I went to a Salon in Salinas, and the lady ruined my hair. She gave me a horrible cut and lousy advice. While crying about my bad hair cut and dry scalp to the Innersense customer service person on their website, they recommended that I visit Twist. Although I had spent $300 on the bad haircut, this visit was worth the time and expense of a second visit to the salon. Here's why: When I arrived for my visit, Tyler, my stylist, began the appointment by asking me to describe all the products I use and how I care for my hair. He read the pre-consultation form I filled out and recalled much of what I wrote on the form. Then, he walked me to the washing bowl, and the first thing he did was hand me a mirror to see everything he was doing. I'm going to pause right here. I've been to three curly hair salons that claim they educate. No one has handed me a mirror at the washbowl!!!! Oh, and he had me touch my hair so I could see and feel the ratio of water to product that my hair should have. As I watched, Tyler explained: How much water to use with the product, Which product is suitable for my hair and why, What each product does for the hair, and The appropriate technique to ensure my hair is fully hydrated. And he integrated a lot of what we discussed into the lesson. It made me feel like what I was doing was good, and I just needed to tweak things a little bit to get better curls versus other salons where I have left feeling like I don't know how to do my hair or I have bad dry hair. This experience felt like I was watching a step-by-step video, except I could reach out and touch things. Tyler also made me feel good about my hair. He said that my hair was healthy, and I needed to spend more time with the conditioning process. How often do we go to salons where they make faces or say that our hair is damaged to sell us more products? He listened to me, asked many questions, and then styled my hair for my taste and preference. Then I walked away with a beautiful step-by-step list of everything we covered. I can't wait to make another appointment and revisit the salon. I know my hair cut is ugly, but that's not Twists fault, and my hair will grow back. A friend told me about a new curly hair salon called Twist when Tami first opened Twist, over a decade ago. Since Alameda is at least an hour drive from our house, I told my friend I'd go to Twist just once. Tami was incredible that first appt, over a decade ago, and I've been a loyal Twist client ever since! Tami not only cut my hair to enhance my curls, but patiently taught me how to take care of my curls at home. I was in my 50s that first appointment & all my life my curls had frustrated me! Once I started going to Twist, I've loved my curls! I also appreciate the skillful application of organic hair color! Despite the drive and expense, Twist is definitely worth it! I'm beyond thankful ! To top it off, Twist has a lovely environment, staff is warm & attentive, and there's a selection of beverages & snacks too . I went to Madusalon in the city for years, but when I moved to the East Bay, I found Twist on the Deva Curl website. I had my second cut with Hayat today and I want to cry. I'm growing out my curly hair and I asked for the stringy ends to be cleaned up. But she took off about 3-4 inches. I'm not even kidding! My hair which was just above my shoulder blades is now above my shoulders. So while I had stopped, straightening my hair and started embracing my curls, I now have to go back to straightening it to get any kind of length at all. I had also asked her to taper my hair around my face and what I got looks like bangs that are halfway grown out. Not tapered at all! And the unevenness of the cut?! Don't even get me started. I have random pieces that hang lower than the rest. So now I need to have someone cut the back to be even. It will take about 6-12 months to grow the length back so I can start all over again. I cannot recommend this salon enough. These stylists work with so many different hair types and textures and you'll feel completely at home the moment you walk in and are offered a drink. Ever since I started seeing Tami a few years ago, I have exclusively gone to her for cutting and coloring my dense, 3C-ish, curly-coily hair. She is very careful in making sure she helps you get the shape and look you're going for, and I have never walked out less than 100% satisfied with her work. Not to mention, she is a sweetheart and completely humble about her talent! Also, Tyler is wonderful at teaching you to style your hair. I've been doing my hair post-relaxers for years now, and walked out this past visit realizing why my routine wasn't producing the results I wanted. Following his tricks, I now can get 5-7 days out of my hair before re-styling! Not to mention, they use natural and clean products that also are versatile for different hair textures. I purchased a few this time around, and while they're pricy, a little goes a long way--even if you have thicker hair like me. Highly concentrated formulas. Absolutely worth it. I don't have any experience with the other stylists, but they also seem to get rave reviews and their work on their social media page looks epic. I had a wonderful experience at twist salon today! My hairstylist was Cherene she gave me a Deva cut and it was my first Deva cut and I was amazed. I have long curly hair and it was so grown out to become a tangled mess. I am also really tender headed so not really looking forward to someone running their fingers threw my hair but to my surprise this process was painless, and easy and I feel so much lighter having removed all those split ends. I've been told the initial cut takes some time so I was prepared. Cherene asked a lot of questions about how I style my hair. Anyea from twist curls is a magic worker and so helpful and supportive! I had had relaxed / texturized hair for 14 years; I had been trimming my own hair while I grew out my