for hookah, $10 for falafel, and the rest for tea. I must say the tea was kinda overpriced. Note: they have live music on Friday and Saturday nights. read more

It's a sad day when the homogeneity of all the new steel-and-white-plastic updated midcentury modern places becomes so dull that you actually welcome the clutter and patchouli-odor of a good '90s throwback like Twisted Branch. Remember when chai was still an exotic drink, and hookah was a revelation? This place does, because it is actually still 1997 in there. It's quite dark and decorated with New Age tchotckes and the smell is borderline nauseating, but even the New Age is actually Old-New Age: it's like crystal healing instead of essential oil diffusing. Maybe because it's so unapologetically passe, it's weirdly comforting and actually comfortable for reading and some work. Their masala chai is truly delicious - an actual milk chai and not a frothy latte thingy from a mix - and their tea menu is expansive without being expensive. The view overlooking the Downtown Mall from the window cushion seating is also great. I've grown so accustomed to the minimalist aesthetic of newer coffee shops that it's completely become my standard, but I do like coming here occasionally for a nostalgic reminder that cafe seating used to incorporate pillows and cushions, and you had to pay a penalty to use a credit card for an under-$5 purchase. read more

TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE!! I'm a student who just tried to find a nice quiet place to study. When I entered this establishment at the time it had many open tables. I chose my table and begin my studying. Shortly after an older lady with dark red hair approached me and asked if I was going to order something.. I said not at the moment. She left me alone but kept eyeing me consistently (very uncomfortable). After about five to ten minutes she came back and said... I need to purchase something in order to stay here and If I wanted to study somewhere I could go to the library. Her reasoning was that they're an establishment trying to pay rent. I get it but when you're kicking people out, that's not going to help you pay rent. I was in there for 15 minutes and had my worst customer experience ever. So bad that I never post reviews until now. As I was leaving I commented about all the open tables they had and she replied with "never come back here again". Believe me, I won't. I was already having a bad day following Russia's invasion of my home country of Ukraine and I didn't think my day could get any worse. This lady made sure it did. The name caught our eyes, as we are both tea lovers! The decor is really zen and the atmosphere was so relaxing, a wonderful way to unwind from the stress of our flights. The food was also wonderful! I got the salmon sandwich and I almost licked the plate clean! The tea was also perfect, and the teapot servings are made to serve four, so it is more than perfect for two tea lovers to split (or for one tea lover to drink by themselves, no judgement) And their deserts are just to die for. Hey y'know what this place kinda sucks. I'm all about the "idea" of a mystical tree-fort-tea-lounge, and while a great example of an idea, the Tea Bazaar is a pretty bad example of a business. Aesthetics aside, the service is pretty damn awful for a trendy watering hole. Granted, I haven't been here in a few months -- mostly because the last couple times I stopped by I ended up standing in a line for about 10 minutes before saying "Fuck it, there are way better/cooler/less expensive/more rewarding/less pretentious places to kill an hour and a half." Seriously, the place is consistently understaffed and the staff consistently sluggish, and in a college town it's not too too difficult to find a hookah and a pot of tea at a moment's notice. Great coffeeshops thrive on the flexibility of quick service for commuters and leg room for idlers, both of which can make up for mediocre coffee. Tea Bazaar offers quality tea and an ostensibly relaxing, social atmosphere -- while I don't know what kinda hippy dippy loser stops in here for a steamin' pot before work, I do know that there's a very large population who are looking for the atmosphere and the service, the tea being equivalent to a nice bowl of mixed nuts. The problem is that I've been there twice, and both times, they've suddenly had some terrible band start warming up, then a hipster comes by and starts demanding a cover charge if I want to stay in the same place and keep reading. While they're theoretically open until midnight, then, it seems like they're only *really* open until 9, at which point... chaos. Very interesting place. Caught me off guard - walked in to find a super hippie atmosphere, like I walked into a different world. I mean that in a good way! Different assortments of couches and pillows to sit on, very quirky, and I did manage to see some students in a cozy low-table sitting area..the kind you get to take your shoes off and sit for a while. They were doing work but I saw it as a very appropriate spot to enjoy your hookah in peace. So pros for this place is that it is so cozy you can catch up with your friends and not feel like they are going to kick you out any time soon. However, I didn't think they did their smoked salmon sandwich very well... I was expecting the salmon to be raw. So it wasn't raw, that's ok.... but then the cooked salmon didn't have much seasoning and broke apart into pieces in the sandwich. Since it was cooked, it didn't keep that smoky taste or that pure salmon flavor. I did try some of my friend's pesto sandwich which was much better, so maybe I will try that if I ever come back next! read more
