I really wanted to like Twist and I was looking for a natural hair color line that was low-toxic. I was ( and am still) looking for a local stylist that knows how to deliver expert results and cover the grey with no red undertones and avoid the hard line grow out. I consulted with both Tami, the owner, and Nicole who said she had 30 years of experience. After a couple of appointments Tami referred me to Nicole to correct the red results. Up until then we had decided on a temporary color because I was undecided about committing to the upkeep. After the second and last appointment with Tami I emailed her about the hard line and redness. She did not offer to correct it and I learned that without my consent she applied permanent color. After several appointments and hundreds of dollars later, I was left with everything I did NOT want- grey hair with a red hard line grown out and damaged hair.
Book your appointment asap! Wonderful experience here! Everyone is friendly and they really know how to cut curly hair. It's hard to get an appt sometimes but worth the wait. I didn't know how to handle my curls after years of straightening it and Nicole not only cut and styled it but walked me through products to use and how to use them. This is my second time coming to Twist Salon and the service Is phenomenal. This time I was paired with a new curl specialist, Hayat, who is amazing. She checked in with me about my current hair routine, wants and desires and to share knowledge moving forward to care for my hair. The whole process was relaxing and I appreciate the communication with my curl specialist along the way. Of course the salon is always well kept and maintained. They provide you drinks or a snack! Overall, I plan to continue coming back for my hair needs.

From the moment I walked in, I felt welcomed, comfortable, and super excited to be in good hands of all the curls inside this vibrant studio. I got a cut with Hayat, who was attentive to my past present and aspiring future curls. I appreciate how she walked me through everything she was doing. She was so professional and hospitable. I left with knowledge and a welcome gift to maintain my renewed hair. I'll surely be keeping ties to Twist! Happy curls - happy girl.
I went to a Salon in Salinas, and the lady ruined my hair. She gave me a horrible cut and lousy advice. While crying about my bad hair cut and dry scalp to the Innersense customer service person on their website, they recommended that I visit Twist. Although I had spent $300 on the bad haircut, this visit was worth the time and expense of a second visit to the salon. Here's why: When I arrived for my visit, Tyler, my stylist, began the appointment by asking me to describe all the products I use and how I care for my hair. He read the pre-consultation form I filled out and recalled much of what I wrote on the form. Then, he walked me to the washing bowl, and the first thing he did was hand me a mirror to see everything he was doing. I'm going to pause right here. I've been to three curly hair salons that claim they educate. No one has handed me a mirror at the washbowl!!!! Oh, and he had me touch my hair so I could see and feel the ratio of water to product that my hair should have. As I watched, Tyler explained: How much water to use with the product, Which product is suitable for my hair and why, What each product does for the hair, and The appropriate technique to ensure my hair is fully hydrated. And he integrated a lot of what we discussed into the lesson. It made me feel like what I was doing was good, and I just needed to tweak things a little bit to get better curls versus other salons where I have left feeling like I don't know how to do my hair or I have bad dry hair. This experience felt like I was watching a step-by-step video, except I could reach out and touch things. Tyler also made me feel good about my hair. He said that my hair was healthy, and I needed to spend more time with the conditioning process. How often do we go to salons where they make faces or say that our hair is damaged to sell us more products? He listened to me, asked many questions, and then styled my hair for my taste and preference. Then I walked away with a beautiful step-by-step list of everything we covered. I can't wait to make another appointment and revisit the salon. I know my hair cut is ugly, but that's not Twists fault, and my hair will grow back. But now I have a wonderful salon that I can trust with my naturally curly hair.
