We attended a comedy show on a Wednesday night at 7:30pm. It was fun. They have seating for about 15 people. There were about six comedians and they were all funny. Many of them were new comics, just starting out. The show was about an hour and a half. Cover was free through Eventbrite, but donations are requested and there is a two drink minimum. We found the bartender and the door attendant to be really nice. It's a very welcoming environment. This is a good activity if you are up in the city and want to relax and enjoy some comedy at low cost. Beware that due to the size of the seating area, all seats are like being in the front row of a comedy show. read more

Went to The Function on a whim and it ended up being one of the better comedy nights I've had in SF. Room's small in the best way. You're close enough that the laughs feel contagious, not forced. Comics were actually funny -- not just "I get what you're doing" funny, but real laughs. No dead air, no awkward dragging sets. Crowd was into it, drinks were solid, vibe felt easy. Not try-hard, not touristy. Just a good place to sit down, have a drink, and laugh for a couple hours. Would 100% go back. Easy recommendation. read more

The Function Comedy Club was hella fun. Easy to find, huge bar area, romantic atmosphere, dark and moody, bartender guy is handsome and bartender girl has the cutest look. Sarah, who I thought was the manager, gave the best recommendations on drinks for me and my group of friends. Not only was she fast and friendly, our drinks lead us exactly where we needed to be on a Thursday night! However, I don't know where to begin.. I had brought my friends to support one of the organizers responsible for this amazing event; yet, the host or manager or owner or whoever he is, made VERY UNCOMFORTABLE AND INAPPROPRIATE COMMENTS AGAINST ME TO MY FEMALE FRIEND. who I had left for a short bit to document the best drinks to recommend my viewers online. After ridiculing me in front of my friends and embarrassing my female buddy ;Telling her to take an Uber home alone because I am doing my job asking and talking to the bartender about the best drinks in house. To which I spent OVER $150 that night. (Recording the interaction over voice recording to write a better review). The audacity for this person to ostracized me and stain my image for the validation of my female friend while I'm trying to help their business is pathetic. I only came there to show the world what the vibe, drinks, and comedy is about. Unfortunately, I nor my friends will not be coming back here. It sucks because my friends who were excited to bring more people here felt embarrassed at this persons comments. Specially my friend who is also my client since she's a a performer herself; she stated that she will not invite her viewers to comeback to this place ever! As an Afro-Indigenous man who wanted to support a fellow black business owner, am ashamed at how disrespectful the host was. Even after buying the organizer a drink. And spending well over what a usual weekday night costs. I am utterly disappointed and disgusted. UPDATE: The man was the owner of The (Diss) Function. Came here for the weekly comedy show they have here, one at 7pm and the second at 9pm. Small comedy club venue that cross functions as a cocktail lounge too. Think dark vibes with artistic murals with a sense of an old style, modern interior decorative elements. Once seated, it has a cozy atmosphere to it; very intimate seating. Arrived on time to score seats upstairs to watch from a top view - that was cool! And then my friend and I got lucky to be asked if we wanted to sit in the VIP front area with comfy seats - I guess those guests did not arrive so we got lucky to have that opportunity up front! I ordered the espresso martini. It was good, but not the best I've had, but other than that the service was very friendly and attentive. Comedians were great, had some good laughs! My friend started having a good time cracking jokes back with the comedians too. This is a good way for new comedians to expose themselves out there! 3.75 stars. We came on a super busy night with a full house! The Function is upscale, clean, and quite vibey. My group and I came late but they started the show 15-minutes after so we had just enough time to find seats in the back and order drinks. The drinks and bar service was great. I ordered their take on a Old Fashioned and thought it was even better than the classic cocktail. :) Unfortunately we didn't find most of the comedians to be tasteful and because the Function is primarily a comedy club, that accounts for my low rating. The establishment itself I give a full 5 stars to! The comedians were pretty hit or miss-- out of the 6 that performed, I found 2 very funny and the remaining 4 to be too reliant on (borderline) racist and overly sexual jokes. On our way out, we ran into a couple of the comedians yelling at each other about what jokes they had made on stage. I would probably come back one more time to see if the other comedians are more funny and professional, but the first impression was interesting to say the least. :0 read more