natural hair and finally went to Anyea and she really worked magic. I never knew I could love my hair this much. I've never had short hair before and was so cared, but she cut it in such a natural way and it's growing SO fast. The whole experience was great. She's a great communicator, really understands curls and mixed textures, she can speak to how damage effects the hair longterm and prescribes a recommended list of products and an incredible brush and how to use them. She's also open to questions as time goes on, especially if you're having issues post-visit. She uses innersense organic line which is wonderful and silicone / sulfate free and wow my curls are so happy. She's also open to me tailoring my hair routine to what works best for me and she doesn't overtrim or recommend more trims than necessary. The whole twist salon is very friendly and accommodating. I had my haircut with Anyea who did AMAZING work on my hair! I came in with dry, undefined, loose curls and she fixed them up to be shiny, bouncy, with the best definition I've seen on my hair. Aubrey was amazing! After doing heavy research on my journey for beautiful natural and healthy curly locks, I stumbled upon Twist Salon. Read lots of reviews and decided to make my appointment with Aubrey. I made an appointment online easily a couple weeks before and called to confirm the day before. Receptionist was friendly and reviewed what I scheduled to be done and how to prepare for the Devacut appointment. On the appointment day I arrived right on time and as soon as I walked in I was greeted with a warm welcome, offered a beverage and guided to the dressing room to change into a silky robe to keep my clothing free of hair during the process. Aubrey was finishing up with a client and by the time I changed, was ready for me. I sat down in her chair where she immediately complimented my curls (which any curl girl knows this makes you feel warm inside) and asked what I was looking for and how she could help. I was nervous as most are when they are going in for a cut or trim, especially at a new salon or with a new stylist. She took a closer look at my hair in its try (frizzy) naturally curly state and discussed an overall Devacut of just a trim with attention to enhancing its shape and working through getting rid of straighter pieces in front attributed from my blonde color and heat damage that remained. The trim/cut was quicker than I thought as she careful worked on each curl as it framed my face, my head and worked her way around curl by curl. Checking in with me as I watched the process, I felt completely comfortable watching Aubrey work. As I wanted to keep length she stopped and asked if there was any other areas that I may want more layering and made some final trims toward the face for shape. We discussed how on future appointments I can incorporate more layers as I feel comfortable to really sculpt the face and more volume or bangs. We headed to the wash bowl where she asked what products I used. In my curl hair journey I had fully embraced Devacurl products and use the decadence line with coconut styling cream and angelarc gel. These were the exact products she had planned to use on me as well (except ultra defining gel for more definition) and explained each product as she went the process. Given my hair type and the need for a deep condition to tame the frizz, she used Heaven n Hair as a deep condition along with One condition decadence and finger detangled my curls. This seemed to be the a longer process than the cut but was expected given the dryness of my hair's condition. Once my hair was detangled she added more water And asked me to flip my hair forward soaking wet. The conditioners weren't rinsed out, left in as leave-ins to tame frizz and keep hydrated. With my hair dripping to the floor she applied a generous amount of the styling cream followed by the same amount of gel to my soaking wet locks ensuring it well covered my hair from the back to the ends. Then it was time for scrunching in an upward motion to add more definition. A microfiber towel was used after just to lightly scrunch and absorb excess water. I sat back in her chair where we decided on a side part. As I tend to get lots of shrinkage In the back she added clips to curls before moving a hooded dryer over my hair. My hair dried a low heat setting for a decent amount of time. She rotated the druer a few times to concentrate on the back and sides. After my hair was 75-80% dry she removed the clips and we reviewed my hair to see if any additional trims needed to be made. She worked through the hair to cut a few more curls to help with shape as the curls fell into their place. Once I was done my hair felt healthy, light, flowy and happy. I have never felt like that after a hair cut and look forward to coming back for a color transformation with Aubrey soon too. Aubrey remained attentive through the entire process and I feel lucky to have found my new salon at Twist Alameda. I feel bad about writing a review but I do want to be honest. I was so excited to visit a curly hair salon for the first time and was looking forward to what I thought would also be one of the best cuts due to this. There was lots I appreciated about the salon. The vibe inside was welcoming and warm. I love that they use organic products and have great knowledge of the products. I loved the drink and snack options available. Unfortunately, my haircut was not what I was hoping for. I requested keeping my length and to add a little movement. I even shared how I've had bad experiences in the past with people cutting my hair too short. We did not discuss layers but I ended up with some very short layers and multiple inches off the ends resulting in loosing a lot of hair. It takes a long time for my fine, curly hair to grow so losing so much hair was upsetting, especially because I felt as though I was clear on my requests and had shared my worries.
