I travel to SF for work regularly, and I often stay at the Grand Hyatt just a block away. I was here for the long weekend and have been in a bit of a valley in terms of happiness in my life recently. I decided to head over for the Sunday night "cheaper Than Therapy" show on my own to try to pick myself up. I grabbed a liter of beer () from the bar and then we all crammed into the main stage, which was very intimate and cozy. I laughed and laughed and laughed, and I can genuinely say that I feel much better about things after going there tonight. The staff and host were all great. This is the first stand-up comedy show I've been to that was actually funny! There was a series of 6 comedians, hit & miss, some funnier than others (or maybe idk, I just don't have a sense of humor lol!) The drinks are surprisingly good (I got a mezcal one), and the space is tiny & intimate & scrappy and behind a kabob shop. Wow, yelpers are right--this was a great experience. Drinks before-well made and not overpriced. Nice small venue so not a bad seat in the house. 1.5 hour show with 4 or 5 acts is perfect. My husband and I I saw a Friday night late show. Each of the 6 comedians were very funny. There are 2 reasons for the 4/5 review: The comedians , although creative and intelligent, all made multiple ageist jokes. My husband and I are cool, fun people in our 60's ... guess it's easier to punch down. Anyway, I still recommend the show. The second reason is that my drink, a manhattan, was terrible. It tasted so watered down that I would have brought it back to the bar if it wasn't so crowded. read more

Excellent fun for a night out in SF! This place is a hidden gem. There is no drink requirement and that says a lot for me because they don't need you to be tipsy to make you laugh. It's pure talent. They have two bars (one upstairs and one downstairs). The venue is cozy and has an old school feel which I really appreciate and like. Even though seats are first come first serve, the staff will manage the line so that everything is orderly and no chaos. Overall, I really love this place and appreciate the fact that I can see and be of close proximity to the comedians. They all have worked hard to make their jokes funny and it's nice to see who they are as a person as oppose to seeing a face on a big screen in the back at a large venue. I'm a regular comedy fan and usually enjoy a good roast, but my experience here crossed a serious line. One of the comedians appeared to be visibly impaired during the show e.g almost falling off his chair, stumbling and behaving erratically. What started as typical crowd work quickly became xenophobic and mean spirited. He spent an extended amount of time targeting me and my friend from the audience. He made comments about my friend being Italian, calling her "white but not nice white. like war white, Eastern European war white." He then turned to me, and after learning I'm from El Salvador, made multiple offensive comments including saying I "must have a knife" in my bag, that someone should call 911, and that he'd "rather go to prison" in El Salvador. He then asked where I live and went ahead and judged just by my zip code that I must be doing tax evasion. Too surprised that someone from my background would be living there. Given the current times we live in I was expecting some sort of acknowledgment from him that he had crossed lines. These weren't edgy jokes anymore, they were harmful stereotypes based on our ethnicities. There's a difference between playful comedy and discriminatory attacks, and this was clearly the latter. The comedian's apparent intoxication made the situation even more uncomfortable and unsafe. I love comedy and can take a joke, but this experience was deeply disappointing and hurtful. I hope the venue takes performer conduct more seriously going forward. Sad to say I won't be returning. I was a regular spectator and recommended this place to my friends a lot but I was very disappointed this time around. On this show we only liked one comedian and she was great. read more

This was my first comedy club in San Francisco and it was so fun! My company had rented out the entire place, threw a pizza party, and had an open bar with unlimited wine and beer. All the staff are fantastic - super funny and nice. The venue was all decked out in fun decor and had a few nice touches for our teams attending, and we all had a blast! The food was fantastic, the comedians were hilarious (and kept targeting each one of us in the audience since they were also in tech or were formerly in tech), and the drinks were great too. There isn't a ton of seating in the lounge area, so be prepared to stand. Every comedian was so funny, and definitely tailored their bits to every show that they do here. Don't expect a giant venue - this is giving speakeasy comedy club but it's such a fun spot to have come across! read more

