Starry Salad

Lovely Thursday evening at the Plough, on Shattuck, in South Berkeley. Food, ambiance, service all top-notch. We went for Thursday night trivia (starts at 6:30) and we were happy to arrive just before 6pm, as almost all tables and bar spots were taken. A properly poured Guinness was a great way to start. We had the Fish and Chips as well as the Starry Salad, and both did not disappoint. I was honestly ready for mediocre fish and chips, but the fish was perfectly fried and came with fantastic home-cut looking fries. Homemade tartar sauce on the side for the fish was delish. The salad was big and green, not many additions, but just enough. Happy to make it to our local pub and will surely come back again for more trivia and music.

I was looking for an excuse to patronize this Irish pub and thought I found one when I started developing a wintertime hankering for Irish coffee. Alas, when Jamie W and I popped over after our gym routine, we asked for one only to discover they don't have a full liquor license by choice. The owners want to keep the peace with their mostly residential neighbors. I get it, but I did miss my whiskey. Instead we got our $11 pints of Guinness and we most certainly weren't disappointed (Photo 6). In fact, it got us in such a Gaelic mood that we decided to have lunch here and ordered the $18 plate of Corned Beef & Cabbage. It was a welcome sight when it arrived, but I have to share that the four thick slices were on the tough side. The cabbage and braised carrots were gratefully better. The standout though was probably the mashed potatoes topped with green onions (Photo 8). That was because it reminded me of comfort food from the days of yore since my yore is further back than most. The vibe was certainly convivial enough, though we were here just after they opened on Saturday. I imagine it must get quite festive when there's live music and the community gathers. FOOD / DRINK - 3 stars...corned beef kinda tough, whiskey was missing AMBIANCE - 3 stars...definitely a pub but too early to enjoy SERVICE - 3.5 stars...the guys are nice here TOTAL - 3 stars...well check them out when musicians are in the house RELATED - Exploring Berkeley? Service is quick the atmosphere is definitely all Irish so I'm not never really noticed before but it's still fine with me .Lovely place singing going on and music right in downtown Bezerkly have to love it .

Great community of folks here & especially love coming for trivia nights hosted my Ms. Jenna!! It's a blend of old time regulars, college kids, artists and everyone in between is welcomed. There's a variety of events hosted making it a real staple and cultural hub. The bar serves up beer, cider, wines and some non alcoholic options like tea and soda, while the kitchen cooks up classics like fish & chips, Mac & cheese, and a rotating menus of deliciousness. The compassionate crew tops it off and deserve recognition for all their hard work!

Great local Berkeley bar serving beer and wine only. There's also spoken word on Wednesday nights. I ordered the fish and chips and fried chicken wings. I also enjoyed a glass of Cabernet and a singha beer draft. Yum.

Had an amazing time with my kids celebrating here on St Patty's Day! Great food and drink menu, authentic. Super organized staff! Great ambiance. Easy street parking.

I have been to The Starry Plough Pub during several Saint Patrick's Day Celebrations. This is an Irish bar with reasonable prices (for this day and age). I was able to find a dry cider--yum! What a celebration this 2023 Saint Paytrick Day was!!! It was standing room only. They had Irish bands, Irish dancers, and it was an open mike for singing Irish songs. They offer foods like Corned Beef and Cabbage, Fish and Chips, and Bacon Cheseburger, but we had dinner before going there. They looked good, though. The Starry Plough is a hangout for Irish and Irish wanna bes. They have live music, Irish music, and even Irish dancing.

Ask the Community - The Starry Plough

I'm an older adult that loves music and mingling with people but also like finding adults like myself to chat with. Is this a mostly young people atmosphere? Or is there a mixed age place?

What a great question for The Starry Plough! As an example I had the best St. Paddy's night ever at The Starry Plough this last St. Paddy's Day, and was raving to my friends (I am 68), that it was such a positive atmosphere with a wide range of…

There's an exterior in the front to sit outside and enjoy a beautiful late summer evening, and also an exterior in the back of the building to do the same. Or enjoy purchasing a tobacco pipe/tobacco/papers. No food here, but Solano is lined with eateries for pre/post pub action. They have a fireplace for the cold nights, and board games. A fun mix of locals working or hardly working :) This is a beer/wine spot also. Great mix of local sips, and some fun snacks too. Love the art and wall artifacts. A great addition to the area and meeting place for new and old friends alike. Easy on the wallet, metered-parking on Solano.

