Oakland Comedy Festival at Calabash (oakland drop cocktail)
    Annabelle R.

The comics of Comedy Oakland put on a hilarious show at Calabash restaurant this past weekend, part of the annual Oakland Comedy Festival. Such a treat on a Saturday night! I'm especially a fan of Samson Koletkar (aka indian jewish comedian), an outstanding entertainer that just cracked me up with his relatable jokes about bay area traffic and living. But the other performers weren't bad either... Tanya Sabrina with her funny impressions of interesting characters and bits about dating, the goofiness of Janan Araujo-Siam, even some martial arts moves on stage by Bernice Ye. Stories and humor about veganism, sexuality, and more throughout the evening. The event started 20 minutes later than the listed showtime and ended about 20 minutes late as well, so it was still a good hour and a half of live stand-up to keep the crowd engaged and full of laughter. A great atmosphere to just kick back, snack on some delicious jerk chicken wings, and enjoy the show.

What a great way to watch and support live and local comedy. We were looking for a spur of the moment activity and saw this on event Brite and were curious. Tickets for a 1.5 hour comedy show at about $20 each with $2-3 in service fees -- a great deal in my book. Plus there was no drink minimum! Comedians were funny and the crowd was good (though a bit smaller than other shows I've been to). I def want to invite people to check out the next show and will attend again. Let's support live comedy!

Was looking for standup comedy nearby and came across this event. Took me 2 mins online to see that it was housed in a pretty looking venue, and that parking would not be a problem. Tickets were $20 and change, and with a no drink minimum that meant one could (in theory) watch a show for under 25 bucks! The parking lot right next to the venue means you're walking 20 feet to get there. The building itself is so lovely and the bar is small but adequate. I started a tab but was definitely surprised when the bill came. Surprised in a good way because the drinks are so inexpensive, wait, I can't remember the last time I used that word in the Bay Area! Anyhoo, we were seated swiftly and really appreciated the host/organizer Samson telling us the process of getting drinks or food, and pointing the way to the restrooms. The lineup tonight was so so good, starting with Samson who is just naturally funny. At one point in the night I did have tears in my eyes from laughing too much. Good times! I feel like I'm gonna be returning often to this gem of a venue for a little bit (ok maybe a lot!) of drinks and laughs.

Although I am a little conflicted about sharing this given that it was so amazing and it becoming popular may change things, I will tell you how good it is because the comedians and organizers deserve it, plus I am not about gatekeeping. I don't even know where to start... The location is fantastic, right at the waterfront. The stage's background was literally water + a beautiful sunset (See the photos if you don't believe me). It is outdoor but still covered, with plenty of heat lamps if you get chilly. The venue is right next to a small restaurant and gourmet-style grocery store and you can buy some food and drinks and enjoy them during the show (no drink/food minimum). The comedians were HILARIOUS right on par with what you'd see in any Netflix special. I've been to Tommy T's in Pleasanton, and House of Comedy in San Jose and this one is my favorite one. The environment is fun, yet relaxed and welcoming. The craziest part about this entire situation is that the VIP tickets are only 20 dollars and general admission is 10. I almost did not buy the tickets because the low cost of the tickets made me wonder about the quality of the show, but I was blown away. HUGE shout out to all the comedians and organizers for such a lovely and hilarious evening.

I hate that all the major comedy clubs have a two-drink minimum. I'd rather just tack on $20 to the ticket price. That being said, Cobb's does have better options for non-drinkers like me.

However, we were seated too close to the front wall that sometimes we just ended up seeing the comedian from behind. I'm sure we would've had a better experience if we didn't have a somewhat obstructed view. There's also a two drink minimum per person, including both alcoholic and non-alcoholic options. This rule was a bit strange to me because all the other comedy spots I've been to allowed me to select a food item to meet the two item minimum. However, Punch Line is very strict on the fact that your two items have to be beverages. The cocktail I got was unmemorable. I should've just gone with something premade and canned. I'd come back here for a comedian that I'd want to see live. Otherwise, I wouldn't go out of my way to come back.

I've been to shows at Cobb's that were a big letdown and have yet to experience such at Critical Hit. Last night the crowd was ready and they had to add extra seats in the back to accommodate. Sure there's no brick wall or velvet backdrop, who cares?! I came to laugh. Xander Beltran closed out a night that already had everyone gassing with great sets from the hosts and Diana Hong! There's something special about local talent sharing a stage with other locals and touring comics. The standup community is a patchwork of regions and backgrounds that somehow finds ways of supporting each other and pulling the best out of these crossing paths. Need ideas for a date night? Critical Hit is the closer. Anywhere nearby in Temescal is going to have good food and drinks. If you're a planner, getting tickets more than a week in advance and it adds very little cost to your budget for the night. If you can't plan your way out of a paper bag, it's still stupid cheap to finish out your night with comedy on a whim. From the photos on the website I was expecting a more spacious venue but in person it's actually quite intimate especially when it's packed with patrons. And there's even a second floor with balcony! Somehow I missed seeing that on the website. We had arrived 30 minutes late but the hosts were super helpful trying to find us seats together. We ended up sharing a small table with another couple near the front. Getting seated with strangers is the norm at comedy shows so I wasn't put off by that. But I wasn't expecting the A/C to be blasting (assumed because everyone is packed in close), so I was glad I brought a hoodie! There is a 2- drink minimum per person but you can order non-alcoholic drinks or food. The menu is not bad. There were the usual items like nachos and chicken strips. I opted for a pretzel and Modelo.. I highly recommend this combo!! The pretzel came out nicely toasted and warm.. and the Modelo was HUGE! Definitely didn't need a second drink after that! All in all, it was a fun first time experience at Cobb's and I would recommend checking it out if you're looking for something to do in the city. Warning: Cobbs Comedy is located in North Beach where parking is hard to find. Free street parking is scarce everywhere in SF but it's particularly painful when you are late to a show in this part of town. So plan accordingly!
