This is my go-to neighborhood bar every time I head back up to Northern California to visit family. Great staff, solid drinks, decent prices, and karaoke from Wed to Sat. Whenever we go, it's mainly an older crowd. I don't mind. The aunties and uncles who go are all solid. I usually befriend a ton of them, and we all dance on the dance floor. Divey, but there's a touch of (dated) class with the decor. Don't take this as a diss. I love it. It's super cozy and comfortable. We usually grab a couple of rounds, sing some songs, and then mosey our way down to Nations for some post-drinking grub. It's a perfect, chill night. Don't sleep on Mel-O-Dee! It's an El Cerrito staple, even as the city evolves due to gentrification.

Had family and friends come watch the football games with me for my bday. Multiple TV's to watch all the games. Cool owner (even tho he's a Raider fan) and the bar tender makes a MEAN DRINK!!! Was able to bring food in and my sisters brought a crock pot to warm up cheese for nachos or cheese fries for the whole bar. Very friendly place to go.

This is one of the most famous neighborhood bars for the neighborhood of El Cerrito California. It's been around so many years and they take care of the customer and it's the best prices around and the greatest crowds for karaoke and friends.

Oh wow, this vintage watering hole is a major throwback deep into the last century when men in gray flannel suits and matching porkpie hats patronized their neighborhood bars to share their troubles with the bartender. If you saw any sitcom back between the Eisenhower and Reagan years, there was always a scene in a bar like this where the misunderstood husband plots with his best friend on how to get back at his wife for carelessly overspending their household budget. Jamie W. and I discovered this spot quite by accident after shopping at Trader Joe's. I have to admit I was intrigued by the retro sign and the fact that you can't see anything inside until you enter the side door where of course, the bouncer checks for your ID. Inside it was like something out of that sitcom with regulars talking over each other just a little too loudly as they were downing various well drinks. Jamie W. and I fit right in by ordering $8 Makers Marks and Ginger (photo: http://bit.ly/2L65uXH). They have a back room with red paisley wallpaper and quite an elaborate karaoke set-up. We have yet to make it for karaoke but give us time...and enough Makers Marks and Gingers. Mel-o-Dee...oh wait, I get it now. DRINKS - 4 stars...not watered down, thank goodness AMBIANCE - 4 stars...mid-century throwback, love it SERVICE - 3 stars...not sure I'd share my troubles with him but certainly friendly enough TOTAL - 4 stars...drop the mic RELATED - Looking for libations? The drinks are strong and reasonably priced. The staff is welcoming and nice. We had a great time singing karaoke for my friend's wedding after-party. While not in a typical place for a bar, this bar is top notch, and I can't wait to come back.

You take your foot off the gas. Club Mallard. You need to know. The interior is dark and warm and full of dead birds. Mounted, taxidermied, presiding over the room with the glassy authority of creatures who didn't expect to end up in a bar in Albany but have made their peace with it. The effect is somewhere between hunting lodge and natural history museum after hours, and it shouldn't work on San Pablo Avenue but it does, completely, the way any sufficiently committed aesthetic decision will eventually override its context. I've been once. Midweek happy hour. This is the most honest way to evaluate a bar -- no weekend crowd to inflate the energy, no event to justify the turnout, just the place and whoever shows up on a Tuesday because they want to be there. The happy hour is good. The bartender was gregarious and present and seemed to actually like the job, which sounds like a low bar until you've spent enough time on the other side of it. The regulars were friendly in the East Bay way, which is to say they talked to us without needing anything from us, offered opinions on what to drink, and went back to their conversations. There's an outdoor space for when you want sky. I've driven past since and seen it packed. I was glad. You root for a place like Club Mallard the way you root for any small enterprise that decided to be something specific in a landscape of sameness, and then just held the line.