First time and I'll be back! Funny comics, great time, lounge type atmosphere. Everyone was hilarious. The last guy though left us almost in tears. The comics all "picked" on my bf but they were nice about it not humiliating at all. Thanks. Also loved that the drinks were not forced on the patrons trying to watch the comedy show. They also allowed people to leave in the middle of the show to use the bathroom and get more drinks. I've been to many comedy shows around the country and all the above is very appreciated. Attended the New Year's Eve comedy event with champagne toast at midnight and live jazz afterparty (which was actually just random tunes performed on the piano, fun to sing along to, with a fun and carefree vibe) along with late night food being served to guests, included with the ticket price... all of this taking place in the downstairs lounge area of the Shelton Theater. The main stage entrance for Cheaper Than Therapy is toward the right of the bar. And the comedians for the night were hilarious and entertaining, many of which were creators of the show, as well as one of my faves, Emily Van Dyke. They had me cracking up all night, and feeling good as the clock struck midnight, a perfect way to ring in the new year. I'm not too fond of how doors to the show and auditorium open so late, but we did enjoy sitting in front row seats with plenty of legroom, and using the ledge on the stage for our cocktails (otherwise there are no drink holders with the seating here). My go-to drink at the Shelton Theater is When Life Gives You Lemons, but my bf got the Pirate Drink and enjoyed that too. We also checked out the current art exhibit at the Shelton Theater, featuring the work of Cedric Wentworth (The Roaring 17's), which was quite interesting. The staff here always makes us feel welcome as well. Both CTT and Secret Improv Society are awesome! read more

A great spot to see comedy for a several reasons! 1. Great location. My hotel was about .7 miles away from the venue so we decided to walk. My husband and I felt completely safe walking in the area of this venue (this is important info to know because many people worry about being safe in SF. At least I was concerned being that I haven't been back to the city since pre-COVID.) 2. The tickets prices are very affordable. And you're supporting a small business. 3. My favorite, No drink minimum!! I don't drink alcohol and I only drink water in the evening, so when I'm forced to spend $14-$18 on water, drives me insane and I'll usually avoid those club when possible. A couple girlfriends and I decided to check out Cheaper than Therapy during our girls trip to San Francisco. It was the perfect activity for our first evening in town! Tickets were totally affordable and the location was ideal as it was right around the corner from our hotel. We were able to walk right over and felt completely safe. Entering the building, there's a unique hallway and ticket booth, and once you walk inside you hit a really cool and aesthetic lounge with seating and a bar. The bartender had the best energy and she was super friendly! All great first impressions! Down the steep steps you arrive at another lounge prior to entering the auditorium. The lounge had another bar, all sorts of intriguing art, and they were bumping some old school hip hop jams - yesss, all the fun vibes. The bartender was fun and engaging, and by then, we knew we had hit the jackpot ending up here! In fact, all the staff were so welcoming and enthusiast throughout our experience. Some of them also ended up being a part of the comedy production and even performed on stage. You can tell they're a close knit community but they were also so welcoming. I can't imagine how much work it must take to put on a weekly show like this! Some staff had multiple roles so kudos to pulling it all off! We had a great time, laughed, and were able to chill in the downstairs bar/lounge afterwards as we decided what to do next on our first night in SF. My buddy and I went to the Cheaper than Therapy show last Sat 4/04 (after having been to a great show of theirs maybe 3 months prior) and it was a disappointing experience to say the least AND not due to bad comedy (there were alot of good bits). Like many shows, I assume, there was one singular drunk lady/person who decided she was drunk enough to be entitled to adding constant commentary from the front/second row. It was do disruptive and the comedians were clearly cutting their time short because of her. And while clearly this drunk woman is at fault, I felt like either the Theater or the comedy show need to know how to properly handle the situation. It would be simple, have a staff member give her a singular warning and after that you interrupt the show for 2 mins and escort her (along with her embarrassed husband) out of the theater... much to the applause of all the other paying patrons. I feel bad, because it's not the comedians place to necessarily individually figure out how to manage each situation ... but at the same time, something has to be done. I understand it's a smaller/local enterprise but they need to come up with some kind of policy and a method to enforce it. read more

I had such a fun night here. Highly recommend this to locals who haven't caught the show yet or out of town visitors trying to fill the night with debauchery. Show consists of a rotating panel of comedians; you're bound to find one that clicks with you. I love the small intimate space. There's no bad seat in the house and the price is a total steal. Wow what a great show! It's seriously cheaper than therapy :-) At $25 a ticket for an hour of laughter honestly couldn't ask for more. For the Thursday early show I got there around 7:15 PM, doors open 8 PM. Unless you want to get first row you could probably show up just like 10 mins before. We came in for the 10pm show, seeing as it was just around the corner from the hotel. This made it a no-brainer activity, especially because the $25 price tag is a big draw. We got there right before the start, and it was a quick entry and seating. The space is small, so there aren't any bad seats. Even still, we were in the second row. I didn't want to sit in the front, because I felt like that was going to be easy exposure to be picked on. There was a big group of 19 year olds in front, and they were mentioned in every set, so I made the right choice. Lol. Even though I enjoyed the evening, I didn't find myself laughing what I would consider an adequate amount. Some of the comedians fell short for me, though there was one that had me cracking up for quick a bit. He was my favorite (I think he was third out?). Regardless, it was a fun night out and I have no regrets.
