Iced rock hard cold one cheesecake that went straight in trash. Was not eatable
    Sonia K.

First time excited to try out this place and I was disappointed! Save your time and money. Purchased a cheesecake and it was served to me straight out of the freezer hard as a rock. I was told by the clerk it "give it some time" it will melt soon. 2 hours later still cold and icy! What a waste.

Have tried many of the previous boba shops here before this restaurant. So since we're frequently in the area, thought I'd give this place a try. Customer service: nice. Parking: free now, they've removed the bars and no ticket needed when you enter. Taste: the taro cloud cup looks more slender than the picture in the menu and different than in other reviewers' pictures. It's ok, understandable. Inflation. The taro smoothie I got without cheese foam tasted sweet and yummy. The boba though chewy and had a good portion but unfortunately was bland for me/"tasteless" (according to my children, though they enjoyed their Strawberry Yakult with lychee jelly). $8.45 but I probably won't get again.

This cafe is run by one barista so we had to wait a few minutes to get our order in. We waited 20 minutes for two milk teas and a Yakult tea. The milk tea was very watered down. The cafe itself it's nicely decorated, but no lights were on inside.

    Tiger milk tea with boba

I got the tiger milk tea with boba, it was pretty good. The service was pretty quick, I was just a little annoyed because the employee never looked me in the eye for my order, she just had her head down at the screen.

We've been trying to find a good boba and popcorn chicken place and this place was a major disappointment. The picture outside didn't match the price nor the food inside. By 5 pm they had already run out of boba even though they close at 11 pm. The popcorn chicken was changed and is now an over salted disappointment that's more similar to small chicken nuggets. The service was whatever and the decorations are nice but you're better off going to boba cafe which is in the same plaza.

    Oolong Milk Tea

I ordered the oolong milk tea with boba at 25% sweetness. I expected that the drink would be less sweet, but I was disappointed by how bland and watered down it was. There was barely any tea flavor, and the tapioca pearls were also flavorless. My friends enjoyed their drinks, so it could be that adjusting the sweetness level will water down the drink.

So sad their popcorn chicken looks nothing like it was advertised, bought it expecting the typical Taiwanese popcorn chicken since they literally have an image of it, when it came out it looked like mini chicken nuggets and tasted like mini chicken nuggets :( drink was okay though but I wasted like $7 to buy chicken nuggets basically.. I could've just gone to mcd atp As for a study spot, it's okay it has free wifi but it's slow not good for if you have a tight deadline

spam musubi, fries (garlic), and wintermelon drink :)
    Casey A.

not a huge selection for snacks, which is a little funny considering the name of the shop :p i got the garlic fries and i think the pricing was pretty fair for what i received, and my roommate was very pleased with her spam musubi and drink combo. the portion of the garlic fries was very filling, which i appreciated! i only wish that the garlic seasoning was much stronger, as the garlic taste was pretty subtle. in addition to this, our cashier was really nice, and the barista(?) on duty was very quick to get us our food, despite the several people in the shop. i'll most likely return to try their cajun fries next :) pretty decent spot for a quick snack stop!

    Fake popcorn chicken

Food and drinks are horrible. The boba is too hard. The Peach Yakut drink tastes full of artificial sweeteners. Worst of all, the popcorn chicken is fake. It is microwave warmed tiny circular chicken nuggets. Shame on them for cheating the money from hard working students.

The popcorn chicken that I got

Can you say catfish? I ordered a cloudy mango drink and popcorn chicken that they had on DoorDash and definitely did not get what I ordered. Never ordering from here again.

The "fish" waffle that took forever to prepare.
    Nonnie T.

Great drinks, nice server, very slow service delivery that costed me $ in parking. The snack took forever (close to 30 minutes) to be served. We already finished our drinks and the little "fish" waffle was not yet served. Ambience is pleasantly quiet.

Negative stars. False advertising on door dash Offer 2 for 1 annnnnnnd nope only 1 drink provided. They did not honor the deal. Will not order again. The tayaiki fish were undercooked will not waste time or money here again.

    Mangonada
    Jessica Y.