A must-visit place for anyone living in the area (4/5 Green Stars)…read moreBring cash! That's the first rule of Schmidt's Pub. Maybe it's the only rule! I've been coming here a bit more regularly, lately - more visits in the last year compared to the previous decade, in fact. Now I wonder what I was waiting for. According to the East Bay Express, Schmidt's Pub is "basically your living room, but better" - that does sum it up, except that very few of us have living rooms anything like this, with a cozy fireplace surrounded by comfy armchairs and rustic tables beside sunny windows. Not many of us have living rooms with Old Speckled Hen on tap, or populated with an entertaining parade of quirky folk and friendly dogs. If the people and dogs are not entertaining enough then pick up a copy of Calvin and Hobbes or A History of Clay Pipes (okay, I made that one up) and have a little retreat with a pint. 4/5 Green Stars for social and environmental impact, based on these factors: * Beer on tap (transported in reusable kegs) has a much lower footprint compared to bottles or cans. * Allows you to bring your own food, which is good for folk like vegans who are often more comfortable with BYO. * The snacks available at the counter could be a bit more Berkeley (or Albany)! They were mostly from big corps - Lays chips (PepsiCo) and chocolate bars from Mars. Would be nice to see a more imaginative/ethical selection. * A great community space with an inclusive atmosphere. Schmidt's is home to many groups (e.g., knitting) and provides a second family for many, some who send postcards from their trips! * Finally, we shouldn't underestimate the importance of having a place to slow down, reflect and connect with each other a little. In that respect, Schmidt's Pub is worth its weight in gold.

The bar was checking ID's at the entrance so a small line formed outside. Nothing excessive. This bar is a must visit for anyone going to Memorial stadium. It feels bigger than it is. Wooden booths and lots of tables. Patio seating looked nice. Ordering at the bar took a bit of time but most of it was people not knowing what they wanted or having to get their friend to prove the second beer they were ordering was for a 21 or older friend. Didn't get a chance to order food but from the pics posted it looks good. I could have stayed here all night. People watching was pretty fun. My buddy and I had a great time.

The steak with the cream pepper sauce was so enjoyable and with every bite I was saying to myself, how is this only $15. Good amount of meat, generous portion of fries, and asparagus. If I lived closer, I'd probably eat this everyday with no shame. We also got an order of their lemon pepper wings, and these were really good as well. Decent sized wings, dry rub, with a ton of flavor. Simple and flavorful. It was a Friday night, and when we arrived, it was busy and we grabbed a seat at the bar. After a few minutes, we realized that we had to get in line and order. They make all the drinks to order so that took some time to get through the line but once our order was placed, the food came out pretty quick. The menu is reasonably priced all around. The space is large inside and outside so definitely good for groups. Definitely will be back next month when we go to another show just for the steak frites and wings.

To start, they didn't have a single British beer on the menu. Guinness is Irish, not British, so that was already a letdown. On top of that, they were out of Scotch--pretty surprising for a pub. The service was friendly, and our server was very sweet and apologetic, but it was clear he had not been properly trained and didn't seem familiar with the menu. It took multiple trips to our table just to clarify that the clam chowder did not contain meatballs; the other soup of the day was meatball soup. Even then, the explanation we got was confusing. We also asked for our soup to come before the entrées, but everything arrived at the same time. As for the food, three of us ordered the fish and chips, and it was disappointing. The fries were cold and soggy, and the fish was soggy on the bottom where it sat on the fries. The fish itself seemed decent and tasted fine, but it was not prepared well. One person had the burger and had no complaints, and another had the shrimp scampi pasta, which looked good and seemed to be enjoyed. Overall, the experience just didn't live up to expectations.

We were seated in the main dining area that has a prix fixe menu but we were also able to order from their ala carte menu. Some people complain that the ambience is outdated and it feels old but we thought the interiors were charming and well maintained. We experienced the Michelin Star charm in service right from the beginning. Our server Justin was thoughtful throughout even though there was a slight glitch in service when he forgot our coffee and tea order. We waited for quite some time and had to remind him about it. He had clearly forgotten about it. The coffee and tea was delicious but we still saw the charge on our check despite his forgetfulness. We felt this wasn't the Michelin Star experience but it was a one off situation so it was water under the bridge. From the prix fixe menu, I chose half a dozen Saint Simon Oysters, their French omlette Forestiere and the chocolate souffle. My husband chose the oysters too and paired them with olive oil poached wild king salmon and farmstead cheeses instead of a dessert. From the ala carte menu, we chose the lobster roll and a dozen more oysters. The oysters were said to arrive all together but we recieved only the prix fixe menu oysters first. Our server fixed that by checking up on us and made sure the next dozen arrived sooner. The first batch of oysters barely had any meat. We were slightly disappointed so our server made sure the next batch that we paid full price from the ala carte menu from were doubled up. We appreciated the effort. Doubled up meat definitely added more flavor and gave us something to rave about. They were briny and delicious! The chef also sent out 2 tiny bites on the house to celebrate guests! They were beef carpaccio bites and my husband enjoyed those a lot! The lobster roll was beautifully buttery but it was missing slaw. I thought there wasn't enough tartness to balance out the creaminess. It was still very good though. The rest of the food was impeccable! The omlette was French and so delicious and delicate! The wild mushrooms tasted out of the world. The thin layer of cheese spread inside the delicate omlette was just buttery beauty! My husband's olive oil poached salmon was just melt in your mouth delicious! The cheeses were specialty and the souffle was best I've ever had! The food reminded us so much of our visit to France last year! We chose 2 mocktails and they were delicious too! The mignardises or the chocolate bon bons were the perfect end to this delicious meal! A special ice cream sandwich for my birthday on the house was much appreciated. I cannot wait to dine here in the future and explore other options from their menu!
