Love the fact that there are no appointments - walk in only! So helpful for those of us who have unpredictable schedules. I've never had to wait long, drop my car off in the morning and it's usually ready by lunchtime! The service is honest and fairly priced, and Alan tells me to come in any time I want my oil checked, free of charge. It's also nice that he keeps track of warranty info, so his records coincide with it and offers helpful "how to get the most out of your warranty" advice. I was looking for a new mechanic I felt I could trust. An employee at Kaiser Optometry highly recommended Tune Craft. I had a smog issue to complete after not driving enough to clear the code after failing my first smog test. Although the owner, Alan, isn't a smog station, he gave me advice on the drive I needed to do to clear the remaining code so I could pass the test on the second try. After running the code check, he said I could return, and he'd do another check to see if the remaining code cleared. His advice was perfect! It took me almost 2 weeks to do it, as I had taken a detour to ER. He was so nice to run the code again after time had passed. Because he provides basic services, like oil changes, etal, for most cars, but doesn't work on foreign ones, he still was helpful in referring me to a mechanic up the street for my VW Jetta. He also recommended the Star smog station adjacent to him. His assistant at the front counter is very pleasant, and knowledgeable, as well as showed her humanity when I shared a personal matter. The reason I came here the first time was because they had such excellent reviews and they definitely did not disappoint me. I did a walk in, was able to get in right away and 15 or 20 minutes later I was done and out of there! They also have the best price of any place around. I went again today and the exact same thing happened. I got there about 45 minutes before the 5pm closing and they were nice enough to do the smog check. I even still had time enough to make it to the library before they closed at 5 to pick up some books I had on order. The guy that works on your car has a great sense of humor and is very amiable. The girl who works the front desk couldn't be more cheerful and helpful. It almost makes me sorry I only need to go in here once every two years for the smog check, LOL. Oh and the guy doesn't get after me because my car is so full that he can't even scoot the driver seat back to drive it into the smog check area. He just says that's ok and folds himself up into the seat which is pretty far forward since I'm only 5 foot 2, and does what he gotta do. Thank you thank you thank you! I went to Tune Craft because of the good reviews from fellow Yelpers...and they were right. I made an appointment for a Saturday, and all the work was done that day. The prices were very reasonable (as low as other places if you used their coupon), and Allen seems very honest and knowledgeable. That's all very important to me when it comes to my car, and Alan hit the nail on the head. I'll definitley be going back there the next time I need service. I feel guilty about not giving them five stars, but I've only been there once. I'll update my rating after my second visit. read more

I took my SUV here last year to have some work done for the 60,000 mile checkup. I believe they did decent work, but the correspondence with the employees was disappointing. The guy I worked with had an attitude and wasn't too pleasant. I called back recently to ask a few questions about a problem I was having and another guy, Mike had an attitude over the phone as well. Note to Tune Craft: First impressions are crucial. Please take the time to review customer service with your staff because it really will result in folks taking their business elsewhere. I have now chosen another shop because of your phone etiquette and the face-to-face experience I had in your shop last time I was in. When a customer asks questions over the phone trying to learn more about their vehicle, it isn't helpful if the employee seems irritated and anxious to get off the phone. Answering questions and focusing on customer service is what's going to bring more customers to your shop. This review is coming from a pretty level-headed consumer who can deal with a little attitude, but attitude on multiple occasions is not acceptable. I've been going here since I was 16 years old (13 years and counting!) I have ventured off to other auto service providers following after a coupon or advertised special but nothing has ever lived up to this place. In the past when I've had major repairs and decided to shop around, nobody could come close to their price. I like that when I go in for service, Mike and Allan remember me like an old friend. Personally, the most important value in an auto repair shop to me is 'trust'. If I can't trust a place, I can't feel good about having work done on my vehicle, regardless of the price I'm paying. I can't count how many times I've gone into another shop using one of their "loss-leader coupons" for an oil change or tire service when I've been told my car needed a laundry list of repairs. I always take the laundry list to Mike and Allan who disprove half of what was recommended and determine the other half is not as urgent as the last shop made it seem. You won't ever pay for service you don't need at Tune Craft. This place has a key-drop, which I recommend using. It's best to get your car in early for the quickest turn around, as this place is very popular and can get really busy on certain days. read more

