My wife and spent the past week touring New England. The final stop on our trip was Hamden CT to visit her brother and his wife. For lunch on our last day he introduced us to Stowe's. I'm so glad he did! This place is great! Before lunch we worked up an appetite walking Sandy Point Bird Sanctuary. After our walk we stopped by Stowe's which is right there. When you walk in you order at the counter and they give you a buzzer. My brother-in-law and I each had the Lobster Roll and it was delicious. I wouldn't change a thing! We drove an hour to bring relatives here because it was so good the last couple times. But somehow the seafood quality already changed. .. maybe different chef ? The new England chowder was water down, even taste a bit sour...(That's strange for clam chowder).. someone dropped a lemon by mistake? .. Fried scallops and fried clam strip no longer taste the same, not as fresh and sweet. Scallops texture is kinda hard to describe but different. .. Fried fish batter was too thick and fish is very dry and bland this time We also has lobster roll it's just ok.... At the end we didn't want to eat anymore Last time when i order, i order everything individually...this time i kept being told combo is $1 different and you get all fries to come with. Don't try the bathroom out there, not very nice. We didn't eat all the food and relatives are not happy with the meal ... So after sharing the feedback they kindly gave us a seafood chowder (thank you)..... The soup is creamy and better than the clam chowder although the seafood is overcooked. After a spending most of the day walking around New Haven I decided I wanted to have a lobster roll. Some quick Googles led me to Stowe's. It's situated right across from the beach and they have their own parking lot which is always a plus. It's got a pirate theme going on and there's pirate-related decor all over the place. Definitely feels like a hole in the wall. I went around 5PM and the place was pretty busy. Plenty of patrons eating outside and a bunch more waiting to take their orders to-go. Actually, technically every order is a to-go order. You go up to the counter and order what you want and they give you a buzzer that lets you know when your food is ready. Whether you choose to sit at the tables outside is up to you. But everything comes packaged in takeout containers. Service was quick and friendly. CASH ONLY. They do have an ATM though. I ordered a lobster roll, soft shell crab sandwich, clam chowder, and lobster bisque. Everything was pretty good but the sandwiches were a bit pricey. On the menu they're listed as market price and apparently lobster rolls were $22 and soft shell crab sandwiches were $17 that day. We had the soups first since they were ready immediately. The lobster bisque was ok, but a bit too creamy for my taste. I found myself tiring of the taste after several spoonfuls. I much preferred the clam chowder. It had a great consistency and it was served at a perfect temperature. The flavor was on point as well. I really enjoyed the clam chowder. The lobster roll was good, but not great. To be fair, I'm not a huge fan of lobster so take my opinion with a grain of salt. The lobster was fresh, but I found it to be a little bland. I got the sauteed roll, maybe I should've tried the fried. I really liked the soft shell crab sandwich. It literally looked like they took a whole crab and deep fried it then put it in a bun. I see the delivery truck from Ipswich all week and knew that everything would be fresh. Loved the scallops. Fries are delicious. Tacos were dry. I just downloaded Yelp just to write a review for this place. First, the lobster bisque tasted like straight-up discount queso with red dye in it. There weren't any lobster chunks in it whatsoever, which is pretty disappointing considering it's supposed to be lobster bisque. My mom and I both ordered the lobster rolls with the lobster sautéed in butter. When our food arrived, the buns weren't toasted, there was no butter to be found, and parts of both rolls weren't even filled all the way with lobster. To make matters worse, the rolls were already pretty small for the price. For what they're charging, I expected much better quality and attention to detail. Between the disappointing bisque, the underfilled lobster rolls, and the lack of the preparation we specifically ordered, this meal was not worth the money. Tried to come once before with my daughter but it was closed so I was so happy this time that it was open. We arrived at just the right time. The place filled up as soon as our food got done. The service was at the indoor counter where you placed your order, paid (cash only / ATM on premises) and received a device that made noise to let you know your order was ready to pick up and to go pick it up. The portion sizes weren't huge but the pieces of what we ordered were!! Perfectly prepared and wonderful flavor. It was extremely hot but we chose to sit outside under one of the nice shady umbrella tables. The breeze coming off the water almost made us cold. Which was surprising seeing as there was a heat warning in effect. So if you are looking for fine dining this is not the place. But if you are looking for good food, salt water smells coming from the water and wind to cool you down then this is your place. Looking forward to going back And trying more menu items read more

