I love coming here for fresh fried fish. There are two entrances on the right is to go and the door on the left for dining in. Today we dined in and ordered my absolute favorite, the fish and shrimp combo. Walk up to counter place order and food is delivered to your table by number. With a fair size dining room there's always an open table. The portions are shareable and come with plenty of extras like fries and onion rings. Next time I will try the hush puppies. read more

The food tastes really good, but lately the service has been disappointing. There have been several times when items were missing from my order, and the staff did not seem very professional. I understand that mistakes happen, but it's frustrating when the same item is forgotten over and over again, especially since I visit this restaurant often. Another issue is the portion sizes. For almost $30, I expected a much larger catfish and shrimp platter. The catfish portions were so small that they looked more like chicken tenders than catfish fillets. The manager, Hidi, spoke with us privately about one of the mistakes, which I appreciated. However, after dealing with the same problems repeatedly, I'm disappointed. As a paying customer, I expect better service, accurate orders, and portions that match the price. read more

On the way to NYC I made an effort to stop in New England for a lobster roll; D'Amato's was highly rated in New Haven! There are two parts to the building- one side for takeout only and one side for dine-in. I ordered a lobster roll, side of calamari, and a cup of clam chowder. Oh my goodness...hands down the best lobster I've had in my life! The lobster was super fresh and served on a buttery fluffy roll. The "side" of calamari was huge, and also came with 2 pieces of toast. It wasn't greasy and the calamari was well-spiced. The clam chowder had generous clam bits and felt like a warm hug. To anyone who needs a good seafood fix- D'Amato's is the place! read more

I can't believe I never came here sooner! I met Heidi who is exceptional! She helped me plan out my meal so I could try as much as possible. The clam strips with seasoned well and were super fresh. They paired well with their amazing tartar sauce. I got the 1/2 and 1/2, French fries and onion rings also seasoned very well, fresh and crispy. The lobster roll was on a soft, buttered, toasted bun, a squeeze of lemon and I was in heaven. The outdoor seating is great.. can't wait to go back! read more

Banger. came here as a stop on a road trip and was worth it. The only thing I knock is the price as for two people it came out to 100 for two lobster rolls and a seafood plater. The lobster rolls were so good and with no filler. The bun was perfectly buttered and the lobster was so sweet!. The seafood plater came with fish, clams strips, shrimp scallops and they gave so much sauce. Each was cooked to perfection and the we had leftover and they still tasted so good and it wasn't dry at all. Everything was moist and great tasting. We had this as takeout and would recommend this to anyone passing by. The place is quite homey vibe and the area is split between takeout and dine. read more

Just bought a seafood platter with Clams Shrimp, Filets and Scallops. The scallops had burn crumbs from the bottom of the fryer attached to them. Whomever fixed the order should have discarded those scallops. The clams were tough the rest of the food was soso. Definitely not up to the standard that D'amatos use to stand for. All the seafood should have the same golden appearance as you can see that's not the case. I will not go there again. Next time I will go to The Sandpiper where the quality and taste are A number 1. That was $44 wasted read more

This was my first time visiting' New Haven and D'Amatos seems to be a local favorite. Small and quaint establishment with on street parking. You had the ability to sit inside or outside; however, on this quite cold day we opted for inside. All of the food was freshly prepared, seasoned to perfection and served piping hot. Nothing but good food and great service. There was a young lady (I didn't catch her names) but she was able to multi task, get people's order correct and never get upset or annoyed even when the person on the phone seemed to want to know the price of every menu item. She was able to keep her composure and gave service with a smile. If you are ever in New Haven Connecticut, D'Amatos Seafood should be on your list of go to restaurants. read more

Stellar fried seafood exists in New Haven and can even travel to you via ordering apps. This place is not near the water and the views are not probably what you'd hope for if dining there. But the fried seafood is top top notch in flavor. It's their batter they season it right. The fried shrimp and the fried lobster are my go tos but I'm sure the rest is stellar too. read more

