Lived in area over 50 years & have never dined here. Friend & I went last night. What a pleasant surprise. Nice & bright with a welcoming entrance. We were immediately seated by our outstanding server. She was pleasant and very friendly. She gave us advice on entrees which we took advantage of. Solid 3 stars I love that they've been here forever. There's an awesome black and white photo of their original stand. Fish is fresh. Coleslaw was good. Baked potato and sweet potato fries very good. Turk's Seafood Restaurant is a family-owned seafood restaurant that opened in West Haven, Connecticut in 1939. From the 1870s to 1966, West Haven's shoreline was home to Savin Rock Amusement Park. Often referred to as "Connecticut's Coney Island", the entire Savin Rock area became well-known as a summer resort community complete with amusement rides, hotels, gardens, a fountain, a bandstand, a zoo, horse races, a movie theater, trolley tracks, and plenty of seafood and hotdog restaurants. One of the original seafood restaurants to open during the glory days of Savin Rock was Turk's. Since 1939, they have continuously been serving up fresh seafood dishes, crinkle cut French fries, onion rings, hamburgers, and split hotdogs (locally produced by Hummel Brothers Quality Meat Products in New Haven). Legend has it that 'split frankfurters' were invented at nearby Jimmie's Restaurant because they cooked faster and could quickly be given to trolley passengers who wanted to grab a quick bite before the trolley departed. Various accidental fires, the Great Hurricane of 1938, and the economic and residential development of the 1960s were what caused the decline and closure of Savin Rock. Although the amusements and most of the old restaurants are long gone, Turk's is still serving up quality food all these years later. Since I work in West Haven, I have eaten at Turk's a number of times over the years. I recently stopped in with some co-workers during our lunch break. One of my co-workers ordered a classic split Hummel Hotdog while the other ordered a Grilled Cheese with Tomato and a side of Crinkle Cut Fries. For myself, I went with Fried Clam Strips with a side of Crinkle Cut Fries. They really hit the spot. Went here for the first time Sunday evening. I had the fish and chips with sweet potato fries. It looked a bit different than I'm used to, it was chunks of fish instead of full pieces. It was really good and fresh with a lighter but nice tasting batter. The fries were good too and the meal was a good portion. Prices are about typical I'd say. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The place looks a bit worn but not terribly so. Inside is very clean. Parking looks pretty ample. Great setting, right across from the beach. On a beautiful sunny 60° day there was only one place to go for lunch along the beach. I chose this place because as a teenager, I remembered a Seafood Restaurant which was a consistent, fresh and great place to have scallops and onion rings! Just out of nostalgia, I decided to take a walk back in time and try Turks for lunch. I even recognized one of the original waitresses there who is still at the top of her game. Turks has been in operation since 1939 and owned by the Ramadan brothers. Our seafood was exceptionally fresh and made to order. My wife and I went back to Turk's after not being there for a couple years and were pleasantly surprised! We had ordered the fish & chips and it was very good! The fish was cooked to perfection and the fries were excellent and not greasy. The slaw was also very good! The service was great as well! Our past couple excursions to Turk's a few years ago was not up to our expectations! They really turned it around! The restaurant was updated with new paint, floors and booths! It looks great! My sister and I ate here today and really enjoyed it. The restaurant is spacious, bright and clean and nicely decorated. Our waitress was wonderful. We both had fish and chips and coleslaw. Everything was so fresh and delicious and we really liked the tartar sauce. It's the best we've had at a restaurant yet. There was a nice selection of desserts available. If you are looking for a place that has more ambiance than good food, Turk's is probably not for you. If you are looking for sea food done correctly and at a reasonable price, this is the place. Nothing fancy, the emphasis is on the food! If you want fancy and expensive, Shell&Bones in New Haven will be happy to change you double or triple and the selection for seafood is practically nonexistent. Lots of reviewers here criticizing the decor, but they must have renovated, because it was quite charming. The service workers were friendly. The food was somewhat overpriced. I had a fried soft-shell crab, which was about $15, and my wife has the "Skipper's Sea Food Combination," which was a plate of fried clams, shrimp, scallops and cod which came with fries and coleslaw, for about $32. The portions were plentiful and the food ready in about 10 minutes. My biggest criticism is that the batter was not seasoned at all, even with salt. It was just a bland breading. We have been eating at tel he various seafood restaurants in west haven for more years than I would share and have always talked about trying Turks and finally did. The service was a little slow but once we have the waitress' attention she was wonderful. We were in for dinner during a few 90 degree days and I will say the AC needs to be serviced. The menu is exactly what you would