Fantastic improv classes & great community! The teachers are all different, but all excellent. I've taken at least part of 8 classes, and have had nothing but great experiences. You will learn not only how to improv, but also improve yourself as a human. Also, to anyone who has experienced sexism, racism, homophobia, or ableism in theater: not here, you won't. I'm extremely disappointed with all out comedy. I had a bad experience a while ago but then tried to give the place another shot recently and left feeling disappointed. I feel like it's just not for me. Now, I'm giving 1 star because I have further concerns about their professionalism and customer service considering the owner kept changing their response to my other review to random rude replies. First they wrote in all caps saying I'm spam, then they said something like "your car wasn't even ever here".Maybe they are confusing me with another customer and not intentionally trying to manipulate the feedback to discredit my review, but I still can't recommend this place by the odd and unprofessional behavior toward customers regardless of who they think I am instead of offering the typical kindness that you'd expect from a business. We went to All Out Comedy Theater for an improv musical, and it was fantastic! The performers were so talented -- funny, quick on their feet, and the way they turned audience suggestions into a full-on musical was seriously impressive. The energy in the room was contagious, and the crowd was fully engaged the whole time. It's such a fun, welcoming space with a great vibe. This theater has excellent long-form improv in Oakland. I haven't seen long-form this good since Chicago.

I paid almost $500 for 2 tickets to this terribly pretentious show. The music - a band called Lawerence- shouts, yells, sometimes so loud it frightened people, not good. The "fiercely funny" show that we were sold on- not so much. The writing tried too hard to be clever and ended up with maybe two parts that were actually funny. Who is the target audience? East coast elite and Ivy League who think attending this kind of show makes them appear smart and cool. Don't waste your money- the show was not clever, the writing not funny, and the comedians were disappointing. The Horse was the only skit that was decent. Don't do it! read more

We went to this club for the first time and were very impressed. The front desk person was welcoming and helpful. We got yummy snacks and drinks before the show. The group of folks performing were fantastic; they took a story from an audience member and improvised lots of skits and scenes, all hilarious. I'm converted to improv comedy; so much more entertaining and enjoyable than watching someone rehearse Jokes. read more

I've taken improv levels 2-4 (currently in level 5 with the director of All Out) and have truly loved every moment of the learning experience. What makes All Out particularly wonderful is the inclusivity and safe space culture they foster (my level one experience at an improv place in nyc was far from this culture), the richness and thoughtfulness in the curriculum, and the improv forms and games they offer. This non profit is led by a seasoned af improv womxn who really sets the stage for why the All Out culture feels so welcoming for all backgrounds including folks whose gender, race, class, sexuality is the minority. Speaking of class-consciousness, they offer options to make taking classes accessible and once you are a student, you can hit up as many shows as possible for free. I plan to take the musical improv series beginning this summer. Location is nice and central and not too far from Bart and even First Fridays. Classes are throughout the week so additional accessibility for those with varying work schedules. Improv is arguably a special and needed lifeline to our authentic selves (like hella creative and playful activities really) and add a crap ton of relational connection, generosity, and laughter couched within openness and safety makes all of my experiences at All Out so dang sweet. What a terrific show!!!! I laughed my butt off! Went to the improv show tonight and it was a raucous good time. it started with some improv from folks who are newer to improv then ended with a group of professionals. I laughed so hard the whole time. What an amazing way to spend an evening and then we still had time after to go out for a drink and hang with friends. You do NOT want to miss a show. I've also taken classes with this organization and it was so affirming, fun, engaging, and challenging. The people here are amazing and welcoming. Came here for a short form show and found myself laughing a good deal. The theatre is relatively new but the performers are experienced. Improv is awesome, and I think lots of people could benefit from taking a course or just having some laughs. I've been told that improv is a great way to get over being too self-conscious, a way to learn to speak more freely. Tbh, though, I think it's in everybody and their mama's best interest that I self-censor... but I also think that everybody needs to visit All Out Comedy Theater for one of their Saturday night improv sets. I went with a friend this past Saturday and loved it! Every Saturday Night AOC has two, 90-minute shows with 10-minute intermissions (one at 7:30 pm, one at 9:30 pm). Advance tickets are $13 for adults, $9 for students, kid, seniors. At the door, tickets are $17/$12. According to their website the earlier 7:30 pm show is for all ages; the 9:30 pm showing is more "anything goes." I went to the 7:30 pm show and can vouch for a virtual lack of moments where you'd want to shield a little one's eyes/cover their ears. This does not mean, however, that you won't be holding your stomach from all the laughter! Colleen, Alexa, Sal and Adrian were the amazing, brilliant, talented folks who filled the evening with a number of hilarious improv games fueled by some really difficult audience suggestions (i.e. car seats made of cheese??). They were great sports, though, and managed to make everything work - they're a super impressive group!! At the end of the show you get a chance to chat for a bit and they also gave out $5 coupons for a future show! If you're looking for a fun place to spend a Saturday night, or a place to learn/brush up on your improv skills, AOC is definitely it! read more

Had a great time here. Best improv I've seen in a while. The actors were still willing to take a chance unlike a lot of other shows I've seen recently. The setting is like any small theater, but the small tables gives it a comedy club feel. Since it's bring your own drink--easy to do with The Good Hop Bar & Bottle Shop just a block way--it works out well. The area is much more livelier and abundant with restaurant and bar choices then other improv theaters. We'll be back. read more