Tune Craft is so reliable its not even funny. I won't bring my car anywhere else. I trust these guys more than I trust my Dad to fix my car--and he was a mechanic. Rates are reasonable, but the money doesn't concern me. I just want honesty. Before finding them, I went to all sorts of places who would write up huge lists of stuff that was wrong with my car. These guys don't bother. They tell me straight-up if my breaks could go one more oil change before needing replacement. They care about my bottom line more than any other mechanics I've met. I've worked on cars as a hobby for 40+ years, so I'm fairly knowledgeable, and I am really impressed with the skill and knowledge that Alan and his crew have. And honesty and fair prices. I had my Explorer towed in when it wouldn't start, Alan immediately diagnosed the electric fuel pump as having failed. The fuel tank has to be removed to replace the pump, so its not something I'd have done at home. That was good, but what really impressed me was 18 months later when the "new" fuel pump failed. Alan was able to get me a new pump under the warranty, saving me about $300! I have taken multiple vehicles into Tune Craft over the past five years. For smog checks, oil changes, and other misc. repairs. I had no issues on those occasions. However, I called Tune Craft a few weeks ago and asked if they had any openings to do a diagnostic on a 95 Honda. The employee said to bring it in. When we arrived and told the men working what we were there for, the older of the two mechanics looked and sounded visibly inconvenienced by us. Ignoring that, we went into the lobby and described the issues we were having. Before finishing we were cut off by this guy, who told us he wouldn't look at the car. He said that this type of car/model (Honda Accord) would be too complicated to fix based on what we told him and he would have to haul the whole engine out. He was basically telling us to not even attempt to fix the car. We left pretty flabbergasted and after the shock of his attitude passed we found a different mechanic at another local auto shop who diagnosed and repaired the car without issue. It may be that they are not looking for jobs that will require too much elbow grease. Maybe he was having a bad day? But whatever the reason, I left the shop feeling as though Tune Craft La Mesa does not value their customers. read more

That said...this is exactly why I will always go to Tune Craft, La Mesa, and have Alan take care of my vehicle. 1. He knows about cars. When I asked him to tell me why my tranny felt weird, he only had to drive it 2 feet to know I needed a new clutch. 2. He doesn't pressure people into extra work or even to go with his shop w/o comparing others...he encourages getting other estimates; 3. His estimate was pretty much spot on. I called around other shops and a couple were better; most were more. I went to the La Mesa Tune Craft, not knowing if they even do transmission work, because I had been there before and trusted them. No, you don't need anything, still have tread on the breakpads. They could have said I needed the whole thing redone for $1500, I wouldn't have known any better probably. Been here a few times already, always had a good experience. Best place I've found in San Diego so far. They'll also advise you on what types of repairs you can afford to wait on, to help you save money-- which is a pleasant surprise! When my 99 Taurus was ailing, they helped me extend its life right up until the transmission started to go, and then they told me it was done. The car wasn't worth the cost to fix it, and they strongly advised me against driving it for even small things anymore. I've since bought another car and moved to OB, and have been dabbling in other repair places closer to me-- and wish I hadn't! I think the half-hour drive to La Mesa would be worth it to visit these guys just for the peace of mind. I plan to go back to what I know the next time my car needs help. read more

I don't have much experience with smog checks. I have taken my car in for smog checks before but really do not know much about what is done, or even how much a standard smog check costs. I yelped "smog check" just to find a place near my home that had decent reviews so I could get my car smogged mandated by the DMV. Tune Craft in La Mesa had more reviews than most of the other places in my area and they were between 4-5 stars, so I gave them a call and was advised that I could bring my car in any time and it would take between 15-20 minutes and the cost would be $48 (I don't remember the exact amount). I ended up paying much more than that for synthetic oil or something so just make sure to clarify when making the appointment or before you buy the groupon exactly what you'll need and how much it'll cost. Came here twice already for oil changes. They are located right across the street from a nice coffee shop which is nice for waiting. They are quick and call you when your done. They save your personal information for future visits and I have never been called or emailed about coming in unlike other places that call on a periodical schedule. THE NEGATIVES: There waiting area is SMALL maybe 3-4 people can sit down There waiting area is really dusty and needs some spring cleaning It does get busy there and they seem to need like 1-2 more mechanics on the pay roll. read more

This establishment was recommended by our landlord since we just moved in from out of town. We called them up to see if we could get our cars in for a smog check to get them registered with the state and the person who answered the phone was very courteous and said to come in any time that works for us and it would be very quick. Indeed about an hour later we stopped by they were wonderful, we walked to the 7-Eleven to grab a coffee and by the time we came back they were finishing our second car. They also quoted a fair low price that most other places would give you if you brought in a coupon or checked in on yelp.
