I've been going to The Back Room for over 5 years as it's generally a nice place to see music, but I've become increasingly concerned about the cleanliness and condition, as well as the owner's behavior. The main space is acoustically great and the venue is certainly intimate as others have noted. The sound system, run by Sam, is hit or miss, often having buzzing or other issues that he doesn't seem to care about. Cables are almost always a mess and there's usually a pile of drums in the corner of the stage, which is rather unprofessional. It never looks great. The furniture (couches) are certainly cozy but I doubt they get cleaned at all, let alone regularly. So, if you want to sit on a public couch, knock yourself out. Enter the kitchen or either of the two bathrooms and you'll immediately get the sense that someone lives at the venue. The first bathroom has a shower and usually has pill bottles, personal hygiene products, and other materials out in the open. It's never very clean and feels more like a dormitory bathroom than anything that belongs in a public music venue. It's not unusual for the office space to reek of a certain kind of smoke. Sam, as hard as he tries, has a a sort of unsettling presence and on several occasions I've seen him insist on sitting in with artists who don't seem to want him there - sometimes playing bongos, sometimes playing piano, and rarely fitting into the music very well (overplaying, playing too loudly, etc). I'd be really thrilled if Sam could clean up this space, including the back areas, and be a little bit more conscious of the way he addresses the crowd and how much figurative "space" he takes up.

Had a great time listening and dancing to Jazz Vocalist Yolandra Rhodes and The Rhodes Scholars. Intimate venue, great acoustics and ability to bring your own food and drinks. I'll be back. I have a new fav artist! Thank you Yolandra

Happened about this low key music spot in Berkeley this weekend and was pleasantly surprised. They have a great acoustic setup and casual seating with arrows of loungers, couches and various chairs for first come first serve seating. Tickets were $18 for presale online and $20 at the door. They are byob/d with most folks bringing their own beverages. It does look like a home's back room turned into a performance venue. We had a chance to see the lab rats perform their Bay Area demo with a Sacramento band French 75 joining them. The music was definitely the focus and everyone in the audience was really passionate about music - great to find a community like this in Berkeley. It does get a bit warm inside so dress in layers. Probably good to come a bit early so you can snag some couch seats. Parking was available on the street. Tip: There are quite a few Japanese restaurants around the corner from the venue and make for a good pre show dinner spot.

We came here one Friday night to listen to a friend's band and were pleasantly surprised to find this hidden gem on a little side street across near my favorite place Butcher's Son. It looks like a tiny little cottage from outside, but when you walk in it's been made into a cozy event venue with great acoustics, comfy love seats and a little stage in the corner. The owner was friendly and even jumped in to play with the band in the end. How fun! Fun place to check out when looking for live music in downtown Berkeley that doesn't break the bank. Also, it's BYOB.

A reason to live in Berkeley. Very informal, as you like, but the acoustics are amazing and the talent even more so.

I'd never been to a Berkeley Repertory show until this year. I'm surprised because I'm such a big…read moretheatre nerd. I was served an ad on Instagram for Arthur Miller's All My Sons in March 2026. It stars Jimmy Smits (of Star Wars and the West Wing fame! That's my President Santos and Bail Organa!) and his wife Wanda DeJesus. Such big names! I took my mom to a weekday matinee. It was a packed house and skewed older (hey, it was a weekday.) The theatre was clean and intimate. There was no bad seat in there! They did have a young person's discount if you're under 35 which was nice (if you're under 35.) Maybe if Berkeley built more housing, the city would be more welcoming and inclusive to young people and there wouldn't be that discount. Bathrooms were clean. After the show (which was a tearjerker), there was a Postshow Discussion with a docent (a UC Berkeley grad student.) It was fun discussing the show with other attendees who stayed. It was like a book club! Intimate and inclusive, and then there was a surprise--Jimmy Smits and Wanda DeJesus came to listen and contribute to the conversation! (And then do autographs and photographs.) Berkeley Repertory is a community hub. I appreciate their shows and the discussions they evoke (and the space they provide to have said discussions.) The SF Chronicle raved about All My Sons and I could not rave about it more either! Time to reread Arthur Miller and also support local theatre!

I know this is a late review, but I…read morewatched Hedwig and the Angry Inch in their final days of performances, and omg I loved it! I never seen the play before and only read a quick synopsis of it online before going in. The soundtrack for this play was awesome, the band was amazing and vocals were beautiful. Pangaea and Elizabeth are so talented. Again I've never seen this show and didn't know what to expect, but I have to say that Elizabeth's voice was so surprisingly angelic and pure. If I'm correct, I think I read that it was her first time performing at Shotgun? I hope everyone who performed sees this and knows they killed it! Shotgun as a venue provided such an intimate setting, and I loved being so up close to the action (and emotion!). I don't think there is a single bad seat in this theater. As a petite girlie I am so thankful that the seats are staggered upwards toward the back. My favorite type of seating. At bigger venues, where ticket prices are much higher, I need a booster seat (no joke) and sometimes think to myself if you're so far away that you might as well wait to watch it at home...But not here, you experience what makes live theater great! I also greatly appreciate that they had their own concession menu that isn't overpriced, along with a fun cocktail menu tailored to the show! Every time they show a new play they paint over the front of the building to display the play currently taking place, which I thought was cool. If you're passing by this area it's always nice to see what sort of new art pops up for the next play. I can't think of a single bad thing to say. Bravo to this local live theater!
