There is no center. That is the issue Tualatin has been struggling with for years. While most of the surrounding cities have a 'historic' or dense collection of shops and restaurants in the city center, Tualatin is more spread out. But over the past decade, they have continued to develop the Tualatin Commons. On the former site of a dog food factory, they constructed Commons Lake and surrounded it with a mix of businesses, a hotel, restaurants, and a few condominiums. The idea was a good one, but it doesn't quite have the same appeal. It still feels like a business park unless an event is taking place. The city even proposed building a clock tower or some other structure to act as a focal point. Having been a Tualatin resident for over a decade, I've been to this park hundreds of times. Heck, I don't live there anymore and I was still at the Commons three times this week. There are rules that are (mostly) enforced: 1) No swimming, wading, fishing or ice skating on the lake 2) No dogs 3) No alcoholic beverages 4) No inline skating or bicycles It is as if they don't want you to have any fun at all. The Commons is the venue for many of Tualatin's community activities: Concerts on the Commons (Friday), Farmer's Market (Friday) and Movies in the Commons (Saturday) during the summer. They also host part of the Tualatin Crawfish Festival here, where almost all of the rules above are broken. I do suggest you heed the warning about the lake. Filled with goose poop and algae, you really don't want your kids splashing around. It is prettier from a distance. There is also a large water structure that is similar to Salmon Street Fountain in Portland, but on a smaller scale. Tualatin is filled with trees, but the Commons is rather stark and I prefer to hang out with the family at the other city parks. But it is central and I do enjoy some of the restaurants in the area, so I suppose it serves its purpose.

Walking around the lake is a great way to load up on pokemon! Also the fountain is fun for the kids to play in.

There's ample space in Apple parking and if you want to take a break from the playground and there's plenty of trails that walk around the river you can make some loops and more. There's also plenty of covered areas for birthday parties barbecues, or just get together which you can reserve at the beginning of the year they fill up fast.

Many can walk around, bring their own boats/kayaks/SUP to launch off the ramp, fish on the river, or have a picnic. It's beautiful here, but it's also very popular over the summer months when folks want to use this place to launch off the ramp. Parking is hard to find. At this spot, you can rent through the Tualatin Riverkeepers. They provided life vests and the kayak of our choice. It was great paddling out on the water with my kid. We stayed pretty close by, so the water was really calm and beginner friendly. We didn't venture past the freeway underpass, we went to the right side from the boat launch. Some parts are so shallow you hit some rocks. This park also offers soccer fields and an updated inclusive family playground. Highly recommend coming here.

The beach area is covered with lots of trees from large trees, there is plenty of room to picnic (grills available), a snack bar, restrooms, playground and lake access. This beach is closed to everyone except those that live within the boundaries of a Lake Grove School District. Fortunately I have friends who live on the canal and I'm invited out often for boat rides and to anchor and swim in the swimming hole by this beach. Water is surprisingly warmer than I ever predict, but still a cool and refreshing 77 which feels awesome on a hot summer day. This summer, 2020, we enjoyed many pop-up concerts where the band performed on a barge. Missing all the concert and movies in the park, this was a welcomed way to enjoy summer while being socially distanced. My favorite day is July 4th when the town of Lake O lights fireworks over the lake. This is open to anyone, but obviously it's super crowded so if you plan on watching from the beach, get there super early! We watch from the boat, anchoring and tying up with other boats, and then enjoy the magnificent display of fireworks and their reflection on the water while sipping wine, enjoying snacks and great conversation. It's one of my favorite nights of the year! Sadly, the fireworks were cancelled in 2020, along with most everything, but I still spent several heavenly days and evenings on the lake.

There's plenty of parking, a patio area with picnic tables, and a small pavilion to stand outside while staying out of the weather. The park consists of a small wooded hill the parking lot is on, and a wide open field that ranges from a fence bordering River Grove Elementary, and reaching south down towards the Tualatin River. It's a peaceful quiet spot to feel in touch with nature on a nice day. Why is it only rated three stars then? Honestly, there's not a lot here. Aside from the open field, a couple of benches, and a motivational peace pole, that's it. There's no local playground or many other features that make Pilkington Park stand out from its other competitors across the city. The park doesn't even have proper bathrooms, and it feels as though the city reserved the space and started building a park, only to give up halfway with a minimalist response. While not the greatest park, it certainly is a good park, and is well worth the time to visit.

The grass was mowed and there isn't anything to hide your dog from sight, but the downside for us was that meant there wasn't anywhere for our pup to hide when she was ganged up on by bigger dogs. If your dog is comfortable with that, this is a great open area for them :)
