I have made it a policy only t o eat fish from Number One Fish Market for the last 30 + years because it is the best, freshest fish in the area, even though it is fairly pricey, because it makes sense for me to pay for top quality and that's what I get at Number One. However, yesterday, july 7, I ordered a live lobster and frog legs to be delivered from Number One. It never came and when called Grubhub to find out why, they told me that the order was to be picked up. I remember clearly that I checked the delivery box since I don't drive anymore and there was no way I could have picked it up. We love to cook on a daily basis, and seek out high quality veggies and fish, even if it's pricey. This place is absolutely a gem. There's no question #1 Fish Market is the best food market of any sort we've found in the New Haven area (and we've been trying a lot and been generally very disappointed !!!). It stands up very well by comparison to the best seafood markets in Boston and New York. Yes, it's small and cramped on weekends - because it's great stuff and people know it! If that's a problem for you, order ahead of time for pick-up, or get delivery! Also, it's August now, and they have a farmer deliver fresh corn, tomatoes, and fresh herbs and veggies daily, that beat most farmer's markets in freshness and goodness (also accompaniments like rice wine vinegar, nori, high quality canned clams - even though their fresh ones are the best). I love their Sun Gold tomatoes in particular (the little yellow babies - not cherries), but those get gobbled up fast. The staff is also very competent and friendly - they engage you in conversation when it's not busy, but they do try to hurry people along when it's terribly busy - that's totally understandable - I want the line to keep moving when I'm last! #1 Fish Market is very good but expensive. It's also very tiny so in Covid times you may have wait outside on a Saturday other busy times. A quality fish market is hard to come by these days, but the second I walked in to Number 1 Fish Market, I knew I'd be returning frequently. One stop here and you will ditch the seafood sections at your local grocery store! There are a variety of seafood options from farmed to organic, and they also sell whole fish that are often difficult to find at your local grocery store. Most importantly the quality and freshness of their seafood is the main reason I'll be returning. I recently purchased 2 Sea bass, along with half a pound of sea scallops. The sea bass were perfect with clear eyes, flesh that bounced back when you touched it, and had no sort of "fishy" smell. It may sound strange but those are the first three things you should look for when buying fish. The scallops were also very fresh, and cooked wonderfully. The staff was pleasant, welcoming and knowledgeable. This is a rare thing nowadays, an actual FISH MARKET. Their selection is by far larger than any grocery store seafood dept including Stew Leonard's. You may find better prices on some things that are sale at the Grocery stores, but the quality and freshness are hit or miss. Here the freshness and thus quality, is always as good as it gets outside of RI or the big wholesale market in Boston. I think their prices are better than City Fish up in Wethersfield. The price I recently paid here for lobster was a dollar a pound cheaper than a local grocery store's sale price some months ago. As always, Number 1 Fish Market hit it outta the park, with three 2-1/4 pound lobsters and steamer clams. They even carry those silly, but useful disposable lobster bibs like the ones you get at a restaurant. I couldn't find those ANYWHERE else! The store also has those small stainless steel cups for melted butter, and lobster/crab picks, as well as lobster cracking tools. And lest I be remiss, they also carry the very best and freshest fish of just about any kind that's available, including wild salmon, farm raised salmon, swordfish, cod, flounder, sea bass, and shrimp in every size, filleted and whole, etc. They also offer cooked shrimp, picked lobster, prepared lobster tails, as well as a freezer with many different frozen, related seafood. I believe this is a RACIST BUSINESS. I had the worst customer service experience in several years today at Number One Fish Market. This afternoon, I brought my elderly mother, who is Asian and visiting from out of state, to the market, as she wanted to treat us for a seafood dinner. After picking out a large order (over $200), my mom asked where to checkout, and I directed her to the front of the store. At that point, a middle age man who was running the cash register - he looked like the photos I've seen of the owner - looked in the direction of my mom and another younger woman nearby and asked if one of them had been helped (it wasn't evident whom he was speaking to). My mom said she was next to pay - at which point the man at the cash register snapped at her and literally snarled, "I wasn't talking to you! I was talking to her!" - as he directed his attention to the woman next to my mom. I was totally shocked at his behavior, especially considering the large order we were in the process of purchasing. We then made our purchase and left the store, and when we got to my car, two separate *customers* came out of the store and approached my mom and me in my car and independently said they felt terrible about how the guy at the cash register had treated my mom and actually apologized to us - including the woman he had brushed my mom aside for, who advised me to write a negative review (hence, what I'm writing now) and said that she herself would never patronize the store again because of this man's behavior. In our current cultural climate, this man's treatment of us felt like anti-Asian racism. I hate using that term, but that's how both my mom and me felt. He treated my mom like some worthless elder who didn't belong in his store - and the spontaneous support we got from two customers in the store who witnessed our interaction only further corroborated how denigrated we felt from our experience there. The owner should be absolutely ashamed! I will never patronize this RACIST BUSINESS again. read more

Stayed in North Haven for 8 days to drop off a student at Yale. Prior to my visit I Researched Yelp and seen Number 1 Fish Market. We went there and couldn't believe the seafood in the market I'm from San Francisco /San Jose California Area with a melting pot of different Restaurants and Markets. I WISH WE HAD THIS TYPE OF FISH MARKET. We probably do but Not with East Coast Seafood and soft shell crabs delicately protected for optimal presentation and quality. We bought some very Large Prawns the 1st visit to steam at the AirBNB we rented with full kitchen and it was a treat with lemon salt and pepper. The fish market was walking distance from the AirBNB house We found another Excellent store one being the Fish Market the other I'll write a review separately. I planned on eating a lot since I'm from the West Coast and wanted to enjoy everything East Coast. The Man behind the counter was from New York and worked here during the week he is very knowledgeable and is a pleasure to talk with. Everything in this market is excellent. We ended up going back for 3 live lobster at 2 1/2 pounds each to steam at the house. Prices are good really good compared to California. I love Bob and Number 1 Fish Market - but if you're Asian, you'll likely be disappointed to see that there are no heads or tails on their fish. They filet everything, so you won't be taking home any whole fish to steam or braise, disappointingly. For that, you'll have to stick to the rivers and streams (and Asian markets) you're used to (did I just pop in a TLC reference here? I think I did). Number 1 is a bit pricier than Stop 'N Shop. I was just in here yesterday and got lobster for $10.99 a pound, while down at Stop 'N Shop my friend got lobster for only $6.99 a pound. My lobster was bigger and I was still happy eating it. I've also gotten littleneck clams here before that arrived on the boat that morning - they were huge, super fresh, and really delicious when we grilled and boiled them. I love how Bob takes the time to chat to each one of his customers and tell them something about the seafood. He certainly knows how to make a personal connection with both the seafood and his clientele! I wish they weren't located so far from New Haven - I have to get a zipcar anytime I get a hankering for fresh seafood. This place is always packed, which is also a great sign.
