Dining in the low-lit, intimate space with its focus on delicious meats and refined sides and apps was a perfect evening. Yes, depending on where you sit it can feel a little cramped, but that doesn't detract from the goods brought to the table during your meal. The waiter was attentive to our needs and made us aware of the wait time for the steaks (accurately 25 minutes) and the meats were cooked exquisitely. They recommended medium (we usually like medium rare, being from Texas) but advised us it would still be close to that and warm pink in the center, which it was. Glad we took their advice! The Mac and cheese was a bit on the sweet side with the shredded cheese that came with it, but that's just our taste preference showing. The chips were impeccable. Thick, crispy on the outside, and with an incredibly uniquely textured salt to go with them.

Maid mood

Good lord. This place. I'm not sure how I discovered this restaurant, but we were looking for somewhere to eat for dinner near our hotel and this popped up and the reviews spoke for itself. I was able to make a late evening reservation. We arrived on time and we were promptly seated. we opted to try the maiden mood I think that's what you call it. It's basically a combination of starters, mains and side dishes. Ours came with the grilled bread which was outstanding. We also had the charred octopus for the main courses we had the ribeye and some smoked brisket and another meat. And our side dishes were charred greens and chips. The food was outstanding. Honestly, the star of the show has to be the octopus. I know it's a meat place, but the octopus was impeccably cooked. Service was also spot on and attentive. It's a very dimly lit location with good vibes. We did not stay for dessert because we were absolutely stuffedagain, and we had a great time. It was a lot of food.

I had a $60 awful steak here. We paid $250 for 2 people and I didn't finish my meal. This is the first time in several years that I left a negative review let alone 1 star review so it must really be atrocious. I ordered a medium steak and I got something overly well done...there was not the slightest hint of pink here, check the photo. Instead of sending it back and replacing it, I got a patronising response that steaks continue to cook after they are taken off the grill. Clearly they don't care and never even told the kitchen. I didn't finish the steak it was so bad. Don't talk down to your customers., If you want a proper steak go to the Railway Club Hotel, Bistro Gitane or even the Meat and Wine Co. Again it pains me to write a negative review, but sometimes you have to. It's a shame as it's a cool very Melbourne venue.

Texan Approved! Growing up in the barbecue Mecca of the world, also known as Austin, Texas, I can say that this place is awesome and can run with the best of them! We tried the burnt ends, brisket, and short ribs for the meats. The sides we had potatoes, and Cos lettuce. I thought that was a lot of food for two people, if we come again we will either only eat meat or get one meat and two sides. You can tell that a lot of love was put in to these dishes, especially the meats! The brisket was very tender and had a wonderful Smokey flavor, as was the short rib. Skip the Cos lettuce, but the potatoes were wonderfully made accompanied with a bacon aioli. The bread pudding was a miss for us. The vibe of the place is pretty laid back. It's in the basement of the building is dimly lit with light music playing in the background. The staff was super friendly and helpful, our server even gave us a list of cool bars to go to while we are on holiday. I would definitely return several times if I lived here.

The brisket is the bomb. When I first saw them going out the cut was so big I was mad I missed prime rib on the menu.

Wow. Deifinitely a cool hipster vibe. The staff was super friendly. They are all detailed oriented and care about what they're doing rather it was the chef preparing cold items or the the sous chef doing fine knife work. Let's talk about what really matters though. The food. The brisket I had was as good or better than anything I've had at the most famous shops in Texas Hill Country, and I've been to Blacks, Franklin, and Salt Lick. The MAC and Cheese was really well done. Not gooey not runny. Creamy and cheeses. The Vanilla parfait with salted caramel and honeycomb was delicious without being overpowering. One minor remark would be the parfait was a little too cold for my liking. This place is definitely great. Don't hesitate. As an American it seemed spendy to me but so does everything in Australia.

Very hip place to eat, and maybe not for the vegetarians... I had heard so many good things about this place but did not love the wagyu rump. Was rather rare for my liking. I'm saying that, everyone else's was amazing and the burnt carrots are to die for. Service was really good. I camped there all night, starting with drinks and then a long dinner. If I could only fit I the dessert... but alas was just to full.

If their brisket was a religion, I'd convert. This was another place I'd heard about through the grapevine, and wanted to check out. As other reviewers had suggested, the prices are quite high. I was dining on my own, and a $61 bill for two courses and two non-alcoholic drinks was on par with Perth-level prices for dining out. Sadly, the sides ordered with the main just didn't stack up. I'd heard a lot of people rave about their Mac and Cheese, but it didn't hit the mark for me. It was more mac than cheese, and the cheese they were using just didn't shine through in the dish. Their chips also left a little bit to be desired, not being consistently crisp. Also, I just don't understand serving drinks in Mason Jars. I'm sorry, this is just silly, and it was made worse by having a metal rim on top of their jars which could run the risk of cutting someone's mouth. Just serve me a drink that was in a bottle, in its bottle. And service staff were over-attentive. You don't need three staff all asking you how the meal is going all within 5min of each other - this was just excessive and interrupted the dining experience. But back to some positives please, and the brisket - this was impressive. It was a 20-hour Rangers Valley Wagyu brisket, with Tasmanian pepper berry rub. It was melt in your mouth fantastic. Another positive of this place is the decor. It has an industrial feel to it, which may be off-putting to some, but for this venue and location it works well. So, there's some good points, and some not so good points. I'd be happy to return, but there'd need to be an improvement in the sides they offered to make it worthwhile.