We came here to try their lobster rolls. They do not have any seating inside but lots of outdoor seating. You order inside and they will let you know when your order is ready. We got 2 lobster rolls, a stuffed clam, Mac n cheese bites, and some fries. For how talked about they are, the lobster rolls were not worth the price for us. The meat wasn't too flavorful or tender. The bread it came in wasn't great either. Overall, I wouldn't recommend it. The other items were just fine. We were a bit disappointed but had also heard good things about the clam strip sandwich so we got an order of that to split. These were great! A mountain of crispy clam strips with some sauce really hit the spot. Overall, I'd recommend coming here for the clam strip sandwich and the seaside vibes but would maybe skip the lobster roll. read more

Found this while looking up food places to eat. We ordered the treasure chest which was 50.00 now wait till you see the pic!!! It was definitely fried came with fries and coleslaw. Shrimp, scallops,crab cake , sole, haddock fish, clams. It was really good. Supposedly it feeds 2-4 peeps depending on ur hunger, well we were hungry!! Had a little left over. The fries were home cut and flavorful, the coke slaw was perfect, shrimp and scallops to perfection, the sole was very flaky, hallock was ok to me , but way too much clams. They give you all the fixings with it as well, Also tried the clam chowder. You know it's fresh when you get a little sand in ur soup!! It was good but a little too thin for me, but I enjoyed it!! First it's cash only! That's important to know they have an ATM but it was out of service. With that being said I has a lobster roll and it was the most delicious thing I've ever tasted. All the food is basically prepared to go there are tables you can eat at that are both covered and outside. It's clearly a local favorite people were coming in and out. There is limited parking. Beachy fish shack that serves seafood right by the ocean. I love the outdoor tables with umbrellas - we stopped by on a summer morning and the sea breeze was so nice. We ordered the boat with cod and a cup of clam chowder. The boat is huge!! Definitely enough for two to share. The breading/cod were pretty bland (which was such a let down since it looked and smelled so good!) but tasted a lot better with some salt. The coleslaw was great. I liked the clam chowder as well - its a little thinner than classic New England but thicker than Rhode Island. It comes with large chunks of potato and lots of clams. Finally I was able to eat in this place after so many times I drove in the area. I know this place can get crowded in the weekends, but we went there on Saturday late lunch and it was a little busy. They have a small parking lot. There is not parking lot close by. When we get there we were excited to try the seafood, that's their specialties. There are plenty of tables to sit with cool umbrellas. We didn't know that we have to go inside to order and it's ONLY CASH. they have an atm just in case you forget to bring cash. The prices are reasonable for seafood, and the portions are good, except for the lobster roll.. I ordered the Fish & Chips with Cod (BOAT) . They dish comes with fries and coleslaw. The fish and chips were good to my personal preference. I really love cod fish it has better flavor. Also we got a Sauté Lobster Roll. The presentation was a little messy. The only dish I would re-order (if forced) would be the lobster bisque, but not really. All sandwiches were absolutely bland, with zero seasoning not even salt! The lobster roll was similarly tasteless, and very very expensive! The stuffed shrimp was stuffed with some disgusting tasteless goop. I'm perplexed at any positive reviews. Summertime must have this well known seafood joint rocking, because even in winter I really enjoyed this. Misnomer: Even though they open at 10, the kitchen does not open until 11, so think about that if you want to come here for lunch. I got three fish tacos and a gumbo. Now mind you, I just got back from New Orleans, so when I got the latter, my expectations I hoped would par up to what I just had. The gumbo does just that. It tastes meaty, with tons of seafood, and an amazing flavor. I could have eaten this in a bathtub and it would still taste good. The tuna tacos are okay, the mango salsa dominates them. It took a bit of the taste away from the fish, but they still work pretty well. They are a cash only establishment