Wandered in here while I was in University Village for lunch and found out they had a deal going on where you get a free taiyaki with a purchase of a drink! For the fillings you can choose apple, strawberry, cheese, or nutella. I ended up getting a nutella taiyaki as well as a mangonada 30$ sugar. The taiyaki was nothing crazy, but for free I truly can't complain. The mangonada was very refreshing and perfect for 100+ degree weather. Chamoy isn't for everyone though so the sourness/spiciness might throw you off if you're not sure what to expect. I really liked that I was able to adjust the sweetness of it so it didn't feel like I was drinking straight sugar. I probably would've liked it more if there was slightly less chamoy. The inside is very cute, and would be a great place to sit and catch up with friends or maybe even study. I also experienced really great customer service. She could tell I was overwhelmed by all the options on the menu and she asked if I wanted any recommendations. You can get 2 free hour parking in the area and after that I believe it's $2 every 30 minutes but not sure if the restaurants validate the parking ticket or not.

I saw they have a pastry shelf of muffins. I ordered the 12oz iced horchata latte. They have multiple sizes. Once I received it, I did taste some horchata, not much. It was still good though. The coffee shop itself is perfect for downtown Riverside--very fitting with the vibe and style. The lady working was very friendly. However, the menu is extremely busy, and you practically need a key to understand what's what or even how to order. Once we ordered, I noticed the ceremonial matcha is made with a handheld electric frother, and the cold foams are premade in jars and simply added on top (not made fresh). When we received our matchas, let's just say it tasted exactly like it looked: mostly milk with very little matcha flavor, topped with subpar cold foam. This is by far the most expensive, worst-tasting matcha I've ever had. I can usually find a way to justify things or give a place some grace, but this was beyond help.

I didn't want to enter any cafe very small/ with petite tables or judgement if I sat down for 1.5 hr to work on my computer. I bought a sausage croissant which was just ok, but still a nice quick breakfast item. I was able to sit in a comfy chair with an outlet source & table to conference in my meeting. I was left unbothered & comfortable the whole time, which I greatly appreciated. There are several lounge chairs, tables & areas to space out to work, read, lounge, etc! I would certainly return another day to try out their coffee menu and those earl grey lavender scones (wish I saw those first!!) The barista was kind & the atmosphere very pleasant!

SERVICE here is VERY BAD!…read more The service at Back to the Grind was genuinely one of the most unprofessional customer service experiences I've had. While I was in the middle of placing my order, an older gentleman wearing glasses abruptly walked away from me mid-conversation to speak with someone he knew. No acknowledgment, no "I'll be right back," nothing. I was left standing there confused and waiting while they casually chatted amongst themselves. At the same time, my husband approached another employee -- a young woman with very long black hair and a pink bandana (see pic)-- simply to ask for the WiFi password. Without even looking at him, she told him he needed to "buy something first." When he explained that I was already ordering, she repeated herself in a dismissive tone and continued making sandwiches without making eye contact once. What stood out most wasn't just the lack of hospitality, but the overall attitude from multiple staff members. The environment felt cold, dismissive, and inconvenienced by customers being there at all. Ironically, the café advertises community classes like yoga and live meditation classes on the window, yet basic customer service and professionalism seem completely absent. The food itself was fine, which is why this review is specifically about the service experience. Even after how poorly we were treated, I still left a tip because I refuse to match that level of disrespect. Management seriously needs to address the customer service culture here. One rude interaction can happen anywhere -- but multiple employees displaying the same behavior reflects a larger issue.

As far as options go, I think there's a decent selection of more unique syrups for coffees. They do change it up throughout the year. The drinks here are definitely more of a premium price point, but I think they're generally good. On this particular trip, I wanted to try their new syrup flavor (it was some form of orange zest, or something similar?), but noticed my latte had no real flavor in it after a few sips. Upon looking at the receipt, the person who took my order just gave me a regular cafe latte and didn't add the syrup I requested. The coffee was fine, but I would have liked trying something new. I have gotten several of their food options before, and I think that some of them are well-priced for the portion and some can be more on the expensive side. I think the avocado toast was pretty robust and was a good value. The steak and eggs are somewhat hit or miss, and I have had it multiple times. The cut of the meat can be chewy at times, and then also more lean and tender other times. Sometimes it comes with large pieces of chewy fat, which isn't quite to my taste. The sandwich options generally are a good value. I do kind of wish they switched up their menu a bit more often, since this current menu is rather basic and they have had more interesting food options before. Overall, a decent choice for a more premium coffee, tea, and food for the Downtown/UCR area of Riverside. Service is okay, and I have had somewhat mixed experiences with that. The employees generally seem pleasant and they're nice, but I have gotten incorrect orders at least a couple of times. During this particular visit, in which the photos are from, I had to ask two different people to get extra napkins. Our actual server was the first to acknowledge, then possibly forgot and didn't come back.
