This is one of the most beautiful, most well-maintained city parks I have been to in a long time!…read more I've been looking at the big swatch of green that represents this park on Apple Maps for a long time and decided to finally make the drive and check it out. I'm so glad I did! What struck me first and most about this park was how clean and well maintained it is. They have a delightful sand box with water feature that, I'm sure, will keep the kids busy all day. They also have a very unique and creative rope contraption to climb on (I don't know what the cool kids call it). And there's a skate park, basketball court, baseball diamond, and tennis court to keep everyone happy. We were there on Friday night and the tennis court was filled with folks playing Pickle Ball. So cool to see so many people outside and active on a beautiful summer evening. Finally, there's a wide, well maintained walking path along the river that is delightful. It's so awesome to find a public place like this. We all need more of this!

We used to…read morelive in the neighborhood until our recent move, so we could just walk down the hill, put a little pepperoni on a hook and reel them in (see photo). My husband was actually very ambitious and constructed a crawdad trap, but I think the hook works just as well. My youngest boy is obsessed with fishing so this provided hours of entertainment and a nice outing for father and son. This is a very natural park that was created in a flood plane. No playgrounds here. Just a park with wetlands and a prairie with natural grass for walking your dog, jogging, fishing or launching your canoe or kayak from the pier. Great birdwatching as well. The city was able to buy up a lot of riverfront property (due to said flood plane) so over the past five years the park has continued to expand. It was a very smart move since the Tualatin River flooded the banks at least four times in the ten years I lived in the neighborhood and water would extend all the way to (or across) Nyberg Lane. This park is also the site of a wonderful arts camp for kids, Willowbrook, in the summer months and Alder Creek operates a canoe and kayak rental from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Don't forget your pepperoni!

There are some parking spots in front and also street parking, but on busy days parking can be limited. There is plenty of room to find a spot to put down a blanket or chairs. There are several areas to swim in per the level/age of the swimmer. We appreciate that there are lifeguards there as well. If the kids need something to do outside of playing in the lake there is basketball, shuffle board, ping pong, and a play structure.

The beach area is covered with lots of trees from large trees, there is plenty of room to picnic (grills available), a snack bar, restrooms, playground and lake access. This beach is closed to everyone except those that live within the boundaries of a Lake Grove School District. Fortunately I have friends who live on the canal and I'm invited out often for boat rides and to anchor and swim in the swimming hole by this beach. Water is surprisingly warmer than I ever predict, but still a cool and refreshing 77 which feels awesome on a hot summer day. This summer, 2020, we enjoyed many pop-up concerts where the band performed on a barge. Missing all the concert and movies in the park, this was a welcomed way to enjoy summer while being socially distanced. My favorite day is July 4th when the town of Lake O lights fireworks over the lake. This is open to anyone, but obviously it's super crowded so if you plan on watching from the beach, get there super early! We watch from the boat, anchoring and tying up with other boats, and then enjoy the magnificent display of fireworks and their reflection on the water while sipping wine, enjoying snacks and great conversation. It's one of my favorite nights of the year! Sadly, the fireworks were cancelled in 2020, along with most everything, but I still spent several heavenly days and evenings on the lake.

There's plenty of parking, a patio area with picnic tables, and a small pavilion to stand outside while staying out of the weather. The park consists of a small wooded hill the parking lot is on, and a wide open field that ranges from a fence bordering River Grove Elementary, and reaching south down towards the Tualatin River. It's a peaceful quiet spot to feel in touch with nature on a nice day. Why is it only rated three stars then? Honestly, there's not a lot here. Aside from the open field, a couple of benches, and a motivational peace pole, that's it. There's no local playground or many other features that make Pilkington Park stand out from its other competitors across the city. The park doesn't even have proper bathrooms, and it feels as though the city reserved the space and started building a park, only to give up halfway with a minimalist response. While not the greatest park, it certainly is a good park, and is well worth the time to visit.
