Not a bad spot for happy hour in the city. I want to give this place a 3.5. I will say their happy hour is VERY poorly advertised. There is no happy hour menu and even having it explained is confusing. Essentially it boils down to $2 off beers and $6 well drinks. They do not have prices on their beers which is a huge pet peeve of mine. So my "happy hour" beer still ended up costing $9. To me it seems sneaky but some places do it, I'm not a huge fan. If you come here, come during happy hour and stick to well drinks. read more

Turnmill is a block away from my NY office, and i often find myself alone, ponied up at the bar, eating and drinking at the end of an excruciatingly long day. And Turnmill makes me comfortable with that, with a solid tap list, great bar food (wings and soft bake pretzels are killer, above average burger as well) in a comfortable environment that is never too crowded, but not dead either. Game on that you are interested in vegging out to? Back bar plays the game call and has a couple of massive screens. Happy hour 12-7 every day- it's the best!! You can choose from beers, wines, and ciders plus a few mixed drinks at 4-6$ which is unbeatable for city prices. Came with a group on a weekend. Turnmill is the bomb dot com. My first shout-out goes to the DJ whose awesome playlist may as well have been the "Greatest Hits of Kathy's Middle and High School Dances." I think I danced to literally every single song that night. Speaking of which, there IS space to dance at the back of the bar! Which brings me to my next shout-out, to the crowd at this bar who knows how to have fun with strangers and isn't afraid to bust a few moves. For such a large space, Turnmill has an intimate feeling to it. Complete with a candlelit setting and music not blaring out your eardrums, the warm welcome is mainly due to, without a doubt, the wonderful bartenders working there. Although I promptly closed my tab after buying one round of drinks, the bartender remained attentive and took the time to chat with us. I noticed she talked with all the customers at the bar; definitely a fresh change of pace of some bars where the bartenders distance themselves from guests. What was most impressive was the bartender's knowledge of the beers on draft. Too many times bartenders describe a beer just by its color; the bartender here was able to talk about the taste of each one and its style, allowing us to find drinks that suit our palette. The service here is atrocious. The waitress got 50% of our order correct and the other 50% was forgotten or incorrect. Asked for refills of water 3/4 times during the time span of one NFL game. Waited for our other drinks for 15-20 minutes which was a simple beer pour, nothing complicated. Just no sense of urgency or awareness. Turnmill has been a favorite among my friends for a few years. It's a great sports bar in that it's often not too crowded, you can usually get a seat even on a football Sunday, they have a ton of space and they have a great back area that you can reserve. They have a decent beer list as well as other drinks. The food used to be fantastic bar food - including fresh panko-breaded chicken fingers that we all raved about. However, they must have recently changed chefs because we went today and the food was absolutely horrible - the chicken fingers were small and very likely defrosted from frozen. We even sent them back to cook them more. The fries were greasy. The grilled cheese wasn't fully melted in the middle. The wings were pretty good however. Had high hopes for this place, but it was a complete disappointment. The service is one of the worst I have ever had in a New York City "sports" bar (if you even want to call it that). A couple of out-of-town colleagues were visiting and a few of us decided to go here for happy hour since it's close to the office. When we walked in, nobody greeted us and we had no idea who worked there and who didn't. Their host/hostess table is in the back of the bar, which is very weird. After a few minutes of standing around aimlessly, not sure where to sit or who to talk to, I walked to the end of the bar and found someone. When I asked what we should do, he said "Oh, you can sit wherever - you can sit in that first booth." When I asked if the table has service or if we'd have to order at the bar (and either is fine), this guy's response was "Oh, I don't know...if she (the waitress) decides to come take your order then she will, if not, you can order at the bar." What does that even mean?! Just terrible service and attitude. So we all sat down in the booth and after about 10-15min of looking around, we just decided to order at the bar. When we ordered, the bartender would continue to forget the drinks - and there were only 5 of us, all ordering beers. She'd give me 3 or 4 of the beers and I would go drop them off at the table, and then I'd walk back and she'd be attending other customers - completely forgetting the 5th beer. We finally got around to ordering food, which actually came out pretty fast, but they didn't have a couple of the things on the menu. Their menu is still pretty small, so that was a shock. Oh, and DO NOT waste your money on the guacamole. For $12, they gave us a plate with chips, an extremely small bowl of guacamole that tasted terrible, and their "salsa" (which was essentially just pico de gallo). The guac had no flavor and there was enough for maybe 5-10 chips only. Don't think I'll ever be back at Turnmill. I've heard great things and was very excited to grab drinks/dinner here, but my experience was not a good one and I won't be back. read more

