This place always has a great vibe especially for after work drinks. I'm a fan of the food and the large selection of beer of which the staff are well informed about. Only downside is that they allow smokers on the tables in the beer garden which detracts from the enjoyment of the non-smoking patrons who want to enjoy the fresh air. The sooner Melbourne and Victoria catch up with the rest of Australia's non-smoking laws the better. They also do breakfast but you have to be quick as they only open until mid-day on the weekends. read more

I live nearby, so Trunk is my living room. In fact I'm shocked I've never reviewed it. The main restaurant is a lovely old building. Originally a Synagogue, then a school for disadvantaged kids. Finally a restaurant. So the blue plaque on the building says anyway. The building is surrounded by outdoor dining, that verges on beer garden, but is a bit more formal. The new-ish addition is the diner, which serves up traditional diner fare - burgers and the like. The food is okay, but I've never had anything particularly notable. Actually I quite like the burgers, which is a credit given all the competition for the Melbourne burger coin at the moment. They are reasonably sized, can be eaten with your hands and come semi-deconstructed on a platter so you can decide exactly how you'd like your burger. Plus they have housemade tomato sauce that is particularly great. That said, I can't say there is anything massively outstanding about Trunk. However, it's certainly versatile. You can go for sit down meal, a burger, a beer session. You could be sitting down or standing in the sun. You'll likely rub shoulders into a local, someone in a suit or a hens party. Trunk is a well run operation. The staff are drilled. Service is quick and efficient. Given they run a big operation 18 hours ever day I guess it needs to be. Another plus for Trunk is they are open long hours every day. So a reliable go-to if you're stuck thinking of somewhere to grab a drink or bite. That said, they occasionally do close for private functions. Particularly Weddings on Sundays. Tip: If you're a local, they do their pizzas take-away - even if the bar staff are a bit confused, they definitely do. The pizza isn't amazing on the whole, but their margarita is worth a crack. read more

I like Trunk, and it has a great location, fit-out, and seating options. Open early to late for food at all the normal times of day and some not so normal. It is tasty and reasonably priced. It i one of the best places to have a drink, or a group session, in the CBD, at any time of year. Highlights of food here include: - home made hash browns that taste like eastern european popatoe pancakes! so good. - Waffles. Enough said. - The burgers looked amazing. - The big breakfast is great value. - Two breakfasts and 4 coffees for $50.00 My issues with Trunk are: -I have eaten here a couple of times and both times found the service a little skittish and aloof; - I am yet to have a coffee (had three in two sittings) that does not taste like off milk; - The bacon was undercooked. - I like more ice cream with waffles. I don't like being served by three or four different staff. I don;t know why, but I dislike it. Maybe I shouldn't eat here? The first coffee I had here was in the evening, and the staff member who took our order said she would need to get someone else to make it, but then after vanishing for a while, returned to extract our shots and steam the milk. The second and third were for breakfast earlier this week, and while I thought the first was perhaps a poor extraction, the second tasted odd as well. My breakfast buddy later said he thought his coffees were sub-par as well. This seems odd for a place with such a lot of coffees flying out the door, so maybe I just hate their beans, I don;t know. I like my bacon to be at least a little singed in some places, and preferably the fat to not be completely floppy. Seemed microwaved, although I doubt it was. Perhaps a piece that was unlucky enough to not spend long enough on the bottom of the frying pan. Seemed a little stingy on the ice cream with the waffles. Trunk a great venue, but perhaps I will avoid if for food and coffee. read more

Found in a business-y district of the city core, Trunk attracts young and older professionals who most likely work in the area. They grab their morning coffee, take clients out for lunch meetings, and post work day brewskis. I know if I had the means, I'd hang around here often. Their flat white rocked my world, especially since it was winter as I wandered Melbourne. I love the little greenhouse-type building that houses the diner/cafe. There is also heated outdoor seating plus spots in the brick structure. The menu items seemed varied and gourmet, I'd definitely chow down on a burger or some of the appetizers. read more