Enter through the dark and nondescript door and wind your way down in to the stairwell to enter a den of all things meaty. If you're a carnivore then Meatmaiden will delight you with it's selection of slow cooked and smoked cuts of meats. From quail and prawn to brisket, there's a protein to suit everyone. Well, except the vegetarians of course. There's vegetable dishes don't get me wrong, but they're hardly going to suffice as a main for someone who shuns eating animals. The wine and beer list is snappy and the cocktail menu leans towards the boozy to help cut through the meat. It's all rather relaxed, great for groups of friends wanting to fuel up but less appropriate for romantic dates when sucking on bones is probably not the seductive look you're after.

Took me awhile to finally visit. But I finally made it here and boy am I glad I made the effort. Before gettin here just looking at the menu got me excited. So walking in I was ready to go. The lovely waitress's took care of us and found a nice booth to sit in and explained the layout of the restaurant and how it works. We ordered the $10 mystery cocktail, and it was very nice. Then onto the food, we ordered a fair bit. Got some oysters (which were delicious and blew my tastebuds out of the water), mash and gravy (nothing special it's just mash and gravy, get the chips instead of this), Cajun tuna (delicious and so fresh), iron steak from the grill (deliciously cooked and so tasty), beef brisket (tender and so smokey was just outstanding) and finally the lobster mac and cheese (could of done with a few more lobsters, however the Mac and cheese was really tasty) At first we thought portion size was small, but once we started getting through our mountain of food we then realised that portions was fine. Well done guys way to go, worth the check out :)

Great experience here. My friends and I had a buck's party in Melbourne over the weekend and made this one of our stops. We're all American except for one Irishman and the buck lived in Austin, Texas for a while and we all came away impressed. The venue is setup like a small bar but super sleek with meat on display. We made a booking the day before and got a late table but it was no big deal, as you could have the table as long as you wanted. We ordered smokey old fashioned's all around, and the Maiden's mood. Pickled heirloom veg, chilli & goat curd: 4/5 Southern fried chicken ribs, tequila mayo: 4/5 Devilled Eggs: 5/5 Brisket: 5/5 Lamb ribs: 3/5 Pulled Pork: 5/5 Lobster Mac and Cheese: 5/5 Service was great and attentive, so if that's not your style you may not enjoy it. Dat Mac and Cheese though... Price is definitely on the expensive side, especially cocktails, but it's a great experience. Overall 4.5/5

No one informed us about any policy. We paid for the bottle with 5% service charge which I do not think they deserved. We had a sudden work call at 11.30pm and grabbed the bottle to go, only for the staff to chase us to the front of the bar to inform us that they do not have a takeaway license. For christ sake, we already had bought the bottle!! Though it's alright, we respect policy. They highlighted that they needed to keep the bottle in the establishment. We asked if we could come back and finish it. They said they would keep our bottle. We rushed back to our hotel (Marriott- 200m away for the call). When we returned at 11.58pm, they had already thrown our bottle away. Unbelievable! They were quick to receive our money but equally quick to throw our experience out the window. No doubt, we returned almost at closing times but throwing our wine before closing time - if you wanna go by the book, that is still not your closing time. When we raised our grievances to the staff, she said she told us about closing time at 12 midnight. However, we emphasised that she should have let us know about the takeaway policy and license. Had we known, we would not have ordered a bottle. She looked at us blankly and simply replied "feedback received, but we do not allow anyone in after 12, so you have to leave". Quite honestly, ChatGPT / Claude / Grok could have conveyed more empathy. I am not a VIP customer nor am I a high spender. That being said, I value places with a human connection and empathy, and would regularly visit such places with joy and happiness multiple times. This place is not one of them. For this reason, I will never visit again. If you think likewise, and value authenticity and a true Aussie welcome, you would not visit this place. I hate to give negative reviews but please spend your money elsewhere.

The staff were knowledgeable about the menu, checked in on us at the right moments, and made the whole experience feel effortless and welcoming. Every dish we ordered was excellent -- not a single miss. We started with the Cauliflower & Mozzarella Croquettes, which were crispy on the outside and perfectly creamy inside. The Grilled King Prawns were flavorful and cooked just right, while the Kingfish Ceviche was fresh, bright, and beautifully balanced. The Stracciatella & Heirloom Tomatoes was simple yet outstanding, letting the quality of the ingredients shine. For mains, the Duck Breast was cooked perfectly and full of rich flavor, and the Lamb Backstrap was tender and well-seasoned. The Pecorino & Ricotta Ravioli was comforting and delicate, while the Seafood Linguine stood out with generous portions of seafood and a beautifully balanced sauce. The Honey Glaze Carrots were the perfect side -- sweet, savory, and executed flawlessly. Overall, State of Grace delivers on every level -- ambience, service, and food.
