Yesterday was my first time at Truss and I can honestly say my experience was wonderful. The lady at the front was extremely helpful and SO nice. I got to speak to the manager as well because I wanted to compliment the food, drinks and service. He was so friendly and appreciative. Had my first visit here on a Friday evening this past August. We met a few of our friends here to enjoy a night out with some beer, food, and live music. I have previously heard of Truss and seen them around the community at different events, but was excited to finally try them at their storefront. Truss Brewing Company is located in Pleasant Hills, just off of Route 51. This building has been other businesses throughout the years before Truss took over. It is clearly marked and easy to locate. There is a private parking lot in the rear, but they will have it closed off and filled with tables during the summer months. However, there are other lots and parking options surrounding the building along Old Clairton if this is the case when you visit. We arrived just after 7:00, and the place was packed! They had the back parking lot closed off for seating, but luckily we found a spot right in front. There is no indoor seating here, as they advertise the business to be take-out only. Therefore, you can order online or through some delivery services if you truly are taking the order to-go. However, if you are "dining in," you can order at the counter inside. They will give you an order number, and then call the order number outside for you to come retrieve. First, we made our way inside to place an order. There was a decent line that went out the door, but we made it through that in about 10 minutes. Ordering was straight-forward, as the menu is not terribly long. For the beers, there were some different size options. Also, they sold reusable cans, crowlers, growlers, and mini kegs that can be brought back and refilled. In addition to the made-to-order food and beer, there are some snacks, grocery items, non-alcoholic drinks, and merchandise all for sale. After placing our order, we made our way to the back parking lot to find some seating. As stated, there was a live band performing and the place was pretty full. However, we did manage to get a table. There were picnic-style tables, as well as some bar-height seating. I also saw some patrons bring their own lawn chairs, so that is an option as well! The atmosphere outside was very lively. The music was good, there were a lot of groups socializing and having a good time, and there were some yard games set up on the one side of the lot. Definitely a nice spot to bring the family or meet up with some friends if the weather is nice. The wait from ordering to when we got our food was about 30 minutes. I know the food is prepared in-house, and is not generic restaurant pre-made-type food, so this is reasonable considering that. My fiance and I split a few dishes between us. We ordered the Chilled Colossal Shrimp, the Big Fat "Wings," and the Wood Fries Parm Crusted. The Chilled Colossal Shrimp came with 5 and a nice dipping sauce. I love cold shrimp, so this was my favorite dish. The Big Fat "Wings" are chicken drumsticks prepared like wings. Since it is a different cut, you get a lot of meat for your money. We ordered them with the buffalo sauce on the side as well. They were tasty, and again, a great way to make your dollar stretch for a lot of meat! The Wood Fries Parm Crusted are unique, as they are very thick cut. It is probably over a whole potato's worth of fries, so plenty to share. My fiance loves thick-cut fries like this, so he thought these were great. We enjoyed the food overall! For my beer, I ordered the Mortar, which is an American Brown Ale. I usually prefer a brown/red/amber-type of pour, so this was right up my alley. It was a nice sipper to have throughout the night. In terms of value, I think some items have a much better value than others. Specifically, I thought the fries and the chicken were very much worth the money. I personally did not order a pizza this trip, but some of those seemed to be slightly expensive to me personally. Despite that, you can make it worth your dollar depending on what you order and what you are looking for most. Since this place is take-out only, I truly did not have a ton of interaction with the staff, except for when I put my order in. I had no issues regarding this, though I feel as though I did not have enough interaction to make a comment on this aspect of the trip either way. Likely due to all of the seating being outside, the business is dog-friendly! We brought our dog, and he enjoyed socializing with the patrons and many other dogs who were there as well. This was a great place to spend a sunny August evening! I enjoyed the beer, food, and atmosphere at Truss. We loved the live music, and learned on this trip that they regularly hold a trivia night and other events as well. The only downside is that this experience is seasonal, and weather-dependent. However, the food and beer are available year-round, so you can give that a try anytime. I would recommend checking this place out with the warmer months quickly approaching! read more

