Service was impeccable, got 6 whole branzinos and they were fresh. I like how they filet and clean them . Recommend !

Watch them like a hawk told me they will filet a one pound fish only for me to find out he gave me 172 gms of a filet. The other time he gave me 10 scallops and Charged me for 12. You can ignore one mistake not multiple. Never going back read more

A great fish market although on thhhigher side. They even delivered to my car during Covid. My husband called the lobsters we served at Thanksgiving "turkey of the sea". read more

The place is great and the quality is top notch, but one of the workers while we where looking at the lobster he whistle at us like if we where dogs he wanted our attention. Very unprofessional. read more

Always the place for fresh fish!! The lobsters are to die for, and there are plenty of options for sizes. When we are looking to make that "special" fish dinner, it's the only place to go. read more

The store was quite crowded on that Saturday afternoon, but the staff handled it efficiently and kept things moving. I ordered cod and my daughter chose salmon. Everything looked extremely fresh, and when I cooked the cod at home, it was absolutely delicious. We'll definitely be back. read more

Good selection of fresh items. They also had seasonal offerings which is good to see. Clean and fast service.

My local fish market. It's pricey at times, but I'm still back every week. I love the Chilean Sea Bass with he house marinade as well as the Jonah Crab Claws. The Lobster deviled eggs are also a nice treat. The Branzino and Snapper are always fresh. I really cant say enough about how much I love this place. read more

#1 Fish Market - Seafood Markets Near Me - Hamden, Connecticut

I have made it a policy only t o eat fish from Number One Fish Market for the last 30 + years because it is the best, freshest fish in the area, even though it is fairly pricey, because it makes sense for me to pay for top quality and that's what I get at Number One. However, yesterday, july 7, I ordered a live lobster and frog legs to be delivered from Number One. It never came and when called Grubhub to find out why, they told me that the order was to be picked up. I remember clearly that I checked the delivery box since I don't drive anymore and there was no way I could have picked it up. This message is just to let you know that somebody made a mistake and I didn't have the dinner I wanted. = read more

Fresh, huge variety of seafood, service is friendly. Like any good fish market ... busy. A-bit pricey but I had no doubt that the seafood was fresh. read more

The staff is very friendly and helpful. While they have a wide selection of seafood, we purchased just littleneck clams. They were all pretty clean and seemed fresh. Overall a positive experience. read more

Consistently the best fish market in the area. We travel from Guilford because it's far better than any market close to us.

What do you get for a seafood loving foodie??? I did extensive research and found this gem..by the way..located right down the street from my friend. This gift was a hit..the fish is extremely fresh..he purchased the trout..the crabcakes are all crab..no fillers and absolutely delicious according to my friend. The seafood is the best around this area, but the service sucks!!! I entered the market and the Staff looked at me and continued to do whatever. Finally, someone ask me did I order. This is not the first time I've had this experience here! read more

Rip off if you do over the phone order, they don't give you what you're paying for even when they punch the food stamp number then and take your pin number to place the charge they claim quantity amount of fish they give you actually add up to the overcharged prices fish last time wasn't so fresh so I definitely wouldn't recommend them overcharge for lots of fresh product read more

The seafood is very okay if you looking for Shrimp or clams. In a good location on the corn of State Street. Overall I would still buy seafood from there if in the area. read more

Owner operated & he's usually onsite & very knowledgeable- this fish market has it all even local produce & good breads, season permitting. Order ahead especially on the weekend. Lines out the door especially in summer. read more

We love to cook on a daily basis, and seek out high quality veggies and fish, even if it's pricey. This place is absolutely a gem. There's no question #1 Fish Market is the best food market of any sort we've found in the New Haven area (and we've been trying a lot and been generally very disappointed !!!). It stands up very well by comparison to the best seafood markets in Boston and New York. Yes, it's small and cramped on weekends - because it's great stuff and people know it! If that's a problem for you, order ahead of time for pick-up, or get delivery! Also, it's August now, and they have a farmer deliver fresh corn, tomatoes, and fresh herbs and veggies daily, that beat most farmer's markets in freshness and goodness (also accompaniments like rice wine vinegar, nori, high quality canned clams - even though their fresh ones are the best). I love their Sun Gold tomatoes in particular (the little yellow babies - not cherries), but those get gobbled up fast. The staff is also very competent and friendly - they engage you in conversation when it's not busy, but they do try to hurry people along when it's terribly busy - that's totally understandable - I want the line to keep moving when I'm last! This is one market in New Haven that is absolutely top notch, can't be beat! read more

#1 Fish Market is very good but expensive. It's also very tiny so in Covid times you may have wait outside on a Saturday other busy times. Tonight we had the shrimp cocktail and grilled the cod I picked up yesterday. It was delicious. We are never disappointed with the quality of the fish. I put this place in the "You get what you pay for" category. read more

Everything fish is so fresh.Even the fries were the best I had.Came from new haven east haven line & so worth the trip. 5 star out of 5.

