I picked up chicken halves for supper, tough chicken and pretty dry. Ordered brisket beans, I got onion beans--no brisket, just cooked onions and bean juice and a few beans. The sides I've had are also all very good: Brisket beans, coleslaw, macaroni. I happen to know firsthand that they have very high standards with their food quality, throwing out a lot of food each day to ensure that they only serve the fresh stuff (good news for bums who eat at the dumpster buffet). The three sauce options are also pleasant, although the spicy one is the only good one as far as I'm concerned. They offer some decent beers on tap! Plus, it's kind of nice to shop in HEB, put in your BBQ order, go pay for your groceries, and have your food waiting for you. The bad: Cuban sandwich (everything is wrong on it, from the bread to the thickness of the meat to the meat itself to the way the mustard is spread to the cheese) and the frito bowl (Not enough scallions, nothing to really make it more unique than meat with some fritos piled on top). It's hit or miss with the customer service, they really need to get more consistent with that, it's very shameful on their management. This is the restaurant now inside of HEB. I ducked into the store for and groceries and find this awesome joint at the same time. I ordered a loaded baked potato with the sauced chopped brisket. It was delicious, good price and pretty sizable. The brisket was terrific, loaded with flavor and tender. I can only imagine the other meal are just as good. Super disappointed with True Texas BBQ. First off, let me start by saying they have delicious bbq. Their portion sizes aren't that great compared to the money you spend, but I love their sliced brisket, macaroni and cheese, and their cream corn, so we keep coming back. With that being said, I honestly don't want to come back anymore. I get frequent cravings for bbq. Lately, every single time I come, they have a white board with a long list of things they are out of... potatoes are usually among those items. We love bbq potatoes, so that's a BIG disappointment. Monday we had to grab a few items at Heb, and I noticed they only had like 3 items they were out of, so we decided to stay and eat. I have a family of 5 and we spent over $50. We ordered a meat plate, 2 potatoes, and 2 kids meals. About 10 minutes after ordering I was called up to the pick up area to be told they were out of potatoes and couldn't fulfill that part of my order. Instead of just swapping it out for something else and making it right, they made me go up front to refund the potatoes and reorder. I had to stand in a long line and wait for my turn to order (yet again). I ended up getting two large sandwiches and one side. It was more than the potatoes themselves, so i had to spend more money. I just felt like it was extremely poor customer service. Not only can you not keep up with demand, but you're also going to charge a customer more when you can't give them what they ordered. I was extremely aggravated. The cashier told me that the higher ups give them a certain amount of food to cook and once they run out then that's it. She suggested I come before 5, because after 5 they start running out. I'm sorry, but that's absurd. If you can't keep up with supply and demand, and you can't hardly operate during dinner hours, then you shouldn't even be open in the first place. Shame on the higher ups for running a business this way. Customer service is seriously lacking, and I'm super aggravated that I had to pay the difference when they couldn't give me what I ordered. On top of all that, I had to wait additional time for them to make my second order. When they called me up i had to explain that I never received the first part of my order. She then points to my order sitting over in the corner. It had been there the entire time getting cold. Seriously??? I plan to find another bbq place next time I get a craving. read more

Wow - I was not expecting a BBQ inside a grocery store to be this good! Employees were friendly and helpful and we were greeted and served very quickly. I had the chopped brisket sandwich and potato salad. The brisket was spicy and not fatty at all (usually my pet peeve) and the potato salad was mild with crunchy celery pieces. Would eat here twice a week and the food was excellent but something has recently happened to this location. I called to place an order and was hung up on twice . I then tried again 15 minutes later and had the rudest person answer the phone who acted annoyed since I was wanting to get a couple of the beef ribs. When I saw there was a barbecue place near my hotel and rated fairly high, I thought I'd check it out.. Then I saw it was inside HEB, a grocery store! Could it really be all that great? After walking in HEB I stood in line for about 10 minutes. That was encouraging, maybe the high rating was true! Well.. I've had a lot of barbecue in my life from Texas to Kansas and everywhere in between -- and this tops it all! My god!!! For a restaurant in a grocery store this impress and lived up to their reputation. Nice area to sit - clean. Always seems to have a line when I'm at the store but it does go move fast. Seems like most of the business is for take out. Ordered the two meat plate . Green beans was good but the beans and brisket was so good I inhaled it. I ate the beans so quickly it filled me up with the turkey. I took a bite of the brisket which was juicy but took the other part home and ate it later. Disappointed. Line was a little long inside the store. We walked from hotel so we were pretty much stuck. Brisket was really good and would recommend, however, you only get 2 pieces with a 2 meat order for 9.95. Sides were not good. Mac and cheese was bland. Green beans lacked salt and flavor. Had a piece of small piece of bone in mine after 1st bite, so did not finish. My coworker also tried the green beans lacked flavor and were not good. Both were off temperature. Cornbread was heavy, flavorless, and kind of dark. May have been overcooked. Out of sausage so couldn't review. Tea was excellent and recommend. Service was not very friendly. The employees seem to lack pride and dedication in what they are serving as you would find at a locally owned barbecue venture. Some employees appear to need food service retraining on food handling such as food temperature, changing gloves and overall presentation skills. Good brisket and barbecue in an H.E.B shopping store is an irony in itself. And yet they pull it off. As noted by other Yelpers, the fatty brisket is to die for. If you haven't tried it, you must. It's akin to the type you get a finer standalone smokehouses and BBQ joints around Texas. I've been to a few too. I think their Mac n Cheese can use some flavor. Tastes commercial to me. The sauces are excellent and you can take yourself several cups for your enjoyment. I eat this BBQ infrequently, not out of bad taste but watching those calories and cholesterol. But when I do, I go to town on the menu take it to the house. You would too if you tried it. This restaurant is in the new HEB grocery store at the intersection of Loop 250/191. We first tried the HEB BBQ at the West Odessa location and the new Midland location has an even bigger restaurant. BBQ has great flavor...some things can have a very smoky flavor but that is not bad at all. You can really tell it was cooked over a genuine wood fire. Side dishes are good. They also have some non-barbecue sandwiches such as a sliced turkey which had especially fresh ingredients. You can buy other things such as sushi etc. from the grocery department and eat them there as well. As it is a grocery store, it has very reasonable prices. read more

Lets start with the good. The barbeque here is very good, I've never been disappointed with flavor or consistency. The real reason for this review is the bad things about this place. The last three times I've been there they mess up my order, which they fixed so I'll give them that. The last thing which really grinds my gears is how do you run out of ribs and potatoes all the time? I've yet to even be able to order a brisket potato. How in the hell do you run out of potatoes?
