Real talk: I do not like cupcakes…read more I know, I know, I'm like the culinary scrooge of Edinburgh. I do not like them in a box. I do not like them with a fox. (Now i'm just meshing childhood villains together... you get my point). I do not like cupcakes. USUALLY. In fact, I don't think I would have wandered into Cuckoos, had it not been for the "distracted by shiny objects" side of my personality. I knew it had great reviews, but it wasn't really on my radar until I saw their display cake and the PRETTIEST cupcakes that ever there were. So I went in and against my better judgement - I bought a cupcake. Real talk revised: I do not like cupcakes UNLESS they're from Cuckoos. Holy heck Batman, that's a fine cupcake! I went with the Sticky Toffee one, because since moving here, I realize that anything Sticky Toffee is going to be damn good and damn good it was. The icing was a bit much for me - i've never been a big icing gal, but everything under that layer was pure joy. Pure. Cupcake. Joy. Not to mention, they are basically a instagrammers dream... if you remember to take a picture before inhaling the thing, the staff are the sweetest and they offer gluten free options, online ordering and the minor detail that won me over: the boxes have individual holes for each cupcake, so when you're balancing two boxes on your way to a 9am meeting, you don't end up with smushed cupcakes upon arrival. They obviously think this stuff through and it shows in everything they do. I'm holding that five star for a sit in experience but overall, this place changed my mind on what I previously thought was overdone trend baking. Definitely worth popping your head in the door.

Well she wasn't wrong. We arrived about 2pm on a Saturday and it was really busy. We were welcomed by the lovely friendly staff and told we would probably need to wait 5 mins for a table. We made good use of our waiting time looking at the menu. So many tasty choices, perfect place for breakfast or brunch as loads of breakfast choices. We soon got our seats and staff quickly cleaned the table for us. We ordered chilli nachos and drinks. Whilst we waited we chatted and checked out the decor, lots of lovely nik naks and pictures. My fav things were the stunning bright plastic chandeliers and the bird cage lamp shades (check out my photos) The food arrived, the nachos came in a bowl with sour cream, guacamole, jalapeños, salsa and a good amount of cheese. The salsa and guacamole were fresh and homemade and we're full of taste. We then shared cakes, we had a blueberry loaf and Victoria sponge. Both were homemade and really tasty. I sat at a little table next to the window and was brought my order. The cinnamon bun was really soft and had a lovely flavor. The chai was sweet and didn't have too much spice but I enjoyed it! Overall the vibe of the cafe itself is really cute and they have plenty of baked goods, hot and cold beverages, and savory options to appeal to a reasonable palate. I've been back a couple more times since this occasion to try more baked goods and get a hot chocolate! I've always been very pleased by my experience and will continue to return!

Cinnamon rolls come in so many different ways, that while they weren't my favorite, they might be yours so definitely check them out! The Bearded Baker has great iced Americano and Lattes, and I appreciate that they offer oat milk! (Both iced and alternative milk have their own individual upcharges, FYI). I adored the lime, poppyseed, and blueberry roulade! It was gone before the soup and toastie sandwich arrived. Crispy on the outside and so very soft and tasty on the inside. The cookie pie was impressive, but I honestly liked the roulade so much better. The soup today was broccoli and it was delicious! I had a ham and cheese sandwich lightly grilled in a panini press. Mom had a chorizo sandwich. The ladies at the bakery were lovely! Friendly happy folk always make food taste better! The bakery was quiet and not busy at 12:30 pm. It wasn't empty, just not busy. My very first time I came I tried a vegan cinnamon bun. It was warm, soft, and had that sweet caramelization from the sugar on the bun. It was soooo good. After that, I kept coming back about once a week to grab a treat and sometimes a drink. Everything I've tried has been so delicious and the staff is always very kind. If you follow them on Instagram they even sometimes release what goods are in the shop since they switch it up! Tasty Buns definitely became a go to of mine and I think there is truly something for anyone with a sweet tooth!

When at a farmer's market, I can't help but want to try food that is raised locally. When at a pub, I am always drawn to the most interesting sounding and tasting drink brewed as local as possible. With this in mind, when I visit an independent coffee shop, I either want to try what THEY are known for (or what they want to be known for) and/or I feel like the atmosphere, decor and ambience should be something not offered at another shop or cafe nearby and should definitely be different than what I feel when walking into chain coffee shops and trying their universally accepted beverages. I discovered Coffee Angel because it is next to a few other locally established legends--- Blue Bear, Earthy, and Cuckoo's Bakery. Recently, with a few minutes to spare on our parking, the wife and I decided to stop in and get a hot drink before hitting the road back to Perth. The cafe looks appealing and chic from the outside. However, inside, it looks much like many other cafes, if even a bit worn around the edges. As a lover of all things chai, I decided to try the tempting Honey and Vanilla Chai Latte. As tempting as it sounded, it didn't actually live up to my expectations as it tasted more like honey and vanilla than anything like chai. We had to wait a bit longer as they initially made my wife's drink with milk rather than soya. I have to admit two things. 1) I have only visited Coffee Angel once and 2) I don't like coffee, but have an extraordinary affinity for other hot drinks. Bearing these two things in mind, I'm interested to try Coffee Angel again in the future because of one mediocre experience, which has left me undecided. And I would need to try something other than Honey and Vanilla Chai Latte, as well as sampling one of the baked goodies. But to be honest, considering it's neighbours, I'm not really sure when my next visit will actually be.
