Punch Line staff are great! I was worried about entering with my bag of groceries (they have a no food policy); I was even ready to abandon it next to the doors and (hopefully) reclaim it later. Luckily, they were able to hold it in their kitchen during the performance. The venue is clean and easy to get to via public transit. My only complaints are the prices of the nonalcoholic drinks. I hate that all the major comedy clubs have a two-drink minimum. I'd rather just tack on $20 to the ticket price. That being said, Cobb's does have better options for non-drinkers like me. read more

I attended a comedy show here recently and had a just okay experience. The venue was fine for the most part. However, we were seated too close to the front wall that sometimes we just ended up seeing the comedian from behind. I'm sure we would've had a better experience if we didn't have a somewhat obstructed view. There's also a two drink minimum per person, including both alcoholic and non-alcoholic options. This rule was a bit strange to me because all the other comedy spots I've been to allowed me to select a food item to meet the two item minimum. However, Punch Line is very strict on the fact that your two items have to be beverages. The cocktail I got was unmemorable. I should've just gone with something premade and canned. Anywhere around this area is tough for parking so find yourself a garage or get a taxi. There's quite a bit of stairs and walking to get there. I'm sure there's an elevator but I'm not sure for folks with ADA or a harder time. At least it was good for my pregnant wife to get her steps in. All the Asian aunties be telling her she needs to WALK WALK WALK. Anyways - we have been here before but we came on Halloween and everything was all themed and hella sick! They were playing old school thriller music with also actually Thriller (MJ ). Staff was super friendly and helpful. We had a heckler which kind of sucked. Some of it was funny but there was a point where it just got annoying and he took it well once the message was received. It's a great spot if you love comedy. I only know of this and Cobb's in the city. I also recommend if you never really go comedy shows, go to the late showing for extra set time. Last time I saw Ali Wong before this Tuesday was at the Masonic a couple years ago. So when my friend gifted me his extra ticket to take me to her recent sold-out show at the Punch Line in SF, I wasn't expecting much. To my surprise, she came out with all new material.... well kinda... she actually did a Q&A with the audience for half the show. But that's rare and can only be done in an intimate venue like this, so it was just as fun regardless, and something to be appreciated, especially with such a variety of questions asked and the comical responses from the headliner. To the crowd's delight, the event actually ended up being an awesome 3-in-1 deal. Besides the star of the show, we were entertained by the comedic acts of Sheng Wang as her opener, and Bill Hader as a special guest (he and Ali Wong were charming and hilarious together on stage). And the venue was a great setting for all the laughter and excitement on this night. Decent view of the stage from almost anywhere, a full house but not claustrophobic, enough space to feel comfortable. Updated and modern feel, lovely artwork and decor on the walls, good sound system. Service was not the fastest, but I've experienced worse at other comedy clubs, so it was fine. The chicken nachos were not very good, neither the chips nor the toppings were appealing to me. At least my partner was able to eat some of it, though doing so in the dark was a challenge once the show began (no phone lights, as they had a strict "no phone" policy). I did like the mojito I got. Great flavor and not weak in alcohol content, just right. Street parking in the area was easy to find on a Tuesday evening too. Good times :) read more

It's got that cramped, low-ceiling basement feel, and not in a charming, speakeasy way. They **seat you with strangers**--yep, elbow-to-elbow with people you've never met, which might be your thing, but definitely wasn't mine. Intimate is one word for it. Uncomfortable is another. Came here for a comedy show to see Will Burkhart! I really enjoyed the show. The entrance is a bit out of the way but the signs they have up help guide the way. I arrived to the show 15min early because I didn't want to sit in the front to avoid being called on for audience participation (lol). Good thing I arrived early because they seat you starting from the back. They also check your ID and bags before you enter the venue. There is a 2 drink minimum for comedy shows so keep that in mind. They have cocktails and non-alcoholic drinks but they are normal SF prices so they are not cheap. They have table service and the service was very attentive. read more