A quality fish market is hard to come by these days, but the second I walked in to Number 1 Fish Market, I knew I'd be returning frequently. One stop here and you will ditch the seafood sections at your local grocery store! There are a variety of seafood options from farmed to organic, and they also sell whole fish that are often difficult to find at your local grocery store. Most importantly the quality and freshness of their seafood is the main reason I'll be returning. I recently purchased 2 Sea bass, along with half a pound of sea scallops. The sea bass were perfect with clear eyes, flesh that bounced back when you touched it, and had no sort of "fishy" smell. It may sound strange but those are the first three things you should look for when buying fish. The scallops were also very fresh, and cooked wonderfully. The staff was pleasant, welcoming and knowledgeable. They offered suggestions for other purchases, samples for premise salads, and will clean and gut your fish upon request. * They except credit, debit cards, and cash * There is a small parking lot out front * Only a 10 minute drive from downtown New Haven read more

Absolutely the best fish and seafood selections in all of Connecticut and the staff is very knowledgeable - only the prices are rather high. I can only be a once in a while visitor. read more

This is a rare thing nowadays, an actual FISH MARKET. Their selection is by far larger than any grocery store seafood dept including Stew Leonard's. You may find better prices on some things that are sale at the Grocery stores, but the quality and freshness are hit or miss. Here the freshness and thus quality, is always as good as it gets outside of RI or the big wholesale market in Boston. I think their prices are better than City Fish up in Wethersfield. I won't buy Steamers anywhere else in CT. read more

Thank G-d for this terribly convenient place. My wife - the foodie and Thomas Keller disciple - stops in on the way home from work, sometimes several times a week. Yummy! They also sells fresh vegetables from the owners garden, ready to cook dishes (stuffed sole and such), which makes my wife happy as it is a great convenience for her, so I am happy and a lucky :) I have been there a few times myself. Small, crampedy, busy and wonderful. read more

Fresh local seafood. Great variety, well managed and customized to your needs. Well seasoned salads, and filets perfect for dinner or a dinner party. Small, friendly with a great dedicated team. Best options in New Haven County for seafood. If you want blue crabs, lobster, clams and mussels--- they've got them too. read more

This place is awesome. The freshness, and consistent customer service. I love soft shell crabs as well as other types of fish. Every variety I have purchased has been excellent. The price I recently paid here for lobster was a dollar a pound cheaper than a local grocery store's sale price some months ago. When it comes to fish, it is more than price, fish can spoil quite quickly. Large chain grocery stores offer convenience, but several years ago I had purchased soft shell crabs in a local grocery store that were spoiled and smelly. In a specialized market this is all they do. read more

Got rave reviews about the king crab legs from the birthday boy! Said they were THE BEST he had ever had

As always, Number 1 Fish Market hit it outta the park, with three 2-1/4 pound lobsters and steamer clams. They even carry those silly, but useful disposable lobster bibs like the ones you get at a restaurant. I couldn't find those ANYWHERE else! The store also has those small stainless steel cups for melted butter, and lobster/crab picks, as well as lobster cracking tools. And lest I be remiss, they also carry the very best and freshest fish of just about any kind that's available, including wild salmon, farm raised salmon, swordfish, cod, flounder, sea bass, and shrimp in every size, filleted and whole, etc. They also offer cooked shrimp, picked lobster, prepared lobster tails, as well as a freezer with many different frozen, related seafood. I wouldn't by my fresh seafood anywhere else, and this is a 16 mile round trip to & from here, even though I've got another fish market less than 3 miles from me. read more

I believe this is a RACIST BUSINESS. I had the worst customer service experience in several years today at Number One Fish Market. This afternoon, I brought my elderly mother, who is Asian and visiting from out of state, to the market, as she wanted to treat us for a seafood dinner. After picking out a large order (over $200), my mom asked where to checkout, and I directed her to the front of the store. At that point, a middle age man who was running the cash register - he looked like the photos I've seen of the owner - looked in the direction of my mom and another younger woman nearby and asked if one of them had been helped (it wasn't evident whom he was speaking to). My mom said she was next to pay - at which point the man at the cash register snapped at her and literally snarled, "I wasn't talking to you! I was talking to her!" - as he directed his attention to the woman next to my mom. I was totally shocked at his behavior, especially considering the large order we were in the process of purchasing. We then made our purchase and left the store, and when we got to my car, two separate *customers* came out of the store and approached my mom and me in my car and independently said they felt terrible about how the guy at the cash register had treated my mom and actually apologized to us - including the woman he had brushed my mom aside for, who advised me to write a negative review (hence, what I'm writing now) and said that she herself would never patronize the store again because of this man's behavior. In our current cultural climate, this man's treatment of us felt like anti-Asian racism. I hate using that term, but that's how both my mom and me felt. He treated my mom like some worthless elder who didn't belong in his store - and the spontaneous support we got from two customers in the store who witnessed our interaction only further corroborated how denigrated we felt from our experience there. The owner should be absolutely ashamed! I will never patronize this RACIST BUSINESS again. read more

I went there because of their reviews. Passing through town They have a great selection. The guys behind the counter were extremely friendly. I bought a bunch of fresh Haddock. It was great. Their bay scallops were pricey but I haven't shopped them lately. I'd go again in a minute! read more
