We love the Twilite Motel. It's close enough to Bar Harbor without being so close that you have to deal with the crowds and claustrophobia. Something else is the owner is an absolute gentleman whose friendliness should be bottled. Considering how close it is to the main drag, the price is beyond fair. Place itself is clean and has a very charming coffee and tea room. I look forward to going back. read more

Charming, comfortable spot. As a previous reviewer said, if you've watched too many horror movies the Twilite might look a little "murder-ey" but its vintage look is part of its charm. The proprietors couldnt have been any nicer and everything was clean and worked. Quiet but a short drive from the town center. We got a great night"s rest. read more

The rooms are super clean and kind of had a 'new' building feel to them even though the place looks straight out of the 50's. Staff is really friendly. Rates are great. Location is great. If you are coming up to visit Acadia or just happen to need a stopping point on a long trip up Rt. 1...this is a fantastic place to stop. The reviewers that said this place is like a spare room at your grandma's house...I totally agree, but way cleaner than my grandma's and without the moth ball smell (sorry Nanny.) read more

Tripadvisor users had this rated pretty high - so I thought I'd add it to yelp. I came across this while planning a low budget trip to Acadia National Park. It's a small independent motel on a roadside about 30 minutes before the park/Bar Harbor. Here's the brief rundown: The technical execution of this place is perfect - given the location and market the owners have a perfect product at a perfect price point. Rooms are clean - no drama with service (overly helpful in fact - I love Maine), decent fresh breakfast. I saw some guys with laptops- not sure if there is wi-fi. Here's the yuppie shoulder shrugs that may be inconveniences: -Front desk opens at 7am - just leave and call to request your receipt be mailed if you take off before then. -It really reminded us of a very clean spare room at your Grandma's house -nothing wrong with that - but you're not walking into the Times Square Hilton. -Location - it really isn't that convenient to the park/bar harbor/nightlife. In summary: For your money's worth - this place is a good buy (about ~$100 night in peak season). Another plus is that they have Orbitz booking - which puts them ahead of the other 2 dozen similar Mom-n-pop's....however for convenience next time we'll probably try to stay closer to the park at the other budget motels that were advertising $60-$80 with about 50% vacancy that weekend (we made the 30 minute drive 5 times during our 3 day stay). Or take a look at the pricey Holiday Inn or othersin bar Harbor. The restaurants in Ellsworth can't be compared to Bar Harbor - as the tourist dollars are supporting the island - and the town is just a local economy with limited resources. I don't recommend the Maine Mexican joint - points for creativity though. If you like to stay away from the crowds and want a quaint clean place - book this. (ps - if you head to Acadia you really need to book a 8AM trip on the lobster boat Lulu. There's also a local winery in Wintersport, and a cool span bridge in Bucksport) read more

What a great deal! My family and I stayed overnight at the Twilite after driving up Route 1 and going to Acadia NP the next day. It was much cheaper than anywhere else in the area. We arrived at the hotel around 7:30PM, and the very friendly woman told us all about the property and the town of Ellsworth, giving us maps and coupons to restaurants. The rooms were really clean, with a small TV on the bureau and a tiny shower and tub in the bathroom (so cute!). The rooms were not as tricked-out as a visitor might find in a chain--no hairdryer, no iron, etc.--but who cares? I slept so soundly on the firm mattress and awoke fully rested and ready for our Acadia day. The room rate includes free breakfast, with cereals, danish, toast, OJ, strong coffee, and--best of all--homemade blueberry muffins that are delicious, obviously not the same mass-produced breakfast stuff at Holiday Inn and other big chains. I would certainly stay here again. I only wish that the motel were closer to the park (it's 18 miles away). I recommend the Twilite to anyone visiting the area. For low rates, friendly service, clean and comfortable rooms, tasty breakfast, stay here! read more

This perfect motel was perfect. The first reviewer said that it feels like a spare room at your grandma's house, and that's completely right. We were there in April, the dead of the off-season, and the room came to something like $55. A great spot to hear the peepers on that early-spring night. A sliding door to the bathroom. A small, personal deck with chairs where you can watch the moon rise over the trees and the highways. And some stick-woods in back where you can wander in the morning fog for a little while. It was a long vacation, and the Twilite Motel was my favorite place we stayed. read more

Let me start by saying I'm super fussy about where I stay. Someone else said when they pulled in they thought it looked like a place to get murdered. I agree and thought the same thing but was willing to see if I could survive until the end of the movie. He also said it was a great place to stay and I agree with that, too. I always check everything out when I get to a hotel room. Pull the sheets back, pull the mattress up to do a bed bug check, look at the shower, etc. This is one of the cleanest rooms I've ever been in. They must dust and clean every inch. I've been in plenty of 4-5 star hotels that aren't as thoroughly cleaned. The beds are on the firm side. The pillows are thin. The room is small but cozy, not cramped. Really does look like a room in grandma's upstairs if she had redone it circa 1981. Or a cabin. Plus the lampshades have beaded fringe! What more could you want for this price? The owners seem very pleasant. Would definitely stay here again. read more