I really love Trunk as it has a decent menu that has something to please everyone. The outside beer garden is good for casual dining whereas inside is a bit more intimate and classy. I recommend this place for groups of friends as not only does it take reservations but also has the outside area meaning you are bound to get a table. Food wise - everything is pretty delicious. I've been here a few times and these are the things I like - the Trunk Diner hamburger, the large outside area, the wagyu ragu with homemade papardelle in the restaurant, the bottles of hot sauce on the tables in the Diner. Could Trunk be classified as an institution? From my memories of my sister having her birthday many years ago in the main dining area, to my first experience in the Diner sipping on a Gaytime milkshake, to my now almost daily coffee haunt, Trunk seems to have been around since forever. Ultimately it presents a bit of everything for everyone. Wagyu burgers and milkshakes served in the diner, a classy sit down dinner in the restaurant, takeaway coffee, amazing donuts (although they seem to keep changing), top notch muffins, and a diner menu that is entirely available for takeaway. I didn't even mention the lamington, gaytime and tim tam milkshakes and the newly renovated beer garden. I do have a few reservations in terms of pricing, the burger is a bit overpriced, as are the milkshakes (but then again...it seems to be becoming a trend), and the smaller muffins and savoury treats are a little bit awkwardly priced. If they were a dollar or even fifty cents cheaper they'd be a bargain, and would probably literally sell out like hot cakes. I think it's best to describe Trunk as the place you go to when you're looking for a safe (but in a good way) option, with lots of consistently good choices; you can't really go wrong. read more

We know what we like, my wife and I. We have our weekend rituals of spots for breakfast, and we love the warm welcome we receive as regulars. However, one of our regular spots is on their annual one-month holiday at the moment, which means we've had to branch out for breakfast .. and today I let an Internet query for "best bacon in Melbourne" lead me towards somewhere new to try. We wound up at Trunk for a few reasons: We live nearby, they have bacon, they served breakfast till 1130 on a Sunday, and I've been meaning to try them for a few years. Now, I hear you asking (well, I don't, I'm not actually in your house listening to you. Or am I?) "why did you look for bacon, Scott?" -- it's quite simple: When we were on holiday the last few weeks, we didn't have ANY bacon. It wasn't that we were in a bacon-free zone or anything, it's just that we were having fresh fruit for breakfast and seafood for dinner, and not a single slice of delicious porcine perfection crossed our lips since the start of December. A travesty, I know. Anywho, we arrived at Trunk and opted to sit inside in the Diner area. As soon as we got our menus my attention was divided -- the huevos rancheros or the Jamaican pancakes. After some in-depth deliberation with the wife, we both decided that pancakes were what was required. She went with the Blueberry, and I with the Jamaican. She got a side of bacon, and I got a side of pork and fennel sausage, and we shared our sides. Result: O to the M to the G. Outstanding. The caramelised bananas with the slightest crunch to them were incredible. The little pots of liquid yum to pour over the pancakes...well, let's just say I wanted to do shots with them, but the wife didn't encourage me. WOW. Her blueberry pancakes were incredible as well - we both chose well. I loved the pork and fennel sausage, and getting a bit of the bacon my wife ordered made the breakfast absolutely complete. I also tried their seven-spice chai latte...wonderful! But don't make the same mistake I did: Keep stirring it, and if you forget, don't chug the last sip at the bottom. It'll be pretty much solid spice. Cough. Still, wonderfully flavoured!! As usual, I'm staring with four stars simply because it's our first visit, and we want to make sure it's consistently good before I give that final star. Can't wait to return! read more

The restaurant area of Trunk has a decent menu, with good options for antipasto, pasta/risotto, mains and pizza. My friends all had the prosciutto pizza, which had a nice crispy base and fresh topping. I had the pumpkin and taleggio tortellini with hazelnut and burnt sage butter, and that was delicious. This is a good place to go with a bunch of friends; most restaurant diners were large-ish groups. It was a cold night so the beer garden area was empty even on a Saturday night, but inside it was nice and toasty. Would go back but might wait until it's a bit warmer, as it is nice to finish dinner and move outside for a few drinks. The outside area closes at 11pm so after that you have to bring drinks inside, but I'd guess that will change when summer kicks in. $50 per head will get you a good-sized pizza, a Bellini and two glasses of wine. read more

Even though Trunk Bar and Trunk Diner both live on the same property, this review focuses only on Trunk Diner, because I think that the two places both deserve independent assessment. Trunk Diner is the laid back and casual sister to Trunk, located next door. It's a very relaxed atmosphere in the Diner, which has an indoor/outdoor setup, with clear marquee walls that look out onto the Trunk garden. This makes it a perfect place to eat when there's nice, warm weather, but it's not particularly pleasant during winter (as it can be a bit cold and gloomy). Trunk Diner makes a good wagyu beef burger that is inexpensive, but quite basic in terms of taste and presentation. If you'd prefer to spend a little more and opt for a more upmarket feel, you can just step into Trunk next door. read more