The comedy acts were 10 out of 10 and hilarious. The comedy club is roomy and nice. It seemed secretly located and you had to go up some stairs and then turn a corner. What a fun venue to see a comedy show! Nothing better than eating their Mexican Street Corn Popcorn with lots of laughs. SO GOOD. Even when there's a full house, you really feel like the comedian is talking directly to you. They also do meet-and-greets with the headliner after the show! This is a Live Nation venue, so there's many big names that come here for stand up. Zac Galafanakis, Ali Wong, Dave Chappelle, Jason Leong - to name a few. I came here to see Sabrina Wu and loved every minute of it! With two openers, the show was about 2 hours long. Come early if you don't want to worry about ordering food and drinks during the show. Sure, some acts are hit or miss -- and some are pretty cringey -- but that's the beauty of giving comedians this platform. Food: 1-2 stars. Objectively it's pretty bad. Definitely eat before you come if you care about quality. We always plan a nice SF dinner beforehand! Drinks: 2 stars. Expensive for only standard or subpar drinks, but it's part of supporting this amazing club. Their large pours are a plus, and the two-drink minimum is something to plan for. If you're not a drinker, you can also grab the pricey canned water instead. Parking: Not bad, especially since it's FiDi at night and the area is typically empty. We usually find something. Environment and vibe: cozy venue, great view from most anywhere. Usually a solid audience vibe, which can vary based on who's performing. And per usual if you want to be part of the show (and roasted by the comedians), definitely go for the VIP seats. Lots of comedian-audience interaction here. Overall the is an iconic club with a fantastic atmosphere and a platform for both seasoned and rising comics. Come for the laughs, not the food. Came here recently with friends to see my favorite comedian, Andrea Jin, and we had an absolute blast! This was also my first time at an intimate comedy club, and it was really fun. I'd only been to big arenas for comedy shows in the past. As far as seating goes, we had a fairly large group, but they were able to seat us on the side on a slightly elevated platform, and we had a great view. There's a two drink minimum with admission, which really wasn't a problem with the 2ish hours we were there. I also ordered one of their flatbreads, which was tasty! As far as the show goes, the two openers were really great! And Andrea Jin was amazing! I'm going to see her live again for sure! And the Punch Line was awesome, overall. I had a very bad experience at Punch Line SF. They require a two-drink minimum, but they didn't let us inside even though we arrived early. Because of that, we had to buy drinks at the outside bar just to pass the time. Then once the show started, they still forced us to buy two more drinks inside Overall, the policies and the constant pressure to purchase drinks really ruined the night. The Worst 5 Minutes of "Service" I've Experienced. My friends and I came to Punch Line after our original comedy show at another venue was canceled. Security was super chill and welcoming, so I thought we were off to a good start. Unfortunately, that ended the moment we sat down at the bar. As soon as we took our seats, the bartender immediately pushed the menu on us. I let him know I've been sober, and while a couple of my friends ordered tequila shots, one other friend and I were fine with water. The older bartender (about 5'8", grey hair) then brought us Liquid Death--something I never asked for or wanted--and began harassing us about their two-drink minimum. He told me I couldn't have self-poured water, and his tone was already way off. Then a shorter blonde server (mid-20s, around 5'3") jumped in with a terrible attitude, aggressively enforcing the 2-drink minimum and telling us, "If you don't like it, you can leave." That alone shocked me. At that point I told my friends we should go. As we stood up, the older bartender kept going, lecturing us about how the two-drink minimum is "on the menus and on their website," dragging the conversation on and on. I cut him off politely: "Sir, you don't need to continue. We're heading out now, thank you." The blonde server then stormed over and demanded to know what I said, so I repeated it. Her response? "That's fine, then leave." As we walked out, I said, "Wow, thank you for the hospitality. Terrible." And she actually followed it up with: "FK YOU."** I honestly couldn't believe it. To think Punch Line was our backup plan from a much better venue--you'd expect at least decent service. Instead we were treated with disrespect within five minutes of walking in. If you enjoy rude attitudes, being talked down to, and getting harassed, then by all means, check out Punch Line. Otherwise, save yourself the headache. read more

2 drink minimum! The drinks are yummy and strong though, so I find it worth it. Plus, the comedy is better with a few drinks in me. We were there for SF Sketchfest, and I appreciate that they seat you because for the other sketchfest event we went to they didn't and it wasn't a fun experience because of it. Punchline is a classic SF spot for comedy, and you can kind of feel that when you walk in. It can get a little musty and humid in there, and I wish they gave it a deep clean once in a while. Overall, though, I'd gladly return as long as the talent is worth it! read more

First of all you wait outside in que before being subjected to metal detectors and being searched by staff. Once you get inside pick a table but the "reserved" booths with the "reserved signs" aren't really reserved they just stay empty to piss everyone off. The headliner Taylor Williamson just wasn't a funny "headliner" at all, the comedian before him was absolutely hilarious but Punchline won't even publish the young man's name on their lineup. The food maybe "C-" I'm pretty certain it was previously frozen. The beer was ice cold which was great but served in a plastic glass WTF! Disappointing date night, won't return. read more

