I live in Chicago which is basically the mecca for sandwiches, (sangwich if you're a local) but Primanti is the gem of the east. I habitually get the capocollo (gabagool). That means bread - meat - fries - slaw - bread. I also have an Iron City because - well - Iron City. This trip I started the Pitts-burger. Soft bread with a perfectly spiced burger patty and the some delicious fries and tangy cole slaw. This was a truly remarkable sandwich. I didn't eat it as much as I experienced it. Nikki - the young woman who ran the packed joint like a well-oiled machine - really took good care of us - and always with a smile. When we were getting ready to leave after a couple days in the Steel City - we went back to see Nikki and try a new sandwich. We both went with the pastrami. It was amazing. My buddy and I have traveled a lot and have eaten many pastrami sandwiches, but the Primanti spin on the classis is peerless. We said good-bye to our new friend, Nikki, and headed back to the Windy City - planning our next trip to Pittsburgh. and Primanti Bros on the Strip.

The sandwich itself was okay - just wished that the pastrami was actually hot - it was a little weird, since the items seemed to have been heated on the grill. Bread was forgettable. The fries were tasty, as they were hand-cut; honestly, they were better pulled out of the sammie and eaten separately with the cheese sauce. Staff were friendly, and there were a handful of people dining in; we were thinking of stopping by earlier, but there was a line during the lunch rush. You can also order online for a convenient pickup. Metered parking available in the area. +cheese sauce +tasty fries +friendly staff

Located right in the heart of downtown, it was easy to find and put us right in the middle of the city's energy and charm. From the moment we walked in, we were impressed by how welcoming the restaurant felt. Even on a Saturday night, they weren't overly busy, and our group was seated immediately without any wait. The ambiance was fantastic, with a warm and lively atmosphere that made for a great dining experience. One of the standout features was the iconic Backdraft display, which showcases many of Pittsburgh's legendary sports figures and local greats. It's a unique touch that gives the restaurant plenty of character and local pride. For my meal, I ordered the New Yorker sandwich with fries on the side, and it was absolutely delicious. The sandwich was packed with flavor and generously portioned. In fact, it was so large that I could only finish half of it, which means I get to enjoy the other half tomorrow. The fries were also excellent and complemented the sandwich perfectly. We also ordered a side of the wedge mozzarella and the Retro onion rings to share. Both appetizers were tasty and generously sized, though they were priced similarly to some of the sandwiches on the menu. Even so, they were enjoyable additions to the meal and offered plenty for sharing. Overall, we had a wonderful experience. Between the convenient downtown location, friendly service, welcoming atmosphere, and outstanding food, this restaurant exceeded our expectations. We're glad we took our friend's recommendation and gave it a try. The next time we're in Pittsburgh, we'll definitely be back.

Perhaps because it was a holiday and they may have been understaffed, taking our orders and receiving our sandwiches took quite awhile. The music (I call butt rock) was an odd niche for a mixed crowd. We ordered the Pastrami and fish sandwiches, which of course come with fry's and cole slaw on the sandwich. Given the industrial size paper towel rolls on the tables, I expected the sandwich to drip sauce. The fish was surprisingly dry and the cole slaw lacked vinegar and mayo. I supplemented with hot sauce from the table. Despite being to dry, the sandwiches were decent and quite large.

We got on the list and waited about 35 minutes for a spot at the bar. The restaurant itself has a casual Italian American vibe, with a small bar in the front and a dining area on the side. So happy we got a spot there because our bartender/server Nami was one of the best service experiences I've ever had. She asked us if we had been there before, gave us the rundown on the handmade pasta, what they're known for, and more. She mentioned the gnocchi being their top seller, but I'm not the biggest fan. However, the girl next to me got the gnocchi and meatballs, so snuck a pic of that just for sharing. They are HUGE and puffy and might make me change my mind about gnocchi. Anyway, Nami was so fun and attentive without being overbearing, and the place was busy as hell. She even made sure we had some cookies to take home when we declined dessert, telling us she didn't want us to have any regrets. Spoiler, the cookies totally hit the spot later in our hotel when we needed a little sweet before bed. Ok, onto the food. Nami brought us the fluffiest, most beautiful foccacia bread with olive oil and balsamic vinegar for dipping to start. We ordered the stuffed mushrooms, which were cooked to perfection, filled with this decadent mushroom mousse and then surrounded by a bright and flavor tomato onion jam that we kept scooping up with everything we could find. For our entree we shared the Salsiccia e Cavolo - which is fusilli, sweet sausage, braise cabbage, onions, cream, nutmeg and parmesan. What a perfect, cozy, delicious pasta for a fall night. It was creamy, flavorful, pasta was perfectly cooked. We took the leftovers back with us and it also reheated beautifully with a bit of water over the stove, so we got to enjoy it twice. Highly recommend a dinner here if you can get a table/spot at the bar, did not disappoint. If I'm ever back in Pittsburgh, I'll be back to give the gnocchi and meatballs a try.

It was incredibly responsible and thoughtful that they had ingredients listed for their goodies. Everything looked delicious. We chose the family style wood slab high-top table. I ordered the meatball sub- it was delicious. Three massive meatballs on warm crispy bread and three cheeses. It was absolutely delicious. I ate my meatball sandwich with a knife and fork, because it knew I'd make a mess if I'd attempted otherwise; I was very pleased with the portions. This is a challenging review. I haven't been to Gaucho in a while. The last time we visited was in…read morethe downtown location and it was really very good--reminiscent of the Strip location, but a little fancier and with more room to sit. If I hadn't been here before, I would probably rate my Gaucho experience four stars, but this spot (I hate when people say this, and I hate when I sound like those people!) just isn't what it used to be. Dammit. I went there. I had my favorite sandwich--the braised beef. It used to have a really nice, pronounced rosemary flavor. Not so much anymore. And it used to come on a really beautiful slab (not an overstatement) of Gaucho's delicious focaccia. Now it's on an ordinary roll that doesn't stand up to that slow cooked, beef. The beef was still good and tender and flavorful, and the portion is still generous, but the sandwich overall isn't the knockout it once was. It wasn't a bad sandwich. It was a good sandwich. But it wasn't the sandwich I went for. My husband's carne sandwich was on the same ho-hum roll. (Bring back the focaccia as sandwich vehicle, guys!) The beef was flavorful with that nice Gaucho char, but it was a little chewy and hard to eat. Like my sandwich, the bread was the crime here. It was a decent sandwich, but a shadow of its former self. The potatoes...the travesty of the table were the greasy, small, overly charred flimsy potatoes. Maybe you'll remember the roasted papas from the old Gaucho days: chunky, crispy on the outside, toasty and roasty, served up in a wooden bowl. These were definitely not that. (Also, does anyone remember that old-time Strip District Gaucho bowl of corn? The best best best.) The service was very fast and very friendly. The gentleman who brought our food brought us a complimentary dish of all four chimmis--which was so nice, and they are exactly the same as they've always been and absolutely delicious. (Pimenton will always win first place for me. Slather it on a piece of cardboard and I might eat it.) Overall, our meal was fine, but I'm sad to know that Gaucho at its best is in our rear view.