Great spot for fried seafood. Friendly service, she recommended the fried shrimp, which was crispy, tasty, and tender-- about 6 with the lunch special. Fries were actually potato wedges (yum). Onion rings were lightly breaded more like onion straws. Fried catfish was so flaky and delicate. Tartar sauce was yummy. I didn't ask my friend how the hot dog was but there was no evidence of it so it must have been good. Chowder was hearty and thick. read more

This place is an absolute must! We got a lobster roll and a combo #1. First, the proportion for the combo is huge and what I loved about it was that there was actually a good amount of meat! None of that sneaky fried piece posing as meat. Also, the scallops were the best I've ever had by far! When I told the server it was our first time there, she said it wouldn't be our last and she's 100% right - we will definitely be back. read more

3.29.24 I've been coming here on and off for several years. It has been a while since I've been here but every time I had been here the food has always been good. Very good in fact. Must of it is fried seafood but oh so good. I usually get the mild white fries fish. It is a quick service spot with some picnic tables out front. Most of the time I've taken it to go. The prices are decent. I've always parked along the busy street and it has never been an issue. Small place. Plainly decorated. The service has always been fine for me. No complaints on my end. They're friendly most of the time. Other times it's just regular order, pay and thank you. Even though the fish is deep fried its not very oily or greasy. I hardly see any greasy residue in the containers it comes in. They've always seemed to be using fresh oil. They must change the oil frequently because I can tell when it's old oil that hasn't been changed recently. There's usually a taste difference and also the food absorbs the oil more and it's soaked into the food. That's not the case with place. They're located in a not so great section in New Haven on Whaley Ave but I luckily haven't experienced anything negative relative to the area. Ok, it's a real crappy area but it's worth stopping by and experiencing their food. read more

Service always friendly. I would drive 40 minutes one way at least twice a month. Food tasty and fresh. It all came to a halt last summer when I dined in with my family and saw a dead roach. I couldn't finish my meal. They say shrimp are the roaches of the sea, and still I cannot bring myself to eat at an establishment with roaches. Best of luck to you. Hope you get the bug problem straightened out. Absolutely not false! Actual paying customer. The dead critter was on the take out dine in side on the left side of the building. The dead roach was by the garbage cans in front of the register. Have absolutely no reason to lie on a business. I am surprised this was the only review that mentioned it. Nice place to eat with very fresh lobster rolls! The lobster rolls only had 2 pieces of that pointy ended, rubbery, foam-like end-of-the-claw pieces I don't like. It was full of very fresh and perfectly cooked claw and knuckle meat. The platter came with your choice of french fries or onion rings. We got the onion rings, which I have to tell you were The Best, freshly made onion rings we've had in quite a while. We'd actually ordered them, hoping they wouldn't be that good so we'd be able to have one or two and be done! :) But they were clearly made fresh and the batter was perfectly light... to die for! We polished off the entire basket, not meaning to. If they use the same batter for their other fried seafood, I bet it's also amazingly delicious. The coleslaw tasted fresh and was delicious too. read more

On a recent excursion to New Haven, friend and I found this little gem not far from our final destination (Ikea). The gentleman who took our order did so quickly and efficiently. He answered questions, got our order out to us within minutes. Fried seafood is a welcome meal when all the pieces fall into perfect step. Oil did not taste off, fish was not over cooked, and there was plenty of it. Calmari has numerous tentacles fried to perfection. Friends shrimp (she said) were also perfectly cooked. Was accompanied by steak fries and onion rings. Only complaint is that those of us visiting have to look for parking. Summer visitors also have the option of sitting outside at one of many picnic tables. One of many wonderful places in Connecticut. read more

My go-to seafood shack on the coast changed hands, receiving subsequent questionable reviews that make me reluctant to go back right away, so I've been in search of the next-best fried clam strips in the area. Strips with a good crunch, light breading, and of course great clam flavor. After trying a few places around the greater New Haven area, I think I've found the winner! D'Amato's clam strips are damn near perfect. They're crunchy, not overly breaded, and the seasoning is on point. I didn't even have to add salt (and I add salt to everything). I really can't think of anything I'd change. The food came out quick, and the staff was super friendly too. This might be my new regular summer spot for fried seafood deliciousness. read more

