I was looking for an excuse to patronize this Irish pub and thought I found one when I started developing a wintertime hankering for Irish coffee. Alas, when Jamie W and I popped over after our gym routine, we asked for one only to discover they don't have a full liquor license by choice. The owners want to keep the peace with their mostly residential neighbors. I get it, but I did miss my whiskey. Instead we got our $11 pints of Guinness and we most certainly weren't disappointed (Photo 6). In fact, it got us in such a Gaelic mood that we decided to have lunch here and ordered the $18 plate of Corned Beef & Cabbage. It was a welcome sight when it arrived, but I have to share that the four thick slices were on the tough side. The cabbage and braised carrots were gratefully better. The standout though was probably the mashed potatoes topped with green onions (Photo 8). That was because it reminded me of comfort food from the days of yore since my yore is further back than most. The vibe was certainly convivial enough, though we were here just after they opened on Saturday. I imagine it must get quite festive when there's live music and the community gathers. FOOD / DRINK - 3 stars...corned beef kinda tough, whiskey was missing AMBIANCE - 3 stars...definitely a pub but too early to enjoy SERVICE - 3.5 stars...the guys are nice here TOTAL - 3 stars...well check them out when musicians are in the house RELATED - Exploring Berkeley? I went here the other Sunday for a quick minute or so with a few friends. Used to be a frequent flier here but not for a long time . Hasn't changed a bit I'll have to say . A pl as ce to listen have a beer a fish and chips ,Shepard pie or maybe a wine . Service is quick the atmosphere is definitely all Irish so I'm not never really noticed before but it's still fine with me .Lovely place singing going on and music right in downtown Bezerkly have to love it .

Great community of folks here & especially love coming for trivia nights hosted my Ms. Jenna!! It's a blend of old time regulars, college kids, artists and everyone in between is welcomed. There's a variety of events hosted making it a real staple and cultural hub. The bar serves up beer, cider, wines and some non alcoholic options like tea and soda, while the kitchen cooks up classics like fish & chips, Mac & cheese, and a rotating menus of deliciousness. The compassionate crew tops it off and deserve recognition for all their hard work!

Great local Berkeley bar serving beer and wine only. There's also spoken word on Wednesday nights. I ordered the fish and chips and fried chicken wings. I also enjoyed a glass of Cabernet and a singha beer draft. Yum.

Had an amazing time with my kids celebrating here on St Patty's Day! Great food and drink menu, authentic. Super organized staff! Great ambiance. Easy street parking.

Ask the Community - The Starry Plough

I'm an older adult that loves music and mingling with people but also like finding adults like myself to chat with. Is this a mostly young people atmosphere? Or is there a mixed age place?

What a great question for The Starry Plough! As an example I had the best St. Paddy's night ever at The Starry Plough this last St. Paddy's Day, and was raving to my friends (I am 68), that it was such a positive atmosphere with a wide range of…

The food is great as well and he has NOT raised his prices by much over the years. Whereas most of the other restaurants in town and up and down the coast have raised prices, the portion sizes have gotten smaller and there are no longer any local discounts. Also remember that this is PUB food, so people shouldn't expect Michelin Star dishes. There are so many great dishes on the menu that I can't even quote them all (favorites of mine are the chili, onion ring tower, burgers/fries and the fish and chips. It is good down home family fun for all and he also has sports on all of the time on multiple tv's. This truly is a hidden gem and time capsule that has survived for decades and will probably keep going strong long after some of these high priced, fancy food places have gone out of business. This truly is the Disneyland of PUBS in the US. I highly recommend checking out this pub because you're gonna get a lot more than just food and drink!

I remember taking the kids here when they were little and that was over 10 years ago…read more We came over from over the East Bay to beat the heat and brought our pup. When trying to decide where to get dinner on Main Street, we couldn't make a decision. My husband suggested Cameron's so we drove over. Dog Friendly: Lucked out with a spot in front of the patio! Lucked out with a table (anywhere) to sit with our dog. They offer water bowls and toys to play with while we're dining. My dog was able to chill for the most part (larger dogs make our rescue pup nervous) but he liked the couple behind us. Eclectic: It's a cool place with different dining areas. They were setting up for Karaoke (Friday/Saturday nights). There's so much to explore with all the knick knacks. The playlist in the dining room area was a wide range of music - I don't know how to explain it but you're listening to "It's a Small World" and then "Sweet Caroline!" You have to see it for yourself. The gender assigned restrooms are located in between the pinball machines. I literally walked outside and then walked back in when I finally found it and was embarrassed! Food: We split the special of the day - prime rib sandwich, but my husband was still hungry and we split a sampler platter. The food was what I expected - pub grub but it was worth it with the vibe. Drink: I usually don't drink but their cocktails were really good. I forgot what I had but it was the rum based drink. Overall, I hope I don't wait another 10 years to return - that was a great ending to our day trip to Half Moon Bay.

The only thing is this one shorter heavy set woman with a bun (I think she is a manager). She should not work customer service, because she is not a very friendly person. To start, they didn't have a single British beer on the menu. Guinness is Irish, not British, so that was already a letdown. On top of that, they were out of Scotch--pretty surprising for a pub. The service was friendly, and our server was very sweet and apologetic, but it was clear he had not been properly trained and didn't seem familiar with the menu. It took multiple trips to our table just to clarify that the clam chowder did not contain meatballs; the other soup of the day was meatball soup. Even then, the explanation we got was confusing. We also asked for our soup to come before the entrées, but everything arrived at the same time. As for the food, three of us ordered the fish and chips, and it was disappointing. The fries were cold and soggy, and the fish was soggy on the bottom where it sat on the fries. The fish itself seemed decent and tasted fine, but it was not prepared well. One person had the burger and had no complaints, and another had the shrimp scampi pasta, which looked good and seemed to be enjoyed. Overall, the experience just didn't live up to expectations.

I never waited in the beverage line for more than a few minutes. Food was ordered at the bar and servers ran it out. Several TVs inside along the wall, a large projector screen on the east wall, and a 65" outside all displayed the game. The sound was good too. I had no difficulty hearing the match over the noise of the crowded venue. Water was supplied next to the bar and was self service. It was constantly kept full. I never saw it empty. My wife and I had just visited Abbey Tavern this past weekend, a premier Scottish pub in the City, and we expected a similar atmosphere. However, the moment we showed up, we were met with great disappointment. The Goose & Fern is honestly a terrible place to watch a sports match: there was only a single TV mounted in the back corner of the restaurant, the TV wasn't particularly large, and the speakers had been turned completely off. What a bust. Although the food was decent, especially the Shepherd's pie -- which came piping hot in a small cast iron skillet, the service was downright dreadful and almost non-existent. We never received waters (or were even asked if we wanted beverages), our table wasn't given enough silverware, we were never checked on during the meal, and we were waiting around for 30 minutes twiddling our thumbs before somebody from our party finally went up to try to pay for the check. In hindsight, a tip was not warranted for the lack of service. Overall, Yelp grossly misled me on The Goose & Fern. This is not a spot I would stop by again to watch a sporting match. If you're in this part of Santa Rosa, do yourself a favor and head over to Dave and Busters down the street where they have a bunch of massive screens, tons of beer options, and service that will far surpass what you're getting here.