Place was "meh". Beer was ok but nothing special. Generic brewery menu with nothing that made you say "I need to try that. " Food was the same story. "Loaded fries" with beer cheese and bacon was potato wedges, smoked cheese sauce, and 3" slice of thick bacon. It wasn't, bad but it was awkward to eat. Especially without silverware. It's a takeout only spot, with some outdoor seating in the rear. There were lots of bugs and I got bit up for the 30 minutes we were there. You are also 20 ft away from the dumpster and the portajohn. Overall it was forgettable. I see no reason we will try to go back instead of trying another new place. Staff was friendly. Awesome brewing company with some delicious food offerings as well! Definitely worth checking out. I got to try out their margherita pizza and chocolate chip cookies. The portions are amazing for the price. Such a huge pie, but very nice thin crust, for just just $16. Definitely reasonable. The quality is also quite high. Nice char on the bottom, adequate amount of sauce and cheese. It definitely hits the spot if you're looking for some thinner crust pizza. The chocolate chip cookies were also pretty good. They also had peanut butter ones. The cookies did have a slightly strange burnt aftertaste. Still, I enjoyed them. They had loads of thick chocolate chunks that were delicious. Cool hang out with a beer garden vibe, a great meet up or meet people or dogs :) place! I can't say how often I've been disappointed with the lack of creativity, and over use of fried food, sub standard rubbery cooking of meats, and 'wood fired' with the taste of liquid smoke of so many restaurants. Truss is a cut above or maybe three. You will get your orders in pizza boxes and cute biodegradable containers, but don't think that you won't be blown away by the quality of what's inside! Organic ingredients including pizza dough, locally sourced staples; every salmon, chicken I've had on salads or entrees have been perfectly prepared and well presented. Wood Fired everything is never dry or overdone. Its really the real thing. I can always find healthy options. Summer menu's Avilene's Beet Hummus, Chicken Hainanese, Atlantic Salmon with house dill, Summer Salad as well as plenty of use of herbs, all of this score with this dietitian. My husband is a big fan of the pizza (Margherita and Detroit) and maybe I've had a bite or two :) He really has to have one a couple times a month if not every week. Couple that with House Beers and Seltzers (big fan of the Mango, Blackberry, Blood Orange-not on current menu but dang); and entertainment every Friday-love acoustic guitar! in a casual come as you are atmosphere, its all a win There's always a kind smile from everyone that works there, even in their busiest moments. This is my second review of Truss, and I still give it a 5/5 star. The Volcano pizza (see pic) is 10/10! The crispy peperoni and jalapeños pairs nice with savory ricotta, and the hot honey makes so good. A tip for patrons ordering a salad. I support local businesses but also want to comment on the $ value of thr salads to help make an informed decision. The pizza...100% worth the premium cost for a premium pizza. I ordered the spring salad with a chicken add-on, which was very tasty but the cost is a little outrageous for what you get. The veggies are sliced razor thin (which is tasty) but they are almost non-existent. The chicken add-on is 5$ and I weighed it at 2.2oz! The salad (see pic) is 18$ which is a terrible value. You could buy a second pizza starting at 16$, 2 dollars less than a plate of lettuce and veggie shavings. Again, the pizza is 10/10 amazing and worth the premium cost and the salad is tasty but not worth the money. read more

It's been a while since we've been to this brewery. It's the only brewery that I'm aware of in the pleasant Hills area. I felt like I needed to review it again because so much has changed since the last time I visited this brewery. Stepping back into the cozy confines of this boutique brewery, it felt like reconnecting with an old friend after years apart. My last visit here was in 2021-2022 timeframe, and as I walked through the door, I was greeted by the same warm ambiance and genuine hospitality that I remembered so fondly. The service, as expected, was nothing short of exceptional. The lady working the front friendly demeanor and attentiveness made me feel right at home from the moment I arrived. While this brewery has always been known for its stellar brews, I was eager to sample their latest offerings. And let me tell you, they did not disappoint. Among the array of tantalizing options, two brews stood out as clear favorites: the Red Brick Ale (Amber) and the Hazy IPA. The Red Brick Ale, with its rich amber hue and inviting aroma, was a true delight for the senses. With each sip, I was greeted by layers of caramel and toffee notes, perfectly complemented by a subtle hop bitterness. Its smooth, velvety texture and well-balanced flavor profile made it an instant classic, and I found myself savoring every last drop. Equally impressive was the Hazy IPA, a burst of tropical fruit flavors and refreshing citrus undertones that danced on the palate. Its hazy appearance hinted at the depth of flavor within, and I was thoroughly impressed by the brewmaster's skill in crafting such a harmonious and complex brew. Each sip was a journey of discovery, leaving me eager for the next. Of course, no visit to this brewery would be complete without indulging in their superb food offerings. We had the salmon, shrimp, fish and the 2 lb drumsticks enhanced with