It's in the midst of this nesting that I've discovered the joys of what the Throckmorton Theatre is laying down. The free, monthly noontime concerts are great as is the always popular weekly comedy night but more recently I've been enjoying the other events offered. In so doing I've come to see the Throckmorton as an essential community asset; they save me a drive to the City while providing right-sized entertainment close to home. When I attend events here I leave feeling thankful for their offerings. In recent months I've enjoyed a Jonathan Richman concert (fab... bring him back!), a concert by a local band, and A Chorus Line, teen edition. That last one left me sorry that I'd missed the previous one-time Broadway shows showcased here and with resolve not to miss another. For a little above the cost of your ticket you can pay to enjoy reserved seats but if you fail to do that you'll find equally satisfying seating on the main floor (they also have balcony seating) if you arrive early enough to snag it. I find myself checking the Throckmorton's calendar with a frequency, these days, that I'd not have anticipated even one year earlier. They've not disappointed yet.

And the interior of the performance hall is exquisite with such detailed woodwork, gorgeous light fixtures and murals. We attended a free musical concert with an outstanding local violinist who featured art on the screen to accompany the music he played. I've honestly not heard a violin played with such versatility. The drinks are surprisingly good (I got a mezcal one), and the space is tiny & intimate & scrappy and behind a kabob shop. The cast do everything - make the drinks, take your tickets, check you in, usher, and perform. Tickets are $25.

Seating is extremely tight (definitely seats less than 100 people). I would suggest that if you go, do NOT sit up front for obvious reasons (like being the subject matter and/or ridiculed), but also because those in front rows were literally spit on (unintentionally of course) by the headliner that raised his voice/yelled as part of his skit - from the side view where we sat and because of the spotlights, we seriously saw the spit travel through the air, land on people who then retracted a bit in shock - we were disgusted, especially in this post-COVID pandemic climate. One of the other comedians stopped his skit and reprimanded those in the audience that were talking - he was so annoyed and wasn't shy about it. We parked in the parking garage across the street, $20 for less than 2 hours wasn't exactly worth it. I wouldn't be against returning as long as there are funny, well known comedians scheduled and marketed - but we won't sit up front :)

Because I had to move, my date had trouble finding me. Once inside, we were told we could be kicked out if we didn't comply with the two-drink minimum. I asked for table water. Instead, the server brought three overpriced bottles of sparkling water. We didn't order sparkling water, didn't drink them, and were still charged for them. What made the experience even worse was how aggressively the drink minimum was enforced during the actual show. Servers repeatedly came back to our table demanding that we order more drinks while the comedians were performing. Rather than being able to focus on the show we had paid to see, we kept having to stop watching, interact with the servers, and deal with pressure to order additional beverages. It was incredibly distracting and took away from the entire point of being there. I understand that a venue can have a two-drink minimum. What I don't understand is why enforcing that policy needs to interfere with the performance or involve repeatedly bothering customers in the middle of the show. The staff and servers we interacted with were also unnecessarily rude and made us feel more like a problem to be managed than paying customers trying to enjoy a night out. I've been to Punch Line many times and have never had an experience like this. Whatever the policies at Cobb's may be, there's a professional and respectful way to communicate and enforce them. This wasn't it. Between the treatment outside, the threat of being removed over the drink minimum, being charged for sparkling water we didn't ask for or drink, the rude treatment, and servers repeatedly interrupting us during the performance to demand more drink orders, this was an incredibly unpleasant experience.

A small space with a bar in the back., no bad seats The people at the elbow room might want to take a look at their public address system. My partner and I had a great time during each set. Lots of jokes about tech, dating, AI, and homeless folks. You know, the SF standard. With that said, the bar is intimate. Every seat is a good seat so you will likely be part of the show in some way (no hiding here!). If you are easily offended, maybe stop by the bar first to loosen up before you settle in for the show. Our drinks were creative and there is something for everyone. My favorite was the Tropic Thunder (pina colada vibes) and espresso martini.