expect from a seafood place and the selection prices and portions were pretty consistent with what you would get elsewhere in the area. I had the fried scallops which were good. My wife had the clam strips which were very good. The coleslaw was good. I liked the fried she did not. The onion rings were a disappointment. Also note they don't allow substitutions- most places will let us order onion rings for an up charge here you have to order the side, a side of onion rings and a side of coleslaw if you want the meal with onion rings! Not the end of the world but a little more expensive then you might thing. We left with the following take away - environment and service could be better. Food was overall good. We would not avoid going back and would likely go back if one of the other places in west haven/east haven/Stratford are not available. read more

I attended Turk's this past week. I no longer live in West Haven but grew up there. Turk's was a place we used to frequent when I was a child. I ordered the fried shrimp dinner and it was pretty good. I prefer the original badder but it was good. My brother ordered a hot dog which looked great and I also had their lobster bisque which was out of this world! It was creamy and had lobster meat. Loved every bite. I would give them 4 stars for food. Service and customer care and honoring their gift cards I give them zero but you can't so I'm only giving them one! I have a gift card that I received several years back and I have to forget about it and I pulled it out today well we go to church I called them up and he said they won't honor it and it's $50 so beware don't buy their gift cards and by the way they ruined it cuz I had six people coming with me for dinner so your loss! Wednesday night . 6:45 . Came in . Was seated . Many open tables . Older women with a bee hive type hair who had sat me , left and never came back . I saw her looking angry and pacing . I tried waving as it reaches the fifteen minute mark . I got up , took my knife and fork and napkin , walked into the bar area , and had to order and serve myself . Great French fries !!! The updated decor is very inviting, a lot of natural light. The staff is nice. The drinks are super reasonable ($22 wine bottles, $6 glasses). The seafood is just "meh" I would say better than Jimmie's (obviously) but much worse than Stowes. The lobster meat wasn't the big fresh chunks that you would want and the fried seafood was a little over fried. The fries were great tho. Very small portions for the price they charge and to feel like you're sitting in a McDonalds....no restaurant feel, served food on a tray no plates, no ambiance very echoey & noisy. The best seafood restaurant on the shore in West Haven looks like a hole in the wall across the street from the beach the view is not much but the food is great my favorites, the hotdogs french fries, whole belly clams and lobster rolls. Sit in the dining room or in the front part which is kind of like a diner. Nice friendly people and prices are much better than the competition. I literally just went here for the first time , and it was a bad experience.First we waited for 20 minutes then the stressed out waitress screens out table for 2 come with me, when we get to the table she says never mind because the table was dirty and the floor was wet with juice and she left us there standing. So, Turk's... You know, say what you want about it being old and run-down, but the fact is, sometimes old and run-down is awesome. Yes, the place hasn't been redecorated since about 1954. Yes, the veggies I got were basically served right out of the plastic bag they were frozen in. And yes, my buddy and I only ate a couple of split hot dogs, a lobster roll, and some fries. But you know what? It was great. The fries there are, no doubt, frozen, but cooked just right and are golden brown and crispy. Add in a couple of West Haven style split hot dogs and for $7 you have a winner. My friend was also happy with his lobster roll. Adding to the charm of this place is the menu. It's almost incomprehensible. I think we saw about 3 or 4 menu items listed in different places on the menu without anything distinguishing what made one different from the other, and all at different prices. It was like a cult-classic B-movie that is so bad it's good. Even better were the place mats. They were printed in 1974! They didn't give us any crayons to color with, though... Minus one star for that! Seriously, Turk's has not changed over the years. It's exactly how I remember it from my childhood. For some of you this may be looked upon as good, for some of you, not so much. But complain as you might, there's something to be said for a place that offers no pretense. My friend recommended we go here to eat seeing as she grew up in this restaurant. We were greeted by a pleasant worker who showed us to our seats. The restaurant was fairly empty so we ordered our food right away. We both got the Skipper's meal which was shrimp, scallops, clams and instead of the cod, I substituted it for calamari. The food was pretty decent but the reason they are getting only 3 stars is because of the waitress. For starters, she spoke at such a high volume, I almost questioned if she thought I was hearing-impaired. Then, she confused me regarding the sides I wanted/didn't want and didn't adequately explain it at all. She also never checked on us, refilled our water so much so that I had to ask the other worker at the door if I could get a ginger ale.