Came here for a free comedy event on a random Tuesday. Had a nice spot in the third row! 2 performers plus the headliner. It was perfect. 2 drinks minimum. Most are doubles but they count as single drinks. You can buy non-alcoholic drinks too. Came here with a few friends. Had a great time. Laura Peeks headlined and she asked the audience a question, does anyone smoke? She pointed at the birthday boy and he said "Hail No!" Biggest Laugh of the Night! One of the other fellows in our group treated us all tickets to this show because #laurapeeks is one of his favorite comedians. Did any of you notice all of us stand up at once and leave? Yep! They kicked us O-U-T out... foreal.... I was shocked! They said the guys were talking too much! But the comedian specifically asked him a question! I've never been kicked out of anywhere. I was super excited to finally go to this venue the location is cool. However they packed us like sardines at a table that is meant for 2 they had 4 and it was very uncomfortable. The service was poor. Our waitress told us she forgot about us 2 times. We did a flatbread pizza which was surprisingly good. The espresso martini however should be taken off the menu it was not good and they served it in a plastic cup for 19$. I would like to try this experience again but I wasn't impressed. I love coming to Pumchline, it's cozy and always fun. But now it shows signs of wear and is in need of maintenance. The backdrop of the stage, the iconic San Francisco skyline is peeling off around the edges and needs repairs. The management of the club really needs to maintain the facility better. Bathroom needs more stalls, the lines in the bathrooms, both men's and women's are unnecessarily long. read more

The experience was fun, and this was my first comedy show! I found the service to be excellent... however, I was surprised about the two drink minimum. As a student on a budget, I bought tickets at the box office and didn't expect to incur more purchases. The Shirley temple was yummy though and I don't regret my drink choices! The waitstaff were super nice and were super friendly. The comedians were sooo funny. Each woman had an amazing set! It is a smaller club but I am absolutely adored that. After whatever you pay for a ticked, most of the drinks for a 2 drink minimum are about $18 - so be prepared to pay more that $85 (including tip) here. I have mixed feelings about this place because on one hand I loved the comedian I saw, the place was pretty, I felt like the service was great/not disruptive, and getting in and out wasn't bad, but I can't ignore the prices of everything there. I wish they included part of that into ticket prices because you have to buy at least two drinks, but even the cheapest drink was the price of a four pack of them at a store. And they don't show the prices of their items on their website, so you either have to really look into it or realize what you are getting into when you are already there. First time at the Punch Line for my hubby & I last night. We went to see Dave Chappelle, a last min pop up show with 2 showings for the night. We went to the earlier show at 7PM. Arrived early and lined up. Shortly after a lady came to check our ID's and vaccination card. We received a star stamp on our hand which means we have been checked! We were let in around 640 PM with full body checks. Cellphones and watches were locked up. Punch Line rules are 2 drinks per person MINIMUM. I did not like that as it feels forced. We both don't drink alcohol but they did have soft drinks, juices, lemonades and they can make any alcoholic drinks with NO alcohol so FYI. We also got 2 waters by Liquid Death (canned waters from the Alps). We ordered nachos to share and it was HUGE. The chips were topped with beans, sour cream, salsa and guacamole. I'm glad we went early. We sat front row and was SO CLOSE to Dave Chappelle. His show was so awesome! Lots of laughter. My husband even got to shake hands with him as he was heading off stage. Dream come true for him! LOL We wore masks the whole time. They don't enforce it even though they verbally told us to keep our masks on when we were not eating or drinking. Mostly everyone had their masks off for the whole show. I really enjoyed the service from the wait staff. They were attentive, friendly, worked hard and went around and took everyone's orders. I also enjoyed that the Punch Line is a small and intimate venue. It's old and you can see the age. They have restrooms but those were old too. The only confusion of the night was the parking package I purchased with the tickets. It was $10 for parking at California Parking garage at 555 Jackson St. Not sure why the package did not come with the parking garage right underneath the PunchLine (Washinton & Battery). It was an 8 min walk and the directions were NOT clear on the parking pass I purchased. That is one thing I would change is the parking. Otherwise, it was a fun and memorable night. read more

This is about customer service. I stopped by the Punch Line last night to inquire about a forthcoming show. They were getting ready for a show that evening when I asked about future tickets. Adam, a staff member, took the time and effort to guide me on the best way to attempt to buy a ticket to the show I wanted, which is sold out. Why am I writing this? Because in an era where customer service is lacking, here is a guy went went out of his way to provide guidance for an event where he was not making any additional compensation and the venue would not make a dime (potentially) until that day. Customer service in SF, on a 1- 10, ranks about a 4. Adam showed to me that "he gets it". As someone in the service sector (resume writing), I get it and appreciate service!
