    Chicken gallo pinto
    Petty T.

I've been curious about this place for quite a while and finally decided to give it a try this past weekend. I was welcomed with many smiles from the staff upon walking in and was quickly seated. The menu has a good variety of Costa Rican food and it all sounded great. My friend and I finally decided on the chicken Casado and the Gallo Pinto. We also tried the empanada mix to see how Costa Rican empanadas compared to the ones we were used to eating. All of the food was delicious. If I had to give a minor complaint, it would be that the chicken could have used some more seasoning but that was quickly remedied by this really tasty sauce they keep on the tables. Also wish they served alcohol bc than that would've made it even that much better but oh well. Overall, great experience, good service and pretty good food.

Also, try the Gallo pinto with steak especial, Costa Rican sausages. It is amazing, I will make sure to get that next time. Plus, their flan is very unique from the Mexican or Filipino flan I am used to.

CHIFRIJO "amazing" a lil fresh taste of Costa Rica

Amazing!!!! The food is delicious and fresh! Small Gem in the neighborhood!! I had the CHIFRIJO, (just close your eyes when you take the first bite!! ) OMG!! It was as I can feel myself in a tropical island !! Or COSTA RICA it was delicious Then I had the Maduro con Queso y Natilla! I love sweet plantains and cream We are definitely going again

Chifrijo - similar concept as Chipotle's burrito bowl... but 100 times better!

Was in the mood for some Latino food and a quick search on Yelp turned up this location. So glad I stopped in! Clean, cozy location with extremely friendly workers. Thankfully they spoke English since my Spanish really sucks. Based on another reviewer's yelp picture, I ordered the Chifrijo. This dish is the same concept as a chipotle burrito bowl... But 100 times better! I have an appetite like a bear who just woke up from hibernation - and I simply could not finish this bowl of food. Although it appears small in the picture, it is a sizable meal for a gordo hombre like me. This establishment works hard, serves fresh quality food and deserves to win your hard-earned dollars. Take a chance and try it out. Next time I'll be back with the whole family.

They give bottled water and a cup

Authentic yummy tasting food. There usually isn't a super big crowd and the staff are friendly. The food is good. They give bottled water instead of from the tap, which I like. The mix empanada appetizer is good for you to try all the variations and not over eat. My chorizo was a little dry but the fried cheese on the rice made up for it! Delicious!

Beautiful and relaxing Costa Rican oasis. The chifrijo was perfect and my Costa Rican family was thrilled with everything they ate. If your looking for authentic Costa Rican food, go no further. This is the place.

One of my favorite touches is that they re-chill my martini glass halfway through my drink--it's those little details that make the experience feel special. The complimentary popover bread is absolutely to die for and worth the visit all by itself. We also loved the crispy Wagyu dumplings--they were packed with flavor and perfectly cooked. The burger was cooked exactly as ordered, and the Brussels sprouts were outstanding. The only disappointment was my filet mignon, which was unfortunately overcooked. It was the only miss of the evening, but everything else was so enjoyable that it didn't overshadow the overall experience. Great food, excellent service, and a fantastic atmosphere. We'll definitely be returning.

We were there on a Friday evening to celebrate a family birthday, and the place was packed! Thankfully, beyond the bar and lounge area in the front, there were several dining areas, which had not been initially visible and could accommodate all of the hungry diners waiting for tables. We were escorted to the bustling, rustic back room and presented with menus and their signature popovers. The large, flakey pastries had been sprinkled with cheese on the top for an added zest. They were as delicious as always. I also started with a Spicy Cherry Margarita, which packed a lot of heat, but the selected fruit flavor did not really mesh well with the spicy or smokey notes the drink exhibited. It was not my favorite marg, but it was not entirely awful. We next moved on to a few starters to share. First, there was the Yellowfin Tuna Tartare, which I had previously adored at the Summit location, but found very bland on that evening. The mashed avocado, crispy wontons, and sesame seeds were all there, but the wasabi cream and ponzu sauce were barely perceptible. The Kobe Sliders were served as a trio and topped with cheddar cheese and caramelized onions. The patties were generous in size for "sliders", and they were served on sweet buns. I found these enjoyable and would get them again, though they would not be a mandatory order. Lastly, there were the Maine Lobster Bites in a lemon garlic beurre blanc with gruyere and bread crumbs. It was certainly a decadent dish and reminded me of a lobster mac and cheese without the noodles. It was richer than I typically enjoy, and the shellfish was on the chewier side, so I was not a huge fan. In terms of the entrees, there was mixed feedback around the table. First there was the lobster tail that was yet again too tough to consume. The scallops received a similar review, though I tried a scoop of the accompanying mushroom risotto, which was actually delicious. Then, there were the steaks that were all incorrectly prepared. For instance, my 8-ounce Petit Filet Mignon had been requested "medium", but arrived medium-well. No one ordered anything below medium, but most of the delivered pieces of meat were served far less cooked than that. Despite my steak being overdone, it was still enjoyable and had the nice crust for which one would hope. In addition, my side of Roasted Wild Mushrooms included an aromatic blend of shiitake, oyster, and white button varieties, all tossed in a hearty herb oil. They were fantastic! In regards to the steaks, we had let the staff know that we had been disappointed, and they graciously presented a few desserts as an apology. The Flourless Chocolate Cake was rich and gooey; it was topped with a caramel sauce and served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. The Roots Super Sundae was a massive martini glass stuffed with chocolate and vanilla ice cream, waffle cone pieces, and fresh berries. I only tried the chocolate ice cream and found it delicious. The sundae was served with a slew of toppings like Reese's Cup pieces, M&Ms, Oreo crumbles, sprinkles, and more. It was a fun and decadent treat. However, the Roots Warm Butter Cake was the standout winner for most of us. The fluffy pound-like cake was topped with a blueberry compote, fresh whipped cream, and vanilla ice cream; it was simple, comforting, and just delightful. Overall, we appreciated the service at the Roots Ridgewood location, but found the food and overall experience disappointing, especially after we had adored their other locations.

We ask if they have outdoor seating and they tell us they do, then they proceed to seat us in an area with windows and ceiling! And right next to a large and very loud Bridal shower (that would have been nice to know, we would have asked to be seated as far away as humanly possible.) Then we sit for 30 solid minutes without a peep from ANYONE. Then suddenly a confused looking young lady steps up and informs us "no one told her we were here." Guess that's OUR problem? Placed a drink order and another 20 minutes passes when I am informed it is no longer on tap. Drinks finally arrive, the "Craftsman IPA" is flat and "off" tasting. White wine was warm as if it was sitting in the sun. Food was not much better sadly. The Calamari was flavorless and tough - apparently someone forgot the Asian drizzle that was supposed to go on it. It was also that "fake" calamari where every piece is exactly the same size and shape. The "stuffed" meatballs were stuffed - with air! Literally nothing but a hole in the middle. The artichoke and crab dip had a strong fishy taste, it was so bad I feared it was tainted. To their credit they took it off the bill, eventually. And from the moment our drinks arrived earlier,, our server never once checked back on us for another drink, do we need anything, how is everything etc. Hey Craftsman - do better! Maybe some training in the kitchen and out on the floor is in order.

The pernil was honestly some of the best I've ever had, and I've eaten a lot of pernil because it's one of my favorite foods. It was incredibly tender and seasoned to perfection. Even the skin was delicious and packed with flavor. I'm usually not a fan of vegetables mixed into rice since a lot of restaurants use frozen veggies, and I prefer fresh ones. But the rice was so good that I could have eaten it by itself. It was a thicker long-grain rice, not sticky at all, and it paired perfectly with the pernil. The empanadas were amazing too.