dry rub sauce. It was incredible from the first to the last bite. You order at the counter then take your drinks and food outdoors into their "backyard" which may be really nice in fall weather but not ideal in hot summer especially with lantern flies everywhere. We kept seeing the Truss Brewing menu floating around and decided to give it a try and am happy that we did! We got a hoagie, a salad and pizza. Everything was really good. Salads are usually hit or miss, but the winter salad was fantastic. Everything was super fresh which I really appreciated. The pizza is definitely wood fired so has the char flavor that comes with it. The hoagie had unique flavors, but flavors that worked well together. The Mac n cheese was okay, just not very flavorful. I found this gem on Groupon, and I'm sure glad I did! I want to note that they do not have any indoor seating, but they do offer seating on their patio and in the back of their establishment. Go in the warm months if you plan to hang out! The woman at the bar was awesome! She walked us through both the food and the drink menu. I'm not a beer drinker, so she suggested trying the seltzer. They make a plain seltzer and add flavors to it, so there are many options. I really liked the blood orange! We ordered a pizza and Buffalo drumsticks to eat. The pizza was delicious! The crust was thin and crispy, and it paired well with the seltzer! My only suggestion would be to provide guests with stronger utensils; I couldn't cut anything with the flimsy plastic knife and fork that were given. I can't tell if everyone is trolling in the reviews, or everyone doesn't have tastebuds. As a person who has worked in the food industry this is one of the worst places I've ever eaten. The fries were an absolute joke, the Philly steak was chewy, and the Margherita pizza was lacking any flavor it should have just been called cheese pizza. I don't typically make reviews but I am confused how such a local business cares so little about food quality. You don't see commonly anymore pizza being used in an artistic way and still be good. Nowhere in Pittsburgh...heck, nowhere in Pennsylvania comes anywhere near the creative spirit of Truss pizza. Yeah, you can get the same old Joe Schmoe pizza that you're used too, because you don't want to try anything new, but once you get a taste of Truss, there's no coming back. Growing up in Jefferson Hills, I was never used to having many local restaurants to pick from (outside of Ciccanti's, Al's Cone Zone, and the P Bar), and certainly not a brewery. Fast forward about 10 years after moving from J Hills, and all of a sudden there is a local brewery that even my 60+ year old parents like! Unheard of, and I knew we had to check it out during a visit back home. Truss is conveniently on Old Clairton, so easily accessible for many folk. It's a take-out-only spot, but they do have some seats on the porch in the front and plenty of tables and benches in the back, where they offer live music in the warmer weather. My parents gifted us with a decent food voucher for Truss, so my husband and I made our way over for beers and pies and to meet up with a high school classmate who has also since moved from the area. We arrived on a Saturday night in the fall and were excited to see there was live music. The music was a tad too loud for our liking, so we decided to snag a table on the porch area. We placed our order with the owner of Truss and chatted a bit with him to hear his story - loved to see that he was a local guy living out his dream (and adding a nice new spot to the beer desert of Jefferson and Pleasant Hills), and he was super friendly and helpful. Since they are take-out-only, all beer needs purchased in growlers, but we were pleased to see they had cool 16 oz reusable steel containers. I went for the Fast Peach - a sour cider that was refreshing for the warmer weather and super easy to drink. My husband went for the POG Wheat, which he also enjoyed and also felt was easy to drink. We also snagged a blood orange seltzer to go, which we gifted to my parents and heard rave reviews! For being a small operation, Truss has a surprisingly large variety of options to please everyone, and I was especially impressed by their selzter options - I'll be back over the summer! For food, we opted for the Truss Ricotta Pie and the Pierogi pizzas. We loved the lemon with the ricotta and arugula on the first pie and the scallions and kielbasa paired with the pierogies on the second pie. Again, for being a small place, their food and specifically pizza options were vast and super well done - love that they only have a wood fired oven on site and everything is fresh! Truss Brewing is a welcome addition to the area, and I'm super amazed at how Jefferson and Pleasant Hills has expanded in the last few years! I came into town to visit family, and I had the privilege of trying Truss. It's refreshing to see somebody who's willing to do something different from the usual pizza "status quo" in their menu--an example being the whipped feta, the pierogi potato toppings, and the marinated tomatoes. Honestly kinda disappointed. My boyfriend and I are always down to try a new brewery and after reading good reviews, thought we'd give this place a shot. Beers were great. A sour for me and a hoppy ipa for my boyfriend. The food left a lot to be desired. We ordered the wings which weren't