and you are warned several times. I like that this restaurant literally overlooks the water. Even though it was cool outside, and being that it is December, I still enjoyed taking in thar beautiful breeze off the Long Island Sound and enjoying great seafood to go along with it. They are open year round, but there is only outdoor seating. Nothing fancy here, order your food, and it will come in a styrofoam container place in a paper bag. My wife and I both ordered the Boat which is your choice of seafood, fries, and coleslaw. My choice was the fish and chips. Four thick pieces of cod in a nice light batter. My wife ordered the whole belly clams. Both meals were delicious and quite filling. I also felt that at $21.00 each it was very reasonably priced. There is limited seating but there is more seating now than before their big renovation. We get the Treasure Chest and there is enough food to eat the rest of the week!!! Can't get any fresher than right out of the fryer!!! We have NEVER been disappointed. No ATM card well, TAKE CASH. No big deal!!!! We go early because during rush hour parking is limited. The tartar sauce I think is house made as well and is excellent to dip. Only criticism would be the bathroom facilities are a single porta pottie and foot pump hand wash that was out of water. So with that said, I ventured almost clear downstate to the seafood eatery on Long Island Sound in West Haven This unassuming seafood shack was a little slow this Wednesday just before lunchtime. Lots of parking when we showed up, but it filled up quickly while we were eating. Just before ordering, I noticed they do not take credit cards of any kind. This is a cash only place, and clearly stated. The order went in, the $25 lobster nachos, $50 seafood box, along with an extra crab cake, two local sodas, and the bill was somewhere around $85. A little steep, but I will see what we get. To my surprise, the heaping plate of nachos was served with a lot of lobster meat on top along with a seafood bisque type gravy. The lobster meat appeared equal amounts of tail and claw. This appetizer was delicious. It was worth the $25 or so. I could picture sharing this with someone over some cold beers. Next up was the $50 seafood box. This was a 6" x 6" x 6" cake box, loaded with fried fish, that appeared to be three different types, clam strips, shrimp, sea scallops, crab cakes (2) and seasoned french fries. On the side, was a small order of coleslaw, which were two portions included with the meal. Let me tell you, this lunch was perfection. A food coma! Fish, lightly battered and deep-fried, were simply delicious. I'm not a big fan of clam strips I like the whole bellies, but these clam strips were breaded and deep-fried to perfection. The sea scallops were fresh, lightly breaded, and again, deep-fried to perfection. Also included were probably half a dozen medium size shrimp, lightly breaded, seasoned, and deep-fried. Delicious! The french fries on the bottom of the box were a little on the soggy side, but OK. I'll give them a pass. The local sodas were a nice touch. If you are looking for a seafood shack in Connecticut, along the coast, look no further then going to West Haven on the shore. Stows hits all the spots. Stow's is a five-star all day long, just bring a lot of cash. This was total value, and with two more sodas, would've fed four people easily. read more

I have always had better eating experiences during the shoulder seasons ( fall & spring ). Fried fish sandwiches were packaged nicely & look great but they are very bland/under seasoned. The fries are good-onion rings a bit greasy & flavorless. Service is usually quick & the location is fabulous ( right across from the beach ) but it's very tight on parking. Pleasant & casual outside seating is available in a rustic Robinson Crusoe ambiance. read more

We were craving seafood and found this place to have a good selection of fried seafood with decent price. We had our eyes on the Treasure Chest deal - which is literally a big paper box with variety fried seafood: clams, shrimp, 1 crab cake, fries, scallop, sole, and haddock for $40. It also comes with slaw, lemon, tartar and cocktail sauce for dipping. The menu says it comes with toast but I didn't receive any - which was fine since we were too full to eat carbs. The box was probably 30% fries, 25% fish, 25% clams and the other 20% consist of the rest of the seafood not mentioned. I do want to again emphasize there was only ONE single crab cake in there - which was our favorite part. It was a decent size one too. We didn't really like the fried fishes that much... but the shrimp, scallop, and clams were delicious. I would say you can easily share this with 4-5 people. Is it a good deal? I personally wouldn't get it again but if you're sharing with a big group it might be a good choice. It's also located right next to the beach and the seating area is adorable.