This is far and away the coolest bar in the New York! It's higher end, without being snooty and Divey without being a dump. The bartenders are awesome and one particular one that we had was amazing. Jackie was so sweet and so attentive. She makes the best bloody mary you've ever had!!! The crowd was also awesome with a good mix of people from young and professional to older and retired. Considering we're in NY, everyone was super friendly and willing to chat. The coolest thing about this bar, which I think is underrated in most places but most definitely in this bar, is its design. I LOVE how this bar looks. The old wood that is on the walls gives this place such a cool vibe and the table and chairs themselves are very unique. Decided to have a surprise birthday party for my husband here after a friend recommended it. I had never been here and did not go until the night of the party. Having not been there at all could have been nerve racking but the staff, especially Tom, was amazing at coordinating details with me and being accommodating to all the little details I wanted to figure out before hand. The atmosphere of the bar is perfect for a get together - big or small. The drinks and food were great and reasonably priced. The beer and drink selection is standard and adequate. It can be quite loud despite it being fairly empty. I came here with a few friends on a Friday night and it was pretty empty, surprising. I honestly have never been here on a Saturday night, but I really like coming here on Sunday afternoons to watch sports since it doesn't get overcrowded or crowded at all for that matter. They don't have as many TVs as a BBW, but they're all over the place so you really can't watch from a bad angle. If you're into craft beer or whiskey they've got a relatively huge selection. Can't comment on the beer though because I'm not a beer drinker, but I do like their whiskey selection. The staff is friendly, and you're really quick to get served. This was a pleasant surprise for me. I needed to reserve a space for my birthday party last week and was looking for a spot in this neighborhood which would fit a not excessive number of friends. Thankfully, Peggy was able to hook me up with a nice spot in the middle of the bar for a few hours this past Monday. While, like almost every other "sports" bar, Turnmill is too loud for my taste, I was able to communicate with friends for most of the evening, which is not always the case. I also have to give kudos to our servers, who were prompt and genial throughout the evening. The culinary highlight of the year for me happened when they wheeled out their gigantic pretzel, along with a cup of scorching hot mustard, which cleared out my sinuses temporarily. Great for meeting friends. Came here with about 10 friends just to hang out. Probably not the best date spot as the music can be loud at times, but you could still pull it off for a drink or two. Tried the chicken panini which was pretty decent as well as the hummus sampler. The nachos were nothing spectacular nor were the house made waffle chips, but ok to munch on. Also, good spot to throw an event / birthday party as there is a somewhat blocked off space in the back. Only complaint is waiting longer I'd like for the waitress for new drinks, but nothing terrible. Went here on a Thursday after work and loved it. Interior decor is clean and a mixture of modern/old pub, unsure if that makes sense but its nice. A lot of TV's so you can easily see whatever sports are on TV from anywhere in the bar. We walked in and sat in one of the booths on the side and the waitress was very attentive. Originally just came for drinks, stayed long enough to order some food. The giant pretzel is certainly GIANT, it comes on a hook. Cool presentation. Also had the spinach & artichoke dip, which worked great with the pretzel for dipping it into. If you are looking for a place for after work drinks, low key drinking, and to catch a game this seems like the spot. Will definitely be back. read more

UPDATE: I'm adding a third star because the manager contacted me after I posted this review, and was very nice, apologized, refunded my tab, and took other measures that I appreciated. I will chalk this up to a bad day and give them another try. ORIGINAL REVIEW: If you read the reviews about this place, a theme emerges: decent bar in general, but some shady experiences with staff. Unfortunately, that was my recent experience here. It was my first time here, and because I'm an adult who's twice the legal age, I didn't exactly look for a bouncer before I walked in. But instead of saying hey big man, can I see your ID like a normal adult would, the bouncer asked me if I worked there. Being dressed nothing like wait staff, obviously I was confused by the question, which led to a condescending remark and a request for ID. Great way for the front of your house to make a first impression. Lest I thought I was imagining the experience, he actually chased my friend down at the bar after she arrived, asked her the same question, and really creeped her out in doing so. It's one thing to be bad at your job. It's another thing to creep out your customers. The beers available here were okay but not a spectacular list, and the bartenders were okay, but I like bars that put me in a good mood -- not creep me out. Probably won't be back. Terrible waitress, terrible service and terrible food. From the yelp reviews me and my buddies decided to drop in watch some football and enjoy some beer and food. We were seated right away as it was mid afternoon but didn't see our waiter for 10 minutes. Another 5 or more we got our beers. The lack of attention carried on and we continually waved her down. We ordered 2 apps and our main courses which all came out together, over crowding the tiny table. The chicken panini that I ordered was pressed bread, 1 small slice of chicken, 3 spinach leaves and 2 pieces of red pepper. To make matters worse the waitress, who had a great disappearing act, took it upon herself to write "25%" at the top of the check, a gesture the four of us laughed at. My friends and I wandered into this bar on new year's eve after having indian food for dinner. We were looking for a chill place with no cover or overpriced drinks for the night. This place wasn't too packed and had a nice cozy vibe. Friendly staff. The music was a nice mix of 80s, 90s and new music. They have a really great selection of beers on tap. They handed out fun new year's party favors and champagne toast. They had the countdown live on tv. This was the exact experience we were looking for this year.