I have been to The Function a few times and the comedy has been consistently stellar. I basically never give five star reviews because no matter how good, no place is perfect; however, besides the comedy being top-notch, the venue and the location -- on its way up! -- and the staff and the drinks and the overall vibe are quite cool. I have been here twice now, and it is such a beautiful cocktail bar with all of the vibes for the holidays. they have really creative cocktail menus with hilarious names. The bartender with the blond and pink hair was a rockstar and super friendly. by 7:00 PM, they have their comedy shows. The only thing that was off putting was how aggressive they try to get you to leave if you are not there for the show. I was told they used to kick everyone out in order to charge a cover fee to re-enter. Other than the off putting vibes, it's a cute bar. I really wanted to like this place because it's black owned and they cater to a variety of POC! I tried my best to laugh at the jokes to be supportive but a lot of the comedy just didn't land for me and my group. I hope they make an effort to improve. Went to the Desi comedy night and was utterly disappointed. Only 1 of the comedians was actually Indian. None of his jokes related to our identity so it didn't matter that he was Desi in this context. The other comedians were Chinese, Mexican and black. They made some Indian jokes but in general all the jokes were based off of stereotypes and so weren't particularly unique or witty. I've been to comedy shows where white comedians have made genuinely observant and funny jokes about Indians, so race is not a factor here. Most of them relied on sexual jokes, which felt lazy and cheap. For example, one Chinese woman wasn't getting many laughs so she tried to do crowd work. She picked on the one black guy in the audience and literally said "ok, so you're black, uhhhh" and made a joke about him probably having a large penis. The subsequent jokes were of the same vein. She also talked about how her vagina is very international because of all the different types of men she's let in it. :/ One guy got up there and started walking around the stage and said "i'm exploring the stage". He kept walking up to the edge where the audience was sitting and thrusting his pelvis out. He wasn't making any jokes while doing this, his movements were supposed to be the joke. It lasted like 5 minutes. It felt like he just didn't have any jokes prepared and was trying to fill the time. Multiple comedians kept using catalytic converter theft and R Kelly as punchlines. It got old real fast. It felt like the owner last minute asked some friends to tell some jokes to fill the time slots or that it was open mic night. It felt very amateur and unrehearsed. At the end of the show, someone came around with an ipad with a qr code to get audience members to make a "suggested" $20 donation. It didn't feel like you could say no because he sat there waiting for you to scan it. The server also kept coming up to audience members in the middle of the show to pressure people to order another drink to meet the mandatory 2 drinks. The comedy show fee, 2 drinks and "suggested" tip all made this a pretty expensive night out. I primarily came for the comedy but the venue was nice (a bit narrow) and the drinks were good. If they can't get good talent in the door, this place is still an excellent stand alone bar! read more

This is a new comedy club to the scene that will officially open in the coming weeks that showcase local comedians. It is also self-proclaimed to be the first black owned comedy club in SF by Stroy Moyd who has opened for Dave Chappelle before and he is hilarious! Drinks are good and the ambiance is a cozy hotel lounge living room vibe. We ordered the Negroni and shot/beer/scratcher special and both were good! Service was also fast. Order at the bar on the stand up nights with a two drink minimum and come support local comedians from the Bay! The vibe is great and I will definitely be back. read more

This review would be a few more stars if the owner didn't spend the vast majority of his time on stage calling women "b*tches" and belittling white women specifically. Then when he was off-stage, he was talking loudly to other comics next to where I was sitting, so I had a harder time hearing the show. Let me back up: I generally love standup comedy, and go to a lot of local shows. At The Function, I came to the Christmas Eve early show. I was five minutes late, not realizing they would start exactly on time. Admission was $15/each. I was informed that the "space reserved" for wheelchairs was a little space next to the front door, as far from the stage as possible. Okay, fine, I wasn't going to argue, especially since I was five minutes late. The club space itself is a shotgun-style bar. It's beautifully decorated, feels very contemporary and upscale, definitely gentrified for the neighborhood. The cocktails were average-upscale in price and well-made. I enjoyed my Lemon Drop. They also had a menu of intricate-sounding holiday-themed cocktails, which were probably delicious, but I'm a simple girl who likes the classics, and I was very happy with my drink...Definitely keep that bartender! The mostly-male line-up offered both racial and age diversity. Most the comedians relied on the usual misogyny, homophobia, and reductive jokes about white people. There were two standouts: A guy with a goatee who was a born-and-bred San Franciscan and had some great one-liners, and a 50-year-old woman named Pam, who called out a particularly chauvinistic comedian for his misogyny and kept everyone in the club in stitches! I would've been happy if the show had just been those two comics! I also want to give a shout out to "Dirty Mike", the emcee, who did a great job of keeping the energy alive in the room between the other performers. Near the end of the show, they announced that they were sending a tip bucket around, suggesting a "tip" (is it a tip if you shame everyone into paying it?) of $10-20 per person, or "$3,000 if you're white". We tossed in a $20 "tip" for the two of us, which meant that between that and the door fee, this show was actually $25/each, which it was definitely NOT worth. This space really is NOT 100% WHEELCHAIR-ACCESSIBLE, with the exception of the very front entrance. Once inside, if all the bar seats are taken, it's virtually impossible to maneuver a wheelchair of any ADA-compliant width through the space. I wasn't able to get through the bar at all, so cannot comment on the bathroom. There is also a balcony that is 100% NOT WHEELCHAIR-ACCESSIBLE. So, if you use a wheelchair, be prepared to sit in a tiny alcove by the front door, as far from the stage as possible. There is no ADA-compliant section of the bar, but the goatee-having comic apparently also works there and came around to check if we'd been able to order drinks. I would say that I'd come back here for a cocktail at a time when there wasn't a show, because the bartender was great and the cocktail was delicious, but honestly, there are tons of more-wheelchair-accessible bars out there, and the owner put out a bad vibe. Why would I want to give business to a man who misogynistically belittles women who share my skin color? I also definitely wouldn't go back for comedy again, because the show was over-priced for the caliber of the performers (with the exception of the two I mentioned above!). Comedy is so subjective, though, so if misogyny, homophobia, and jokes about "white b*tches" are funny to you, you might enjoy this place. read more

Soft openings can be hit or miss and this was definitely a hit! Right off the bat, the feelings is warm and welcoming from the cold street of Market. Lush teals and soft golds envelope you as you walk into the bar. I had the chuckle fuc*er which is a gin based drink. And it was spicy! Not only was there a tajin rim glass there was also a perfectly sliced jalapeño with seeds added. The owner did mention that there will be charcuterie boards and spiced nuts available eventually. For a soft opening, it felt like this place has been part of the SF bar scene for ages. Great workers, optimal location, and delicious drinks.
