Amazing options in a hideaway spot in Hyde Park. If I hadn't seen an advert for this in my alum magazine, I never would have known about it because we are never on the south side of the Midway. I brought my girls here the day after Christmas after a visit to the MSI and we had a delicious lunch! Lots of small plate options to share and the fish and chips is not to be missed. I came here on a date on a Thursday evening. When we got there, it was pretty quiet and picked up steadily as the evening went on. I love the atmosphere and decor. The service was fine, and the hostess was friendly. The cons: first off, our table was weirdly small. It was awkward to have our plates, water glasses, and menus all on the table at once. Then as far as the menu goes, I would not recommend coming here if you're a vegetarian (which I'm not, but just a note) I don't recall any of the entrees or sandwiches being vegetarian friendly. I got the chicken pie and it was REALLY salty. I'm kind of a salt addict but this was way overboard. It sounded really promising but I didn't like it because of the salt. My husband got the burger and he seemed to like it fine. Their fries (or chips, I suppose) were great. The cost was a little overpriced given the portion size but I was expecting as much. Our dinner experience on Valentine's Day night was poor and disappointing. Arriving at the restaurant and being seated were fine. The host took us (3 of us) to our table right away and as he was dropping off the menu, he recognized he had the wrong menu (he mentioned this) and went back to the host stand to get the Standard Menus. As we were sitting, we noticed there was a counter with a large pile of unfolded napkins sitting right near us. Not very welcoming, for a restaurant of this type but rather something I'd expect in a family owned restaurant, tucked away in a neighborhood. After some time had passed, the waiter came around to at least acknowledge us. A little later, he brought out a complimentary oyster dish that was barely warm. Mind you there were also only two place settings for the table and it took a minute before I could ask for another one. Even longer passed before he came back around to take our orders. After we started to share our order, he said that we could not order off the Standard Menu and we needed to order off the Valentine's Menu. I shared with him the message you sent to me, but he insisted the other menu was not available. He went to talk to the host and they deliberate just over by the kitchen, which was right behind us. After several minutes he came back and mentioned we had to order off the Valentine's Menu. Ordering off the menu was very confusing and perhaps he wasn't explaining how it worked. Appetizers came out in relatively short order. Still no plates though so had to wait for someone to come around where I could ask for some. Also, they kept ignoring the fact there were three of us at the table and only brought back two plates. Salads also came out in a timely fashion after the appetizer, so no issues there. Entree came out and was very underwhelming and disappointing. Sauce on the tenderloin was over-salted. The meal was more reflective on a single dish at most restaurants around town rather than a shared dish. Again, no clean plates without request. Into the entree, my wife and I ordered the Apple Cider Margarita and the Uncle Nearest Old Fashion. These drinks never came by the end of our meal, and we ended up informing our waiter to cancel them. He was surprised we never got them, which is interesting because he brought out drinks to the table behind us and was really the only waiter in our side of the restaurant. He mentioned the bar was missing a lot of orders that night. Dessert came out (shared chocolate cake) which was huge (that's a good thing). Clean plates still an issue and needed to request it. Cake was cold; very firm to the touch. Throughout the dinner, the kitchen was doing their thing by calling out orders. The turnoff though was that the chef was constantly complaining about the orders coming in, from both menus! Essentially, the restaurant was still taking orders off the Standard Menu, you just had to be seated on the bar side. The chef was making comments to the staff that he was going to write a long email about the menu issues all while continually complaining very loudly. The waiter throughout the night was very nice, and possibly just understaffed as there was a lot of waiting. Dinner for the three of us took just over 2 hours, and where were several empty tables, so it was not extraordinarily busy. I did not short him on a tip, but overall our meal and dining experience was nowhere near the cost of the meal! For that same amount, there are plenty of more upscale restaurants and dining experiences available; even on Valentine's Day. I felt the restaurant forced me to order from the Prix Fixe menu when there were clearly others ordering from the standard menu. The up-charge for the menu didn't seem to align with the meal or the experience, and most of the meal felt designed for one on a normal day. For the few quality restaurants in the Hyde Park neighborhood, we were extremely disappointed with our meal at Truth Be Told and do not intend on returning or referring this restaurant. read more

Took my parents and my niece to this wonderful place last night. Food was excellent. We ordered the pickled beets and the marinated olives as starters. Great choice - our party ordered shepherds pie, bangers and mash and tandoori chicken. I had the chicken. Not only was it moist and delicious, the rice was incredible! I could sit and eat a tub of that rice with a spoon and be happy. We will definitely be back. read more

