Buy online. Pick up ticket stubs from the booth. Show vax cards. Present ticket stubs to enter the theater. There are scheduled Thursdays that you get to pay as you want. We had seen Grease and this time Into The Woods. A great way to expose the kids to theater.

Took my 13yo daughter and her friend to see Lin Manuel Miranda's In the Heights and it was FANTASTIC!!!!!!! We drove 90 miles for this production and it was absolutely worth it. We typically attend theater at SJ Performing Arts, but Berkeley has all the talent, but also the small, intimate old world feel. Even the smell of the old wood building was charming! I cried the entire 2nd half of the musical. The passion of the actors was incredible. Highly recommend!

What an incredibly fun performance of James and the Giant Peach! Lots of delight and laughs over these few hours. The cast was fantastic, the music made me want to sing along despite not knowing any of it beforehand ("Right Before Your Eyes" got stuck in my head for a bit), and the costumes/sets/production were all great as well! Special shoutouts to: + Ladahlord (James D Sasser): such engaging facial expressions! As someone who worked a bit on facial expressions as part of a choir, I really appreciated how enthusiastic he was. + James (Elliot Choate): the star of the show! Lots of solo parts and he did wonderfully + The two aunts: convincingly evil, and I'm not sure how the guy managed to walk around in his stiletto heels for so long! + The cast of bugs: I could definitely see the distinct personalities of each character This was my first time at the Berkeley Playhouse and it was overall a great experience. Lots of friendly people working here - the man at the ticket booth greeted the lady in front of me by name. TIPS: * Don't forget to check in for a free coffee or soda with your Adult ticket! * If the lines for the restroom and snack bar are too long at intermission, there's a coffee shop right across the street that stays open pretty late. Hoping they have Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (my favorite Roald Dahl tale) sometime in the future here!

"One of the most groundbreaking and romantic musicals ever written, West Side Story resets Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet to the 1950s and the turbulent and passionate streets of New York's West Side. Tony is a dreamer, ready to leave his street gang behind and face the future head-on; Maria is idealistic and looking to explore womanhood and the world beyond her family's dress shop. When the two meet, their worlds stop--and cultural divides and societal expectations give way to star-crossed love. Featuring one of the most exciting scores ever written for the stage, and a story that tackles topics of prejudice, street violence, and the need for compassion between communities, this Berkeley Playhouse premiere will rumble in your heart long after the final note is sung."

It's pretty easy to get here and there seems to be plenty of parking in the area, seems to be in a very residential area (hard to tell as it was dark and raining) which gives it a more homely feeling. When you get there, it's a cute little theater. There aren't any bad seats here as far as I can tell. It's not quite stadium style seating so if you have a really tall person in front of you and you aren't the biggest it may be an issue. Also some if someone spills something, it rolls all the way down from the back!

(In Terminator Voice): I'LL BE BACK! Date night! Yeah, after a 16 months of have a long distance relationship with my husband he has lots of date night catching up to do! Lucky for both of us, we enjoy going new places. So when my boss mentioned this playhouse in Berkeley and a wonderful showing of "Guys and Dolls" he saw there, I looked in to it. Funcheapsf.com had $5 tickets for the musical at the beginning of the month but our $35 tickets weren't unreasonable. Neither of us had ever seen the production before. We left there very happy. We both agreed that we enjoy plays more than musicals, but all of the performers did an amazing job. Parking was kind of a hassle. We asked about garages but were told street parking is easy during the week. We didn't find it all that easy but ended up getting a spot relatively close - it just took a while. The playhouse itself is really nice. it's much bigger than the one in Point Richmond (I was expecting something similar, but should have gone in with no expectations). This one is very nice. They allow food inside the actual playroom itself. Concessions are sold just outside of here. Good thing too because we needed a slice of the pizza they had at the Intermission. The prices were fair on all the goodies. Husband ate most of the pizza (the slice was pretty small $4) and I had a Cutie for $0.50. Water was free in the corner and they ask that you don't bring your own water bottle (not sure why). Bins are set up for compost, recycling, and trash. And also one bin for donations (food) so read the signs and don't just start throwing your pizza plate wherever you want. Like my husband :) We'll definitely be back to see another show here. Not a bad seat in the house!!

Ask the Community - Berkeley Playhouse

Is it air conditioned?

Yep.