Stayed here a few years ago (two separate nights, a week apart--traveling on business). On the phone to make reservations, I offhandedly mentioned to the owner that that night would be my anniversary. Well, we arrived, checked in, were delighted with the friendly way we were greeted...and made our way to the room. Lo and behold, the owners had left us a very sweet anniversary card and a small gift!! Talk about Customer Service...just listening, going above and beyond. That made us feel incredibly valued!! Turns out they'd upgraded our room to one of the deluxe rooms at no extra charge, because it was our anniversary. :-) Had a very good stay that night, and on our return the following week we were again welcomed as if we were family, and although we weren't upgraded, the second room we stayed in was just as nice as the deluxe room, and we had another pleasant stay. My husband bought one of the Twilite Motel ceramic mugs. To this day, about six years after our stay, every time he uses this mug (almost daily!!), we think of our trips and our two stays, and how special they made us feel. I learned a lot from that (being in the service industry as well--magician/entertainer), and REALLY applaud the Twilite Motel for their absolutely **magical** business model. read more

The motel was tired looking. I couldn't understand how it got a 4 out of 5 star rating on Hotels.com. Motel staff was rude. Only place I walked away from without staying. I cancelled my reservation and I couldn't be happier at better accommodations. read more

Stayed here last year and I neglected to post. Having just been to Ellsworth this past week and passing by the Twilite - it really brought back fond memories. We were on motorcycles last year and we're rained in here for the day. Very comfortable, clean, safe and staff was exceptional. Glad an old place like this is still fully operational. It's like stepping back into 1967 - but that's how I remember Maine as a kid. Just a few hotels like this one back in the day - today, too many tourists and Starbucks !! read more

The owners are friendly and have information for things to do on a rainy day - which helped for the one rainy day we had. Within 30 min of Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor. Stayed here on a bike trip to Acadia and found the location great as it was away from the tourist commotion but only a mile from downtown Ellsworth. My husband and I and our 11 year old son stayed here recently. This is a mom-and-pop establishment, which at first we thought was a nice thing. The place was clean enough and no more uncomfortable than any other budget motel. We ran into a problem the last night we were there. We had to get up early Sunday morning for a flight home. We went to bed early, as we had to drive over 3 hours to the airport the next morning. In the middle of the night, the smoke alarm went off loudly. We smelled no smoke and could not figure out what the problem was. Keep in mind this podunk little place has no front desk staff after 10 pm, so we did not know what to do. We had not been told who to call in the event of an after-hours emergency, and it is not posted in the room. My husband tried pressing a button to reset it and we went back to bed. It went off again a short time later, repeatedly, and would not stop. There was no smoke in the room that we could smell, so we figured the unit was malfunctioning. We desperately needed to get back to sleep so we could get up for our flight, so my husband removed the alarm from the wall to get it to stop. After that, we were finally able to sleep the rest of the night. In the morning, my husband told the female proprietor before we checked out that the smoke alarm had malfunctioned in the night. Apparently, she did not mention this to her husband. As we were driving to catch our plane, several hours after leaving the motel, we get a call from the husband saying that he was charging us $250 for "smoking in the room" - which we DID NOT DO and damaging the smoke detector. We tried to explain what had happened, but he would not hear our side of the story and belligerently stuck to this outrageous extra fee - when really, he should have been apologetic about the terrible night's sleep we got! On top of that, he charged our card TWICE for the same thing, and we are out $500 - FIVE HUNDRED DOLLARS - for what was at worst a misunderstanding. We have no way to prove a negative, that we didn't smoke in the room, and that leaves us completely vulnerable. As a result, we will NEVER stay in a non-chain motel or hotel again, where at least there is front desk staff that can be called and a corporate office that can be appealed to if we have a problem. It's sad that mom-and-pop places cannot be trusted to do the right thing by their guests. EDIT: UPDATE - I had to call Ellsworth Maine Police Department for assistance. A detective went out to review the situation. We are now only being charged $50. At least that is less money stolen from us. A good hotel owner who cared about his guests would have given us at least that much of a refund for the wretched night's sleep we got from his malfunctioning equipment. I will still tell everyone I know NOT to stay in this motel, ever. read more

I am unsure why this was rated so highly. There are so many problems with this property that I feel the reviews do not represent the property. Although the host is friendly, this does not make up for the one star or less offering. The delux rooms offer a make-shift vanity in the room, the bath tub is mint green, and the flowered bedspreads are not inviting. This is at least 30 min. To Arcadia. Reserve only one night because regardless of circumstance will the owner will not your money, even with a 24 hour notice. The breakfast was fine but cannot make up for the accommodations. Many people could not pick up the Internet (end rooms). Please be advised and I suggest you look elsewhere. read more