My wife and I were excited to have an evening out for our 5th anniversary while a family member watched our toddler. Service, food, and atmosphere were excellent. I was delighted they have oysters. My companion's baby gem salad, for example, combined anchovies, cheese, pickles, capers, lettuce, and several other top-shelf ingredients to pack quite the punch of "wow!" My cheese sandwich and its companion salad were also tasty. I must say that, like Bar David next door, my suspicions about these on-campus eateries have been pleasantly dispelled. I took off one star because I think their menu needs more vegetarian options and their staff simply more people (service was a tad slow, but friendly). Truth Be Told....it's average! I had the Fish and Chips and my wife the Mac and Cheese. My wife said her Mac and Cheese was good, but not great. The same can be said for the Fish and Chips. We had the Prawns as an appetizer. It's reminiscent of a shrimp cocktail. Again, just average. If you're staying in the adjacent hotel or work near the Midway, it's probably a good option. Otherwise, it's really not a place I'd go out of my way to visit again. read more

Well--it serves pretty mediocre British pub food -described on the menu and priced as if it were something much better. I might have given it more than two stars because it is a comfortable, pretty place with friendly servers -if it weren't for our experience with their oysters. These are $42 a dozen and were not properly separated from their shells. Since they were also small and seemed a little down market--we didn't get much oyster once we had hacked at them with our knives and forks. This past Sunday's brunch plans led us to this cozy corner. Located on the campus of the University of Chicago and adjacent to The Study Hotel. Street parking was easy to find and free. Once inside this place is so cute and endearing. Perfect spot for a date night, brunch, or any other reason to visit. The staff was super nice and welcoming. The decor is very simple and clean with a fireplace in the center of the restaurant. We had a reservation for a party of 6 and were seated immediately. None of us knew what to expect when we ordered, but we were all pleasantly surprised. Besides one of our guests having hair in her food. Everyone cleaned their plates. I know. Hair in food is never good. However, they were extremely apologetic and accommodating. Her dish (eggs Benedict) was remade at no cost and she ate it all. That said. Our meals were hot, fresh, and layered with flavor. The textures and taste were perfect. Visually appealing as the plating was intentional. I only took pictures of what I ordered, but as a point of reference from the other meals at our table the potatoes were crisp and soft, and the pancakes weren't super sweet. Both of these are good to know because the reason I didn't get the pancakes is that I thought they'd be a sugar bomb. Without a doubt, I'll be back for those two items and more. Great service. Poor quality, poor service. I always give a company or a person the benefit of the doubt. Everyone has a bad day, but three bad days are unacceptable. Day 1: The steak was chewy and had an unusual taste of old. The salad was 90 % lettuce and 10% disgusting. The staff was disrespectful to the manager. Day 2: Breakfast. Other than the crispy bottom of the pancake, breakfast was okay. But I am taken aback that the waiter comes to the table in street clothes--no uniform--nothing that signifies he works at the restaurant. Day 3: We ordered room service. You can not mess up a burger, right? Wrong. They could not deliver to our room--there was a staff shortage due to an event. We came for our dinner 40 minutes later as instructed. The meal was not ready. It will be another 15 minutes, and they still won't deliver. We waited 15 minutes to find out our order was given to the wedding rehearsal party outside. Out of my site and the manager's site. The manager retrieved the meal. Now, I do not take food that has been given to others. Curious, I looked at the burger, and the order was wrong. I cannot recommend this place. It is the worst restaurant I have been to in my 54 years. read more

We had a family dinner at Truth Be Told on the campus of the University of Chicago. We were a group of 6, so we made a reservation. Although we arrived early, we were seated immediately. There is a nice selection of beer, and a good variety on the menu. The wait staff worked with us to find gluten free options and everyone was happy with their meals. The age range in our group spanned from and 18 year old student to a 90 year old grandmother, so it might be safe to say there was something for everyone. We were there in the daylight for a an early dinner. It was cozy without being dark, and clean and modern; not at all cold. There is a nice fireplace. The curry mussels were delicious. Fish and chips was another good choice. The salads were huge. I think Wednesday is half price wine, which is a great deal. I will return when I visit campus again. read more

I have been to Truth Be Told on several occasions, and the food is consistently good. Unfortunately, the service is consistently not good. It's not clear to me if they are understaffed, or the servers are just checked out. Regardless, it results in very slow service with food being brought out randomly and often the entrees are delivered before the appetizers (if they even remember you ordered them).