Has anyone been involved with the "Kidstage" and/or other youth productions? How did you find the experience? Thinking about it for my daughter (age 10) but it's expensive. I guess I want a more specific review about the school side.

Danspace is nurturing, encouraging, and most importantly, they value your kid's health far more than any other studio in the bay area. Your kid will come away from ballet with lasting technique and higher self-esteem, not lower. There is no recital mania at Danspace--the emphasis is on teaching, not performance, so while there are performance opportunities, you will not have to shell out for fifty bazillion sequined leotards and tutus. Look up at the ceiling, and around at the walls. Head up the curving staircase! Snap a photo of the marquee and the tall neon sign. The building is opulent! It's very close to BART, so it makes transportation to the venue a breeze. Avoid driving or you're likely to get your car broken into like I did when I came to a Yelp Elite Event nearby. :( Also, take note, they have a very strict no outside food or drinks policy. I had a very tiny purse, and I had a small package of crackers from Colombia my friend had just gifted me, and the staff took them off me! I also had a chomp stick and a package of roasted chestnuts. (I hadn't had dinner and was worried we wouldn't have time to eat before the show, so I packed a couple of tiny snacks in my bag). The door person was super nice and she said she'd hold them for me until after the show. Unfortunately, after the show, she went to get them from the locked ticket booth and someone took them! So a fellow staff member snatched my snacks. That's pretty messed up. I mean, I should have looked up the policy before I attended, but it's also pretty messed up that a staff member took my stuff after they were being held for me. The staff member said she had it with her own stuff; she was very surprised that they went missing as well. Other than the snack snafu, the seats were very comfortable and the pitch between the seats is generous! There was so much leg room! Plus, I didn't feel cramped at the shoulders. This is such a rarity for a theater and deserves mentioning! There are bathrooms both upstairs and downstairs. Overall, this is a great venue with a convenient BART accessible location! I'll be back.

We arrived early this past Saturday, so street parking was available right in front. The small entry line went quickly at opening time, and once we stepped inside, we were enchanted by the maze-like setting inside, the most beautiful maze I've ever encountered. Colorful gardens with vibrant flowers and greenery, sculptures and fountains, winding pathways and staircases and hidden nooks, where music and artists of all kinds could be found in the most unexpected places on three different levels. Mainly ethereal melodies could be heard throughout, soundscapes, shamanistic and experimental music, a little bit of pop but no recognizable genre. An opportunity for the audience to connect with the beauty of the instruments being played. There were indeed a wide range of instruments utilized during the event, both traditional and uncommon, including the marimba, synthesizer, cocktail drum kit, tuba, xylophone, native recorder, hurdy gurdy, ocarina (death whistle), violin, cello, tambourine, shakers, french horn, melodica, accordian, japanese mouth organ (made of bamboo pipes), harp, bass, saxophone (quartet), dueling digital pianos, kelp horns, pine cones played with a violin bow, and even a parrot perched in an enclosure with a microphone near its beak. A few more that stood out to me were Edward Schocker with resonant glass sounds from cylinder containers filled with water, the mesmerizing performance of Pamela Z. creating engaging tunes with the theramin, vocals, and looping, and the work of sound alchemist, Laura Inserra, in the Garden of Eternal Wisdom, which was personally enjoyable and inspiring. There were a few food trucks out front with outdoor seating and tables set up, so we grabbed some dinner while at the event, a steak quesadilla from La Casita Del Guero and a lamb gyro from Halal Bites. Bracelets allowed for in-and-out flexibility, so guests could eat dinner off site and return, too. Restrooms were available inside the building as well as porta potties outside. I have nothing but good things to say about this place and our experience. It was delightful and therapeutic, and I'm pretty sure my musician bf got more than he expected out of his time here, a dream for instrumentalists and music lovers alike.

As I get older, dealing with the crowds and being in the pit isn't for me anymore. Luckily we were able to grab a seat at their viewing deck located on the top left of the stage. It had a few levels with seats and a bar type thing to put food and drinks on. It was honestly the most comfortable I've been at a concert. Nobody in front or behind us, and so much room! Although I ate a hefty snack before the event, I still ended up with some tater tots, nachos, and couple of beers. I think for 2 drinks and the nachos it was close to $60 with tip, so definitely normal for concert venue prices. The nacho cheese was cold but oh well I still enjoyed them. Definitely looking forward to returning in October to see Jungle!