A friend told me about a new curly hair salon called Twist when Tami first opened Twist, over a decade ago. Since Alameda is at least an hour drive from our house, I told my friend I'd go to Twist just once. Tami was incredible that first appt, over a decade ago, and I've been a loyal Twist client ever since! Tami not only cut my hair to enhance my curls, but patiently taught me how to take care of my curls at home. I was in my 50s that first appointment & all my life my curls had frustrated me! Once I started going to Twist, I've loved my curls! I also appreciate the skillful application of organic hair color! Despite the drive and expense, Twist is definitely worth it! I'm beyond thankful ! To top it off, Twist has a lovely environment, staff is warm & attentive, and there's a selection of beverages & snacks too . On a side note, nearly a year ago I fractured my ankle & surgery was scheduled for the day after my Twist appointment. Also, my 70th birthday was 3 days later. Tami & Tyler went above & beyond to help me get into & out of the salon. Not an easy task! Kenya & Hayat were helpful too. I'll never forget their kindness & compassion! Twist is the absolute best! I love Tami. I have pretty curly hair and used to be a devoted Deva Curl user. I went to Madusalon in the city for years, but when I moved to the East Bay, I found Twist on the Deva Curl website. That was more than 4 years ago and I've been seeing Tami ever since, every 6 weeks or so. She cuts, colors and highlights my hair, and I have complete trust in her. When I felt like Deva Curl was drying out my hair and every other stylist I saw told me I was crazy, Tami believed me, agreed and introduced me to Innersense. It has made a world of difference! Even though I now live in Lafayette, I still drive to Alameda every 6 weeks (pre-COVID) for my Friday afternoon hair appointment with Tami. In addition to how much I love my hair, the whole experience is so enjoyable. The salon is so cozy and the complimentary beverages and wine are a big plus on a Friday afternoon! Conversation is always great with Tami, not forced, comfortable. And don't get me started on Tyler's head massages during a wash... TLDR... If you live in the East Bay and you have curly hair, this is THE salon for you.
I've had my haircut twice here now, once by Nicole and once by Hayat. I could not be happier with the outcome. I have a very fine curly hair that often frizzes or flattens and often my old haircut used to go against the curl patter. Nicole and Hayat both did a great job giving me the curly bob I wanted, they are both wonderful people, patient knowledgeable, and just gave great vibes all around. This last time Hayat let me record what she was doing so I can repeat what she did to my own hair. My haircut's so cute I've never felt better! 10 out of 10 would recommend!
Anyea was absolutely phenomenal! She is very well educated on curly hair and very passionate. She was very sweet throughout the whole process, always checked on me to see if I was comfortable, offered beverages, and educated me on how to better take care of my hair. She's also very patient and just has amazing skills with curly hair, I left the salon super happy with my curls. And I appreciate that she wants to help me with my curly hair journey that I started in Feb 2022. Overall, great experience and the ambiance is so peaceful and fun! I can't wait to come back to her to revive my curls that were once damaged.
I had a great experience at Twist Salon. Tami was really kind and listened to what I wanted. My hair was pretty long and I wanted it cut a little above the shoulders and she did just that. I brought in a picture to show what I was hoping for and she did not disappoint. During my wash, Tyler was really helpful in explaining what he was doing and the products he was using so that I could take that knowledge and apply it at home. I was so nervous about going with short hair but feel really great about it now. I've received so many compliments from friends and family. Thank you, Twist Salon!
After growing my hair out for many years I was ready for a big change. I booked an appt online with Tami & we cut off 15 inches!! This was my first curly hair cut & I am so happy I found Twist Salon! Tami is so warm & sweet, you can tell she is passionate about what she does. I love that she took the time to explain what each styling product did & how to apply to my hair specifically. Tyler was also great with my wash/condition, guiding me through how much product to use and how to apply it to my hair. The whole experience was a 10/10, I cannot recommend them enough & I can't wait to come back for my next cut!
Tami is my hair stylist and Nicole is my colorist. They both truly listen to what you want and help you realize it. Tami is an exceptional stylist and such a positive, encouraging spirit! She was able to guide my hair through many different stages of growth and at every stage created a style that I loved. I have a lot of hair, which with the wrong cut can look heavy and flat. Instead Tami is able to cut it with layers that not only lighten it visually, but texturally throughout the hair, which feels especially good on a hot day. As for Nicole -- she is an artist. I envisioned pinks, peachy pinks and caramel tones blended into my hair without hiding its natural medium brown base, and, well, I'll post a photo of what she created. Amazing. I also want to give a shout out to treatment specialist and curl coach Tyler, who always has excellent advice and knows exactly how to teach you to get the most from your waves or curls.