actually wings, they were chicken legs. Still not bad but they weren't very crispy and had some non-chewable bites. The pizza we got was called the Truss Ricotta pie which looked amazing but ended up being disappointing. The dough was undercooked but the biggest problem was that our pizza came topped with spinach instead of arugula like how it was described. Was not very good. We've only been here twice so far, but both times have been GOOD. This place is take-out only - you order inside and then can either take your stuff home or head behind the building to picnic tables in the parking lot. There are a number of large tables, and they all have umbrellas. There are lights hung up above the tables which makes for a nice atmosphere. This past time we happened to be there on a Friday, and there was live music! So nice. The beers are all good and very "drinkable". I like getting a few different beers in the glass half growler size. Okay now the food. The building itself is pretty unassuming and casual with a wood-fired oven attached to the back. The food is soooo good. The crust on the myo margherita we ordered was absolutely perfect, and there was plenty of basil underneath the cheese. The soft pretzels come with delicious beer cheese, and they really are so soft inside. The wood-fired chicken was full of flavor - I especially loved the herbed rice and the la la sauce. Full disclosure, the owner is a friend, so I'd probably leave a good review regardless...but I'm happy to report I that I don't have to compromise my Yelp integrity. The food is excellent! Excellent and unique (in such a Pittsburgh way). We got the steak sandwich and the haluski. Both were amazing and different from what you would except...the steak was filet chunks and beer cheese, yum! And the haluski had at least 2 different types of bacon (big chunks) in it. While very happy with my selections, I did notice some amazing looking pizzas being brought out...I'll have those next time. Lest we forget the beer...very good as well and some unique varieties. We sampled a sour, a hemp ale and a gluten free seltzer...all were grade A. We went in the afternoon so missed it, but they sometimes have live music Unfortunately I no longer live in Pittsburgh so the music and the pizza will have to wait for my next trip home read more

This is the email I just sent to Mark at Truss. I just wanted to drop you a short note regarding my catering order I picked up yesterday. Everyone at our birthday party absolutely loved everything. The chicken got everyone excited. The rice was loved by all. The rolls turned out to be a great idea. Your salad was an absolute work of art. Our 10 year old grand daughter filled her plate with cucumbers and a wisp of lettuce and ate it all along with two helpings of chicken. The entire day was perfect because we didn't have to cook. Just sit back and enjoy your food. It was the best birthday party ever. You should also be aware how great your staff was to work with. They really care about your place. Decided to try a bunch of food and some beer for the soft opening. My wife and I each ordered two different wood fired pizzas, the Margherita and the MYO Pepperoni. The pizza was very tasty and big enough for two people. I also ordered the spicy full wings and fries. The wings were great, the only gripe I had was that the spicy sauce was on the side in a container. I also picked up a half growler or the I IPA and it hit the spot. Wasn't overly hoppy and had a great taste. Will order again once the full opening happens! It seems Truss has it all figured out from just a soft opening! Wow! I don't even know where to begin - I've been sleeping on this as they just hit their 1 year anniversary and I just made my first visit. I wanted to stock up my fridge with leftovers for the impending ice storm, so I ordered a Lamb Slide pizza (braised lamb, garlic roasted tomatoes, whipped feta and shaved marjoram carrot) I also got the Salame Picante pie (red sauce, pepperoni, castelvetrano olives, banana pepper, and chili crisp) I'm a sucker for anything with the word "steak" or "tips" throw in the word filet and I'm sold. VERY generous portion of perfectly executed filet tips, garlic redskins and thyme mushrooms. I've never been impressed with a potato to be honest. Of all the things I got today, those were the fastest down the gullet. I don't know what magic juju y'all do to those taters, but I'm all in!! The seasonings were spot on and the wood fired taste added an element I can't get anywhere else. I'm sold. I'm singing praise to all that have ears! The pizza has a perfect chew to the thin dough and a good ratio of toppings to not weigh it down, but enough to pack punches of flavor. I love spice and I love salt, so the Salame Picante was up my alley. The olives burst in my mouth and the chili crisp danced on my tongue. As for the Lamb Slide, it was a nice change from the norm. I'm a strict pepperoni/mushroom girl so this was really going out on a limb. The whipped feta was a nice change and the mouth feel of the shaved carrots and tomatoes was complex. The unmistakable flavor of lamb throughout with shredded meat. Don't forget it's a brewery too! Staff is wonderful, interactive and personable owner/chef is there every day. Taste the libations while you wait and take a growler home for later. There's undoubtedly something for everyone in your party.