Was in New Haven and decided to try a seafood place. Found D'Amatos on Yelp, and had to try it because of the rave reviews. We were not disappointed. We wanted to try it all, so we each got a lobster roll, and split the seafood platter. The lobster rolls were great. Every bite was filled with lobster. And not claws, real lobster meat. It was delicious. Not much room left for the seafood platter, but we each had a scallop. Big, sea scallops full of flavor when you bite them. So good. The rest we packed up and brought home with a bowl of clam chowder to go. My husband ate the chowder, clam strips, fries, and onion rings. Loved it all. We still have 2 full meals left over. Had the scallop + whole clams, and a cod plate. The batter was light and seafood was fresh, what else can you ask for? My only complaint would be that the food seems a bit under-seasoned, but that may be a good thing so we aren't shoveling extra salt in with the fried food. Also I wish the cod came with a more interesting carb rather than plain white toast. But all in all, the seafood itself was better than I've had at some other fan faves. Sadly they were out of catfish and white chowder but the person who took our order gave good recommendations for substitution. The lobster bisque was good but I wish the temp was a little hotter. Overall this spot ranks highly among comparable fried seafood joints. I do appreciate that the place didn't smell at all of fried food or seafood/fishy. I liked the layout of one side dine in, the other for pick up so that folks aren't piling up over each other. Prices as expected for this type of fare, portions were decent. Quick service, food hit the spot, clean facilities, bathroom available. read more

I finally made it to D'Amatos Seafood. My sister and I went to visit our God daughter Zenae at Southern Univ and D'Amatos was literally 10 minutes away. When we arrived there was a line outside the door and you could smell the fresh seafood. My mouth was watering. When we were next to order, I made sure to look at the menu and they had ma ny different ways to order for 1 person up to 3 or more ppl. My sister Antoinette never wants to share and trust me when I say you will not be able to eat all the food they give you. I ordered combo # 3 which is the fried fillet with sea scallops, jumbo shrimp and hush puppies with onion rings. We decided to dine in which is connected to where you put in your order. We have the option of choosing another type of fish. I preferred the fried whiting fried soft along with the rest of my food. My sister ordered the combo #3 with fried whitting not fillet like mines and she ordered a.side of their clam strips. Zenae oredered the fried fish sandwich. Let me say that everything was fried perfect crispy and the fish was fresh. It was so much food I was like done looking at it all. The yush puppies were banging but the onion rings were least favorite and I love onion rings. I will do the fries next they were banging. I had so much food to carry home but for me & my sis the food is only good when your eating it there. Oh I almost forgot to inform you that they also have outside area as well for dinning. I will Absolutely return to D'Amatos but I will make sure I have a companion to share with me. The food is awesome. After reading so many positive reviews- I had to see it for myself and wife. We got there early at 11:30 AM and found nearby parking. Note - there's no parking permitted in front of the building. So start scouting for parking when you're about a block away. There's only street parking. No meter , although the street signs notes only 1 hr parking permitted. When we entered D'Amato we were greeted by a wonderful staffer. She was very patient and polite. We felt very welcome as we decided to order the deboned whiting with onion rings and the Cod fish with steak fries. We enjoyed our lunch and had some leftover to snack on tonight. The restaurant was very clean and neat. If the weather is nice you can sit outside in front of the store on one of their picnic tables. They have 2 entrances . The door on the right is for takeout and the door on the left is for dining in only. I found D'Amato seafood to be a casual and laid back place to lunch out. I took 2 photos which appears to be the same as previously taken over the past years by others. I guess when you got the formula down and if it's not broken - why change it. Came here for catfish (researched places all over to find it) but they were out. If there's something you want here call ahead to make sure they have it. It's all fresh so they run out of stuff. They were also out of cod. We opted to share fish and chips with flounder. It had good flavor, enough to share. The fries were really great. Everything super fresh and right out of the fryer. There's tons of picnic tables outside and some type of indoor dining right next door which is a little confusing as it looks separate but it's not. Is it the same menu? I think you have a server on that side. Street parking only. We would come back and try more here for sure.