I've never really known how to style my curly hair, so a friend suggested getting educated at Twist. I made an appointment with Tyler and he did not disappoint! I learned how to properly wash, condition, and style for amazing results. I left the salon with the most hydrated and curliest hair I've ever had in my life. I went to twist salon for my first time doing color treatment EVER. Both my consultation and my actual appointment were super pleasant with Nicole. She listened to what I wanted and gave me options for what we could do to get there. The highlights turned out looking super natural and lightened my hair to give it a more "sun kissed" look. I was also given product recommendations and was walked through every step of the process (no real pressure to buy them, but I did end up purchasing). I highly recommend Twist (Nicole for color!). Highly recommend Twist for curly-cut!! 1) Stylist/ owner Tami gave me the exact cut I was looking for! I wanted to keep the length, but get rid of dead ends, and get a re-shape (no more triangle please). Tami did a fantastic job listening and delivering exactly what I asked for. They are clear that their cuts are not "Deva cuts" - many of the stylists do have Deva training, but Twist does their own style of hair cutting that feels more thorough than old-school devacut style. Trust me, it's worth trying! 2) They use Innersense products which are completely "clean" beauty products that deliver incredible curl results. The staff takes a lot of care applying the products while explaining to you the amount to use and exactly how to apply. They even write out instructions for you to take with you so you can duplicate the results at home! 3) Also the salon is really welcoming and clean. They give out such a wonderful vibe as a team, and the love for curls is so obvious!! read more

Hayat was AMAZING! This was my first curly-cut EVER and Hayat brought my curls to life! She's super professional, punctual, educational, and most importantly, relatable! Her step-by-step process and extreme knowledge made me feel so well-taken care of. This review is long overdue. Long story short, I love Tami!!! Every single time I go to her, she's able to turn my mess of curls into absolute curly-girl perfection. I feel like an absolute princess leaving Twist, and can't wait to go back. I love how they have tips and help you figure out which product is best for your specific hair type. To be honest, the first time going I was nervous being a Black woman and only having experience with salons mainly focused on Black clientele--but after trying it out for the first time about a year and a half ago, I won't go anywhere else. I had a wonderful experience at twist salon today! My hairstylist was Cherene she gave me a Deva cut and it was my first Deva cut and I was amazed. I have long curly hair and it was so grown out to become a tangled mess. I am also really tender headed so not really looking forward to someone running their fingers threw my hair but to my surprise this process was painless, and easy and I feel so much lighter having removed all those split ends. I've been told the initial cut takes some time so I was prepared. Cherene asked a lot of questions about how I style my hair. It felt like she was listening and considering all of this while she was cutting. All in all the appt was 2 hrs long, with a cut, shampoo w/ an amazing head massage, dry and style. The price...well within the budget! This will be part of my pamper time from here on out. read more

Anyea from twist curls is a magic worker and so helpful and supportive! I had had relaxed / texturized hair for 14 years; I had been trimming my own hair while I grew out my natural hair and finally went to Anyea and she really worked magic. I never knew I could love my hair this much. I've never had short hair before and was so cared, but she cut it in such a natural way and it's growing SO fast. The whole experience was great. She's a great communicator, really understands curls and mixed textures, she can speak to how damage effects the hair longterm and prescribes a recommended list of products and an incredible brush and how to use them. She's also open to questions as time goes on, especially if you're having issues post-visit. She uses innersense organic line which is wonderful and silicone / sulfate free and wow my curls are so happy. She's also open to me tailoring my hair routine to what works best for me and she doesn't overtrim or recommend more trims than necessary. I also follow her on instagram @emphasisanyea and her recommendations on her stories are beyond helpful as to techniques and how to use the products, etc. I feel like I'm consistently refining my journey. She also really loves celebrating her clients, which makes my heart feel so full. It's a great salon overall and I can tell all the stylists are wonderful, especially Anyea. read more

