I went here the other Sunday for a quick minute or so with a few friends. Used to be a frequent flier here but not for a long time . Hasn't changed a bit I'll have to say . A pl as ce to listen have a beer a fish and chips ,Shepard pie or maybe a wine . Service is quick the atmosphere is definitely all Irish so I'm not never really noticed before but it's still fine with me .Lovely place singing going on and music right in downtown Bezerkly have to love it .

Great community of folks here & especially love coming for trivia nights hosted my Ms. Jenna!! It's a blend of old time regulars, college kids, artists and everyone in between is welcomed. There's a variety of events hosted making it a real staple and cultural hub. The bar serves up beer, cider, wines and some non alcoholic options like tea and soda, while the kitchen cooks up classics like fish & chips, Mac & cheese, and a rotating menus of deliciousness. The compassionate crew tops it off and deserve recognition for all their hard work!

Great local Berkeley bar serving beer and wine only. There's also spoken word on Wednesday nights. I ordered the fish and chips and fried chicken wings. I also enjoyed a glass of Cabernet and a singha beer draft. Yum.

I have been to The Starry Plough Pub during several Saint Patrick's Day Celebrations. This is an Irish bar with reasonable prices (for this day and age). I was able to find a dry cider--yum! What a celebration this 2023 Saint Paytrick Day was!!! It was standing room only. They had Irish bands, Irish dancers, and it was an open mike for singing Irish songs. They offer foods like Corned Beef and Cabbage, Fish and Chips, and Bacon Cheseburger, but we had dinner before going there. They looked good, though. The Starry Plough is a hangout for Irish and Irish wanna bes. They have live music, Irish music, and even Irish dancing.

This place is awesome. They have fantastic food and great selection of drinks. Everyone is supper nice and friendly. Great music and a perfect way to spend a night.

Ask the Community - The Starry Plough

I'm an older adult that loves music and mingling with people but also like finding adults like myself to chat with. Is this a mostly young people atmosphere? Or is there a mixed age place?

What a great question for The Starry Plough! As an example I had the best St. Paddy's night ever at The Starry Plough this last St. Paddy's Day, and was raving to my friends (I am 68), that it was such a positive atmosphere with a wide range of… Read more

A must-visit place for anyone living in the area (4/5 Green Stars)…read moreBring cash! That's the first rule of Schmidt's Pub. Maybe it's the only rule! I've been coming here a bit more regularly, lately - more visits in the last year compared to the previous decade, in fact. Now I wonder what I was waiting for. According to the East Bay Express, Schmidt's Pub is "basically your living room, but better" - that does sum it up, except that very few of us have living rooms anything like this, with a cozy fireplace surrounded by comfy armchairs and rustic tables beside sunny windows. Not many of us have living rooms with Old Speckled Hen on tap, or populated with an entertaining parade of quirky folk and friendly dogs. If the people and dogs are not entertaining enough then pick up a copy of Calvin and Hobbes or A History of Clay Pipes (okay, I made that one up) and have a little retreat with a pint. 4/5 Green Stars for social and environmental impact, based on these factors: * Beer on tap (transported in reusable kegs) has a much lower footprint compared to bottles or cans. * Allows you to bring your own food, which is good for folk like vegans who are often more comfortable with BYO. * The snacks available at the counter could be a bit more Berkeley (or Albany)! They were mostly from big corps - Lays chips (PepsiCo) and chocolate bars from Mars. Would be nice to see a more imaginative/ethical selection. * A great community space with an inclusive atmosphere. Schmidt's is home to many groups (e.g., knitting) and provides a second family for many, some who send postcards from their trips! * Finally, we shouldn't underestimate the importance of having a place to slow down, reflect and connect with each other a little. In that respect, Schmidt's Pub is worth its weight in gold.

The beer selection is quite good: they have a number of solid beers on draft like Old Speckled Hen and Kilkenny. The service was also good: we were greeted and seated promptly, and our server checked in on us frequently. I really liked the food. I got the beef pastie and it was a nice comfort food on a cool foggy Half Moon Bay evening. The beef and peas were well seasoned, the pastry was nice, and the gravy was tasty. My wife got the artichoke soup and was blown away. It was rich, a little creamy, and very flavorful. I also appreciated the bread bowl it was in had a toasted top. Besides the food, I truly believe our experience was overall great because of our server, Rachel! Rachel was so kind, and communicative. We talked a bit about where we were from and what we do as our jobs, and it was just really nice to talk to a server that views us customers like people. It was great to slow down and just talk. I ordered a tea (it was as it should be basic and unsweetened with a slice of lemon), 1/2 pound of wings. Dry rub with blue cheese. The rub was good. Not salty not over powdered. Cooked well and had 3-4 small sticks of celery and a really good bleat cheese (may have had fresh dill in it). Pretty delicious actually. The 1/2 pound of wings kinda surprised me because it was 2 flats and 2 drums. 4 in total. Thought maybe I'd get at least 6. Deviled eggs. They looked soooo good. I liked how they had a lil of the deviled egg filling on bottom of the deviled eggs so they wouldn't wobble around. The amount of filling was high and was ok in taste. The mayo or something they used in it was on the sweeter side. The other people in my party loved them but too sweet for me. I tried some of my friend's Carnitas Nachos. They were goood. A very generous helping of nachos. I tried my friends spicy non alcoholic drink and it was really good! Bathroom was clean.

Every dish was beautifully plated but, more importantly, actually delicious. You can tell there's real attention to detail in every course. The highlights for us were the perfectly cooked beef dish with the rich sauce and potato gratin, the risotto, the strawberry tart dessert, and honestly the bread service alone deserves recognition. Even the little sweets at the end felt special. Great wine selection too, which made it perfect for an anniversary dinner. Service was polished, attentive, and professional without feeling overly formal or uncomfortable. The only downside was the reservation/seating situation. We weren't able to get reservations and ended up seated outside on a pretty cold evening. Thankfully the heaters helped a lot, so it was still comfortable, but it did feel a little odd seeing the dining room only about half full while outdoor guests stayed outside. Also worth mentioning: this place is definitely pricey. Not somewhere we'd casually stop into on a random Tuesday. But for a special occasion like an anniversary, the overall experience, atmosphere, presentation, and quality made it feel worth it. We'd absolutely come back again -- just with reservations next time.
