Being a homeowner means you have a list of things that never ends: upgrades, repairs, and routine…read moremaintenance always keeps us on our toes. This week's task was handling a potential infestation of rodents. Oh joy! Nothing like having your home be a home for unwanted critters, and, well, eww. Roberto showed up on time, even messaging when he was on his way, listened to my concerns, and took a look around our basement. I was relieved to find out that it did not appear as if we had a big problem, or at least as big of a problem like I had feared, and that he would look outside as well. Once outside, Roberto inspected the house and found the likely point of ingress for mice. It made total sense because the gap in the siding coincided with where the soffit for the ductwork is in the basement. He gave me quotes on the services that were available, ranging from quarterly visits to a one-time sealing of the house, and then gave me some ideas on what I could do to handle some things myself. The service charge was $99, and if you sign up for one of their quarterly services or another one of their offerings, then that service charge is rolled into part of the overall fee. I was super-pleased with that part of the arrangement and I look forward to utilizing their services. Very responsive, easy to set an appointment, and a relatively thorough inspection, all in the span of less than an hour. Great experience!

Technician, Alan, arrived on time and he was very thorough and explained the treatment. He fully treated both inside and outside the house for pests, and was very pleasant to interact with. Alan also explained the kid and pet friendly chemical being used, and proper post treatment requirements. We hope to see a reduction in pests in the coming weeks, and will update the review with its value if anything changes.

TLDR: The Local Guy Pest Service was reasonably priced, honest, and did great work. I will…read morerecommend them to everyone! Long version: My lawn mower called to tell me he "found" a nest of yellow jackets burrowed into the ground when he ran over it with his lawnmower. Fortunately he is ok and only got stung once when they swarmed out because he started taking his weed whacker to them. It was after hours when he called me so I couldn't do anything about it until the next day. I did some research and made a few phone calls, then created a Yelp project as well. Several places returned my call and insisted on doing monthly maintenance after the initial treatment, even though I insisted I wanted them gone the first time they came and didn't want to do anything monthly. I'm not unrealistic, I know it is a HUGE hazard and a big deal to get rid of the any type of hornet, but some of the prices I was being quoted were equivalent to car payments, and the others didn't offer options without the monthly fees. I was getting discouraged by how much many places were fear mongering and trying to upsell me, so on Saturday I called up the lawn guy to see if he was still willing to get rid of them for me (he had offered to take carte of them himself, but I didn't want him getting swarmed and stung again so I told him to let me make some calls first). He was hesitant, but was still willing to do it. He was going to do some checking to see what he needed to do and how and let me know how much he needed for supplies and do it the next week. Skip ahead to Sunday afternoon. On Sunday one of the companies I had called, The Local Guy Pest Control, called me back and immediately apologized for taking so long to return my call (he had been out of town). No worries, I understand that. It is a small, local, family owned business where the owner himself comes out to do the service. Great! I love to support small businesses! How much to get rid of the problem and what will you do? (By now I had a pretty good idea of what it would take to kill the colony and destroy the nest, courtesy of bee and wasp handlers form all over the country posting videos online.) The owner showed up at my house bright and early on Tuesday, within 24 hours of me agreeing to use his service Monday morning. He was at my house for about 30 minutes and got rid of the colony, then treated the nest so any stragglers who were already out for the day would die when they returned. He was fast, thorough, and efficient. The price was very reasonable for the amount of time and risk involved in the job, AND he assured me that monthly maintenance was definitely NOT needed. He offered a guarantee on his services, so if I notice renewed activity I can simply call him back to take care of it. Tuesday night I let my lawn mower know the deed was done and that he didn't need to worry about doing it. He returned Wednesday evening to mow, so I checked in with him on the status of the nest. He reported back that not one single yellow jacket came out of the hole they were in, so all was well. SO many thanks to The Local Guy Pest Service! My mom is allergic and my dog is small, so this was literally a life-saving service for them! I will go to The Local Guy Pest Service first for ALL of my future needs, you have earned a new repeat customer with this one.

My regular pest guys don't mess with hornets, and if they don't, I don't either. Enter Critter Control. This group has good reviews and also came recommended by the other pest group, so it felt like all signs pointed to them. I don't love the whole "fill out this thing on our website for a quote" only to have the convo moved to a game of phone tag that ensued, so I'd recommend just calling them. They were able to get the tech out (Colton) almost right away. He got up on a ladder, slapped some kind of instant-kill dust on them, and hightailed it out. After the dusty corpses fell to the ground, he came back the next day to seal it up and remove the portions of the nest he could reach. So far so good, and I'm hopeful that this was the end of it. It stinks to pay for something like this but it beats the alternative of getting up on a dodgy ladder with a couple dozen angry yellowjackets coming after you. Alternatively, if you leave them or seal them, they'll grow like crazy and maybe even burrow into the house. No bueno! So yeah, I'd recommend this group and will update if this effort didn't take but seems to be all good.

The other company led me to believe it was racoons and were fully planning to dismantle my chimney to get them out. They also told me about some egg in my attic that they just left there and were unable to identify. Colton removed the egg (don't worry, wasn't a snake. Just an old bird egg) and gave me an entire plan for bat prevention in my attic. He came back in August when he said he would to finish the job when the bat babies would be guaranteed to be gone. Great at communicating with me throughout the process. I felt like they were honest and so incredibly helpful. THANK YOU!