Like my fellow reviewer Matt, I'm going to only talk about Trunk Diner. This isn't for any personal preference reasons, merely the fact that I have only eaten at the diner and always (until it came time to uploading this review) believed that they were actually separate companies. In hindsight this was pretty dumb - but how cool would it be to enter through a little wooden fence into what appears to be a tiny village of bars and restaurants with distinct menus but equally chilled out dining areas. There was even a sign directing you into the different locations. Now that I know it's one big place, I'm a little less enamoured with it. I think it's because now I see it as a Disney themed hangout rather than a nifty concept. Shame. Onto Diner itself. I expect (and get) an American diner when walking in here. Sure, it's not like Soda Rock with the jukebox and 50s stylings. In fact the only thing that looks like it came from the US is the outside paintjob, but it serves that wholesome American food we all love. You know, the sort that goes through the deep fryer before it comes to you. Think of it as the Melbourne interpretation of a Diner. So, more expensive, beer on tap, and a little bit quirky. read more

Spent a cracking good Sunday afternoon with a large group set-up in the courtyard out the back. Beers were flowing, fun messy American hot dogs and wings being devoured everywhere you looked, sun smiling down - almost a good enough day to let you forget you were back at work the next day. Staff seemed friendly but stuffed up our drinks orders several times. There was only 2 cocktails on offer but they kept bringing the wrong one out - four times in a row. They never did get it right either - we just stopped asking. At least our friends enjoyed the spoils of their stuff-ups. Only other issue is that with the place split between Trunk Restaurant and the Diner and then the inside bar it got confusing as to where you could order what: can't order diner food from the bar, can't order beer from the diner (they eventually opened the taps at the diner later in the day). Could do well with a little more cohesion there. As others have said - the crazy hot chicken wings (so hot they're single serve only) are *seriously* hot. Don't mess around with them if you can't hold your heat. I observed two of our group's chilli lovers nearly get badly beaten. (Still don't believe they were 'ok' the next day...). Super fun as a spectator sport though. It says a lot that even with a dodgy cocktail experience I still rate this so high - have been other times and found it can get too busy outside at peak times and too noisy inside also, but otherwise Trunk remains a great CBD staple. read more

Trunk had me sold before I even went inside. A beautiful old brick building framed by rows of fairy lights, you'll rarely find a restaurant that looks this inviting. Even more so considering it's framed by some pretty uninspiring city blocks. Inside is equally pleasing, a cavernous space and an impressive bar. While it's usually pretty busy the staff are always friendly and accommodating and happy to make space for you. The best value meals in the restaurant are definitely the pizzas. Grab a few to share. The Melburnian (tomato, mozzarella, ham, mushrooms, artichokes & egg) and the Montanaro (gorgonzola, mascarpone, walnuts, sautéed asparagus, flat pancetta & radicchi) are particualar favourites. read more

came here with a friend for a quick coffee. these guys know how to make quality coffee. I thoroughly enjoyed my mocca and my friend ordered latte that he also loved. but the best is desserts!=) the carrot cake piece we shared was just out of this world. moist and flavourful with a delicious creamy topping. it's worth coming here just to try all the desserts they have on offer. I also really liked their patio that has few nooks and corners where you can hide with a friend for a quiet conversation or just sit there sipping coffee with a book. read more

We arrived at Trunk on a cold, wet morning and sat outside with our faithful hound. Brrr. But thankfully they have outdoor heaters which helped. This cafe has terrific ambiance in the outdoor area. The flat white was weak, much too frothy, and worst of all, it was lukewarm. My partner's Earl Grey was a good quality one though. My last night in melbourne i saved the right restaurant for last. Wandered in for an early (1745) saturday night dinner. Started with a nice vesper martini (had to inform the bartender about the gin and vodka i wanted,and he put olives instead of a lemon peel). started with the heirloom tomato, feta and cuke salad with warm bread and olive oil that sticks to back of your thought good! main course had the linguine with the scallops, prawn, squid cooked in parchment paper...could have used an entire loaf of bread on the sauce! so many more menu items to try...can't wait to get back. read more

Had lunch today in the dinner with a group of 4 that contained both high & low maintenance eaters. We all went the burger & fries, and we were all very satisfied. Al the ingredients are top quality & cooked to perfection (if you like your burger a little pink inside). Don't be fooled by anyone who says the burgers are too small, you are a pig if you expect more. The price is very reasonable too. read more