I've been coming here a bit more regularly, lately - more visits in the last year compared to the previous decade, in fact. Now I wonder what I was waiting for. According to the East Bay Express, Schmidt's Pub is "basically your living room, but better" - that does sum it up, except that very few of us have living rooms anything like this, with a cozy fireplace surrounded by comfy armchairs and rustic tables beside sunny windows. Not many of us have living rooms with Old Speckled Hen on tap, or populated with an entertaining parade of quirky folk and friendly dogs. If the people and dogs are not entertaining enough then pick up a copy of Calvin and Hobbes or A History of Clay Pipes (okay, I made that one up) and have a little retreat with a pint. 4/5 Green Stars for social and environmental impact, based on these factors: * Beer on tap (transported in reusable kegs) has a much lower footprint compared to bottles or cans. * Allows you to bring your own food, which is good for folk like vegans who are often more comfortable with BYO. * The snacks available at the counter could be a bit more Berkeley (or Albany)! They were mostly from big corps - Lays chips (PepsiCo) and chocolate bars from Mars. Would be nice to see a more imaginative/ethical selection. * A great community space with an inclusive atmosphere. Schmidt's is home to many groups (e.g., knitting) and provides a second family for many, some who send postcards from their trips! * Finally, we shouldn't underestimate the importance of having a place to slow down, reflect and connect with each other a little. In that respect, Schmidt's Pub is worth its weight in gold.

The menu changes regularly, which keeps things interesting, but one thing that never changes is the consistently excellent service. One of my favorite things about this spot is how dog-friendly it is. The owner's dog is practically the co-owner of the bar and is often lounging around, adding even more personality to the experience. If you are lucky enough to meet him, just know the dog has standards. The dog only accepts meat, so do not bother offering him the tortilla from your taco. Trust me, you will be judged. Another major perk is that they allow outside food. Conveniently, there is a taco truck right next door serving some of the best carnitas tacos around, making it easy to pair great food with great drinks. Also, keep an eye on the TVs. They always seem to be playing some delightfully over-the-top late-night movie programming that inevitably sparks random conversations and plenty of laughter among the crowd. Overall, this is a fantastic neighborhood bar with a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere and a ton of personality. It can get crowded, so try to grab a spot early if you can. You'll notice plenty of regulars who come back again and again, and to me, that is always one of the best signs that a place is doing something right.

Their beer isn't as weird as they may sound. If you did a blind tasting without looking at the names of the beer, you might not even notice the subtle flavors like hojicha cream ale or Vietnamese coffee lager. I like that these names/descriptions are Asian. I liked most of the local comedians they had. My only complaint is the people sitting near us were talking too loudly and I couldn't always hear the comedians. I wish the earlier comedians would've made a joke about the noise level to make them stop talking so loudly. Street parking was surprisingly easy to find in this area. The restaurant next door, 310, can deliver food through the hidden door between the two businesses. I think this place would be great for a date night or girls night out / boys night out. I had two IPA in timeframe of 2 and half hours. Things were okay until I bought a food (chatpate) from the food truck just outside at the door of the Bar. I took the food inside (it's allowed). I had couple of spoons and I needed to go to Bathroom. I asked for paper napkins and covered the food so that they won't throw it ( that's what I learned the American culture is, at least california). I came back from the bathroom within few minutes, my food was gone. I asked a lady bartender about it and she said she doesn't know and I suppose not to keep food like that. I told her I asked for the paper napkins and covered it to protect it. she went paper napkins doesn't protect food'. I am like that's what I learned is an American culture. She left. I of course wasn't happy but I was still okay wanted to order my final beer. And this guy came. I was normal and since I thought he is a cool guy I could talk to him. I said ' I would like to order another beer and I have a small complaint to make'. He got pissed off immediately and goes 'I don't listen your complaint now, I can't' very rudely. Then he still had time to keep waking around and giving me his eyes and trying to intimidate me. And he said I was too drunk to make a complaint lmao. That was too much to handle for me. I told him I also work on costumer service and this is not the way you treat your costumer. And called security in me?? That was too over react of him and pissd me off totally. I simply told him he is and a**h*le and his IS a complete jerk. Doesn't deserve at all to be in costumer service profession. The security guy didn't find any possible threat so he left. OH! And I asked his name because I didn't wanna blame the whole business for his poor work ethics. He denied to say and thought I would take his picture so that people would know and he called security again. No one said sorry once for my food lost, not a word 'sorry' for a costumer's inconvenience. PS: my first time experience was pretty smooth. He wasn't the bar tender. There was another lady, I had 5-7 (I don't remember) IPAs and tipped her 30-100% every drink I bought. Working in a costumer service and relying on tips I understand how important it is for workers like us. And the Bar is owned by a Nepali-American and being a member of same community I always try to support the business own by community people. Having plenty of great options in El Cerito, East Bay Area, I had to choose this one, stupid me !