Been here a few times and have always laughed my ass off. Not every show is perfect all the way through but there is always laughs to be had no matter what. All and all, totally worth the price and you can really tell the owners love what they are doing and really care. Will be back! read more

Every time I got to All out Comedy I have a blast. The shows are hilarious and they do just the right amount of asking for audience participation. Enough that you feel engaged but no so much that you feel like you've got to make up the story for them. These improvisers are hilarious! read more

Just graduated from Improv 101! Colleen taught the class and she did an exceptional job of it. Before I was in the city with another group; the main reason was timing and location, but I'm so glad i did. AOCT classes are much better taught (and smaller). From the onset Colleen had a naturally ability to lower her students anxiety thereby allowing us to explore without hesitation. This is a primary attribute Colleen's class had over the city class, in the city people were often self-conscious. Colleen really did a great job making a safe space for us to grow. In addition, Colleen's guided us through the first 5 rules of Improv; introduced via game play. These 'rules' are rules because they are typically what work well for progressing a scene/conversation, and making it humorous. Obviously, these aren't hard rules, you can break them. She was exceptional in guiding us through the outcomes of following and breaking the rules; most often not following the rules would kill or harm the conversation/scene. What is really cool about these rules is how well they work outside of class; by the 3rd class I was able to start using them in everyday conversation. Next stop... Improv 201. I highly recommend them for anyone who wants to get out of their shell, improve their interpersonal skills or just to have fun. This is a review of the class, which I took as a complete improv noob. I signed up hoping to improve my public speaking and get over the fear of speaking extemporaneously. The class really instilled confidence in me that my mouth will work and I will be semi-coherent, even with zero preparation. I also had a lot of fun and particularly enjoyed the diverse group who all worked harmoniously together. Colleen makes sure everyone is supported and engaged with her enthusiasm and good heart. If you're wondering whether it will be weird or awkward, it's totally not. I know many of the class members are coming back for the intermediate class, as am I. I've been to a range of improv theaters in the bay area and SF. This side of the bridge, All Out Comedy's Saturday night shows are my favourite for consistently being high quality, friendly and fun and reliably enjoyed by my non-improv friends or dates. For the Saturday night they pull on a range of performers linked to theaters from across the bay area and SF as well as Indie troupes. In addition, there are long-form shows on many Fridays. These delve into character more and will appeal to those who want something further from the 'Whose Line is It anyway' short-form game tradition. Definitely heaps of fun :) read more

Fun time. Great location. Went for 7:30pm show. It's BYOB which is great. There is an intermission so you can get something then. Only complaint is the lack of diversity, especially since it is in Oakland. Hope to see more POCs on stage next time. I'd like to try one of their free classes soon. read more

This class was a super awesome, eye opening experience in a lot of ways. Colleen did an amazing job of teaching what improv is all about: being in the moment, going with the flow and building energy in groups. It's totally interactive - each class is jam packed with fun improv exercises. Just like you'd go to the gym to strengthen your muscles, this class was like a mind-body workout, where you're strengthening your ability to engage with others in a playful manner. There really were no null moments. I'm very thankful to have taken this class; it's helped me add a little more "yes and" into my daily life. Thank you Colleen! read more

I have two separate reviews (all five stars): 1) The shows are AMAZING. If you buy the tickets online they are super cheap (the shows I went to were $5 and $8 for the tickets bought online which I thought was ridiculously cheap for a couple of hours of entertainment). If you add that you can BYOB it means that basically you can have a great night for $10 or so. Not sure where you can do that anywhere else in Oakland where at this point you can barely afford a beer out for that price. 2) The improv classes are the best! I am having so much fun I have no problems admitting that they are some of the highlights of my week. I was not sure I was going to like improv because I thought it was going to be nerve-wracking, but actually Colleen (owner/teacher) created such a friendly environment I am never nervous, I am never scared I am going to "do something wrong" (there is no wrong in improv!) and I am just having a blast and laughing for two and a half hours. If you add that a 6 weeks class is $200 it is really an amazing deal. She could easily charge $300 or $400 for the value we get, but you can tell she keeps the prices low because she is passiate about improv and wants to help the community! I highly recommend the classes to everyone (they also have free sessions you can try). I bet actually several of my friends are going to take the beginners class soon because I talk about improv all the time and now everyone is curious. Could not recommend enough! read more

I'm new to improv. I saw my third show tonight, over the last year. Cast members bring a variety of approach, each funny in their own way. Some skits use partial cast. The Sunday morning family show, "Once Upon Your Mind" is perfectly tuned to a child's perspective--starting from a storybook, the ensemble invents a whole world, and then invites the audience into it. I've seen shy kids emerge to dance wildly on stage, and parents get to play, too! The director, Colleen, has a sure hand in guiding kids into improv. When I have an under-10-year-old to entertain, I count on this guaranteed good time! read more

Really fun spot to watch improv and comedy, plus they have classes and sometimes on Sunday there's a show for little kids. I'm a big fan of Social Studies Improv who perform there regularly. It's a cheap date night and there's plenty of bars/restaurants nearby for before/after. read more

I know my improv comedy, and this theatre is amazing! The Rapid fire scenes with talented actors and comedians from all over the Bay Area keeps you laughing for all 90 minutes. It's a great community feel at the show and it's a great part of the Oakland community. It's also a nice and cozy theatre for a date night, but also has enough space for large parties.