The whole twist salon is very friendly and accommodating. I had my haircut with Anyea who did AMAZING work on my hair! I came in with dry, undefined, loose curls and she fixed them up to be shiny, bouncy, with the best definition I've seen on my hair. She really listened to my concerns and requests and walked me through every step on how to take care of my hair moving forward. She allowed me to feel the products in my hair to get a sense of what it should be like when I'm styling it myself at home. After my appointment, she was even nice enough to write out all the products we used and how to use them and in what order. Overall I had a great experience at Twist Salon and with Anyea! I'm looking forward to returning and seeing how my curls will improve over time with non-toxic products and regular cuts. Thank you again P.S. Aubrey was amazing! After doing heavy research on my journey for beautiful natural and healthy curly locks, I stumbled upon Twist Salon. Read lots of reviews and decided to make my appointment with Aubrey. I made an appointment online easily a couple weeks before and called to confirm the day before. Receptionist was friendly and reviewed what I scheduled to be done and how to prepare for the Devacut appointment. On the appointment day I arrived right on time and as soon as I walked in I was greeted with a warm welcome, offered a beverage and guided to the dressing room to change into a silky robe to keep my clothing free of hair during the process. Aubrey was finishing up with a client and by the time I changed, was ready for me. I sat down in her chair where she immediately complimented my curls (which any curl girl knows this makes you feel warm inside) and asked what I was looking for and how she could help. I was nervous as most are when they are going in for a cut or trim, especially at a new salon or with a new stylist. She took a closer look at my hair in its try (frizzy) naturally curly state and discussed an overall Devacut of just a trim with attention to enhancing its shape and working through getting rid of straighter pieces in front attributed from my blonde color and heat damage that remained. The trim/cut was quicker than I thought as she careful worked on each curl as it framed my face, my head and worked her way around curl by curl. Checking in with me as I watched the process, I felt completely comfortable watching Aubrey work. As I wanted to keep length she stopped and asked if there was any other areas that I may want more layering and made some final trims toward the face for shape. We discussed how on future appointments I can incorporate more layers as I feel comfortable to really sculpt the face and more volume or bangs. We headed to the wash bowl where she asked what products I used. In my curl hair journey I had fully embraced Devacurl products and use the decadence line with coconut styling cream and angelarc gel. These were the exact products she had planned to use on me as well (except ultra defining gel for more definition) and explained each product as she went the process. Given my hair type and the need for a deep condition to tame the frizz, she used Heaven n Hair as a deep condition along with One condition decadence and finger detangled my curls. This seemed to be the a longer process than the cut but was expected given the dryness of my hair's condition. Once my hair was detangled she added more water And asked me to flip my hair forward soaking wet. The conditioners weren't rinsed out, left in as leave-ins to tame frizz and keep hydrated. With my hair dripping to the floor she applied a generous amount of the styling cream followed by the same amount of gel to my soaking wet locks ensuring it well covered my hair from the back to the ends. Then it was time for scrunching in an upward motion to add more definition. A microfiber towel was used after just to lightly scrunch and absorb excess water. I sat back in her chair where we decided on a side part. As I tend to get lots of shrinkage In the back she added clips to curls before moving a hooded dryer over my hair. My hair dried a low heat setting for a decent amount of time. She rotated the druer a few times to concentrate on the back and sides. After my hair was 75-80% dry she removed the clips and we reviewed my hair to see if any additional trims needed to be made. She worked through the hair to cut a few more curls to help with shape as the curls fell into their place. Once I was done my hair felt healthy, light, flowy and happy. I have never felt like that after a hair cut and look forward to coming back for a color transformation with Aubrey soon too. Aubrey remained attentive through the entire process and I feel lucky to have found my new salon at Twist Alameda. I visited Twist Salon in March 2016 after reading the reviews on yelp. I have been struggling for years to find a salon that specializes in cutting curly hair as well as African American curly hair. I was very reluctant to try this salon, yet I had a lot of dead ends and hair to spare so I figured I'd give it a try. My stylist was Kasha and she gave me a Devacut. This process was quite lengthy and I was in the salon a good 2 1/2 - 3 hours but Kasha warned me about the time length when I made the appointment. Kasha was very knowledgeable of curly hair and gave me tips along the way of how to care for my natural curls as well as asked me about my hair regimen and gave me advice on changes to make to my advantage. Kasha took me through the entire process from beginning to end of how to wash and style my hair after she did the cut. She gave me a hand mirror to watch he lather, rinse, and ribbon my curls with the conditioning and styling products by Devacurls. I am enjoying the end results of my cut and would visit again in the future. A few tips & warnings: The devacuts are for people who wear their hair in wash and go's. I prefer to wear mine in twist and braid outs. So your cut may look a little different after the hair is stretched or braided so play around with it a little. Twist salon believes in using Devacurl products. I think they are ok but I don't like the smell and they are pricey. Lastly if I go again I will ask for Kasha and I will ask her to use a little less product on my hair. read more

Do they cut kids hair. I have a 3 year old?
We work with all ages! Although we do not have different rates due to gender or age. A haircut is a haircut at our salon.
